Hotels · attractions · airports · bridges

Door-to-door chauffeured cars between every Fallsview and Clifton Hill hotel, the wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake, all four Niagara border bridges, Toronto Pearson, Buffalo Niagara, Hamilton and Billy Bishop airports, and the attractions on both sides of the river.

Every season, visitors on the Canadian side look down from Queen Victoria Park, see a blue-poncho boat nosing into the mist, and ask the same question: how do we get on that one? The answer is that the Maid of the Mist boards at Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, New York, so it is a short trip across an international border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives guests from Fallsview and Clifton Hill hotels across the Rainbow Bridge to the boat and back, and from Buffalo Niagara International to the dock for travellers starting on the US side.

Where does the Maid of the Mist leave from, and how do I get there from Canada?

The Maid of the Mist departs from Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, 1 Prospect Street, Niagara Falls, New York. From Table Rock on the Canadian side it is about 3.5 km (2 mi), usually 8–10 minutes of driving plus the US border queue at the Rainbow Bridge. NiagaraFallsLimo.net crosses with you, and the booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.

From a Clifton Hill hotel the drive is even shorter, about 2 km (1 mi). The time that matters is the queue at US inspection, which nobody can predict; check the live figures on the CBP Border Wait Times site before you leave, and allow generously on summer weekends and US holidays. Coming from the US side, Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) is about 39 km (24 mi), usually 40 minutes, and Niagara Falls International (IAG) is about 13 km (8 mi), roughly 18 minutes, with no border at all.

The boat in brief

According to Maid of the Mist, checked in October 2026:

  • Season: 24 April to 8 November 2026. The boat is closed from 9 November until opening day 2027, and the spring start depends on ice coming down from Lake Erie.
  • Hours: they change through the season; for example, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily from 22 June to 9 August.
  • Tickets (as of 2026): adult US$30.25, child (6–12) US$19.75, children 5 and under free with a paid adult. The ticket includes the elevator down to the landing.
  • Boarding: first come, first served.
  • The ride: guests receive a souvenir poncho at the Observation Tower and board a double-deck, all-electric catamaran that passes the base of the American Falls and enters the basin of the Horseshoe Falls.
  • History: the operator says it has carried visitors since 1846.

Maid of the Mist or Niagara City Cruises?

These are the two boats you see in the gorge. The Maid of the Mist sails from the American shore; Niagara City Cruises is the official boat tour of Niagara Parks and sails from the Canadian shore at 5920 Niagara Parkway. Both head into the Horseshoe Falls basin. The practical difference for a visitor staying in Ontario is the border: Niagara City Cruises needs no passport, the Maid of the Mist does.

Some guests like to ride both on the same day for the different angles and the different crowds, and an hourly booking makes that easy. Others choose one boat and spend the rest of the time elsewhere. There is no wrong answer; our Canadian side vs American side guide sets out what each side does best.

Crossing the Rainbow Bridge with your chauffeur

The Rainbow Bridge is the nearest crossing to the boat and lands you a short drive from Prospect Point. Points worth knowing, from the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission:

  • Cars, buses and limousines may use it; commercial trucks may not.
  • It has 16 car inspection lanes into the US and 15 into Canada.
  • From Canada it is reached from the QEW by way of Highway 420.
  • Tolls are charged only when entering Canada. Going to the boat costs no toll; coming back, a car pays US$6.00 or CA$8.50 and a limousine is charged per axle (as of 2026), as listed on the NFBC toll page.

Your chauffeur handles the toll and the lane choice. At inspection, each passenger answers for themselves and shows their own documents to the officer. We never promise how long a crossing takes, because only the inspection agencies control that. If everyone in the vehicle holds a NEXUS card, faster options exist; see NEXUS and trusted travellers.

Documents for each passenger

Every person in the car must carry their own valid papers. A summary, based on US Customs and Border Protection rules; full details on our documents for entering the USA page:

  • Canadian and US citizens: a passport, a passport card (US citizens), an enhanced driver's licence, or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. Maid of the Mist's own border crossing page repeats this.
  • Children under 16 who are US or Canadian citizens may use a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. If a child is travelling without both parents, carry a consent letter; see crossing with children.
  • Visitors from abroad on the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA before reaching a US land border (the ESTA fee is US$40.62 from 16 October 2026) and an I-94, which carries a US$30 fee at land borders. CBP encourages applying for the I-94 in advance through the CBP Link app or the I-94 website. Read our guide for international visitors first.
  • Everyone, both directions: cannabis in any form is illegal to carry across this border.

On the way back, you re-enter Canada through the Canada Border Services Agency; our documents for entering Canada page covers it.

Where the car stops at Prospect Point

The boat is reached through the Observation Tower, whose elevators take you down to the boarding area. The State Park's main car lot, Lot 1 at 333 Prospect Street, takes cars only and charges a daily fee (US$10, or US$15 on summer weekends, as of 2026). With a chauffeur you skip the lot: we drop you as close to the tower as traffic rules allow and collect you at the same place when you message.

In October 2026 the far end of the Observation Tower and the Crow's Nest were closed for construction, while the rest of the tower stayed open. The deck and elevator are open to visitors without a boat ticket, which is useful if one member of your party would rather watch than ride.

How long to allow

The cruise itself is short, but the whole visit is not. Allow:

  • Border out: a few minutes on a quiet weekday morning, much longer on a July Saturday.
  • Tower, poncho and queue: boarding is first come, first served, so peak afternoons mean a wait.
  • The cruise and the return: the boat ride, the elevator back up and the short walk to the car.
  • Border back into Canada: again unpredictable.

For a boat-only trip, block out half a day. Pair it with Cave of the Winds on Goat Island and a walk through Niagara Falls State Park, and you have a full American-side day.

The honest picture: if you are young, fit, travelling light and staying on Clifton Hill, walking over the Rainbow Bridge is a fine, memorable way to reach the Maid of the Mist, and we would not talk you out of it. Rideshare is the weak link, because the ride you order in Canada may not be allowed to cross; Niagara Falls International Airport even warns that rideshare services may not cross the border. A pre-booked chauffeur wins for families with car seats, older travellers, groups who want one vehicle, wet guests who do not want a long walk back, and anyone combining both boats or both sides in a day. The chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes into detail.

Both boats in one day: a sample plan

  1. Morning, Canada: Niagara City Cruises from the Canadian dock, then the Table Rock lookout.
  2. Late morning: your chauffeur drives you across the Rainbow Bridge.
  3. Midday, New York: Maid of the Mist from Prospect Point, lunch near the park, then Goat Island.
  4. Afternoon: back to Canada for Journey Behind the Falls, or straight to your hotel to dry off.

Booked "By the hour", the car stays with you all day. Our Niagara Falls private tour page explains how longer days work.

Who this trip suits

  • Individuals: a solo traveller can cross, ride and be back by lunch without worrying whether a ride home will cross the bridge.
  • Couples: the two-boats day is a favourite; see Niagara for couples.
  • Families: children 5 and under ride free with a paid adult, and car seats are ready in the booker.
  • Groups: an Executive Sprinter seats up to 12 and a Stretch SUV Limousine up to 16; every passenger still clears the border individually, so allow extra time.

Book the Maid of the Mist trip in 3 steps

  1. Pickup and drop-off. Enter your hotel, for example one of the Fallsview hotels, and "Maid of the Mist, 1 Prospect Street, Niagara Falls, NY" as drop-off, with date and time; or start from Buffalo Niagara International with your flight number.
  2. Vehicle. Choose a class; each shows its fixed fare. Add a return trip or choose "By the hour" for a full day.
  3. Details and payment. Add passengers, child seats and extras, pay securely, and watch for the email confirmation. Have every passenger's documents ready the night before.

Staying on the US side instead? Our Niagara Falls NY hotels page covers pickups there, and the cross-border car service page explains how we handle the bridges.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Maid of the Mist in Canada or the USA?

The Maid of the Mist boards in the USA, at Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, New York. The boat you can board from the Canadian shore is Niagara City Cruises. Both sail into the Horseshoe Falls basin; only the Maid of the Mist requires crossing the border from Ontario.

Do I need a passport for the Maid of the Mist?

If you are coming from Canada, yes, or another accepted document: Canadian and US citizens may use an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card, and US citizens may also use a passport card. Children under 16 can use a birth certificate. Visitors from abroad generally need a passport plus an ESTA or visa.

When does the Maid of the Mist close for the season?

In 2026 the season runs from 24 April to 8 November, and the boat stays closed from 9 November until opening day 2027. The spring opening depends on ice on Lake Erie and the upper river, so the first sailing date is confirmed each spring.

How much are Maid of the Mist tickets?

As of 2026, the operator lists US$30.25 for adults and US$19.75 for children aged 6 to 12, with children 5 and under free alongside a paid adult. The price includes the elevator to the landing. Our chauffeur fare is separate and shown in the booker before you pay.

Can I take an Uber from Niagara Falls, Canada to the Maid of the Mist?

It is unreliable. A rideshare driver may not be able to cross the border, and Niagara Falls International Airport warns that rideshare services may not cross. If you want a ride that definitely goes over the Rainbow Bridge and comes back, pre-book a chauffeur who crosses with you.

Can you walk to the Maid of the Mist from Canada?

Yes. The Rainbow Bridge has a pedestrian walkway, and the pedestrian toll of US$1.00 or CA$1.25 (as of 2026) is collected on the Canadian side for walking into the US. Each walker clears US inspection with their own documents. It suits fit, lightly packed visitors staying near Clifton Hill.

How long does the border take at the Rainbow Bridge?

No one can promise a time. Waits change hour by hour, so check CBP's Border Wait Times site before leaving and the CBSA page before returning. Early mornings tend to be calmer, while summer weekends and holidays are busiest.

Should I book Maid of the Mist tickets in advance?

The operator states that boarding is first come, first served, so arrive with time to spare on busy summer afternoons. What you can book in advance is the ride: reserve the car, and your chauffeur will be ready at the hotel at the time you choose.
