Most people photograph Niagara from a railing. At Cave of the Winds you stand on wooden decks in the spray at the base of the falls on the New York side, and you will get soaked. It is on Goat Island, the wooded island that splits the American and Horseshoe Falls, inside Niagara Falls State Park. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives guests there from Ontario hotels across the Rainbow Bridge, and from Buffalo Niagara International for those flying in on the US side, then waits or returns while they dry off.
How do I get to Cave of the Winds from the Canadian side?
Cave of the Winds is at 10 Goat Island Loop Road, Niagara Falls, New York, inside Niagara Falls State Park. From Table Rock in Ontario it is about 4.5 km (3 mi), usually 9–12 minutes by car across the Rainbow Bridge, plus the US border queue. NiagaraFallsLimo.net crosses with you, and the online booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.
From Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) the drive is about 40 km (25 mi), usually 40–45 minutes, with no border to cross. From Niagara Falls International (IAG) it is about 14 km (9 mi), around 20 minutes. Either way, the last stretch crosses a short bridge from the city onto Goat Island.
Why cross the border for it
Visitors in Ontario often ask whether it is worth the crossing when Canada has Journey Behind the Falls. They are different experiences. Journey Behind the Falls takes you down 125 ft into tunnels and onto a deck at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls, all within Canada and open year-round, according to Niagara Parks. Cave of the Winds puts you outside on timber walkways, with the Hurricane Deck as its signature point, right beside the American-side water.
If you only have time for one, Journey is the simpler choice: no passport, no bridge. If your group wants to feel the falls rather than view them, and everyone has documents, Cave of the Winds is the more physical, memorable one. Plenty of families do both on the same day.
Tickets, hours and closures
The official Cave of the Winds page on the State Park site sets out the essentials (checked October 2026):

- Open: year-round and daily, generally 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the last ticket sold, with an earlier last ticket on 24 December.
- Closed: 26 November (US Thanksgiving), 25 December and 1 January. It was also closed for maintenance on 19–20 October 2026.
- Tickets: timed, and sold only on site, at the attraction on Goat Island or at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center. They are not available online, and the park advises reserving early in the day.
- Prices (as of 2026): they change with the season. From 19 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 the listed price is US$14 for adults and US$10 for youth; the summer rate, to 18 October, was US$23 and US$19.
- Combo: a package with the Beyond the View walking tour is offered.
Because tickets are timed and sold in person, your arrival time matters. On a summer weekend, the time printed on your ticket may be well after the moment you buy it. Your chauffeur's job is to get you to the ticket window early, then to fill any gap sensibly.
What to wear
The park is plain about it: the famous Cave of the Winds sandals are no longer handed out, so bring footwear you do not mind getting wet. Practical advice from our side of the car:
- Water shoes or old trainers, plus a dry pair in a bag for afterwards.
- A light layer you can take off; spray in the sun is cold.
- A small towel and a plastic bag for wet clothes. Your chauffeur can keep the dry kit in the vehicle while you are on the deck, if you book by the hour.
- Phones in a waterproof pouch, or left in the car.
Crossing the river: which bridge
Three Niagara Falls Bridge Commission crossings lead into the US near the falls. The NFBC's own guide explains which vehicles may use which:
- Rainbow Bridge: the nearest to Goat Island; open to cars and limousines. This is our default route; see the Rainbow Bridge page.
- Whirlpool Rapids Bridge: NEXUS members only, open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. A chauffeured car may use it only if every person on board, the driver included, holds a NEXUS card; see the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge page.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge: further north, useful if you are coming from Niagara-on-the-Lake.
No toll is charged entering the US; the toll is collected on the way back into Canada. Before you leave, look at live waits: the CBP Border Wait Times site covers the US-bound side and the CBSA border wait times page covers the return. Our border wait times guide explains how to read them. Nobody, including us, can promise how long inspection will take.
Reserve your Goat Island chauffeur
Documents in brief
Each passenger carries their own: Canadian and US citizens a passport, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card (US citizens may also use a passport card); citizen children under 16 a birth certificate; visitors from abroad a passport plus an approved ESTA or US visa, with an I-94 at a US$30 land-border fee. Read what you need to enter the US before the day, and never carry cannabis across.
Where the car stops on Goat Island
Goat Island is part of the State Park and has its own car lots. The park lists Lot 2 at 15 Goat Island Loop Road (cars only) and Lot 3 at 50 Goat Island Road (cars, RVs and buses, with seasonal fees), and warns on its parking page that lots fill early on weekends and holidays. With a chauffeur, the lots do not matter to you: we drop you as near to the Cave of the Winds entrance as park traffic rules allow and pick up at an agreed point when you message.
For a wheelchair user, ask the park about deck access before you go; the walking-tour combo uses wheelchair-accessible trails according to the park. Our accessible transportation page explains the wheelchair option in the booker.
A Goat Island half day
Cave of the Winds is the anchor, but Goat Island rewards an extra hour. The State Park describes these lookouts on its overlooks page:
- Terrapin Point: above the Horseshoe Falls, a short walk from Cave of the Winds, with a lawn and a restaurant.
- Luna Island: between the American and Bridal Veil Falls, with a bird's-eye view down to the Cave of the Winds decks.
- Stedman's Bluff: home to the Nikola Tesla statue, with views of Luna Island and the American Falls.
- Three Sisters Islands: reached by walkways into the upper rapids, where the river gathers speed before the drop.
Add the Maid of the Mist from Prospect Point and you have seen the American side from the deck, the water and the island. Our Niagara Falls State Park page covers the rest of the park.
Winter visits
The attraction is listed as open year-round, and the off-season price applies from mid-October to the end of March. Winter conditions on Goat Island are cold and icy, so expect a different, shorter experience than in July, and check the official page on the day. Pair it with the Canadian side's lights; our Niagara Falls in winter guide has more ideas.
Ways to get there compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time from Table Rock | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | 9–12 min plus border queues | Fixed fare via booker | Dry clothes stay in the car | Families, groups, wet guests |
| Walk via Rainbow Bridge | Long walk to Goat Island plus inspection | Pedestrian toll US$1.00 / CA$1.25 (as of 2026) | What you carry | Fit walkers travelling light |
| Taxi | Similar if it crosses | Metered; not every cab crosses | Trunk | Rides on one side only |
| Rideshare | Unreliable across the border | Surge pricing; drivers may not cross | Depends | Short US-side hops once there |
| Driving yourself | 9–12 min plus queues | Toll back into Canada; park lot fees (as of 2026) | Your trunk | Visitors with a car and papers |
Where the alternatives make sense: if you are already staying in Niagara Falls, New York, a short taxi to Goat Island is entirely reasonable, and keen walkers on Clifton Hill can cross the Rainbow Bridge on foot. Where a chauffeur clearly wins: children and car seats, older travellers, groups, anyone who wants their dry clothes waiting, and days that combine both sides of the river. For more, see our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide.
Who Cave of the Winds suits
- Individuals: a quick, intense experience you can do in a morning.
- Couples: a soaking, then lunch with a view; it is a story you will both tell.
- Families: older children love it; parents of small ones should check the deck conditions first. See Niagara with kids.
- Groups: tour groups can request group rates from the park; a Sprinter seats up to 12, and each traveller clears the border on their own documents.

Frequently asked questions
Can you buy Cave of the Winds tickets online?
No. The State Park says tickets are timed and sold only at the attraction on Goat Island or at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center, not online. Arrive early on busy days, because the time on your ticket may be later than the time you buy it.
Is Cave of the Winds open in winter?
It is listed as open year-round, daily, generally until a last ticket at 4 p.m., with closures on US Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Winter is colder and icier, with a lower off-season price from mid-October to March. Check the official page on the morning you plan to go.
Cave of the Winds or Journey Behind the Falls?
Journey Behind the Falls is on the Canadian side, needs no passport and takes you into tunnels at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls. Cave of the Winds is on the American side and puts you out on open decks in the spray. Choose Journey for simplicity, Cave of the Winds for the soaking.
Do I need a passport for Cave of the Winds?
If you start in Canada, yes, or another document accepted at US land borders: an enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card for Canadians and Americans, or a US passport card for US citizens. Citizen children under 16 may use a birth certificate. Visitors from abroad need a passport and an ESTA or visa.
Will I get wet at Cave of the Winds?
Yes, very. Sandals are no longer provided, so wear footwear you are happy to soak and bring a dry change. If your chauffeur is booked by the hour, the dry bag can stay in the vehicle while you are on the deck.
How long does a Cave of the Winds visit take?
The time on the decks is fairly short, but with the border, buying a timed ticket and any wait for your slot, plan a half day from a Canadian hotel. Adding Terrapin Point, Luna Island and the Maid of the Mist turns it into a full American-side day.
How much is a car to Cave of the Winds?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay, whether you book one way, return or by the hour. There is no meter, and no surge pricing if the bridge is busy.
