Plenty of travellers staying on the Canadian side fly home from Buffalo. The fares and schedules to US cities often suit them better than Toronto, and the airport is far closer: about 42 km (26 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, roughly 45 minutes of driving. What makes the trip different from any other airport run is the bridge. You are leaving Canada and entering the United States on the way to your gate.
NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives the Niagara Falls to Buffalo airport run across all three public bridges, and the planning rule we give every passenger is the same: decide your leaving time by the border, not by the map.
How long does it take to get from Niagara Falls to Buffalo airport?
About 42 km (26 mi) and roughly 45 minutes of driving from the Fallsview hotels, plus the US border inspection, which nobody can predict. NiagaraFallsLimo.net recommends leaving 3 h 30 to 4 h before a domestic US flight. Book the cross-border transfer online and your chauffeur crosses the bridge with you.
The three bridges and which one we use
Three crossings connect the Niagara Falls area to Buffalo for ordinary passenger vehicles, all open 24 hours according to US Customs and Border Protection's wait-time data. A fourth is reserved for trusted travellers.
- Rainbow Bridge. Right at the Falls, between Clifton Hill and downtown Niagara Falls, New York. From most Niagara Falls hotels it is the shortest route to the I-190 and the airport. Cars, buses and limousines use it; trucks do not. Our Rainbow Bridge page has the detail.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. North of the city, reached by Highway 405. It carries commercial trucks as well as cars, and has six car lanes into the United States. It is a little further from the Fallsview hotels but sometimes moves faster.
- Peace Bridge. Between Fort Erie and Buffalo, upriver. From the Falls the route is longer, about 52 km to the airport, but it can be the better choice when the Rainbow queue is long or when you are staying in Fort Erie.
- Whirlpool Rapids Bridge. NEXUS members only, open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Everyone in the vehicle, driver included, must be a NEXUS member carrying their card, so it is rarely usable in a hired car.
The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission's which bridge page sets out lanes and vehicle rules for its three bridges. Your chauffeur checks live waits before leaving the hotel and chooses the crossing then.
Why nobody can promise the crossing time
US-bound wait times are published by CBP at bwt.cbp.gov and in its app, by bridge and by lane type. They are useful, with two caveats CBP itself points out: the figure measures from joining the queue to reaching the inspection booth, and it may be up to an hour old. Once you are at the booth, inspection time depends on the officer, your documents and the questions asked.
So we treat border time as unknown and plan a buffer instead. Holiday long weekends, US holidays such as Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July, and big events in Buffalo all lengthen queues. Early mornings are generally quieter. Our border wait times page and the post on southbound waits when heading home explain how to read the numbers.
What time to leave for your flight
These are the planning allowances we recommend from a Fallsview or Clifton Hill hotel. They include the drive, a border buffer and the time your airline expects you at the terminal.
| Situation | Leave the hotel about | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Domestic US flight, ordinary weekday | 3 h 30 before departure | the default |
| Domestic US flight, Friday, Sunday or holiday weekend | 4 h – 4 h 30 before | border queues lengthen |
| International flight from BUF | 4 h 30 before | longer airline deadlines |
| Visitors who need an I-94 at the land border | add 30 – 60 minutes | processed at the port of entry |
| Very early flight, before 7 a.m. | 3 h before | overnight queues are usually short, but not always |
If those times feel long, remember what the buffer protects: a missed flight from Buffalo is usually a much bigger problem than an hour in the departure lounge. The Buffalo airport transfer page covers arrivals in the other direction.

Documents for entering the US by car
The chauffeur crosses the bridge with you, but every passenger must carry their own valid documents. US Customs and Border Protection lists what it accepts at land crossings on its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page:
- US citizens: a US passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST).
- Canadian citizens: a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence, or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card.
- Children: US and Canadian citizens under 16 need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship.
- Other nationalities: a passport and the right authorization. CBP's I-94 page says Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA before arriving at a land border, and encourages applying for the I-94 in advance through the CBP Link app or the I-94 website. The land-border I-94 fee is 30 US dollars as of 2026.
Two further points for visitors. Since late 2025, non-citizens, including Canadians, may be photographed on entry at US land ports. And cannabis remains illegal to carry across the border in either direction, whatever its legal status in Ontario. Our documents for entering the USA page covers the details, including dual citizens, who must enter the US on their US passport.
On the US side: the drive to the terminal
Once through inspection, the route is short and straightforward. From the Rainbow Bridge the car joins the Niagara Scenic Parkway and I-190 south, then the I-290 east toward the airport in Cheektowaga. There is no toll to enter the United States at any of the Niagara bridges; tolls are collected only on the way into Canada. Your chauffeur drops you at departures and unloads the bags.
Shopping, declarations and what goes in the trunk
US officers ask what you are bringing into the country, and the answer should be quick and accurate. CBP gives returning US residents an 800 US dollar duty-free exemption once every 31 days if they have been outside the country for at least 48 hours, and a smaller 200 dollar exemption after shorter trips, as of 2026. Visitors have their own allowances. Keep receipts for wine, icewine and other purchases together and easy to reach, and pack bottles sealed in your luggage rather than loose in the cabin. There is no drinking in our vehicles, on either side of the river. If you are carrying Niagara wine home, our post on bringing wine back to the US from Niagara-on-the-Lake has the details.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Border | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | about 45 minutes driving plus border | fixed fare via booker | crosses with you; normal service | families, groups, heavy bags, anyone on a fixed flight time |
| Shared airport shuttle | longer, with other stops | per-seat fare | crosses, on its own schedule | solo travellers flexible about timing |
| Rideshare | similar drive if available | app price, surge pricing | many drivers will not cross the border | short trips on one side only |
| Taxi | similar drive if the cab will cross | metered | ask before you get in | travellers who confirm cross-border service in advance |
| Drive yourself | similar drive plus parking at BUF | fuel, tolls into Canada later, parking | you handle the inspection | travellers with their own car and a return plan |
The honest verdict. If you are a single traveller with a flexible schedule, a shared shuttle to Buffalo airport is a perfectly reasonable choice; the airport publishes a list of operators carrying passengers to Canada. Rideshare is the risky option: Niagara Falls International Airport warns travellers that rideshare services may not cross the border, and the same caution applies here. A pre-booked chauffeur makes sense when the flight time is fixed, when you have children, luggage or a group, or when you would simply like one person managing the bridge for you. For a broader comparison see our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide and the cross-border car service page.
Who it suits
Individuals flying home to a US city after a conference in Niagara like the certainty of a fixed pickup and a driver who knows the bridges. Couples ending a weekend on the Canadian side avoid a shuttle's extra stops. Families benefit because everyone's documents are checked together in one vehicle, with child seats already in place. Groups travel in one SUV or Sprinter, which keeps the party together through inspection and onto the same flight.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Buffalo airport from Niagara Falls, Canada?
About 42 km (26 mi) from the Fallsview hotels by the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 45 minutes of driving. The border inspection is extra and varies. Going by the Peace Bridge is longer, about 52 km, but is sometimes faster when the Rainbow Bridge queue is heavy.
Which bridge is fastest to Buffalo airport?
It changes by the hour. The Rainbow Bridge is the shortest route from most Niagara Falls hotels; the Lewiston-Queenston and Peace bridges are alternatives when it is busy. Your chauffeur checks the live US-bound waits on CBP's site before leaving and picks the crossing then.
Do I need a passport to go from Niagara Falls to Buffalo airport?
Canadian and US citizens can use a passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a trusted traveller card at a land crossing; US citizens can also use a passport card. You will need a passport to fly from Buffalo to anywhere outside the United States, so carry it anyway.
Can I take an Uber from Niagara Falls, Canada to Buffalo airport?
It is unreliable. Many rideshare drivers will not cross the border, and Niagara Falls International Airport warns travellers about this. A pre-booked cross-border chauffeur or an airport shuttle that lists Canadian service is the dependable option.
Is there a toll on the bridge going to the US?
No. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission and the Peace Bridge collect tolls only on traffic entering Canada. Your fare in the booker is all-in, so there is nothing to pay at the bridge either way.
How early should I leave for a 10 a.m. flight from Buffalo?
For a domestic US flight, about 6:30 a.m. from a Fallsview hotel on an ordinary weekday, or around 5:30 to 6 a.m. on a holiday weekend. Visitors who need an I-94 at the border should add a further 30 to 60 minutes.
Do non-Americans need anything extra at the land border?
Yes. Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA, and visitors may need an I-94, which CBP encourages you to apply for in advance through the CBP Link app or website. A provisional I-94 must be completed in person at the port of entry within seven days.
