Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Canada is the shortest airport run into the Ontario side of the Falls, but it is also the only common one with an international border in the middle. NiagaraFallsLimo.net handles both halves: a chauffeur who meets you at Buffalo Niagara International (BUF), drives the Interstates to the river, and stays with you through Canadian customs at the bridge to your hotel door.
How long does it take to get from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?
From Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) to Niagara Falls, Ontario is about 45–50 km (28–31 mi), usually 45–60 minutes of driving plus the time at the border bridge. NiagaraFallsLimo.net meets you at BUF, crosses with you and shows a fixed all-in fare in the online booker before you pay.
The driving part is predictable. The border is not. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) inspection at the bridge can take a few minutes on a quiet Tuesday morning or much longer on a summer Saturday, and nobody can promise you a number in advance. What we can do is check live wait times before departure, choose the bridge with the shortest queue that suits your hotel, and make sure your documents are in hand before the car reaches the booth.
Three bridges, one decision made on the day
From BUF, three bridges lead to the Canadian side of the Niagara River. Each changes the distance a little and the waiting time a lot.
| Bridge | Approx. distance BUF → Falls ON | Usual drive time, no wait | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rainbow Bridge | about 45 km (28 mi) | 45–55 min | Lands beside Clifton Hill and the Falls; the shortest line to most hotels |
| Peace Bridge (Buffalo–Fort Erie) | about 50 km (31 mi) | 50–60 min | Then the QEW north; often the better choice for Fort Erie or the Lake Erie shore |
| Lewiston–Queenston Bridge | about 58 km (36 mi) | 55–65 min | Then north of the city; handy for Niagara-on-the-Lake |
The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is a fourth crossing, but it is reserved for NEXUS members and keeps limited hours, so it only applies if every passenger in the car holds NEXUS. Each bridge has its own guide: Rainbow Bridge, Peace Bridge, Lewiston–Queenston Bridge and Whirlpool Rapids Bridge. Our border wait times page explains how to read the official CBSA and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) feeds.
Niagara Falls Tourism lists the Rainbow, Peace and Lewiston–Queenston bridges as the main crossings for visitors (Niagara Falls Tourism border crossing).
What documents you need in the car
Every passenger, including every child, must carry their own valid travel document. The chauffeur cannot vouch for anyone, and one missing passport stops the whole car at the booth.

- US citizens. Niagara Falls Tourism states that US citizens over 16 entering Canada need a passport, a passport card or an enhanced driver's licence. NEXUS cards are accepted for members.
- Canadian citizens returning home. A Canadian passport or a NEXUS card is the simplest proof of citizenship.
- Visitors from other countries. A valid passport plus whatever Canada requires for your nationality. If you flew into the US on a visa or the Visa Waiver Program, keep your US entry record with you as well, because you will need it again on the way back.
- Children. If a parent or guardian is not travelling, or only one parent is, carry a consent letter. Our page on crossing the border with children explains what to bring.
Full details are on what you need to cross into Canada. Keep documents out of checked bags; the booth is less than an hour after baggage claim.
Check your fixed fare from BUF
Meeting your chauffeur at Buffalo Niagara International
BUF describes itself as offering up to 100 nonstop flights a day to 31 destinations (Buffalo Niagara International overview). Most passengers arrive on US domestic flights and walk straight from the gate to baggage claim, so the pickup itself is usually quick.
Two pickup styles are available in the booker:
- Meet & greet. Your chauffeur waits at baggage claim with a name board, helps with the cart and walks you to the car.
- Curbside. You call or message the number on your confirmation once you have your bags, and the car pulls up at the arrivals curb.
The airport runs a Ground Transportation Program for commercial operators and publishes a separate page for travellers heading to Canada (BUF Canadian ground transportation). Your confirmation tells you exactly where your chauffeur will be. Flight tracking is included, so a delay over Chicago or a fast tailwind from Florida simply moves the pickup.
The route from BUF to the Ontario side
Leaving the airport in Cheektowaga, the chauffeur takes the Interstate network west toward the Niagara River: I-190 north along the river for the Rainbow or Lewiston–Queenston bridges, or toward downtown Buffalo for the Peace Bridge. After Canadian inspection the last stretch is short, whether it is the QEW north from Fort Erie or a few blocks from the Rainbow Bridge up the hill to Fallsview Boulevard.
Peak times are Friday afternoons and evenings in summer, holiday weekends on both sides of the border (Canada Day and Independence Day fall in the same week), and the hours after a big event in Buffalo. Sunday afternoons tend to be busier in the opposite direction, as weekend visitors head home to the US.
Ways to get from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls, Canada, compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | 45–60 min plus the bridge | Fixed fare via the booker, shown before you pay | Up to 6 large bags in an SUV | Families, groups, international visitors, anyone with luggage |
| Rideshare | Similar if a driver will cross | App price, surge pricing possible | Depends on the car | Travellers staying on the US side |
| Airport taxi | Similar if the driver will cross | Metered or posted rate; confirm before leaving | Sedan or minivan | Short US-side trips |
| Shared shuttle | Longer, with other stops | Per-seat price set by the operator | Standard allowance | Solo travellers on a budget |
| Public transit | Several hours with connections and a walk across a bridge | Separate local fares | You carry it | Rarely practical with luggage |
| Rental car | Drive time plus counter and border | Daily rate, fuel, hotel parking; check cross-border rules | Your choice | Visitors driving for several days |
A note on rideshare. Niagara Falls International Airport, just up the road, warns its passengers that rideshare services may not cross the border (Niagara Falls International ground transportation). The same caution applies from Buffalo. Many app drivers are not set up for an international trip, and you only find out when the request is declined.
When a taxi or rideshare is the sensible choice
If you are staying on the New York side, at a hotel in downtown Niagara Falls, NY or in Buffalo itself, there is no border to cross, and a taxi or rideshare from BUF is a reasonable, quick option for one or two people with ordinary bags. The same goes for a solo traveller heading into downtown Buffalo for a meeting.
The chauffeur makes the difference when the trip crosses the river, when there are car seats to fit, when there are more than three of you, or when you land late and do not want to find out at 11 p.m. whether an app driver will take you to Canada. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares them across all of Niagara.
Is it better to fly into Buffalo or Toronto?
It depends on where your flight starts and what you value.
- Buffalo Niagara (BUF) is far closer: about 45–50 km to the Canadian falls. For travellers starting in the US it usually means a domestic flight, often a nonstop one. The trade-off is the border crossing by road.
- Toronto Pearson (YYZ) is about 125–135 km from the Falls, so the drive is longer, usually 1 h 20 – 1 h 40. It has more international nonstops, and no border sits between Pearson and the Ontario side.
Overseas visitors who want to see both countries often fly into one airport and out of the other. Compare the details on our Toronto Pearson page, or look at the smaller Niagara Falls International (IAG) if you are flying Allegiant from Florida or South Carolina.
The trip back: Niagara Falls, Canada to Buffalo Airport
Going home, you enter the United States at the bridge, so CBP inspection comes before the airport rather than at it. Allow for that queue on top of the drive and normal airport check-in. Leaving a Niagara Falls hotel about three and a half hours before a domestic departure is a sensible baseline; add more on summer weekends and holidays.
International visitors should know that CBP issues I-94 entry records electronically at land borders, recommends applying in advance through its website or the CBP mobile app, and requires Visa Waiver Program travellers to hold an approved ESTA before arriving at a land border (CBP I-94 information). Our documents for entering the USA page goes through the rest.
Book your ride to Buffalo Airport
Picking the vehicle for a cross-border airport run
| Vehicle class | Passengers | Bags |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Sedan (Cadillac XTS or similar) | up to 3 | 2 large |
| Mercedes-Benz E / S-Class | up to 2 | 2 |
| Standard SUV (Suburban / Yukon XL) | up to 6 | 6 |
| Executive Black SUV (Escalade / Navigator) | up to 6 | 6 |
| Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz) | up to 12 | carry-on only |
| Executive Jet Sprinter | up to 6 | 2 |
Luggage capacity matters more than usual on this route, because border officers may ask to see inside the trunk. A vehicle that holds everything neatly is quicker to inspect than one with bags on laps. Models are "or similar"; browse the fleet for photos. Private-jet passengers landing at Signature Buffalo Niagara, the airport's FBO, can be met planeside; see private jet and FBO transfers.
Who uses the BUF to Niagara Falls transfer
Individuals from US cities fly a domestic nonstop to Buffalo and want one car to a conference or a meeting in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Couples booking a Fallsview hotel weekend like arriving at the porte-cochère rather than in a hotel parking garage. Families need car seats fitted and everyone's passport checked before the bridge, which a chauffeur who does this daily is used to. Groups, from wedding parties to golf foursomes, fill an SUV or a Sprinter and cross once, together. Our cross-border car service page has more on trips that stay on both sides of the river, and the groups page covers larger parties.
US-side stops on the way
Because the route runs past the American side of the Falls, some travellers add a stop before crossing: Niagara Falls State Park and the Maid of the Mist dock at Prospect Point, or lunch in Niagara Falls, NY. Use multi-stop or "By the hour" mode in the booker. Our Maid of the Mist guide explains where the car drops you, and the Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada route covers pickups from downtown Buffalo hotels rather than the airport.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to get from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?
A pre-booked car that is set up to cross the border is the simplest: about 45–50 km, usually 45–60 minutes plus the bridge, with no change of vehicle. Public transit involves several connections and a walk across a bridge, and app-based rides may decline international trips.
Can you Uber from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?
Sometimes, but not reliably. Many rideshare drivers are not set up to cross into Canada, and Niagara Falls International Airport warns that rideshare services may not cross the border. If your hotel is on the Ontario side, book a car that is confirmed to cross before you land.
How much does a taxi cost from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?
Taxi fares are set by each taxi company and may be metered or posted, so ask before you leave the curb. For a NiagaraFallsLimo.net transfer, the online booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay.
Which bridge will my chauffeur use?
Usually the Rainbow Bridge for hotels near the Falls, the Peace Bridge for Fort Erie and the Lake Erie shore, and the Lewiston–Queenston Bridge for Niagara-on-the-Lake. The final choice depends on live wait times at the moment you leave the airport.
Do I need a passport to go from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada?
You need an accepted travel document. For US citizens over 16, Niagara Falls Tourism lists a passport, a passport card or an enhanced driver's licence. Visitors of other nationalities need a passport and whatever entry permission Canada requires for them. Children need their own documents.
Can you take a taxi from Niagara Falls, Canada to Buffalo Airport?
Yes, if the taxi company will cross. A pre-booked chauffeur is the more predictable option because the pickup time is set around your flight and the expected US inspection at the bridge. Leave about three and a half hours before a domestic departure, more on busy weekends.
Is there a free shuttle from Buffalo Airport to Niagara Falls?
We are not aware of any free public shuttle from BUF to the Canadian side. Some hotels arrange transport for their own guests; ask yours directly. Otherwise the choice is a paid shuttle, a taxi, a rideshare that will cross, or a pre-booked private car.
