Most people who search Buffalo to Niagara Falls Canada already know the falls are close. What they want to know is how to get across the river without a rental car, a border lane they don't understand, or a rideshare driver who cancels at the bridge. NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs this trip every day as a pre-booked private transfer: your chauffeur picks you up in Buffalo, drives the bridge with you and sets you down in Niagara Falls, Ontario, at the hotel entrance, the casino doors or the top of Clifton Hill. This page is part of our routes and city-to-city transfers collection.
How far is Buffalo from Niagara Falls, Canada?
Downtown Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Ontario is about 36 km (22 mi). Off-peak driving takes roughly 35 to 50 minutes, plus whatever time the border queue adds. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives it door to door with the same chauffeur crossing the bridge with you; enter both addresses in the online booker to see the fixed all-in fare before you pay.
The distance is short; the variable is the bridge. On a quiet weekday morning the booth can be the shortest part of the ride, while on a summer Saturday the queue can outlast the driving. We never quote a crossing time, because nobody honestly can. What we can do is pick the right bridge for the hour, watch the published waits on the way and keep everyone comfortable while the line moves.
If you are landing rather than starting downtown, the Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) transfer page covers flight tracking and the arrivals pickup. The airport sits about 42 km (26 mi) from the Canadian falls, usually 45 to 55 minutes before the border.
Three bridges, one decision
Three crossings connect the Buffalo–Niagara area with Niagara Falls, Ontario for passenger cars, and each suits a different moment.
- Rainbow Bridge. The most direct line into the tourist core. It carries cars, buses and limousines but no commercial trucks, and the Canadian inspection plaza sits at the foot of Falls Avenue, steps from Clifton Hill. Our Rainbow Bridge guide explains its lanes and tolls.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Further downriver, reached from Interstate 190 near Lewiston. It also carries trucks, so its lanes mix commercial and passenger traffic. From the Canadian end it is roughly 10–12 km to the falls. See the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge page.
- Peace Bridge. Right beside downtown Buffalo, landing in Fort Erie, Ontario. From there the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW, Ontario's main highway along the peninsula) runs north to the falls, about 30 km (19 mi) more. Our Peace Bridge page has the plaza details.
A fourth bridge, the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, is reserved for NEXUS members only (more on that below), so it only helps if every occupant, the driver included, holds a NEXUS card.
Which one do we choose? It depends on the published waits when the car leaves, the time of day, and where you are staying. A 10 a.m. Tuesday departure for a Fallsview hotel will probably use the Rainbow Bridge; a 4 p.m. long-weekend Friday may suit the Peace Bridge better, even with the extra QEW kilometres. The chauffeur decides on the day, using the live figures.
The drive out of downtown Buffalo
From most downtown hotels the car joins Interstate 190 heading north along the river. The interstate crosses Grand Island on two bridges that are tolled electronically, with no booths and no cash, which is one reason visitors in rental cars get surprised by a bill weeks later.

North of Grand Island the road reaches Niagara Falls, New York. For the Rainbow Bridge, the chauffeur follows the signs toward the bridge plaza at the edge of downtown, close to the state park. For Lewiston-Queenston, the car stays on I-190 a few more miles to the bridge approach above the Niagara Gorge.
If the Peace Bridge is the better call, the route is shorter on the US side: the bridge plaza is a few minutes from downtown, and the drive continues on the Canadian side up the QEW past Fort Erie, with the river never far to the right.
Rental cars and Canada: if you are weighing a rental instead, confirm that your rental agreement allows travel into Canada and ask how it bills electronic tolls. A chauffeured car removes both questions.
Documents every passenger needs before the bridge
The chauffeur crosses with you, but nobody can carry papers for you. Every passenger, including babies, needs their own documents in hand before the car reaches the booth. At the Canadian booth an officer of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) may speak to each traveller.
- US citizens. The CBSA recommends a valid passport. Without one, you can show documents that together prove your name, date of birth and citizenship, such as a birth certificate or certificate of naturalization, or a US enhanced driver's licence; photo ID may also be asked for. The full list is on the CBSA travel documents page.
- US permanent residents. Arriving by land directly from the US, a green card holder shows the US permanent resident card.
- International visitors staying in the US. You need a passport and, depending on nationality, a Canadian visa. Visa-exempt travellers do not need an eTA (Canada's online travel authorization) when arriving by car; it applies to air travel. Read our guide for international visitors before you go, especially if you will return to the US afterwards.
- Children. Bring ID for each child. If one parent is not travelling, or the adult is not a parent or guardian, carry a consent letter; the CBSA advises having it notarized. Our crossing with children page has the detail.
For the return trip into the US, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) accepts a US passport or passport card, an enhanced driver's licence or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS for US and Canadian citizens; children under 16 can show proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate (CBP's WHTI page). The documents for entering Canada page collects the rest.
Tolls and the paperwork you never see
Bridge tolls on this river are charged in one direction only: entering Canada. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists the passenger-car toll at the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges, as of 2026, at US$6.00 or C$8.50, with the booths placed as you begin to cross into Canada (NFBC toll page). The Peace Bridge lists its auto toll, as of 2026, at US$8.00 or C$11.00 by card (the bridge is now cashless) or US$4.00 with E-ZPass, also collected Canada-bound only (Peace Bridge toll rates).
You will not be asked to pay anything at the booth from the back seat. The fare you see in the booker is the fixed all-in figure for the trip, set before you pay.
Buffalo pickups we handle most
Any Buffalo address works, but these come up again and again:
- Downtown hotels. The Curtiss Hotel on Franklin Street, The Westin Buffalo and Embassy Suites by Hilton Buffalo on Delaware Avenue, and Hotel at the Lafayette on Washington Street. The chauffeur waits at the main entrance or the hotel's drive, depending on the building.
- The Richardson Hotel. On the Richardson Olmsted Campus at 444 Forest Avenue, north of downtown, with room for the car at the front.
- Amtrak stations. Buffalo-Exchange Street (75 Exchange Street) downtown and Buffalo-Depew (55 Dick Road). Give the train number when booking and the arrival is tracked; see our train station transfers.
- Game nights and concerts. KeyBank Center downtown for Sabres games and arena shows; Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park for the Bills. The stadium requires buses and limousines to hold an advance Bus & Limo Lot permit and routes pickups through its Transit Center, so tell the desk your plans when you book. Our concerts and sports transportation page explains how event nights run.
- The waterfront. A day at Canalside and the Buffalo waterfront before heading north is an easy add as a second stop.
Where the car drops you in Niagara Falls, Ontario
The Canadian side is compact, and most stays fall into a handful of drop-off zones:
- Fallsview Boulevard. The tower hotels on the ridge above the Horseshoe Falls, including the Hilton, Marriott Fallsview, Hyatt Regency and the Fallsview Casino Resort hotel. Cars pull into each hotel's own entrance or porte-cochère. Our Fallsview hotels guide lists the doors.
- Falls Avenue Resort. Sheraton Fallsview and The Brock, connected indoors to Casino Niagara and Clifton Hill. From the Rainbow Bridge plaza this is barely a minute away.
- The casino. The Fallsview Casino Resort entertainment doors for a show at the OLG Stage or Avalon Theatre. Guests must be 19 or older.
- Further afield. Lundy's Lane hotels, Great Wolf Lodge on Victoria Avenue, or straight on to Niagara-on-the-Lake; the Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake route shows that next leg.

When the train, a taxi or a walk makes more sense
If you are travelling alone with a backpack and already staying in Niagara Falls, New York, walking across the Rainbow Bridge on its pedestrian walkway is a memorable way to arrive, and you need nothing from us. If your Amtrak ticket already runs through to Niagara Falls, Ontario, stay on the train. A single traveller with a carry-on and a taxi company that confirms it crosses the river will do fine too.
Rideshare is the risky one. Niagara Falls International Airport warns on its ground transportation page that rideshare services may not cross the border, and visitors regularly discover this at the curb.
A pre-booked chauffeur wins when any of these apply: children who need car seats, a group of four or more, more than two large bags, a late or delayed flight, a hotel at the far end of Fallsview, or a schedule that matters, such as a dinner reservation or a show. It also wins when the point of the trip is ease: a known car, a named driver and no surge pricing. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes through the trade-offs in more depth.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada?
Driving takes about 35 to 50 minutes from downtown Buffalo off-peak, for roughly 36 km (22 mi). The border adds a variable amount of time that nobody can promise; it is usually lighter on weekday mornings and heavier on summer weekends and holiday Mondays. Check the CBSA and CBP wait-time pages, or our border wait times guide, before you leave.
Can you Uber from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada?
Sometimes, but do not count on it. Rideshare drivers may not cross the border, and Niagara Falls International Airport says so on its own ground transportation page. If a driver accepts, they may still decline at the bridge. A pre-booked chauffeur crosses as normal service, and the price is fixed before you book, with no surge.
Do I need a passport to go from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada?
The CBSA recommends a passport for US citizens. Other proof of citizenship with photo ID, or a US enhanced driver's licence, can be accepted. For the return into the US, CBP accepts a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card; children under 16 can use a birth certificate. Visitors from other countries need a passport and should check visa rules for both countries.
Does a taxi cost less than a private car from Buffalo to the Canadian side?
It can be for one person with little luggage, if the taxi company crosses the border; fares are metered or set by each company. For three or more people, car seats or several suitcases, a fixed-fare private car is often the simpler choice. Our booker shows the all-in fare for your exact trip before you pay, so you can compare.
Which bridge is fastest from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Ontario?
There is no single answer. The Rainbow Bridge is the most direct into the tourist area, the Peace Bridge is closest to downtown Buffalo, and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is further north. Waits change by the hour, so the chauffeur checks the published figures when you leave and picks the crossing that makes sense on the day.
Can the same car take us back to Buffalo or to the airport?
Yes. Book a return trip in the booker, or a separate one-way ride on another day. Many guests go Buffalo to Fallsview on arrival and Fallsview to Buffalo Niagara International on departure; the airport transfer page explains flight tracking. Multi-stop and By the hour modes also cover a day trip that comes back the same night.
What happens at the border in a chauffeured car?
The chauffeur pulls into a passenger lane, lowers the windows and hands documents to the officer, or the officer speaks to passengers directly. Answer questions about where you are going, how long you will stay and what you are bringing. Declare goods truthfully.
