The American side of Niagara is not a single viewpoint. It is a park of islands, footbridges and cliff-top lawns that lets you walk out between the falls themselves, a very different experience from the long Canadian panorama. Niagara Falls State Park covers that ground, from Prospect Point to Goat Island and down the gorge. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives visitors there from Ontario hotels across the Rainbow Bridge and from Buffalo and Niagara Falls International airports, and links the park's scattered lookouts so nobody has to hunt for parking.
How do I visit Niagara Falls State Park from the Canadian side?
Niagara Falls State Park is at 304 Prospect Street, Niagara Falls, New York, about 3.5 km (2 mi) from Table Rock in Ontario, usually 8–10 minutes by car over the Rainbow Bridge plus the US border queue. NiagaraFallsLimo.net crosses with you, links Prospect Point, Goat Island and the gorge lookouts, and shows a fixed fare in the online booker before you pay.
From Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) the park is about 39 km (24 mi), usually 40 minutes. From Niagara Falls International (IAG) it is about 13 km (8 mi), roughly 18 minutes. From downtown Buffalo it is about 34 km (21 mi), around 35 minutes. None of those US-side starts involves the border.
A park with a long history
The park's own history pages describe it as America's oldest state park, created in 1885 as the Niagara Reservation, with Frederick Law Olmsted shaping its vision of the falls as public landscape rather than private industry. A few facts the park highlights, which guests tend to repeat at dinner:
- About 3,160 tons of water flow over Niagara Falls every second.
- In 1969 the American Falls were dewatered for six months so engineers could study the rock.
- In 1896 Nikola Tesla's alternating-current system sent Niagara power to Buffalo, the first long-distance commercial use of AC.
The park says it is open 365 days a year. The visitor hub is the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center.
The main areas, in the order we usually drive them
Prospect Point. The overlook above the American Falls and the home of the Maid of the Mist. The Observation Tower here gives the only panoramic view of all three falls, the American, the Bridal Veil and the Horseshoe; its deck and elevator are open without a boat ticket.
Goat Island. Reached by a short bridge from the city, it sits between the American and Horseshoe Falls. Cave of the Winds is here, along with the island lookouts listed below.
Terrapin Point. At the Goat Island edge of the Horseshoe Falls, with a lawn and a restaurant, and Cave of the Winds a short walk away.
Luna Island and Stedman's Bluff. Luna Island sits between the American and Bridal Veil Falls; Stedman's Bluff holds the Nikola Tesla statue.
Three Sisters Islands. Walkways lead out into the upper rapids, where the river picks up speed before the drop.
Down the gorge. The park lists the Schoellkopf Ruins, reached by a free elevator to the river's edge at the site of a power plant that collapsed in 1956; the Whirlpool, about two miles north, where the river bends into Class V rapids; and Devil's Hole, with views of the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Details are on the overlooks and vistas page.
Other attractions inside the park
- Aquarium of Niagara: more than 1,500 animals, with a second building, Great Lakes 360, opened in 2024; the park lists its parking at 701 Whirlpool Street. See the aquarium page.
- Above the Roar VR Experience and the Beyond the View walking tour, which the park says uses wheelchair-accessible trails.
- Niagara Scenic Trolley, listed by the park among its attractions; check the park site for its current route and season.
Parking, lots and where your car stops
The park runs four lots, according to its parking page, as of 2026:
| Lot | Location | Vehicles | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lot 1 | 333 Prospect Street, Prospect Point | Cars only | Daily fee; higher on summer weekends |
| Lot 2 | 15 Goat Island Loop Road | Cars only | Same fee schedule as Lot 1 |
| Lot 3 | 50 Goat Island Road | Cars, RVs, buses | Best for Three Sisters Islands; seasonal weekend fees |
| Lot 4 | 540 Discovery Way, at Great Lakes 360 | Cars only | Seasonal |
The park warns that lots fill early on weekends and holidays and suggests city lots near the park when they do. This is where a chauffeur saves the most time. Rather than parking once and walking the whole circuit, you are dropped at Prospect Point, collected and moved to Goat Island, then moved again to the gorge lookouts. The car waits nearby or circles back when you message, and you never pay for or search for a space.
Reserve a State Park day by the hour
Crossing from Ontario
Most of our guests start in Fallsview or on Clifton Hill and cross the Rainbow Bridge, which lands a short drive from Prospect Point. There is no toll going into the US; the toll is collected when re-entering Canada. Every passenger needs their own valid document: for Canadians and Americans a passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS card (and the US passport card for US citizens), and for most overseas visitors a passport plus an approved ESTA and a land-border I-94. The full checklist is on our documents for entering the USA page.
Two cautions we give everyone. First, we never estimate a crossing time; the queue belongs to US Customs and Border Protection on the way out and the Canada Border Services Agency on the way back. Second, think before buying souvenirs or wine to bring home. The CBSA's personal exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers, which our duty-free and declarations page explains.
How much time to give it
- Two hours: Prospect Point and the Observation Tower, then Terrapin Point. A taste of the American side.
- Half day: add the Maid of the Mist or Cave of the Winds, and Luna Island.
- Full day: both water attractions, the island lookouts, the aquarium, and a drive north along the gorge to the Whirlpool and Devil's Hole, finishing at Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown if the day is long.
For events and openings beyond the park itself, Destination Niagara USA, the official destination marketing organization for Niagara County, covers the wider New York side. Our Niagara Falls itineraries guide has sample one-, two- and three-day plans that use both sides of the river.
Seasons in the park
The park is open every day of the year, but its attractions keep their own calendars. The Maid of the Mist runs from late April to early November in 2026; Cave of the Winds is listed year-round with lower off-season pricing from mid-October. Winter brings ice formations on the islands and far fewer visitors, though walkways can be slick. Summer brings crowded lots, long Maid of the Mist lines and the busiest border days. The Falls are also illuminated nightly from both sides, and a late visit after dinner is a quiet way to see them; our falls illumination and fireworks page explains timing.
Getting there: honest comparison
| Mode | Door-to-door from Fallsview | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | 8–10 min plus border queues | Fixed fare via booker | Bags, strollers, car seats | Families, groups, multi-lookout days |
| Walk the Rainbow Bridge | Depends on the walk and inspection | Pedestrian toll US$1.00 / CA$1.25 (as of 2026) | Day bag | Fit walkers on Clifton Hill |
| Niagara Scenic Trolley (inside the park) | Within the park only | Park fare; check the park site | Minimal | Getting around once you are there |
| Taxi | Similar if it crosses | Metered | Trunk | US-side hotel guests |
| Rideshare | Hit and miss at the border | Surge pricing | Depends | Hops on the US side only |
| Driving yourself | 8–10 min plus queues | Toll back into Canada, park lot fees | Your trunk | Visitors with their own car |
The fair verdict: once you are in the park, your own feet handle a lot, and a guest staying at a hotel in Niagara Falls, New York, can easily taxi in. A chauffeur is the better choice when the day starts in Canada, when you have children, older relatives or a group, when the lots are full, or when you want to link the gorge lookouts that sit miles apart. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares them more fully.
Who the State Park suits
- Individuals: photographers get the brink-of-the-falls angles the Canadian side lacks; see solo travel in Niagara.
- Couples: Three Sisters Islands at a quiet hour is one of the calmest spots in the whole region.
- Families: the aquarium, the trolley and short walks keep children going; car seats are a booker option.
- Groups: Lot 3 is the bus lot, but a Sprinter or Stretch SUV Limousine with door-to-lookout drops avoids the long walks entirely.
Booking the State Park in 3 steps
- Start and finish. Enter your Ontario hotel, your US-side hotel or your arrival at Niagara Falls International or Buffalo, and "Niagara Falls State Park, Prospect Point" as the first stop. Choose "By the hour" to link the lookouts.
- Vehicle. Choose the class; each shows its fixed fare before you pay.
- Final details. Add passengers, child seats, a wheelchair option or meet & greet, pay securely, and receive the email confirmation.
If you are staying on the US side, see Niagara Falls NY hotels; for how we run every crossing, see cross-border car service. For a full guided-by-car day, our Niagara Falls private tour explains how a longer booking works, and the attractions hub lists more stops.
Frequently asked questions
Is Niagara Falls State Park free?
The park says it is open 365 days a year, and walking its lookouts costs nothing. You pay for parking if you drive, and separately for attractions such as the Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds and the aquarium. With a chauffeur, you skip the lots; the booker shows our fixed fare before you pay.
What is the difference between Niagara Falls State Park and Niagara Parks?
Niagara Falls State Park is on the New York side and is run as a New York state park. Niagara Parks is the Ontario agency that manages the Canadian riverfront, including Table Rock, Journey Behind the Falls and Niagara City Cruises. They face each other across the gorge.
Can you see the Horseshoe Falls from the American side?
Yes, from Terrapin Point on Goat Island, at the American edge of the Horseshoe Falls. The Canadian side, from Table Rock, has the head-on view of the whole curve, while Terrapin Point looks along it from the American end. Many visitors want both, which is why a one-day, two-country plan is so popular.
Where should I park at Niagara Falls State Park?
The park runs Lot 1 at Prospect Point and Lot 2 on Goat Island for cars, Lot 3 on Goat Island for cars, RVs and buses, and seasonal Lot 4 at Great Lakes 360. Lots fill early on weekends. A chauffeured car avoids parking altogether by dropping you at each area in turn.
Do I need a passport to visit Niagara Falls State Park from Canada?
Yes, or another document accepted at US land borders. Canadians and Americans may use an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS card, US citizens a passport card, and citizen children under 16 a birth certificate. Most overseas visitors need a passport and an approved ESTA, plus an I-94 at the border.
How long should I spend at Niagara Falls State Park?
Two hours covers Prospect Point and Terrapin Point. A half day adds the Maid of the Mist or Cave of the Winds. A full day takes in the island lookouts, the aquarium and the gorge to the Whirlpool and Devil's Hole, with time left for Old Fort Niagara.
Is the State Park open in winter?
Yes. The park is open every day of the year, though the Maid of the Mist does not sail between November and its spring opening. Winter brings ice on the islands and quiet walkways; dress warmly and expect slippery paths. Some attractions keep shorter hours in the off-season.
