Most families picture one boat when they think of Niagara: a crowded deck, ponchos, and the roar of the Horseshoe Falls. In fact there are two Falls boats run by two operators from two countries, plus jet boats that run the rapids further downstream. Picking the right Niagara Falls boat tour is mostly about logistics, not thrills, and those logistics are what the reservations desk at NiagaraFallsLimo.net handles every season.
Which Niagara Falls boat tour should we take?
Stay on the side you are sleeping on. From Ontario, take Niagara City Cruises from 5920 Niagara Parkway, about 1.5 km (0.9 mi) and three minutes from Fallsview. From New York, take the Maid of the Mist at Prospect Point. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drops you at either dock; book the car online with your boat time.
Crossing the river for a boat is possible and often fun, but it adds a border crossing, documents for every passenger and a second currency. For a family on a first visit, the boat on your own bank of the river usually gives the same view with less to organise.
The season calendar for 2026
Niagara boats are seasonal. Spring opening dates depend on ice on Lake Erie and in the river, so the first sailings move from year to year.
- Maid of the Mist (US side): April 24 to November 8, 2026. Daily 9:00 to 5:00 through October 31, then 9:00 to 4:00 from November 1 to 8. In midsummer it ran until 8:00 in the evening. Details are on the Maid of the Mist schedule page.
- Niagara City Cruises (Canadian side): Niagara Parks lists the season as April to November. In 2026 it opened on May 1, later than usual after heavy ice. Check the Niagara Parks boat tour listing for current hours, which vary by date.
- Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours (both sides): a warm-weather operation that typically runs from late spring into early autumn. Next season's dates appear on the operator's own site.
- Winter: none of the Falls boats sail in deep winter. The December to March visitor sees the Falls from the railings, from Journey Behind the Falls or from the towers instead. Our best time to visit Niagara Falls guide maps the whole year.
For the evening, Niagara City Cruises runs a Fireworks Cruise in the fireworks season. In 2026 the Falls fireworks ran nightly at 10:00 pm from May 15 to October 12, according to the Niagara Parks fireworks page. Next year's dates are published by Niagara Parks in spring.
Dock by dock: where each boat leaves from
Niagara City Cruises, 5920 Niagara Parkway, Niagara Falls, Ontario. The dock sits in the gorge below the foot of Clifton Hill. From Fallsview hotels it is about 1.5 km by road, roughly three minutes; from Table Rock about 1.3 km. A car can set you down on the Niagara Parkway close to the entrance, and the return pickup is arranged by time. Boats are wheelchair accessible, a recyclable poncho is included and tickets are timed. Our Niagara City Cruises page has more.
Maid of the Mist, Prospect Point, 1 Prospect St, Niagara Falls, New York. You board by elevator from the Observation Tower in Niagara Falls State Park. From Fallsview it is about 3.3 km (2 mi) via the Rainbow Bridge, roughly eight minutes plus the border. From Buffalo Niagara airport it is about 39 km (25 mi), with no crossing. Boarding is first come, first served. Our Maid of the Mist page covers the attraction.
Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, Queenston, Ontario. Check-in is at 55 River Frontage Road, next to the public Queenston Boat Ramp. From Fallsview it is about 12.9 km (8 mi), around 19 minutes along the Niagara Parkway. The operator also runs a Rapid Transit shuttle from the Floral Clock, which it says may not run all season.
Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, Lewiston, New York. The US departure is on the Lewiston waterfront boardwalk, with check-in on the lower level next to the Griffon Brewery & Gastropub. From Clifton Hill it is about 14 km (8.6 mi), around 20 minutes of driving, plus the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge crossing. The operator's locations page has both addresses.

Falls boat or jet boat?
These are different experiences, and families sometimes book the wrong one.
- A Falls boat (either operator) is a gentle cruise that takes you into the mist at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls. Grandparents, toddlers and anyone who dislikes rough water can ride. You will get damp; the poncho does most of the work.
- A jet boat runs downstream of the Falls, through the Class V Devil's Hole Rapids and into the Niagara Whirlpool, about 45 minutes round trip. It does not go to the foot of the Falls. It has height limits: at least 44 inches for the open Wet Jet and 40 inches for the enclosed Dry Freedom Jet.
The sibling article on the jet boat tour, wet boat vs dome boat explains which jet boat suits which group, and Niagara City Cruises vs a private jet boat compares the two styles of day.
Timing the day: mornings, evenings and the fireworks
Families with young children usually do best with a morning boat, before the heat and the afternoon crowds on the Parkway, and before naps. A morning sailing also leaves the afternoon free for the Butterfly Conservatory or the Niagara Parks Power Station.
Couples and older children often prefer the evening. The Falls are lit every night of the year, and in season the Fireworks Cruise pairs the illumination with the 10:00 pm display. Our illumination and fireworks page lists where to watch from the shore, and a car makes the late return to Niagara-on-the-Lake or Toronto simple.
If you want to fit two boats into one day, book the timed Canadian sailing first and the Maid of the Mist after lunch, and use the "By the hour" option so the car waits through the border crossing.
What to wear, what to bring, and accessibility
- Clothes: quick-drying layers. Even with a poncho, sleeves and shoes get wet, and spring and autumn days in the gorge feel cooler than the town above.
- Shoes: closed shoes with grip. Decks and ramps are wet.
- Bags: a small dry bag for phones. Leave larger bags in the car.
- Accessibility: Niagara City Cruises lists its boats as wheelchair accessible. The jet boat dock is wheelchair accessible but the jet boat itself is not, though staff help guests on and off. Our accessible transportation page explains the wheelchair option in the booker.
When the weather turns: tickets and rain
Niagara weather changes fast, and each operator handles it differently, so read the terms before you buy.
- Maid of the Mist: online tickets are valid on any day the boat operates in the season, which gives a family room to move a rainy morning to a drier one. Tickets bought at the office are good only for that day.
- Niagara City Cruises: tickets are timed, so you are committing to a sailing. Check the conditions shown at checkout on the operator's site before choosing a slot.
- Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours: trips run rain or shine. The operator issues rain check vouchers rather than refunds for weather, and says all sales are final.
If the boat moves, the car can move too. Changing a pickup time is easiest when you contact the reservations desk early; cancellation charges are counted from the scheduled pickup time and set out on your confirmation.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Enter the dock as your destination. Use the address from this guide, plus your hotel, date and a time about 30 minutes before your sailing. For a jet boat, aim to arrive at least 45 minutes early, because the operator requires a safety orientation.
- Match the vehicle to the family. A Standard SUV seats up to 6 with room for a stroller; an Executive Sprinter seats up to 12. For a full boat day, the hourly chauffeur option keeps the car with you.
- Add seats and pay. Add child, toddler or booster seats, pay securely and keep the email confirmation.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
For a family based in Fallsview, visiting the docks across a day:
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | 3 to 19 min between docks, plus any border wait | Fixed fare via booker | Strollers, spare clothes, car seats | Families, multi-dock days, the jet boat in Queenston |
| WEGO visitor bus | Varies with stops and transfers | Adult 24-hour pass CA$16.00, child (3–12) CA$12.00, as of 2026 | Light | Canadian-side docks on a budget |
| Walking | About 1.5 km to the Canadian dock from Fallsview, downhill | Free | Day bag only | The Niagara City Cruises dock on a dry day |
| Rideshare | Short hops; may decline cross-border or Parkway pickups | Surge pricing possible | Depends on the car | Adults without car seats |
| Taxi | Short hops | Metered | Usually fine | One-way trips on the Canadian side |
The honest verdict: for the Canadian Falls boat alone, a walk down from Fallsview or the WEGO bus is perfectly good, and we will say so. The car becomes worthwhile for the Queenston jet boat, which is 13 km away, for the Maid of the Mist from Canada, where the border is involved, and for any day with small children and wet clothes. The chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide sets out the general comparison.
Who this suits
Families get the most from a waiting car on a boat day: seats fitted, spare clothes in the trunk, no hunting for parking on the Parkway. Couples who choose the Fireworks Cruise can be collected after the 10:00 pm display. Individuals on a tight schedule can link a boat with the next attraction. Groups booking a jet boat can arrive together in one Sprinter and meet the 45-minute check-in.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best boat tour at Niagara Falls?
For most visitors, the best boat is the one on the side where you are staying: Niagara City Cruises in Ontario or the Maid of the Mist in New York. Both sail into the Horseshoe Falls basin. Thrill-seekers who want rapids should look at a jet boat instead.
When does the Niagara Falls boat season start and end?
In 2026 the Maid of the Mist ran from April 24 to November 8, and Niagara City Cruises, listed as April to November, opened on May 1. Spring openings depend on ice. Jet boats run a shorter warm-weather season.
How do I get to the Niagara City Cruises dock?
The dock is at 5920 Niagara Parkway, below the foot of Clifton Hill. From Fallsview it is about 1.5 km, roughly three minutes by car, or a downhill walk. WEGO buses also serve the area.
Can we do the Maid of the Mist from a Canadian hotel?
Yes, by crossing the Rainbow Bridge into New York. It is about 3.3 km from Fallsview plus the border wait. Every passenger needs valid documents for the United States and for returning to Canada.
Is there a boat tour at night?
Yes. Niagara City Cruises runs a Fireworks Cruise after dark in the fireworks season, with the illuminated Falls and the 10:00 pm fireworks. In 2026 the fireworks ran nightly from May 15 to October 12.
Are Niagara boat tours suitable for toddlers?
The Falls boats are, with a poncho and dry clothes for afterwards; on the Maid of the Mist, children 5 and under ride free with a paying adult. Jet boats have height limits of 40 or 44 inches depending on the boat.
How early should we arrive for a boat?
For a timed Niagara City Cruises ticket, arrive a little before your slot. The Maid of the Mist boards first come, first served. Jet boat guests must arrive at least 45 minutes before departure for registration and a mandatory safety orientation.
