Children who have stood in the spray on the Hurricane Deck tend to talk about it for years. It is loud, it is wet, and the Bridal Veil Falls is right there. The catch for families staying in Ontario is that Cave of the Winds sits on Goat Island in New York State, so it means a passport morning. NiagaraFallsLimo.net builds that morning into Canadian-side holidays all the time, and the plan below is the one we give parents.
How do you visit Cave of the Winds from the Canadian side?
Cave of the Winds is at 10 Goat Island Loop Road in Niagara Falls State Park, New York. From Clifton Hill it is about 3 km over the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 7–10 minutes of driving plus the US inspection. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives your family across, waits, and brings you back; the booker shows a fixed fare first.
The drive is short. The planning that matters is documents for every family member, timed tickets bought on site, and shoes that can get soaked.
What Cave of the Winds actually is
Niagara Falls State Park describes Cave of the Winds as a timed-ticket attraction whose main feature is the Hurricane Deck, which takes visitors closer to the falls. Tourism listings describe an elevator dropping roughly 175 ft (53 m) into the gorge, followed by wooden walkways at the base of the Bridal Veil Falls, the smallest of Niagara's three falls, which sits between Luna Island and Goat Island.
The experience changes with the seasons. The park sells tickets year-round and, as of 2026, lists lower prices from October 19, 2026 to March 31, 2027 (adults US$14, youth US$10). Ask at the ticket window what is open on the day you visit, especially in winter. Our Cave of the Winds page covers drop-off on Goat Island, and our Niagara Falls State Park page maps the rest of the park around it.
Tickets, shoes and what to carry
A few practical facts trip up visiting families.
- Tickets are sold on site only. The park sells them at Cave of the Winds on Goat Island and at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center, not online. Buy your time slot as soon as you arrive in the park, then fill the wait with Luna Island or Terrapin Point.
- No more free sandals. The park no longer hands them out. Bring footwear you do not mind getting wet, and pack dry socks for the ride back.
- Closures happen. In 2026 the attraction closed on October 19 and 20 for maintenance, and it closes on US Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Check the official page the evening before.
- Accessibility. The official page does not set out accessibility details; the park office at (716) 278-1794 answers those questions.

Documents for the US side, child by child
Crossing into New York for two hours still means a full inspection. Every person in the car carries their own document.
- Adults who are US or Canadian citizens may use a passport, an enhanced driver's licence or a trusted traveller card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST), as set out by CBP's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page.
- Children under 16 who are US or Canadian citizens need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship.
- A child with only one parent should carry a signed consent letter from the other; Global Affairs Canada recommends one for any child under 19 travelling without both parents, and travel.gc.ca explains what it should contain.
- International visitors need a passport and, for Visa Waiver nationals, an approved ESTA before reaching the land border. CBP charges a US$30 land-border I-94 fee as of 2026.
Our pages on documents for entering the USA and crossing with children go into each case. Coming back into Canada, CBSA asks that a minor's identification be carried, and copies of custody papers where relevant.
A both-sides family day built around the Hurricane Deck
This is the order we suggest in summer, when the Maid of the Mist is running (in 2026 its season ran April 24 to November 8).
- Early pickup at your Canadian hotel. Fallsview hotels are about 4 km from Goat Island; Clifton Hill hotels about 3 km.
- Rainbow Bridge into the US. One inspection; the chauffeur handles the vehicle questions.
- Goat Island first. Buy Cave of the Winds tickets straight away, then walk to Luna Island to see the Bridal Veil Falls from above while you wait.
- Hurricane Deck. Get wet. Change socks in the car.
- Prospect Point and the Maid of the Mist. Short hop by car to the Observation Tower and the boat. See our Maid of the Mist page.
- Back to Canada for lunch. Rainbow Bridge again, then an afternoon at Table Rock.
- Optional evening. Journey Behind the Falls for the tunnels behind the Horseshoe Falls.
Families who want both boats in one day should read our journal post on combining Maid of the Mist with the Canadian boat. For a slower Goat Island day on foot, see Goat Island and Three Sisters Islands with car support.
Cave of the Winds or Journey Behind the Falls?
Some families only have time for one.
| Cave of the Winds (US) | Journey Behind the Falls (Canada) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Goat Island, below the Bridal Veil Falls | Table Rock Centre, behind the Horseshoe Falls |
| Border crossing | Yes, from Ontario | No |
| What you do | Elevator down, walkways, Hurricane Deck in the spray | Descend 125 ft to tunnels, portals and an observation deck |
| Tickets | Timed; on site only | Through Niagara Parks |
| Wetness | Very wet; bring shoes you can soak | Damp near the portals and deck |
| Season | Year-round, lower off-season prices as of 2026 | Year-round |
If you are staying in Ontario with young children and limited time, Journey Behind the Falls is simpler. If your children want the full soaking and you are happy to cross, Cave of the Winds is the more dramatic hour. Our journal post on Journey Behind the Falls timing and Table Rock drop-off covers the Canadian alternative in detail.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time from Clifton Hill | Cost note | Wet clothes and bags | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | About 7–10 min plus border, each way | Fixed fare via booker | Boot for dry clothes; child seats | Families making a both-sides day |
| Rideshare | Same drive, if the driver crosses | App pricing; surge possible | No child seats | Adults who confirmed the crossing |
| Taxi | Same drive, if the cab crosses | Metered | Ask first | One-way trips |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | A long walk to Goat Island, plus inspection | Pedestrian toll as of 2026 | Carry everything | Fit adults with a free morning |
| Driving yourself | Short drive plus border and State Park parking | Fuel, toll, parking | Your own car | Families with their own car seats |
Our verdict: fit adults without children can walk across the Rainbow Bridge and on to Goat Island and enjoy every step. Rideshare is the uncertain choice because not every driver will cross, and none will bring a booster seat. Families with young children, grandparents along, or plans for both boats and both sides in one day are better served by a car that crosses with them and waits with dry clothes in the boot. Our cross-border car service page explains how the chauffeur handles the bridge.
A wet-morning packing list
Parents who have done this before pack a small bag that stays in the car, not on their backs.
- A full change of clothes for each child, including socks and underwear.
- A towel per person and a plastic bag for the soaked clothes.
- Water shoes or old trainers for the deck, and dry shoes for the rest of the day.
- Passports, birth certificates and any consent letter in one zipped pouch held by one adult.
- Snacks for the queue, since timed slots can mean a wait.
The chauffeur keeps the boot clear for that bag, so you can change in comfort before the second half of the day.
Coming back over the Rainbow Bridge
The return to Ontario is a CBSA inspection at the Canadian end of the Rainbow Bridge. Tolls are collected only in this direction; the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists them, and they are part of the trip rather than something you pay at the window. Expect the officer to ask how long you were in the US and what, if anything, you bought. Canadians returning the same day have no personal exemption, so mention the souvenir T-shirts.
Reserve the car for Goat Island and back
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Pick the mode. Choose "By the hour" so the car stays with you on Goat Island and at Prospect Point, or book a return trip with a set pickup time.
- Pick the vehicle. A Standard SUV seats up to six with six bags; an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 for a larger family. The fixed fare shows for each class.
- Add seats and pay. Child, toddler or booster seats, then secure payment and an email confirmation.
Check the fixed fare for a both-sides day
Who this add-on suits
Families with school-age children get the most from the Hurricane Deck. Couples often pair it with a quiet lunch at Terrapin Point. Groups of friends who want a soaked photo together can travel in one Sprinter. Individuals on a short trip can fit Goat Island into a two-hour US-side loop. More on travelling with children is on our families page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Cave of the Winds in Canada or the USA?
Cave of the Winds is in the USA, on Goat Island in Niagara Falls State Park, New York, at 10 Goat Island Loop Road. From the Canadian side you cross the Rainbow Bridge and pass a US inspection, so every member of your family needs a valid document.
Can you buy Cave of the Winds tickets online?
No. Niagara Falls State Park says tickets are sold only on site, at Cave of the Winds on Goat Island and at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Welcome Center. Tickets are timed, so buy your slot as soon as you arrive and explore Goat Island while you wait.
Do they still give out sandals at Cave of the Winds?
No. The park no longer hands out Cave of the Winds sandals. Bring footwear you do not mind getting completely wet, and leave dry socks and shoes in the car for afterwards. Expect to get soaked on the Hurricane Deck.
Is Cave of the Winds open in winter?
The park lists year-round hours, with last tickets at 4 p.m. from late October through March in the 2026–27 schedule and lower off-season prices. It closes on US Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Ask on site what is open, since conditions change in winter.
What documents do children need for Cave of the Winds from Canada?
US and Canadian citizen children under 16 need a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship to enter the US by land. If both parents are not travelling, carry a signed consent letter from the absent parent. International children need their own passport.
How far is Cave of the Winds from Clifton Hill?
About 3 km by road via the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 7–10 minutes of driving plus the US inspection. From the Fallsview hotels it is about 4 km. The time at the border varies, so plan a margin for both crossings.
Is Cave of the Winds better than Journey Behind the Falls?
They are different. Cave of the Winds takes you into the spray of the Bridal Veil Falls on the US side; Journey Behind the Falls takes you into tunnels behind the Horseshoe Falls in Canada, with no border to cross. For a short Ontario stay with small children, Journey Behind the Falls is simpler.
