A week among the Finger Lakes has a way of making people curious about the next wine region over. From Ithaca, at the southern tip of Cayuga Lake, the Niagara Peninsula is a single long drive away, and the two regions share more than geography suggests: both grow grapes on slopes moderated by deep water, and both are easiest to enjoy when somebody else is driving. The difference is the border. Niagara-on-the-Lake is in Ontario, and getting there means crossing the Niagara River at Lewiston.
This guide covers the distance from Ithaca to Niagara Falls and on to Niagara-on-the-Lake, the route and border crossing, what changes when bottles travel between the two countries, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net can carry the trip, either as a one-way transfer from Ithaca or as a pickup at the bridge.
How far is it from Ithaca to Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Ithaca to Niagara Falls is about 271 km (168 mi), usually 3 h 40 – 4 h by road; Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 284 km (177 mi), roughly 4 h, crossing at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives the whole way or meets you at the bridge. Book online; every passenger needs border documents.
Route-planner figures, without traffic or border inspection time:
| From | To | Distance | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ithaca, NY | Lewiston-Queenston Bridge (US side) | about 271 km (168 mi) | 3 h 40 – 4 h |
| Ithaca, NY | Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls ON | about 271 km (168 mi) | 3 h 45 – 4 h 15 |
| Ithaca, NY | Niagara-on-the-Lake Old Town | about 284 km (177 mi) | 3 h 50 – 4 h 15 |
| Geneva, NY (north end of Seneca Lake) | Niagara-on-the-Lake Old Town | about 213 km (132 mi) | 2 h 55 – 3 h 15 |
| Lewiston-Queenston Bridge | Niagara-on-the-Lake Old Town | about 13 km (8 mi) | 15–20 min |
Add the border inspection on top. Nobody can promise how long it takes; the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) publishes live estimates for traffic entering Canada, and our border wait times page explains how to read them.
The Ithaca to Niagara Falls route, north from Cayuga Lake
The fastest road route from Ithaca runs north on NY 96 and NY 89 along Cayuga Lake to the New York State Thruway (I-90) near the top of the lakes, west past Rochester, then onto I-290 and I-190 around Buffalo to Lewiston. The Thruway is fully cashless: cameras read plates at every toll point, and drivers without E-ZPass are billed by mail afterwards (NYS Thruway Tolls by Mail).
At the end of I-190 sits the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, run by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission. It is the natural crossing for wine country, because it lands you on the Canadian side at Queenston, a short drive from Old Town. The commission lists ten car lanes into Canada and a NEXUS lane open daily from 8 am to 8 pm (Niagara Falls Bridge Commission). Tolls are collected only in the Canada-bound direction.
Three ways to join the two regions
1. One-way chauffeured transfer from Ithaca. The car collects you at your Ithaca hotel or rental, drives the full four hours, crosses the bridge with you and drops you at your Niagara-on-the-Lake inn. It suits people who have already returned a rental car, groups with luggage, and anyone who wants to spend the drive reading or napping. Long-distance trips like this are part of our city-to-city rides.
2. Drive yourself to Lewiston, then hand over the wheel. Some travellers keep their US rental, drive to Lewiston, New York, and park, then have a chauffeur take them across for a day of tastings and back to the car in the evening. The bridge-to-Old-Town leg is only about 13 km. Our journal post on Lewiston to Niagara-on-the-Lake, the short border hop covers this pattern.
3. Stay in Ontario for two nights. The comfortable option: arrive in the afternoon, rest, then spend a full day touring wineries with a driver before moving on to the Falls or a flight from Buffalo or Toronto. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake inns page lists where cars collect guests.
A same-day return from Ithaca, eight hours of road around a few tastings, is possible but rarely enjoyable. If time is that short, choose option 2.
Documents for the crossing
The chauffeur crosses the bridge with you, but every passenger must carry their own valid documents.
- US citizens entering Canada: CBSA recommends a valid passport; a passport card, an enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card are also commonly used at land crossings. Children should carry proof of citizenship, and a consent letter is recommended for minors travelling without both parents.
- Returning to the US: US citizens may use a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or a trusted-traveller card such as NEXUS.
- Other nationalities: visa or ESTA rules apply in each direction. Visitors in the US on the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA to re-enter by land.
Details are on our documents for entering Canada page and the cross-border car service page.
Carrying wine between New York and Ontario
This is the part wine travellers most often get wrong.
- Into Canada: CBSA's personal exemption, after 48 hours or more outside Canada, allows one of: 1.5 L of wine (about two 750 mL bottles), 1.14 L of spirits, or 8.5 L of beer, for travellers of legal drinking age, which is 19 in Ontario. Visitors bringing Finger Lakes bottles as gifts should declare them (CBSA: what you can bring).
- Back into the US: returning US residents away 48 hours or more have an $800 exemption that may include one litre of alcohol for travellers 21 and over; after less than 48 hours the exemption drops to $200, including 150 mL of alcohol. Beyond those amounts, duty applies.
- In the vehicle: Ontario law allows liquor in a vehicle only sealed or packed away, and Niagara Region's by-law forbids drinking in licensed vehicles. New York's open-container rule is similar on public highways. Bottles ride sealed in the trunk on both sides of the river.
Our duty-free and declarations page sets out the limits in more detail.

Finger Lakes to Niagara: what changes in the glass
The Finger Lakes trails are well organised. The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail describes itself as America's first wine trail, active for more than 40 years (Cayuga Lake Wine Trail), and Finger Lakes Wine Country lists the Seneca Lake Wine Trail, with more than two dozen wineries, and the six-member Keuka Lake Wine Trail (Finger Lakes Wine Country).
Across the border, the Niagara Peninsula is Canada's largest planted viticultural area, about 13,600 acres, divided by VQA Ontario into ten sub-appellations from the Niagara Lakeshore to the Beamsville Bench. Two things will feel new to a Finger Lakes visitor:
- Icewine is a legal category, not a style. Under VQA rules, grapes must freeze naturally on the vine and be picked at minus 8°C or colder, with juice reaching at least 35 Brix. Niagara-on-the-Lake tasting rooms make Icewine a centrepiece.
- Scale varies wildly. Large estates along Niagara Stone Road sit near small family wineries a few kilometres away. A good day mixes both; our Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries page lists the main stops.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
Over 280 km and an international border, the options narrow quickly.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage / group | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Driving yourself (US rental) | about 4 h plus border | Fuel, Thruway tolls, rental cross-border terms | Your car | Travellers who want flexibility and will not taste |
| Rideshare app | Long-distance cross-border trips rarely available | Surge pricing; driver may not cross | Usually 4 riders | Short local trips on each side |
| Taxi | Uncommon for a 4-hour cross-border run | Metered | Usually 4 riders | Not practical for this route |
| Bus / rail via Buffalo | Several transfers, then a local ride | Published fares | Standard luggage | Solo travellers with time to spare |
| Private chauffeur | Door to door, crossing included | Fixed fare via booker | Sedan to Sprinter | Couples, groups, luggage, winery days |
The verdict: if you already have a rental car and nobody in the group plans to taste, driving yourself is the obvious choice; check that your rental agreement allows Canada. Rideshare and taxis are not built for a four-hour international trip. A pre-booked chauffeur makes most sense for the cross-border leg itself, for winery days once you arrive, and for travellers who have finished with their rental. Our journal guide to a wine tour from Buffalo shows the shorter version of the same crossing.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Enter both ends of the trip. In the booker, put your Ithaca address (or a Lewiston meeting point) as pickup and your Niagara-on-the-Lake inn or a winery as drop-off, with date and time.
- Pick the vehicle and see the fixed fare. An Executive Black SUV carries up to six passengers with six bags, which suits a group with a week of luggage and a case of wine; a Standard Sedan carries up to three with two large bags.
- Add passengers and pay. Include everyone's name and passenger count, any child seats, then pay securely. Email confirmation follows, and the chauffeur handles the bridge with you.
Cancellations count from the scheduled pickup: free with more than 72 hours' notice, 10% within 72 hours, 50% within 48 hours and 100% within 24 hours or for a no-show.
Who this suits
Individuals finishing a Cornell visit or a conference in Ithaca can roll straight into a Niagara weekend without arranging a one-way rental. Couples on a two-region wine holiday get the long drive done in comfort, with the same car available for a tasting day after; our private wine tour booking guide explains that second step. Families visiting a student at an Ithaca college can turn the trip home into a stop at the Falls. Groups of four to twelve fit an SUV or Executive Sprinter, which keeps everyone, and everyone's bottles, in one vehicle across the border.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Ithaca to Niagara Falls?
About 271 km (168 mi), usually 3 h 40 to 4 h by road to the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge or the Canadian Falls, not counting the border inspection. The common route follows NY 96 and NY 89 to the Thruway, then I-290 and I-190 past Buffalo. Summer weekends and holidays can add time.
Which bridge should I use to reach Niagara-on-the-Lake from the Finger Lakes?
The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge at the end of I-190. It lands you at Queenston, about 13 km (8 mi) or 15 to 20 minutes from Niagara-on-the-Lake Old Town. The Rainbow Bridge is better if you are heading to the Falls first.
Do I need a passport to go from Ithaca to Niagara-on-the-Lake?
CBSA recommends that US citizens carry a valid passport. A passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card are other accepted documents at land crossings for returning to the US. Non-US citizens need the right visa or ESTA status. Each passenger in the car must carry their own documents.
Can I bring Finger Lakes wine into Canada?
Yes, within limits. After 48 hours or more outside Canada, adults of legal drinking age can bring one of 1.5 L of wine, 1.14 L of spirits or 8.5 L of beer under CBSA's personal exemption. Declare all alcohol at the border; amounts above the exemption are charged duty and taxes.
Can a chauffeur pick us up in Ithaca and take us to Niagara-on-the-Lake?
Yes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs long-distance city-to-city rides, including cross-border trips, and the chauffeur crosses the bridge with you. Enter your Ithaca pickup and Niagara-on-the-Lake drop-off in the booker to see the fixed fare for your vehicle before you pay.
Is Ithaca to Niagara Falls a reasonable day trip?
It is about eight hours of round-trip driving before you see anything, so most people find it too long. A better plan is to drive yourself to Lewiston, have a chauffeur take you across for tastings and the Falls, and return to your car in the evening, or to stay one or two nights in Ontario.
