Most visitors to Niagara fly into Toronto or Buffalo. Some find the flight that suits them lands at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC), about 140 km east of the Falls, and ask whether Rochester airport to Niagara Falls is a sensible way in. It can be. NiagaraFallsLimo.net meets arrivals at ROC and drives them west across Western New York and over the border to Niagara Falls, Ontario, or to hotels on the New York side, at a fixed fare shown in the booker before you pay.
This page covers the drive, the border, the documents and an honest comparison with flying into Buffalo instead.
How far is Rochester airport from Niagara Falls, and how do I get there?
Rochester airport (ROC) is about 135 km (84 mi) from Niagara Falls State Park in New York and about 140 km (87 mi) from the Horseshoe Falls in Ontario, usually 1 h 50 – 2 h 10 by road plus any border wait. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives it door to door; enter your flight in the online booker for a fixed fare.
Those are road-routing distances with no traffic. Lewiston, New York, beside the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge, is about 133 km from ROC, and Niagara-on-the-Lake about 143 km. In US terms, think of it as an 85- to 90-mile drive, almost all of it on interstates.
About Greater Rochester International Airport
ROC is a compact airport on the south-west side of Rochester, at 1200 Brooks Avenue. On its own information page it describes itself as a small hub with about 120 flights a day to 19 nonstop destinations, serving about 2.4 million passengers a year.
Its nonstop page lists these carriers in 2026:
- Delta: Atlanta, Detroit and New York.
- Southwest: Baltimore and Orlando.
- American: Boston, Charlotte, Chicago and Philadelphia.
- United: Chicago and Newark.
- JetBlue: New York JFK, with Orlando listed from March 26, 2026.
- Breeze, Avelo and Allegiant.
Spirit Airlines stopped flying from ROC in January 2026, so older travel advice that mentions it is out of date. ROC lists US Customs in the West Terminal's lower-level International Arrivals Hall, with stated hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., which matters only if you are arriving on an international flight into ROC itself.
Why fly into Rochester for Niagara?
Be clear about the geography first. Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) is only about 42 km from the Falls, and Niagara Falls International (IAG) about 14 km. Rochester is more than three times further than Buffalo. So ROC makes sense when:

- the flight is better. A nonstop from your city, a better time of day or a carrier you prefer may exist into ROC but not into BUF;
- you are already in the Rochester area, visiting family, a university or the Finger Lakes, and Niagara is the next stop;
- you are combining trips, for example a conference in Rochester followed by a weekend at the Falls;
- plans changed, such as a diverted or rebooked flight, and you still need to reach a Niagara hotel tonight.
If none of these applies, compare our Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls and Niagara Falls International pages; the shorter drive may suit you better.
The drive: Rochester airport to Niagara Falls
The usual route runs entirely on limited-access highway until the last few kilometres:
- I-490 west out of Rochester from the airport area.
- The New York State Thruway (I-90) west across Genesee County farmland towards Buffalo. The Thruway is a toll road with cashless tolling; on a chauffeured trip any toll is the vehicle's, not yours.
- I-290, the Youngmann Expressway, around the north side of Buffalo.
- I-190, the Niagara Thruway, north over Grand Island towards Niagara Falls, New York.
- A Niagara bridge. For the Canadian side, the chauffeur chooses between the Rainbow Bridge, which lands you beside Clifton Hill, and the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge further north, which suits Niagara-on-the-Lake. For New York-side hotels, no crossing is needed.
Western New York weather is part of the plan from November to March. Lake-effect snow can slow the Thruway, and the chauffeur will build that into the pickup and route.

Crossing into Canada from Rochester
Because ROC is in the United States, a trip to Niagara Falls, Ontario, always includes a land border crossing. The crossing is routine for us and the chauffeur stays with you throughout, yet each passenger must carry their own valid documents and answer the officer's questions.
- US citizens entering Canada: Niagara Falls Tourism's border page says US citizens over 16 need a passport, a passport card or an enhanced driver's licence. Coming home, US Customs and Border Protection lists the documents it accepts at the land border under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
- Visitors from other countries: you will be entering Canada by land, and then the US again on the way home. Check what your passport requires in both directions before you fly; our international visitors page is a starting point.
- Children: under-16 US and Canadian citizens have different document rules; if one parent is travelling alone with a child, read crossing the border with children.
Which bridge, and how long it takes, is decided on the day. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission operates the Rainbow and Lewiston–Queenston bridges, and our Lewiston–Queenston Bridge and Rainbow Bridge guides explain each. We never promise a crossing time.
Meeting you at ROC
With flight tracking, the pickup follows your actual landing time, not the schedule printed on your ticket. A meet and greet with a name board in the arrivals area is a booker option; see meet and greet. Otherwise, the chauffeur sends contact details before you land and meets you at the arrivals curb once you have your bags. Put your flight number in the booker and, if your bags are checked, allow for the carousel.

Rochester airport to Niagara Falls: the realistic options
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car, driving yourself | About 2 h plus the border | Rental rate, fuel and tolls; check the rental company's cross-border policy | Whatever fits | Travellers who want a car for the whole trip |
| Rideshare (Uber, Lyft) | About 2 h if a driver accepts | Surge pricing at busy times; a cross-border trip may not be possible | Depends on the car | New York-side destinations only |
| Taxi | About 2 h | Metered or negotiated for a long trip | Standard trunk | Rare; ask before you get in |
| Bus or train with connections | Several hours with changes | Operator's published fares | Operator's allowance | Travellers on a tight budget with time to spare |
| NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeur | About 2 h door to door, plus the border | Fixed fare via the booker | Set by the vehicle class | Families, groups, late arrivals, Canadian-side hotels |
Niagara Falls International notes on its own ground-transportation page that rideshare services may not cross the border, and the same caution applies to a long rideshare from Rochester. If your hotel is in Ontario, confirm the crossing before you rely on an app. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes further.
When another option beats a chauffeur from ROC
Honesty first. Rent a car if you want to explore Western New York, the Finger Lakes or the Niagara wine country at your own pace for several days and you are comfortable driving across the border. Take a rideshare if you are staying on the New York side, travelling alone with a single bag, and a driver will take the trip.
A chauffeur is the better choice when you are heading to the Canadian side; you land late in the evening; you are a family with car seats or a group with bags; you want someone who knows the bridges; or you simply want to sleep for two hours after a flight rather than drive the Thruway in the dark.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to fly into Rochester, Buffalo or Toronto for Niagara Falls?
Buffalo is the closest large airport, about 42 km from the Falls, and Toronto Pearson is about 122–128 km on the Canadian side. Rochester is about 140 km away, so choose it when its flight times or nonstop routes suit you better, or when you are already visiting the Rochester area.

About 135 km (84 mi) to the New York side and about 140 km (87 mi) to the Horseshoe Falls in Ontario, usually 1 h 50 – 2 h 10 via I-490, the Thruway, I-290 and I-190. A border crossing adds time that nobody can predict in advance.
Can a car service from Rochester take me into Canada?
Yes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives cross-border trips as normal service, and the chauffeur crosses the bridge with you. Every passenger must carry their own valid documents, such as a passport, and answer the border officer's questions.
Can I take an Uber from Rochester airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?
A rideshare driver may accept the long trip to the New York side, but crossing into Canada is not guaranteed; Niagara Falls International warns that rideshare services may not cross the border. A pre-booked chauffeur confirms the crossing, the vehicle and the fixed fare before you travel.
How much is a car service from Rochester airport to Niagara Falls?
The fare depends on your exact destination, date, time and vehicle class. NiagaraFallsLimo.net shows the fixed, all-in fare for your trip in its online booker before you pay, so there are no meter surprises on a two-hour drive.
What if my flight into ROC is delayed?
Flight tracking moves the pickup to your actual landing time, so a delay does not leave you stranded. If the flight is cancelled or rebooked to another airport, update the booking or contact the reservations desk and we will adjust the pickup.
Do I need a passport to go from Rochester to Niagara Falls, Ontario?
US citizens over 16 entering Canada need a passport, a passport card or an enhanced driver's licence, according to Niagara Falls Tourism, and need an accepted document to re-enter the US. Visitors from other countries should check both countries' rules for their passport before they fly.
