Choosing an aircraft for a private jet charter is mostly arithmetic: how many people, how much luggage, how far, and how short the runway is at each end. The class names used across the industry (very light, light, midsize, super-midsize, large, ultra-long-range) are a shorthand for those answers. When NiagaraFallsLimo.net asks licensed operators to quote your trip, we start from the class that fits the mission and let operators propose the specific aircraft they have available. This page explains each class with real models and the figures their manufacturers publish.
One caution: a manufacturer's maximum range assumes ideal conditions. Real flights face headwinds, winter weather, full cabins and reserve fuel, so operators plan with a margin. Use the ranges below to compare aircraft, not as a promise that a trip can be flown nonstop.
What size of private jet do I need for my trip?
For two to six people flying up to about 1,000 nautical miles, such as Toronto to New York or Florida, a light jet or turboprop usually fits. Groups of eight to twelve, or transcontinental trips, point to super-midsize or large jets. NiagaraFallsLimo.net matches the class to your passengers, bags and route, then asks licensed operators to quote.
Three questions settle most decisions:
- How many seats? Count everyone, including an assistant or security staff. A cabin that seats nine on paper may be comfortable for six.
- What luggage? Golf bags and skis fill a light jet's hold quickly; we check the operator's hold figures.
- How far, and where? Runways matter too: Niagara District's main runway is 5,000 ft, while Toronto Pearson takes any business jet.

Turboprops: short runways and short hops
Turboprops drive propellers with turbine engines. They cruise slower than jets but use shorter runways, and some are certified for gravel or grass strips, which makes them a natural fit for cottage country, island airports and regional fields such as Niagara District or Billy Bishop.
- Pilatus PC-12. Pilatus says the PC-12 seats up to nine passengers, cruises at up to 290 KTAS, has a maximum range of 1,765 nm and can operate from short runways and unmade grass, gravel or snow strips.
- Beechcraft King Air 360. Textron lists the King Air 360 at 11 maximum occupants, 1,806 nm (3,345 km) range, 312 ktas maximum cruise, a 57-inch cabin height, a 19 ft 6 in cabin and 71.3 cu ft of baggage space.
A turboprop is the honest choice for a Niagara-to-Ottawa hop, where a jet saves only minutes. For Billy Bishop in downtown Toronto, a turboprop is the plan: the 2026 proposal to open the airport to jets was rejected by the federal government.
Very light jets: two to five people, short trips
Very light jets are the smallest jets in charter fleets. They suit a couple, a small family or two executives with carry-on bags on trips of an hour or two.
- Cessna Citation M2 Gen3. Textron gives the M2 Gen3 seven maximum occupants, 1,550 nm (2,871 km) range, 404 ktas maximum cruise, a 57-inch cabin height, an 11 ft cabin and 45.6 cu ft of baggage.
- The HondaJet and Embraer Phenom 100EX also fly in this class. We could not read current figures on their manufacturers' sites when this page was written, so we leave their numbers out.
The cabin is not stand-up, and the lavatory depends on the layout. For Toronto to New York (about 300 nm) a very light jet is quick and efficient.
Light jets: the workhorse for Florida and the Northeast
Light jets add seats, range and baggage, and many have an enclosed lavatory. They are the most common answer for families flying Toronto to Florida.
- Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3. Nine maximum occupants, 2,040 nm (3,778 km) range, 416 ktas, 57-inch cabin height, 15 ft 8 in cabin and 65 cu ft of baggage, per Textron.
- Cessna Citation CJ4 Gen3. Textron lists the CJ4 at ten maximum occupants, 2,165 nm (4,010 km), 451 ktas, a 57-inch cabin height, a 17 ft 4 in cabin and 77.1 cu ft of baggage.
- Pilatus PC-24. Pilatus gives 2,000 nm maximum range and 440 KTAS maximum cruise, and says the jet can use short and unmade runways, including grass, gravel and snow. Its published layouts run from six-seat executive to a ten-seat commuter cabin.
- The Embraer Phenom 300E is also widely used for charter; its figures were not readable on Embraer's site when we checked.
Toronto to Miami is about 1,074 nm in a straight line, comfortably inside this class on a normal day. Toronto to Las Vegas, at about 1,685 nm, is close enough to the limits that winds and a full cabin may call for a fuel stop or a bigger aircraft.
Midsize jets: stand up and stretch out
Midsize jets are where most passengers can stand upright and walk to the lavatory without stooping.
- Cessna Citation Latitude. Textron describes the Latitude as a wide, flat-floor, six-foot stand-up cabin: nine maximum occupants, 2,700 nm (5,000 km) range, 446 ktas, a 72-inch cabin height, a 21 ft 9 in cabin and 127 cu ft of baggage.
- The Embraer Praetor 500 competes here; its current figures could not be read on Embraer's site.
A midsize jet is a good fit for Toronto to the West Coast nonstop, and for groups of six who want a proper cabin for three or four hours.
Super-midsize jets: coast to coast
Super-midsize jets combine a wide, stand-up cabin with transcontinental range.
- Cessna Citation Longitude. Twelve maximum occupants, 3,500 nm (6,482 km) range, 483 ktas, a 72-inch cabin height, a 25 ft 2 in cabin and 112 cu ft of baggage, per Textron's Longitude page.
- Bombardier Challenger 3500. Bombardier lists the Challenger 3500 for up to ten passengers, 3,400 nm (6,297 km) maximum range, a 6 ft 0 in cabin height, a 25 ft 2 in cabin, a 106 cu ft baggage compartment and a top speed of Mach 0.83.
- The Embraer Praetor 600 also sits in this class.
Toronto to Farnborough is about 3,076 nm, right at the edge of these aircraft on paper. For transatlantic trips we normally ask for large-cabin options as well.
Large jets: transatlantic with room to work
Large-cabin jets add length, more seating zones and, in some, a separate rear stateroom.
- Bombardier Challenger 650. Up to 12 passengers, 4,000 nm (7,408 km) maximum range, 6 ft 0 in cabin height, 25 ft 7 in cabin, 115 cu ft of baggage, top speed Mach 0.85.
- Dassault Falcon 2000LXS. Dassault lists 8–10 passengers, 4,000 nm (7,408 km) with eight passengers, a 74-inch cabin height, a 7.98 m (26.18 ft) cabin and 130.6 cu ft of baggage. Dassault highlights its ability at steep-approach airports such as London City and Lugano.
- Gulfstream G500. Up to 19 seats, sleeping up to 8, 5,300 nm (9,816 km) maximum range, a 6 ft 2 in cabin height, a 41 ft 6 in cabin, up to three living areas and 175 cu ft of baggage.
- Dassault Falcon 6X. 12–16 passengers, 5,500 nm (10,186 km), a 78-inch cabin height, a 102-inch cabin width, a 40.3 ft cabin and 155 cu ft of baggage.
Ultra-long-range jets: Toronto to Asia or the Gulf
Ultra-long-range jets carry enough fuel to link North America with Asia, the Middle East or southern Europe nonstop, and their cabins are divided into several living spaces.
- Dassault Falcon 8X. Dassault's Falcon 8X page lists 12–16 passengers, 6,450 nm (11,945 km) with eight passengers, a 74-inch cabin height, a 42.7 ft cabin and 140 cu ft of baggage.
- Gulfstream G700. Gulfstream lists the G700 with up to 19 seats, a 7,750 nm maximum range at Mach 0.85, a 6 ft 3 in cabin height, a 56 ft 11 in cabin, up to five living areas and 195 cu ft of baggage.
- Bombardier Global 8000. Bombardier's Global 8000 seats up to 19, with an 8,000 nm (14,816 km) maximum range, a 6 ft 2 in cabin height, a 54 ft 5 in cabin and four living spaces, which Bombardier calls the only business jet with four true living spaces.
Beyond business jets: airliners and helicopters
VIP airliners
For very large groups, Boeing Business Jets lists the BBJ737 MAX, BBJ787 and BBJ777X among its models. Cabins are custom-fitted, so seats and range depend on each aircraft. For sports teams and tour groups, an airliner chartered from an airline is usually the practical route, with coaches arranged through our group transportation service.
Helicopters for short hops
Helicopters move people across short distances where no runway exists, such as a rooftop or a private estate, subject to the landing site's approvals. In Niagara, the name most visitors know is Niagara Helicopters, which runs sightseeing flights over the Falls from about 9 a.m. until sunset, weather permitting. That is a scenic tour, not a transfer service; our Niagara Helicopters page covers the drive there. For point-to-point helicopter charter elsewhere, ask us and we will check with licensed operators.
Choosing between classes: car, turboprop or jet
| Option | Best range of trip | Strength | Weak point | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chauffeured car | under about 400 km | door to door, no airfield transfer, fixed fare via the booker | slow on long trips | Toronto, Buffalo, Hamilton, Rochester |
| Turboprop | up to about 1,800 nm on paper | short and unpaved runways, big doors | slower cruise | regional hops, cottage country |
| Light or very light jet | 300–1,500 nm | speed, efficiency | no stand-up cabin | couples, small families, day trips |
| Midsize and super-midsize | 1,500–3,000 nm | stand-up cabin, range | larger airport fees | groups of six to ten, coast to coast |
| Large and ultra-long-range | transatlantic and longer | living spaces, sleeping, range | highest operating cost | long-haul and family travel |
Do not charter to save time on a trip a car does well. Pearson to the Fallsview hotels is about 122 km, and our Toronto Pearson transfer will usually be quicker than flying into Niagara District once you add the private terminal at each end. Our guide to booking a limo explains the ground options.
How to book the right aircraft in 3 steps
- Tell us the mission. Use the request form on the charter page: passengers, bags, dates, airports and if you need a stand-up cabin or a lavatory.
- Compare the options. We return quotes from licensed operators, each naming the aircraft type. We explain the trade-offs, such as a light jet with a fuel stop against a midsize nonstop.
- Confirm and plan the ground. Approve the operator's quote and agreement, send passport details, and choose the vehicles. The fleet page shows which car or Sprinter fits your bags, and our FBO directory lists where we meet aircraft.
Who each class suits
- Individuals and couples are usually best served by a very light jet or turboprop for regional trips and a light jet for Florida. See our pages for individual travellers and couples.
- Families often want a light or midsize jet for the baggage space and a lavatory; car seats travel with you and we fit matching seats in the car. See families.
- Groups of eight or more look at super-midsize and large jets, or two smaller aircraft. Corporate travellers can book through corporate accounts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest private aircraft I can charter from Niagara?
Turboprops such as the Pilatus PC-12 and very light jets such as the Citation M2 Gen3 are the smallest common charter types. The PC-12 seats up to nine passengers and can use short runways, which suits Niagara District Airport and its 5,000-foot main runway.
Which private jets have a stand-up cabin?
From midsize upward. Textron describes the Citation Latitude and Longitude as having a six-foot (72-inch) cabin, and the Bombardier Challenger, Gulfstream and Falcon large-cabin models are similar or taller. Very light and light jets such as the Citation M2, CJ3 and CJ4 have 57-inch cabins.
Can a light jet fly from Toronto to Florida nonstop?
Usually, yes. Toronto to Miami is about 1,074 nautical miles in a straight line, well inside the published range of light jets such as the Citation CJ3 Gen3 or CJ4. Winter headwinds, a full cabin or a destination with a short runway can change that, and the operator decides.
What aircraft do I need to fly from Toronto to London nonstop?
Toronto to Farnborough is about 3,076 nautical miles in a straight line. Super-midsize jets are at the edge of their published range on that route, so we normally ask operators for large-cabin aircraft, such as a Challenger 650 or Falcon 2000LXS, or longer-range types for a comfortable margin.
Can I choose the exact aircraft model?
You can state a preference, and we will ask operators that fly it. The aircraft offered depends on what is available and positioned near your departure on your dates. Each quote names the aircraft type, so you always know what you are booking before you approve.
Do you charter helicopters in Niagara?
Niagara Helicopters runs sightseeing flights over the Falls, and we can drive you there and back. For point-to-point helicopter transfers we ask licensed helicopter operators on your behalf; availability depends on landing permissions at both ends.
