A Great Lakes cruise with a Niagara call used to be a rare thing. In 2026 it is routine: small expedition and coastal ships tie up in downtown Toronto and in Port Colborne, at the Lake Erie end of the Welland Canal, from spring to late October. NiagaraFallsLimo.net meets passengers at both piers, for a private shore day at the Falls, a transfer to a hotel before or after the voyage, or a ride to the airport on disembarkation morning.
Which Great Lakes cruises stop near Niagara Falls?
Great Lakes cruises call at two ports near Niagara: Toronto's cruise terminal at 8 Unwin Avenue, about 130 km (81 mi) from Niagara Falls, and Port Colborne on the Welland Canal, about 33 km (21 mi) away. NiagaraFallsLimo.net meets your ship at either pier and shows a fixed fare in the online booker before you pay.
Two kinds of passenger use these ports. Some are on a port call and have a single day ashore before the ship sails on through the canal. Others are starting or ending their cruise in Toronto and need a transfer from an airport or a Niagara hotel to the ship, or from the ship onward. Both trips are booked the same way; what changes is the timing.
The 2026 season at a glance
The cruise schedule is published by the ports themselves, and it is the only source we use.
- Toronto. The Toronto Port Authority's 2026 schedule lists seven ships from five lines: Viking Polaris (April 16 – October 12), Viking Octantis (April 25 – October 9), Victory Cruise Lines' Victory I (April 26 – October 27) and Victory II (May 2 – October 3), Pearl Seas' Pearl Mist (May 21 – September 29), Ponant's Le Bellot (August 11 – September 24) and Hapag-Lloyd's Hanseatic Inspiration (September 29 – October 15) (Toronto cruise ship schedule).
- Port Colborne. The city expects 66 cruise ship visits in 2026, from mid-April through the end of October, from Viking, Victory Cruise Lines, Pearl Seas Cruises and Ponant (Port Colborne cruise ships). Ships dock right downtown.
- The lines. Viking's Great Lakes programme includes "Niagara & the Great Lakes", an eight-day voyage between Toronto and Milwaukee on its expedition ships Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris. Victory Cruise Lines sells itineraries that begin or end in Toronto.
Schedules for 2027 come from the same ports when published. Give us your ship and date and we work from the official call time.
Toronto's cruise terminal to Niagara Falls
The Port of Toronto Cruise Ship Terminal is at 8 Unwin Avenue, at the corner of Unwin Avenue and Cherry Street, on the eastern waterfront. Passengers embark and disembark at the North Door, and the port notes the terminal can be reached by car or taxi; the TTC 202 bus serves it seasonally from mid-May to October, with the nearest stop at Cherry Street and Unwin Avenue (Toronto cruise terminal location).

From Unwin Avenue to Niagara Falls is about 130–135 km (81–84 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak. The car leaves the Port Lands via Cherry Street to Lake Shore Boulevard and the Gardiner Expressway, then follows the QEW around the lake. Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 130 km on a similar route.
Common Toronto cruise trips we drive:
- Pre-cruise night at the Falls. Land at Toronto Pearson, spend a night at a Fallsview hotel, then ride to the terminal on embarkation day.
- Post-cruise day. Disembark at the North Door with your luggage, ride straight to the Falls or Niagara-on-the-Lake for a night or two, then on to your flight home.
- Straight to an airport. Terminal to Pearson, or across the border to Buffalo Niagara (BUF) if your flight home leaves from the United States.

Port Colborne: a port call 33 km from the Falls
Port Colborne sits at the southern, Lake Erie end of the Welland Canal. The city's tourism pages describe shore tours that include a canal walk and a crossing of the lift bridge, and ships tie up within walking distance of the town centre.
For a Niagara day, Port Colborne is closer than most passengers expect:
| From the Port Colborne dock to | Approx. distance | Usual drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Table Rock and the Horseshoe Falls | about 33 km (21 mi) | 35–45 min |
| Niagara-on-the-Lake Old Town | about 52 km (32 mi) | 50–60 min |
| Welland Canals Centre, Lock 3, St. Catharines | about 35–40 km | 35–45 min |
| Buffalo, NY, via the Peace Bridge | about 35–45 km | 40–50 min plus the border |
That puts a full Falls visit, a winery lunch, or both, within one port call, provided the day is planned backwards from the time you must be on board.
Planning a shore day backwards from all-aboard
The ship will not wait, so we plan the day in reverse:
- Fix the all-aboard time from your cruise documents, and decide how early you want to be back at the gangway. We suggest at least 45 minutes before all-aboard, more on summer weekends.
- Count the return drive with a margin: 45 minutes or more from the Falls, an hour from Niagara-on-the-Lake.
- Fill the middle. A typical six-hour day: Table Rock and Journey Behind the Falls, the Niagara Parkway north past the Floral Clock, lunch in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and back down the Welland Canal corridor.
Book in "By the hour" mode so the car stays with you all day. The chauffeur keeps an eye on the clock and will say plainly when it is time to head back. Our private Niagara Falls tour and Niagara wine tour limo pages have ready-made routes.
Crossing to the US side on a port call is possible but adds border inspection twice, and nobody can promise how long either queue will take. On a short call we usually advise staying in Canada. If you do cross, every passenger needs their own valid documents; see what you need to cross into the US.
The Welland Canal, seen from the land
Your ship may spend hours in the canal, but watching another vessel lock through from the shore is a different experience. The Welland Canal is 23.5 nautical miles long, with eight locks, and links Lake Ontario and Lake Erie (Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway).
The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre at Lock 3 has a viewing platform beside the lock. Admission is by donation; ships are scheduled by the Seaway, usually no more than 24 hours ahead, and a lockage takes about 20 minutes (Welland Canals Centre visitor information). It makes a good first or last stop on a shore day. See our Welland Canals Centre guide.
The other cruises: boat tours at the Falls
Plenty of searches for a "Niagara cruise" are really about the short boat rides into the mist. There are three, and your chauffeur can drop you at any of them.
- Niagara City Cruises (Canadian side). The official Niagara Parks boat tour, from the dock at 5920 Niagara Parkway. "Voyage to the Falls" passes the American and Bridal Veil Falls into the Horseshoe Falls mist, and a Fireworks Cruise runs after dark. The season is April to November, the boats are wheelchair accessible and tickets are timed (Niagara Parks: Niagara City Cruises). See our Niagara City Cruises guide.
- Maid of the Mist (US side). From Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, New York. The 2026 season runs April 24 to November 8. Crossing from Canada needs a passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a trusted-traveller card. See our Maid of the Mist guide.
- Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours. About 45 minutes through the Devil's Hole Rapids and into the Niagara Whirlpool, departing from Queenston, Ontario or Lewiston, New York.
Ways to get from the pier to the Falls, compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | 35–45 min from Port Colborne; 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 from Toronto | Fixed fare via the booker, shown before you pay | Full cruise luggage in an SUV | Couples, families, small groups wanting their own pace |
| Ship's shore excursion coach | Set by the excursion | Sold by the cruise line | Day bag only | Passengers who want the ship to manage timing |
| Taxi | Similar drive time | Metered | Sedan or minivan | Short hops in town |
| Rideshare | Similar if a car is available at the pier | App price, surge pricing possible | Depends on the car | Toronto disembarkation with light bags |
| Transit (TTC 202 + GO) | Several hours from Toronto | Separate fares | You carry it | Not practical with cruise luggage |
When the ship's excursion is the better choice
We will say it plainly: on a short port call, the cruise line's own excursion has one real advantage. The cruise line organises its timing and answers for it; on an independent trip, getting back on time is your responsibility and ours together. Passengers who would rather not think about the clock at all should book the ship's tour.
A private chauffeur suits you when you want your own pace and your own stops, when you are travelling as a family or with friends who want different things than a coach of 40, when mobility makes coach steps hard, or when you are beginning or ending the cruise and have suitcases rather than a day bag.
Vehicles for cruise passengers
Cruise luggage is the deciding factor. Two suitcases each for a ten-night voyage fill a sedan quickly.
| Vehicle class | Passengers | Bags | Cruise fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Sedan (Cadillac XTS or similar) | up to 3 | 2 large | Shore days; light-packing couples |
| Standard SUV (Suburban / Yukon XL) | up to 6 | 6 | Embarkation and disembarkation |
| Executive Black SUV (Escalade / Navigator) | up to 6 | 6 | The same, with the premium cabin |
| Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz) | up to 12 | carry-on only | Shore days for larger parties |
| Executive Jet Sprinter | up to 6 | 2 | Shore days in comfort |
The Executive Sprinter is ideal for a shore day but carries carry-on bags only, so for a group with full cruise luggage book two SUVs or ask about adding a vehicle. See the fleet and our group transportation page.
Who books cruise transfers
Individuals travelling solo on expedition ships book a sedan for a quiet shore day. Couples are the core of Great Lakes cruising and often combine a Falls morning with a winery lunch; our couples page has ideas. Families on multi-generation voyages want grandparents and children in one car with car seats and short walks. Groups of friends sailing together fill a Sprinter for the day. If you are arriving by rail before the voyage, train station transfers cover Niagara and Toronto stations.
How to book a cruise transfer in 3 steps
- Enter the pier and the destination. Pickup: the Toronto cruise terminal on Unwin Avenue or the Port Colborne dock. Drop-off: the Falls, a hotel, a winery or an airport. Add the date, the ship's name and the time you will be ashore.
- Choose the vehicle, by passengers and by luggage, and see each class's fixed all-in fare. For a shore day, choose "By the hour".
- Add passengers, bags and extras, then pay. Your confirmation arrives by email; put the all-aboard time in the notes so the chauffeur plans the return.

Frequently asked questions
Do Great Lakes cruises stop at Niagara Falls?
Ships do not dock at the Falls themselves. They call at Port Colborne on the Welland Canal, about 33 km away, and at Toronto, about 130 km away. From either port, a car takes you to Table Rock and the Horseshoe Falls, or a ship's excursion coach does.
How far is Port Colborne from Niagara Falls?
About 33 km (21 mi) by road from the Port Colborne dock to the Table Rock area, usually 35–45 minutes. Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 52 km, usually 50–60 minutes.
Where is the Toronto cruise ship terminal?
At 8 Unwin Avenue, at the corner of Unwin Avenue and Cherry Street in Toronto's Port Lands. Passengers embark and disembark at the North Door. The TTC 202 bus serves it seasonally, mid-May to October.
Can I see Niagara Falls on a one-day port call?
Yes, from Port Colborne. With six hours ashore you can see the Horseshoe Falls, ride the Niagara Parkway and have lunch in Niagara-on-the-Lake, then return with a comfortable margin. Plan the day backwards from all-aboard and stay on the Canadian side unless the call is long.
What is the difference between Niagara City Cruises and Maid of the Mist?
Niagara City Cruises sails from the Canadian side at 5920 Niagara Parkway; Maid of the Mist sails from Prospect Point on the New York side. Both run past the American Falls into the Horseshoe Falls basin. Visiting Maid of the Mist from Canada means crossing the border with valid documents.
How much is a private car from the cruise port to Niagara Falls?
The online booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your pier, destination and vehicle before you pay. For a shore day, choose "By the hour" and the booker prices the hours you select.
