Detroit is the one big American city where the shortest road to Niagara Falls runs through Canada. Cross the Detroit River into Windsor and you are on Ontario's Highway 401, heading east toward a waterfall that most people assume is a New York trip. That geography is why "Detroit to Niagara Falls" is searched about 1,600 times a month, and why NiagaraFallsLimo.net, a Niagara chauffeur service with its own desk at the Falls, takes Detroit bookings. This page covers the drive and its three crossings, Detroit airport car service at DTW, black car hours downtown and in the suburbs, and limo and party bus rental for games, concerts, proms and weddings.
How do I get from Detroit to Niagara Falls by private car?
Book a one-way car with NiagaraFallsLimo.net: a chauffeur collects you anywhere in metro Detroit, crosses into Windsor, and drives Highway 401, 403 and the QEW to Niagara Falls, Ontario. It is about 382 km (237 mi), usually 4 h 30 to 5 h plus the border. The booker shows the fixed fare before you pay.
Here is how the service works, said once and plainly. A trip that starts in Michigan is driven by an independent, licensed and commercially insured partner from the LimousineWorldwide.Directory network. We have no Detroit office, garage or local staff, and we do not pretend otherwise. NiagaraFallsLimo.net takes the booking, sets the fixed fare, confirms the vehicle and stays your point of contact until you step out at the hotel. Every other US city we cover works the same way; see the US limo and car service hub.

Three ways across the Detroit River
Leaving Detroit for Ontario, your chauffeur has three crossings to choose from, and the right one depends on where you are picked up and how the traffic looks that hour.
- Ambassador Bridge. The tolled suspension bridge between Detroit and Windsor, open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with a toll.
- Detroit–Windsor Tunnel. It runs under the river from 100 East Jefferson Avenue in the heart of downtown and is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is the natural pick from a downtown hotel. The tunnel does close for some events; its operator, for example, shuts it to motorists on the morning of the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
- Gordie Howe International Bridge. The newest crossing, which opened to traffic on July 27, 2026. The Government of Canada describes it as having direct connections to Ontario's Highway 401 and Michigan's Interstate 75, and its ports of entry are the largest land ports between the two countries. For a pickup in Downriver, Dearborn or anywhere near I-75, it is often the most direct way onto the 401.
What nobody can promise is the wait at Canadian inspection, which changes by the hour. Our border wait times guide shows where to check live estimates before you leave.
The drive itself: Windsor to the Falls
Once through customs in Windsor, the route is almost entirely four-lane-plus highway. Highway 401 runs east across the flat farmland of Essex and Kent counties and past London, then Highway 403 branches off toward Brantford and Hamilton. The car crosses the Hamilton escarpment on the Lincoln M. Alexander and Red Hill Valley parkways and joins the QEW, the Queen Elizabeth Way, for the last stretch along Lake Ontario through St. Catharines to Niagara Falls. Allow about 382 km (237 mi) and 4 h 30 to 5 h of driving, plus the border and a coffee stop. Friday afternoons in summer and holiday long weekends are slower on the QEW near Hamilton.
You can also drive the American way: I-75 south to Toledo, then east along Lake Erie past Cleveland and Erie to Buffalo, crossing into Canada at the Peace Bridge or the Rainbow Bridge. It is about 610 km (380 mi) and 7 h 30 or more, so it only makes sense if you want to stop in Ohio or Buffalo along the way. Our pages on Cleveland car service and Columbus limo service cover that corridor.
Detroit airport car service at DTW
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) in Romulus is about 38 km (24 mi) from downtown by road, usually 30 to 40 minutes outside rush hour along I-94. It has two terminals, and knowing which one you use saves a phone call:
- McNamara Terminal: Delta, Air France, Aeromexico and WestJet.
- Evans Terminal: Air Canada, Alaska, American, Avelo, Frontier, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Royal Jordanian, Southwest, Sun Country, Turkish Airlines, United and Volaris.
The airport says prearranged passengers may meet their driver in designated areas of their terminal's baggage claim or in the Ground Transportation Center, according to DTW's prearranged transportation page. Add meet and greet in the booker if you want the chauffeur inside with a name board. Flight tracking is standard, so a late arrival simply moves the pickup.
A popular booking is DTW straight to Niagara Falls: about 419 km (260 mi), usually a little over five hours plus the border. It suits travellers flying into Detroit on a Delta itinerary who would rather ride than connect again. If you are still choosing flights, compare it with landing at Buffalo Niagara (BUF) or Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and riding the last leg with us.
Black car service and chauffeurs as directed
Detroit car service is mostly business: suppliers visiting campuses in Dearborn, Warren, Auburn Hills and Troy, lawyers between downtown and the suburbs, and trade-show traffic at Huntington Place, the riverfront convention centre at One Washington Boulevard. Detroit's distances are suburban-sized, and a day of meetings can mean hours on the Lodge, I-696 and I-75.
That is what the booker's "By the hour" mode is for. One chauffeur, one car, waiting while you are inside, then on to the next address. The hourly chauffeur service page has the details of booking time rather than a destination. Chauffeurs are licensed, discreet and happy to sign a confidentiality agreement.
For a supplier visiting Windsor plants in the same trip, the car can cross with you; our cross-border car service explains what changes when a business trip involves both sides of the river.
Detroit party bus and limo rental
Downtown Detroit packs its big venues into a few blocks, which is great for fans and hard on traffic.
- Ford Field, home of the Lions, on Brush Street.
- Little Caesars Arena on Woodward Avenue, for the Red Wings, the Pistons and big concert tours.
- The Fox Theatre, also on Woodward, for Broadway tours and shows.
- The Tigers' ballpark at 2100 Woodward, Comerica Park, which is being renamed Fifth Third Park for the 2027 season.
When a sell-out crowd leaves Ford Field, the streets of Greektown and the stadium district stop. A party bus or stretch with an agreed pickup corner is the calm way home. Our concerts and sports transportation page has the pickup habits we recommend.
Prom season in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties brings stretch limousine and party bus requests; weddings around Corktown, Midtown and the Grosse Pointes bring Sprinters for the wedding party. See our wedding limo service and party bus pages. One rule applies everywhere: no drinking in our vehicles, and the chauffeur never drinks. If it is a celebration, a sealed bottle can be ordered in the booker and handed over to open at home.
Every vehicle class we sell, from a Standard Sedan for three to a Stretch SUV Limousine for 16, a 12-seat Executive Sprinter or a Party Bus, can be requested in Detroit; the Michigan partner's fleet decides what is free, and the booker confirms it before you pay. The classes and capacities are on our fleet page.
Comparing your options from Detroit to Niagara Falls
| How | Time door to door | Price note | Bags | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur via Windsor | about 5–6 h with the border | fixed fare via booker | plenty in an SUV or Sprinter | families, groups, anyone with bags |
| Drive yourself | about 5–6 h with the border | fuel and crossing toll | your trunk | people who want their own car in Ontario |
| VIA Rail from Windsor to Toronto, then onward | most of a day, with transfers | rail fares vary by date | moderate | rail fans, solo travellers |
| Fly DTW to BUF or YYZ, then our car | about 4–6 h with check-in | airfare varies; fixed fare for the transfer | airline limits | travellers already at the airport |
| Rideshare or taxi across the border | rarely practical | surge or metered pricing | limited | not recommended |
The honest verdict: for one person on a budget with time, VIA Rail runs from its Windsor station on Walker Road to Toronto, and you can continue from there, though it means a crossing, a train and a second connection. Flying rarely saves time over a 382 km drive. For a family with car seats, a group, or anyone who wants to leave from their own front door and arrive at the hotel's entrance, a pre-booked car wins clearly. Our guide to chauffeur, taxi and rideshare explains the trade-offs.
Documents for the Windsor crossing
Every passenger carries their own documents, and the chauffeur cannot speak for anyone at the booth. For entry into Canada, the Canada Border Services Agency recommends that US citizens carry a valid passport. Coming home, US Customs and Border Protection accepts a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card from US citizens. Visitors from other countries have their own rules. Read documents for entering Canada and the main border crossing guide.
One Detroit-specific trap: NEXUS lanes may only be used when every person in the vehicle, the driver included, is a NEXUS member carrying their card. Our NEXUS and trusted traveller page has the details.
How to book in 3 steps

- Choose the vehicle. The booker lists each class with its fixed all-in fare.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the drive from Detroit to Niagara Falls?
About 382 km (237 mi) from downtown Detroit to the Fallsview hotels through Windsor, usually 4 h 30 to 5 h of driving. Add the time at Canadian inspection, which varies by hour and day, and a short stop. Summer Fridays and long weekends are slower near Hamilton.
Do I need a passport to go from Detroit to Niagara Falls, Canada?
Canada's border agency advises US citizens to bring a valid passport into Windsor. Back into Michigan, US citizens can show a passport, a passport card, an enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS card. Each passenger, including children and visitors from other countries, must carry their own documents.
Which bridge does the chauffeur use: Ambassador, the tunnel or Gordie Howe?
Whichever is quickest from your pickup at that hour. From downtown hotels the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel is closest; from I-75 and the southwest side, the Gordie Howe International Bridge, open since July 27, 2026, connects straight to Highway 401. The Ambassador Bridge is the other option.
Can I book a car from DTW to Niagara Falls?
Yes. Enter Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport as the pickup and your Niagara hotel as the drop-off. It is about 419 km (260 mi), a little over five hours plus the border. Add your flight number so the chauffeur tracks it, and meet and greet if you want to be met inside baggage claim.
How much is a limo in Detroit?
Detroit prices are set per trip, not by a meter: put in your addresses and the booker returns a fixed all-in figure for each vehicle before payment. Compare a sedan, an SUV, a stretch and a party bus side by side and choose. There is no meter and no surge after a game.
Can I book a Detroit party bus for a Lions game or a prom?
You can; the booker confirms whether a party vehicle is free that night. Up to 12 ride on the party bus, up to 16 in a stretch SUV limousine. Prom nights may carry a different cancellation deadline printed on your confirmation, and there is no drinking on board.
