A surprising number of visitors search for "Maid of the Mist Canada side" and arrive at the Canadian riverbank expecting to find it. They will not. The famous boat leaves from the American shore, and the boat on the Canadian side is run by a different company. The good news is that the two docks sit less than two kilometres apart by road, and a couple with passports can ride both before lunch. NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs this as a short cross-border hourly booking: one car, one chauffeur, both boats.

Can you take Maid of the Mist from the Canadian side?

No. Maid of the Mist departs only from Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, New York, about 1.7 km (1 mi) by road across the Rainbow Bridge from the Canadian boat dock, plus border inspection time. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives you over and back; book it "By the hour" in the online booker.

From the Canadian side, the boat you can board without crossing is Niagara City Cruises, the official Niagara Parks tour. Both boats go to the base of the Horseshoe Falls. The question for most couples is not which one, but whether the second is worth the bridge. Our post Is Maid of the Mist in Canada or the USA? covers the naming confusion in more detail.

Prices are the operators' published figures as of 2026. Maid of the Mist's price includes the elevator down to the landing, and its schedule page explains that online tickets are valid any day the boat is open, while tickets bought in person are valid only on the day of purchase. Its boats are all-electric catamarans, and the company has carried visitors since 1846.

What changes when you see the Falls from each boat

Neither boat is a rerun of the other, which is why couples who love the water often do both.

The Canadian boat leaves from below Clifton Hill, so you start with the full face of the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls to your left as you head upriver. The American boat leaves from beside the American Falls themselves. You board at the foot of the Observation Tower, and the first minutes put you close under the rock falls before you swing into the Horseshoe basin. Photographers often prefer the Canadian departure for wide shots and the American one for the sense of scale beside the American Falls.

The Prospect Point Observation Tower is worth a few minutes even without a boat ticket. Niagara Falls State Park describes it as the only panoramic view of all three falls, with the elevator and deck open to everyone. Note that the State Park's Observation Tower page reported the far end of the tower and the Crow's Nest closed for construction in October 2026.

A sample day: both boats, one chauffeur

This is the order we suggest to most couples staying in Fallsview or on Clifton Hill. Adjust for your season.

  1. 9:00 a.m. Canadian boat first. Your chauffeur collects you from the hotel and drops you at the Niagara City Cruises plaza, about 2.5 km and 5–10 minutes from the Fallsview towers. Choose an early timed ticket. You are back up the elevator well before the midday queue.
  2. Around 10:15 a.m. Cross the Rainbow Bridge. From the cruise plaza to Prospect Point is about 1.7 km (1 mi) by road, a few minutes of driving plus the time you spend in the US-bound inspection lane. We never promise how long that takes.
  3. Maid of the Mist. The chauffeur sets you down near Prospect Point and waits in the area. Boarding is first-come, first-served, so a late-morning arrival on a weekday in shoulder season is usually calm. Summer weekends are not.
  4. Lunch on either side. Some couples walk Goat Island or add Cave of the Winds, whose tickets are sold only on site.
  5. Back into Canada. Re-cross the Rainbow Bridge, clear Canadian inspection and return to the hotel, about 3–5 km depending on where you stay.

You can reverse it. Maid of the Mist opens at 9:00 a.m. through the season, and on a summer Saturday crossing early and riding the American boat first, then coming back for an afternoon Canadian sailing, spreads the queues out.

The Rainbow Bridge part

The Rainbow Bridge is the obvious crossing for this day: it lands in Canada beside Clifton Hill and in the US a short drive from Prospect Point. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists it as open to cars, limos and pedestrians, with 16 car inspection lanes into the US.

Three facts worth knowing:

  • Tolls are collected only entering Canada. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission's toll page lists no charge going into the US. A car pays US$6.00 or CA$8.50 on the way back into Canada, as of 2026.
  • Waits vary by hour. CBP's border wait times site shows live US-bound estimates, and the CBSA site covers the return. Our border wait times page explains how to read both.
  • Walking is allowed. Pedestrians use the walkway and pay US$1.00 or CA$1.25 on the Canadian side to walk into the US, as of 2026.

Your chauffeur crosses with you in the same vehicle, answers the officer's questions about the vehicle, and waits on the US side. Our cross-border car service page explains how that works on longer trips too.

Documents for every passenger

This is the part that ends days early. Every person in the car needs their own valid document, and the chauffeur's paperwork does not cover anyone else.

Maid of the Mist's own border-crossing page lists a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence, or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. Canadian and US citizen children under 16 need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship.

Visitors from overseas need more care:

  • Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA before reaching a US land border, according to CBP's current I-94 page.
  • An I-94 is issued electronically at land borders, and the land-border fee is US$30, as of 2026. CBP encourages applying in advance through the CBP Link app or the I-94 website.
  • Re-entering Canada, you need valid Canadian entry status too, including a visitor visa if your nationality requires one. Check it before you leave the hotel.

Our documents for entering the USA page and the international visitors guide set out the rules in full. If one person in your party cannot cross, do the Canadian boat together and send the others over by themselves only if they hold documents too.

Seasons and closing times

The Canadian boat runs April to November, with December sailings listed as weather-permitting. Maid of the Mist's 2026 season runs April 24 to November 8. Late in the year its posted hours shorten: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily from September 28 to October 31, then 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from November 1 to 8. The ticket office closes 15 minutes before the last departure, so an autumn both-boats day should cross by early afternoon.

Spring openings on both sides depend on ice on Lake Erie. In 2026 the Canadian boat opened on May 1.

The honest verdict. If you are two fit adults with passports and good weather, walking across the Rainbow Bridge is a fine way to reach Maid of the Mist, and many people enjoy the view from the walkway. Book the car when the walk is not realistic: rain, small children, a parent with limited mobility, a schedule that adds Goat Island or Lewiston, or simply wanting the wet clothes to stay in a vehicle rather than a backpack. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide explains the trade-offs.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Choose "By the hour" and enter your hotel. Add both stops in the notes: Niagara City Cruises in Canada, then Prospect Point in Niagara Falls, New York.
  2. Pick a car for two. A Standard Sedan or the Mercedes-Benz E / S-Class suits a couple; the fixed fare for each class is shown before you pay.
  3. Confirm passengers and pay. List everyone who will cross. You receive an email confirmation, and the chauffeur checks the plan with you at pickup.

Who this plan suits

Couples are the classic fit, which is why it sits on our couples page: two boats, two views, one relaxed morning. Individuals on a short stay can do the same in three hours. Families should weigh it carefully, because every child needs a document and the day is long for small ones. Groups of up to twelve can cross together in an Executive Sprinter, which keeps everyone in one inspection.

For the bigger picture, read our guide to the Canadian side vs the American side, our Maid of the Mist and Niagara City Cruises pages, the post on Maid of the Mist prices and tickets, and our Niagara City Cruises drop-off guide. Flying in? Buffalo Niagara International is about 40 km (26 mi) from the Fallsview hotels; see the Buffalo airport page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Maid of the Mist on the Canadian or American side?

Maid of the Mist operates from the American side, at Prospect Point in Niagara Falls State Park, New York. The Canadian-side boat is Niagara City Cruises, the official Niagara Parks tour. Both reach the base of the Horseshoe Falls, but you must cross the border to ride Maid of the Mist.

Do I need a passport to ride Maid of the Mist from Canada?

You need a document accepted at a US land border: a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence, or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. Canadian and US citizen children under 16 may use a birth certificate. Visa Waiver visitors also need an approved ESTA and will be issued an electronic I-94.

Which boat is better, Maid of the Mist or Niagara City Cruises?

Both take you into the mist at the base of the Horseshoe Falls, so neither is clearly better. The Canadian boat gives wider views of the American Falls on departure; Maid of the Mist starts right beside them. If you only do one and you are staying in Canada, the Canadian boat avoids the border.

How far is Maid of the Mist from the Canadian boat dock?

By road it is about 1.7 km (1 mi) from the Niagara City Cruises Ticket Plaza across the Rainbow Bridge to Prospect Point. The drive takes a few minutes; the variable is US-bound border inspection, which changes by hour and season. Check live waits on CBP's border wait times site before leaving.

Can I walk across the Rainbow Bridge to Maid of the Mist?

Yes. The Rainbow Bridge has a pedestrian walkway, and walkers heading into the US pay US$1.00 or CA$1.25 on the Canadian side, as of 2026. You still clear US inspection on foot with your documents. Coming back, you clear Canadian inspection at the other end.

Can we ride both boats in one day in October or November?

Yes, if you start early. Maid of the Mist's 2026 hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. until October 31 and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from November 1 until the season ends on November 8. The Canadian boat runs into November, weather permitting. Cross by early afternoon to be safe.

Does the chauffeur wait on the US side?

Yes. On an hourly booking with NiagaraFallsLimo.net, the chauffeur crosses the bridge with you, drops you near Prospect Point and waits in the area until you are off the boat, then drives you back into Canada. The booker shows the fixed all-in fare before you pay.
