The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge arches over the Niagara Gorge at the foot of the escarpment, about 12 km downriver from the Horseshoe Falls. Canadians tend to call it the Queenston bridge and Americans the Lewiston bridge; it is the same crossing. This guide covers where to read the Lewiston bridge wait time, how its truck and NEXUS lanes work, what the toll is in 2026, and when NiagaraFallsLimo.net chooses it for a chauffeured trip.

What is the Lewiston bridge wait time today?

The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge wait time is posted live, not fixed: the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, CBSA (into Canada) and CBP (into the US) publish it. The bridge is about 12 km (8 mi) from the Falls, usually 15 minutes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeurs cross it with you; book a fixed fare online.

Search engines sometimes show an old snapshot. Open the source itself, look at the time stamp, and check the direction you are travelling. A two-minute reading into Canada says nothing about the US-bound queue at the same moment.

Where the bridge is and what it connects

On the Canadian side the bridge lands at Queenston, a village within the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The CBSA office sits on the Niagara Parkway at Highway 405, which runs a short distance west to the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW). On the American side it lands at the Town and Village of Lewiston, with connections to the I-190 and New York Route 104.

The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC) operates this bridge along with the Rainbow and Whirlpool Rapids bridges. According to the NFBC's "Which bridge do I take?" page, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge allows:

  • autos, RVs, buses and limousines;
  • vehicles or trailers in tow;
  • commercial trucks, the only NFBC bridge that takes them;
  • bicycles in the roadway with traffic.

Pedestrians are not permitted. The CBSA directory lists the Canadian port, "Queenston Lewiston Bridge (Travellers and Commercial)", as open 24 hours, seven days a week, and CBP's data lists the Lewiston side as 24 hours too.

Reading the Lewiston-Queenston wait time

There are three official places to look, and each tells you something slightly different.

Stunning aerial view of snow-covered landscape along the Niagara River in winter, captured in black and white.
Stunning aerial view of snow-covered landscape along the Niagara River in winter, captured in black and white.
  1. NFBC traffic conditions. The commission's site shows delays for both directions at its bridges. It is the only screen that puts Lewiston-Queenston beside the Rainbow Bridge for both directions at once.
  2. CBSA, into Canada. The CBSA border wait times table lists "Queenston Lewiston Bridge (Travellers and Commercial)" with separate traveller and commercial estimates and an update time. CBSA notes that the figure does not include delays on the roads leading to the crossing.
  3. CBP, into the United States. CBP's Border Wait Times site lists "Buffalo/Niagara Falls - Lewiston Bridge" by lane type, General, NEXUS and Ready Lane for cars, and General for commercial. CBP's feed says each location updates hourly and measures the time to reach the primary inspection booth.

Because the CBP figure can be up to an hour old, treat it as a guide. Lines can build or clear in less time than that.

Truck traffic and why it changes the picture

Freight is the big difference between this bridge and the Rainbow Bridge. NFBC counts four truck inspection lanes heading into the United States and five into Canada, alongside six car lanes US-bound and ten car lanes Canada-bound, with designated tour-bus lanes and overhead gantries that mark each lane.

Trucks and cars are separated at the plaza, so a long freight line does not automatically mean a long car wait. The shared stretch is the approach: Highway 405 on the Canadian side and the ramps from the I-190 on the American side. When CBSA or CBP show a modest car wait but the approach is slow, the approach is usually the reason. A chauffeur who drives these ramps daily will tell you which part of the delay is the booth and which is the road.

NEXUS lanes at Lewiston-Queenston

NEXUS lanes here keep set hours, per NFBC:

  • Into the United States: one NEXUS lane, Monday to Friday, 6:00 to 8:00 a.m., excluding holidays.
  • Into Canada: one NEXUS lane, daily, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Outside those hours, NEXUS members use the general lanes like everyone else. The lane also has a firm membership rule. CBSA's guidance on how to use NEXUS says everyone accompanying you must be a member, whatever their age, and the driver is responsible for confirming it. A chauffeured car qualifies only if the chauffeur and every passenger hold cards. Read more in our NEXUS and trusted traveller guide.

The toll, and which direction pays

NFBC tolls are paid one way, into Canada, and the Lewiston-Queenston toll booth is on the Canadian side. Since May 1, 2025 a passenger car pays US$6.00 or CA$8.50, as listed on the NFBC toll page. E-ZPass, the commission's ExpressPass and NEXUS toll accounts are accepted at the same car rate, and the commission notes it no longer accepts pennies after August 1, 2026.

On a chauffeured booking you will not handle the toll at all; it is part of the trip.

Why we often choose the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge

This crossing makes geographic sense for a cluster of trips we drive every week:

  • Niagara-on-the-Lake to the US side. From the old town to the bridge is about 13 km (8 mi), usually 15–20 minutes, without passing through the Falls tourist district. If you are staying at one of the Niagara-on-the-Lake inns and flying out of BUF, this is the obvious route.
  • Wine country days that include New York. A Niagara wine tour by limo can start in Ontario and finish with dinner in Lewiston, all in one vehicle.
  • Lewiston itself. The village waterfront has a Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours departure on the boardwalk.
  • Old Fort Niagara at Youngstown. It is north of Lewiston on the American side; see our Old Fort Niagara guide.
  • Toronto Pearson to Buffalo. From Pearson the QEW and Highway 405 lead straight here, about 120 km (75 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 40 off-peak before the border.
  • The I-190 to Buffalo and BUF. From the bridge to Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about 44 km (27 mi), usually 40 minutes.

When the Rainbow Bridge in the tourist district is heavy, this is usually the first alternative we check; when trips start near Clifton Hill, the Rainbow Bridge is closer.

Distances and drive times to the bridge

All approximate, computed by route planner, excluding the border queue:

  • Table Rock / Horseshoe Falls to the bridge: about 12 km (8 mi), usually 15 minutes; allow 25 minutes or more on summer weekends along the Parkway.
  • Niagara-on-the-Lake old town to the bridge: about 13 km (8 mi), usually 15–20 minutes.
  • Downtown St. Catharines to the bridge: about 19 km (12 mi), usually 20 minutes.
  • Toronto Pearson (YYZ) to the bridge: about 120 km (75 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 40 off-peak; allow 2 h+ on a summer Friday.
  • Bridge to BUF: about 44 km (27 mi), usually 40 minutes.
  • Bridge to downtown Lewiston: a few minutes.

When waits rise

We do not publish average waits; no official source does, and a made-up figure helps nobody. What official sources do say is useful. CBSA notes that waits vary with major events and holiday visitors, and its 2026 travel advice named holiday long weekends as the busiest periods and early mornings as the best time to avoid queues. Sports and concert nights in Buffalo, and summer Sundays when visitors head home, are worth planning around. The fix is simple: check the live reading before leaving, and if a flight is involved, choose a pickup time that leaves room. Our border wait times guide explains how we compare the bridges.

How a crossing with NiagaraFallsLimo.net works

Your chauffeur drives you to the plaza, joins the lane that fits the vehicle, and waits with you through inspection. Each passenger presents their own document. Officers may ask anyone in the vehicle about the purpose and length of the trip, so answer for yourself. When you are cleared, the trip continues to the address you booked.

Every passenger needs valid documents of their own. Check what you need to enter Canada and what you need to enter the US. We never promise how long a crossing will take; we promise a licensed, commercially insured chauffeur and a fixed fare. Our cross-border car service page has the rest.

When something else is the better choice

If you live in Lewiston or Niagara-on-the-Lake and have your own car, drive; the bridge is close and the toll modest. If you are travelling between Toronto and New York City by rail and do not need to stop, the Amtrak Maple Leaf, which stops at Niagara Falls on both sides, is a reasonable choice. For a single short hop inside Ontario, a taxi is fine.

A chauffeur makes more sense once a border, a schedule and other people are involved: a winery afternoon with a flight at BUF that evening, grandparents and a toddler with a car seat, a wedding party staying at two hotels in two countries, or a late arrival when nobody wants to negotiate at a rank. See our comparison of chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge open 24 hours?

Yes. The CBSA office directory lists the Queenston Lewiston Bridge for travellers and commercial traffic as open 24 hours, seven days a week, and CBP's wait-time data lists the Lewiston side as open around the clock. NEXUS lanes keep shorter hours in each direction.

What is the toll on the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge?

Since May 1, 2025 the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission charges a passenger car US$6.00 or CA$8.50. The toll is paid only when entering Canada, at a booth on the Canadian side. E-ZPass and NEXUS toll accounts are accepted. On a chauffeured booking the toll is part of the trip.

Is Queenston bridge the same as the Lewiston bridge?

Yes. Canadians often call it the Queenston bridge, Americans the Lewiston bridge, and the commission names it the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. CBSA lists it as "Queenston Lewiston Bridge" and CBP as "Buffalo/Niagara Falls - Lewiston Bridge".

Does the Lewiston bridge have a NEXUS lane?

Yes, with set hours. Into Canada there is one NEXUS lane daily from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; into the United States one lane runs Monday to Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m., except holidays. Everyone in the vehicle, including the driver, must be a NEXUS member.

Can trucks use the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge?

Yes. It is the only Niagara Falls Bridge Commission bridge that accepts commercial trucks, which is why its plazas have dedicated truck lanes. Cars and trucks are separated at inspection, though both use the approach roads.

Is Lewiston-Queenston faster than the Rainbow Bridge?

It can be, especially for trips that start in Niagara-on-the-Lake or end on the I-190. On other days the Rainbow Bridge is quicker. Compare the live readings for your direction, then add the drive to each plaza from your starting point.

Can I walk across the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge?

No. Pedestrians are not permitted on this bridge. The Rainbow Bridge is the only Niagara Falls Bridge Commission crossing with a pedestrian walkway. A chauffeured car, a taxi or your own vehicle are the ways across here.

How do I get from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Buffalo Airport?

The most direct route crosses at Lewiston-Queenston and follows the I-190 to BUF: roughly 57 km (35 mi) in total, about 55–60 minutes plus border time. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives it door to door; see the border crossing hub for documents and timing.
