The Niagara River is an international border, and for many visitors the best day of the trip involves crossing it: breakfast on the Canadian side, the Cave of the Winds on Goat Island in New York, dinner back in Ontario. Crossing the border at Niagara Falls is routine, but it rewards a little preparation. NiagaraFallsLimo.net makes these crossings every week, and this hub gathers what we tell our own passengers before they get in the car.
Which bridge should you use to cross the border at Niagara Falls?
Passenger cars and limousines cross at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge about 16 km north, or the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie, about 30 km south. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is NEXUS-only. NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeurs choose the bridge on the day; book a cross-border trip in the online booker.
There is no single best bridge. The right one depends on where you are going, the time of day, and whether every person in the car holds a NEXUS card. Our chauffeurs look at the live waits before leaving and pick accordingly.
The four Niagara bridges compared
| Bridge | Connects | Who may cross by vehicle | Hours | Toll (cars, as of 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rainbow Bridge | Niagara Falls, ON and Niagara Falls, NY, beside the Falls | Cars, RVs, buses, limousines; no trucks | 24 hours (per CBP) | US$6.00 / CA$8.50, entering Canada only |
| Whirlpool Rapids Bridge | Downtown Niagara Falls, ON and NY, near the VIA station | Cars only, and only if every occupant is a NEXUS member | 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. | US$6.00 / CA$8.50, entering Canada only |
| Lewiston-Queenston Bridge | Queenston, ON and Lewiston, NY | Cars, RVs, buses, limousines and trucks | 24 hours (per CBP) | US$6.00 / CA$8.50, entering Canada only |
| Peace Bridge | Fort Erie, ON and Buffalo, NY | Cars, buses and trucks | 24 hours (per CBP) | US$8.00 / CA$11.00 by card, entering Canada only |
The first three are run by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, which publishes vehicle rules for each crossing. The Peace Bridge is run by the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority, and its toll lanes are cashless. No bridge charges a toll to enter the United States. The bridge authorities collect tolls; customs and immigration are separate federal agencies on each side.
Bridge by bridge

- Rainbow Bridge: the crossing within sight of the Falls, reached from the QEW at exit 420. It carries cars, buses and limos but no commercial trucks, which keeps it a passenger crossing. It is the natural choice for the Maid of the Mist and Niagara Falls State Park.
- Peace Bridge: the southern crossing between Fort Erie and Buffalo, often the most direct route for Buffalo Niagara International Airport and downtown Buffalo. It handles heavy truck traffic in separate lanes.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge: the northern crossing below Queenston Heights, linking to Highway 405 in Ontario and I-190 in New York. It suits trips to Lewiston, Old Fort Niagara and Niagara Falls International Airport, and it is the only Commission bridge that takes trucks.
- Whirlpool Rapids Bridge: a NEXUS-only crossing. If one passenger in the car lacks a NEXUS card, the car cannot use it.
What documents does each passenger need?
The rule we repeat to every client: each traveller carries their own valid documents, and the chauffeur cannot vouch for anyone. What counts as valid depends on citizenship and direction.
Going into the United States by land. Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, US citizens may show a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. Canadian citizens may show a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a trusted traveller card. US and Canadian children under 16 need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. Full details are on what you need to cross into the US.
Coming into Canada by land. The Canada Border Services Agency recommends that US citizens carry a valid passport, though it lists alternatives that prove name, date of birth and citizenship. Visitors from visa-exempt countries do not need an eTA when they arrive by car, because the eTA applies to air travel. Visa-required nationals still need a visitor visa. See what you need to cross into Canada.
Visitors from overseas doing both sides of the Falls face extra steps on the US side, including an approved ESTA for Visa Waiver travellers and an I-94 record, which CBP now issues electronically. Our guide for international visitors to Niagara Falls walks through the sequence, and it is worth reading before you book a US-side tour.
NEXUS and trusted traveller lanes
NEXUS lanes can be much faster, but they come with a strict rule from the CBSA: everyone in the vehicle, including the driver, must be a NEXUS member carrying their card. A chauffeured car carrying one non-member uses the regular lanes. Lane hours also vary: at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, for example, the Canada-bound NEXUS lane runs daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Read NEXUS and trusted travellers at Niagara before you assume the fast lane applies to your group.
Children, custody and consent letters
Families cross every day, but children travelling without both parents need extra paper. Global Affairs Canada says a consent letter is not legally required in Canada, yet officials may ask for one, and not having it can cause delays. It recommends one for any child under 19 travelling without both parents, signed by the absent parent, ideally witnessed by a notary. Our page on crossing the border with children includes what to bring for shared custody and school groups.
Declarations, duty-free and the cannabis rule
Everything you bring back must be declared on request. Canada's personal exemptions depend on how long you were away: same-day shoppers get no exemption, while 48 hours or more allows goods up to CA$800 including limited wine, beer or spirits. One rule has no exceptions: the CBSA states that taking cannabis across the border in any form without a Health Canada permit or exemption remains a serious criminal offence, and US federal law also prohibits it. Read duty-free and declarations at Niagara for the full allowances.
Reading the wait times
Two federal sources publish live waits. The CBSA border wait times page shows US-to-Canada traffic at the Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge and Queenston-Lewiston Bridge. CBP's Border Wait Times site and app cover the US-bound direction, and CBP notes the time shown may be up to an hour old. Neither includes the queue on the approach roads. How to read Niagara Falls border wait times explains the patterns we see, such as holiday long weekends and Bills game days, and why we never promise a crossing time.
How a chauffeured crossing works
- Before pickup, the chauffeur checks the waits and the lanes open at each bridge.
- At the booth, the chauffeur speaks first and then the officer may address each passenger. Have documents in hand, sunglasses off, and answer questions yourself.
- Officers may inspect the vehicle or refer it to secondary inspection. That is normal and not a reflection on you.
- On the far side, the trip continues to your hotel, the Niagara Falls State Park, Buffalo Niagara airport or a stadium, with the same car and chauffeur.
Our cross-border car service explains the trip types, and the Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Canada page covers the most common crossing of all.
Ways to cross the border at Niagara Falls
| Way to cross | Door-to-door time (Fallsview hotel to the US State Park) | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | Depends on your hotel, plus inspection | Pedestrian toll as of 2026: US$1.00 / CA$1.25 (charged leaving Canada) | Daypack only | Fit couples and solo visitors with passports |
| Rideshare | Often not possible; drivers may not cross | Surge pricing | Depends on the car | Rides on one side only |
| Taxi | Some cross, many do not | Metered | Standard trunk | Short trips on one side |
| Tour coach | Fixed schedule, group processing | Per seat, set by the operator | Day bags | Visitors happy with a set itinerary |
| Driving yourself | Drive plus the queue | Bridge toll entering Canada, parking each side | Your trunk | Travellers with their own car and documents |
| Private chauffeur | Drive plus the queue, door to door | Fixed fare via the booker | Matched to the vehicle | Families, groups, airport runs, two-country days |
If you are two adults with passports staying near the Falls and want an hour on Goat Island, walk the Rainbow Bridge: it is a pleasant walk and costs only the small pedestrian toll. Choose a chauffeur when you have luggage, children, an airport on the far side, a group, or a two-country itinerary that would otherwise need parking on both sides. The chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares them in more depth.
Who crosses with us
Individuals cross for business in Buffalo or a flight from BUF. Couples book a two-country day around the Maid of the Mist. Families appreciate one car with seats fitted, so nobody walks a bridge with a toddler. Groups travel in a Sprinter so everyone clears together; see Niagara Falls with kids for family planning tips.

Frequently asked questions
Can you take a taxi from Niagara Falls, Canada to Buffalo Airport?
Some taxis cross, but it is not guaranteed. Niagara Falls International Airport warns that rideshare services may not cross the border. A pre-booked cross-border car is planned for the crossing from the start, and the same chauffeur takes you all the way to the terminal.
Do I need a passport to cross from Niagara Falls, Canada to the US?
Canadian citizens need a passport, enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. US citizens can also use a passport card. Children under 16 who are US or Canadian citizens may show a birth certificate. Other nationalities need a passport and the right US authorization.
How long does it take to cross the border at Niagara Falls?
It changes hour by hour, so nobody can promise a time. Check the CBSA page for Canada-bound waits and CBP's site or app for US-bound waits just before you leave, and remember neither counts the approach roads. Early mornings are usually quieter; holiday long weekends are the busiest.
Which bridge is best from Niagara Falls to Buffalo?
For downtown Buffalo or the airport, the Peace Bridge at Fort Erie is often the most direct. The Rainbow Bridge suits the US Falls and the State Park, and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge suits Lewiston and Youngstown. Our chauffeur compares the live waits before choosing.
Can our chauffeur use the NEXUS lane?
Only if every person in the vehicle, including the chauffeur, is a NEXUS member carrying their card. If anyone in the group is not a member, the car uses the regular lanes. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is NEXUS-only, so the same rule applies there.
Do I need an eTA to enter Canada by car?
No. Visa-exempt visitors arriving by car, bus, train or boat do not need an eTA; it is required for flights to Canada. You still need a valid passport, and visa-required nationals need a visitor visa even by land.
Are there tolls on the Niagara bridges?
Yes, but only entering Canada. As of 2026, a passenger car pays US$6.00 or CA$8.50 at the three Niagara Falls Bridge Commission bridges, and US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card at the Peace Bridge. No toll is charged going into the United States.
