Here is the detail most American families miss: on US Thanksgiving, it is an ordinary Thursday in Canada. Canadians had their Thanksgiving in October. The shops, attractions and restaurants on the Ontario side keep their normal late-November hours, schools and offices are open, and nobody in a Fallsview restaurant is expecting a holiday rush on Thursday. That makes American Thanksgiving in Niagara Falls a curious mix: a quiet Canadian weekday that turns into a busy cross-border weekend by Friday afternoon.

NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives across these bridges every day. This guide covers the four days from the American side of the river.

Is Niagara Falls, Canada a good place for American Thanksgiving?

Yes. During American Thanksgiving, Niagara Falls, Ontario runs on a normal Canadian schedule, with the Falls lit nightly and the Winter Festival of Lights underway. Buffalo Niagara International is about 42 km (26 mi) from Fallsview, roughly 45 minutes plus the border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net crosses with you at a fixed fare booked online.

In 2026, US Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26. The weekend that follows falls entirely inside the Winter Festival of Lights, which runs from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027.

What is on that weekend

  • Winter Festival of Lights. Displays lit nightly from 5 p.m. to midnight along more than 8 km of the Niagara Parkway, Fallsview and Lundy's Lane. It is free, with donations collected at Dufferin Islands, and its fireworks run at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then nightly from December 18 to January 2, which puts displays on November 27 and 28. Details are on the festival's official site, and our Winter Festival of Lights page covers the drive.
  • The Falls illumination, every night, from 4:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. in November and December.
  • Holiday theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The Shaw Festival's Cinderella (Festival Theatre) and A Year with Frog and Toad (Court House Theatre) both play into December. Old Town is about 23 km from Fallsview, usually 25–35 minutes.
  • Wine country weekends. Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake usually runs its Taste the Season pairing tour on November weekends, Friday to Sunday; in 2026 it runs Fridays to Sundays from November 6 to 29. Passes are sold online only.
  • Year-round Niagara Parks attractions. Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station and its tunnel, the Butterfly Conservatory and Niagara Takes Flight stay open through the winter. Seasonal sites such as the boats and the Aero Car end their seasons in November.

Documents for every passenger

Before anything else, check passports. Every person in the vehicle, including babies, must carry their own valid identification, and your chauffeur cannot cross for anyone who does not.

Entering Canada. The Canada Border Services Agency recommends that US citizens of any age travel with a valid passport. They may instead show other proof of citizenship and identity, such as a birth certificate or a US enhanced driver's licence, according to CBSA's travel documents page. US permanent residents arriving by land should carry their green card.

Returning to the US. US citizens coming home by land may present a US passport, a passport card, an enhanced driver's licence or a trusted traveller card such as NEXUS, under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. US and Canadian citizen children under 16 need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship.

Travelling with grandchildren or a single parent? Canada does not legally require a consent letter, but officers may ask for one, and Global Affairs Canada recommends it for any child travelling without both parents. Our page on documents for entering Canada has the full checklist.

Cannabis stays home. Taking it across the border in either direction is a serious offence, whatever the state you live in allows.

The bridges on a holiday weekend

Three bridges serve this trip by car: the Rainbow Bridge beside the Falls, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge to the north, and the Peace Bridge between Buffalo and Fort Erie. The Canada Border Services Agency says holiday long weekends are the busiest periods at the border, and it has advised that early mornings are the best time to avoid waits.

How we plan the weekend for clients:

  • Arrive early. Where flights allow, we suggest crossing north on Wednesday evening or early Thursday, ahead of the weekend traffic.
  • Expect company on Friday and Saturday, when day-trippers and shoppers add to the flow in both directions.
  • Give Sunday the biggest buffer, especially southbound in the afternoon, when families head home for Monday.

We never promise how long a crossing takes. We check live waits before leaving the hotel and choose the bridge on the day. For heading north into Canada, CBSA publishes border wait estimates; for heading south, CBP runs its own wait-time site. Our border wait times page explains how to read both, and our post on border crossing on holiday weekends goes further.

Book your cross-border Thanksgiving ride

Getting there from Buffalo, the airport or further afield

  • Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) to Fallsview: about 42 km (26 mi), usually around 45 minutes before the border. See our Buffalo Niagara airport transfers page; we track your flight, which matters on the busiest travel days of the US year.
  • Downtown Buffalo to Fallsview: about 34 km (21 mi), roughly 30–40 minutes before the border. Our Buffalo to Niagara Falls Canada route page covers hotel pickups.
  • Rochester, Cleveland, Pittsburgh: longer drives, for which a private car means one door-to-door journey and one border crossing with a chauffeur who does it daily.
  • By train: Amtrak's Maple Leaf stops at Niagara Falls, New York and Niagara Falls, Ontario. There is no customs on board; passengers leave the train with their bags for inspection at the border, then reboard.

Families often ask whether a rideshare can take them across. It is not something to count on: Niagara Falls International Airport warns travellers that rideshare services may not cross the border. A cross-border car service removes that uncertainty.

American Thanksgiving dinner in Niagara Falls

Because it is a regular weekday in Canada, a traditional turkey dinner is not a standard menu item on the Ontario side. Some hotels may mark the American holiday for their US guests; many will not. If Thanksgiving dinner matters, ask your hotel when you book the room, and reserve a table for Thursday evening the same week. The advantage is that view restaurants which are hard to book in summer can be easier to book on a late-November Thursday.

Prices are in Canadian dollars, and most businesses accept major credit cards. Our post on paying in US dollars in Niagara Falls, Canada covers exchange rates and cash.

Black Friday shopping on both sides

The Outlet Collection at Niagara, at 300 Taylor Road in Niagara-on-the-Lake, has more than 100 outlet brands, about 14 km from Fallsview. Canada One Outlets is on Lundy's Lane, about 4.5 km away. On the New York side, Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA is on Military Road, about 9.5 km from Fallsview plus the border.

Shopping comes with a customs question on the way home. US residents who have been out of the country for at least 48 hours can bring back US$800 of goods duty-free, with one litre of alcohol for travellers aged 21 or older. Under 48 hours, the exemption drops to US$200. Keep receipts in one place for the officer.

The verdict. Families who drive their own car up from Ohio or Pennsylvania often keep it, and that is reasonable; once parked at the hotel, the tourist core is walkable and WEGO covers the rest. Inside Niagara Falls, Ontario, a local taxi is fine for short hops. Where a pre-booked chauffeur wins is the flight into Buffalo on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, the evening trip to the lights with car seats, the Shaw holiday matinee in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the Sunday run back to the airport when you cannot afford to misjudge the bridge.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter the trip. Pickup at BUF (with flight number), a Buffalo hotel or your home, and drop-off at your Canadian hotel, with the date and time.
  2. Choose the vehicle. Families usually take a Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV (six passengers, six bags); an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12.
  3. Add passengers and extras. Add bags, child seats and meet and greet, then pay securely and receive your confirmation by email. Every passenger brings their own documents; the chauffeur handles the bridge.

Who this weekend suits

Families are the heart of US Thanksgiving travel, and the documents, car seats and border planning are where a chauffeur helps most; our families page covers seats and pacing. Couples use the quieter Thursday for a view dinner and the lights. Individuals flying in to meet family on the Canadian side get a straight run from the gate. Groups of relatives from several cities share a Sprinter. For a longer stay, see a two-night Niagara Falls weekend from Buffalo. And for a sense of Canada's own holiday, our post on Canadian Thanksgiving along the Parkway shows the October version.

Frequently asked questions

Is US Thanksgiving a holiday in Canada?

No. Canada celebrates Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. On American Thanksgiving, Niagara Falls, Ontario keeps normal weekday hours: attractions, shops and restaurants open as usual, and traditional turkey dinners are not a standard menu item. Ask your hotel if Thanksgiving dinner is important to your family.

What documents do Americans need to visit Niagara Falls, Canada?

CBSA recommends a valid passport for US citizens of any age entering Canada; other proof of citizenship and identity is also accepted. To return to the US by land, use a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card. US and Canadian citizen children under 16 need only proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

How busy is the border on US Thanksgiving weekend?

Busy, especially on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon heading south. The Canada Border Services Agency says holiday long weekends are the busiest periods and advises early mornings to avoid waits. Check live estimates before leaving, and allow a generous buffer for any flight home.

Can an Uber take us from Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada?

Not reliably. Rideshare drivers may not be able to take a trip across the border, and Niagara Falls International Airport warns travellers that rideshare services may not cross. A pre-booked cross-border car service with a known vehicle and driver avoids being stranded on the wrong side of the river.

What is open on the Canadian side on Thanksgiving Day?

Most things, because it is a regular Thursday in Canada. The Falls are lit nightly from 4:30 p.m., the Winter Festival of Lights runs 5 p.m. to midnight, and Niagara Parks' year-round attractions keep winter hours. Seasonal attractions such as the boat tours end their seasons in November.

How much can we bring back to the US duty-free?

US residents away for at least 48 hours may bring back US$800 of goods duty-free every 31 days, including one litre of alcohol for travellers 21 or older. Under 48 hours, or after another trip within 30 days, the exemption is US$200, and family members cannot combine those smaller exemptions.

How much is a car from Buffalo airport to Niagara Falls, Canada?

It depends on the vehicle and where in Niagara you are staying. Type in the airport, your hotel and the vehicle, and the booker returns a fixed fare before payment, with no holiday surge. Enter your flight number so we can track your arrival.
