The Niagara Parkway is a two-lane road that follows the Niagara River from the Horseshoe Falls north to Lake Ontario. On an ordinary October afternoon it is a pleasant drive. On Thanksgiving weekend, with the maples turning along the gorge and the vineyards going gold on the flats near Niagara-on-the-Lake, it is the reason many Ontario families make Thanksgiving in Niagara Falls a tradition. The catch is that everyone else has the same idea, the pull-offs fill, and the person driving sees mostly brake lights.

This plan from NiagaraFallsLimo.net follows the Parkway north, stop by stop, then deals with timing, the border and the drive home.

When is Thanksgiving weekend, and what changes in Niagara Falls?

Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October; in 2027 it falls on October 11. That weekend Niagara's colours are usually near their best along the Niagara Parkway, which runs about 24 km from Table Rock to Niagara-on-the-Lake. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books a chauffeured colour drive by the hour at a fixed fare online.

Thanksgiving Day is an Ontario public holiday, so many people have the Saturday to Monday free. GO Transit ran a Saturday schedule on Thanksgiving Day in 2026, according to its holiday schedules page. In the United States, the same Monday is the Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day holiday, so the bridges can be busy in both directions, and the Canada Border Services Agency says holiday long weekends are the busiest periods.

The Falls fireworks series traditionally ends with the long weekend. In 2026 the nightly 10 p.m. displays ran from May 15 to Monday, October 12, Thanksgiving Monday, per the Niagara Parks fireworks page. The 2027 dates had not been posted when we wrote this. The Falls are lit from 6:15 p.m. in the first half of October.

The Parkway north, stop by stop

Start at the Horseshoe Falls and head downriver. Distances are from Table Rock Centre.

Table Rock and the brink (0 km)

Begin with the Falls themselves while the morning is quiet. In October, the trees along Queen Victoria Park and the islands upriver are already colouring. Your chauffeur drops you at Table Rock and meets you at an agreed point after you have walked the railing.

The Whirlpool Aero Car (about 5 km)

The antique cable car, running since 1916, crosses the gorge above the Niagara Whirlpool. It travels 3,500 ft and crosses the international border four times without leaving Canada, so no passport is needed. It is seasonal, April to November, and in its 2024 Thanksgiving notice Niagara Parks reminded visitors that the Aero Car and White Water Walk had only a few weeks left before closing for winter. From the cabin, the gorge walls in October are a mosaic. See our Whirlpool Aero Car page for drop-off details.

The Niagara Glen (about 8 km)

Stairs lead into the gorge and 4 km of rugged trails through old-growth Carolinian forest, open sunrise to sunset. In fall 2026, part of the Terrace Trail and all of the Whirlpool Trail were closed for maintenance, so check trail status before you go. Our Niagara Glen and Botanical Gardens page explains which parking area the car uses. The Botanical Gardens next door are free and open daily.

The Floral Clock (about 10 km, 15–20 minutes from the Falls)

The Floral Clock at 14004 Niagara Parkway has a face 40 ft across, planted with up to 16,000 plants and replanted twice a year, with Westminster chimes every quarter hour, according to Niagara Parks. It is a five-minute stop and the best photo of the day for children.

Queenston Heights (about 11 km)

The top of the escarpment, with picnic lawns, trails shaded by maples, the Landscape of Nations Memorial and Brock's Monument, which rises 56 m (185 ft). The monument's hours shifted during the 2026 season while Parks Canada worked on it. Our post on Queenston Heights and Brock's Monument covers the detour.

Wine country and Old Town (about 24 km, 30–40 minutes)

Below the escarpment the Parkway runs past orchards and vineyards into Niagara-on-the-Lake. Inniskillin sits at Line 3 and the Parkway, Reif Estate a little farther north, and the Riverbend Inn's Georgian mansion beside the road. Then Queen Street and lunch.

The whole Parkway is part of a 56 km band of parkland Niagara Parks manages along the river, from Fort Erie to Lake Ontario. Our post on the Niagara Parkway scenic drive covers the southern half too.

A harvest afternoon at the wineries

Thanksgiving usually falls during Niagara's grape harvest, and the tasting rooms are lively. Lake Ontario's breezes moderate the temperature and lengthen the fall growing season on the Niagara Peninsula, which VQA Ontario credits for its cool-climate character.

For a family group, the practical approach is two or three wineries rather than six, with lunch in between. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries page lists the estates on the Parkway, Niagara Stone Road and John Street East, and the Niagara wine tour limo service explains how an hourly booking works. Readers who want the wine without the turkey crowds can read our harvest-season wine tour post.

Two rules: nobody drinks in our vehicles, and the chauffeur never drinks. That is the whole point of having a driver on a winery day. Bottles bought as gifts travel home sealed.

Thanksgiving dinner out in Niagara Falls

Not every family wants to cook in a hotel suite. In 2024, Niagara Parks ran Thanksgiving feature menus at Table Rock House Restaurant over the long weekend and a turkey lunch at Legends on the Niagara, as its 2024 Thanksgiving notice described. Look for the current year's menus in early October, and book early, because holiday seatings fill. Winery restaurants in Niagara-on-the-Lake also take Thanksgiving bookings well ahead.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip

RidesharePoint to point only; waits between stops not includedSurge pricing on a busy long weekendSmall trunkOne-way hops, such as hotel to Old Town

WEGO busHop-on, hop-off; NOTL shuttle via the Floral ClockAdult 24-hour pass $16.00, child (3–12) $12.00 (as of 2026)Day bagBudget sightseeing, no wineries
Driving yourselfSlow in Thanksgiving traffic, plus parking at each stopFuel and paid lotsWhatever fitsSmall groups where nobody wants to taste wine

The honest verdict. A couple doing the Falls and one ride to Old Town for dinner can manage nicely with WEGO in the day and a taxi in the evening. A rideshare is fine for a single hop. The pre-booked car makes sense when you want five stops and nobody wants to drive: a family with grandparents who should not walk between lots, a car seat in the back, two wineries after lunch and a drive back to Toronto at dusk. The long weekend is when pull-offs fill and parking at the Glen and the Floral Clock gets tight; a chauffeur drops you at the door and loops back. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide explains the trade-offs in more detail.

Getting there from Toronto and back

Downtown Toronto to the Falls is about 129 km (80 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak, and the Saturday morning of a long weekend is rarely off-peak. Leave early. Monday afternoon heading back up the QEW is the slowest stretch of the weekend; aim to leave Niagara by early afternoon or after dinner.

If you are based in the Falls, the inland route to Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 23 km (15 mi) and usually 25–35 minutes. That is the faster way back after dark; the Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page compares both roads.

Pack for three kinds of weather in one day. Mornings at the brink can be cold and damp, because the mist off the Horseshoe Falls drifts over the railing whatever the forecast says. The Glen's stone stairs need proper shoes with grip, and wet leaves make them slick. By mid-afternoon in the vineyards it can feel like late summer. Layers, a light rain shell and a spare pair of socks for the children cover most of it, and with a chauffeur the extra bags simply stay in the car between stops. Photographers should plan the Floral Clock and Queenston Heights for the morning, when the light comes across the river, and save the vineyards for the low sun later in the day.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Set up the day. Enter your hotel or home as pickup, choose "By the hour", and list your stops in the notes: Table Rock, the Aero Car, the Floral Clock, two wineries, Old Town.
  2. Pick the vehicle. Most families fit in an SUV, up to six passengers with six bags; an Executive Sprinter takes up to 12 for a reunion. The fixed fare shows before you pay.
  3. Add passengers and seats. Include child, toddler or booster seats, then pay securely. Your confirmation comes by email. Long weekends may carry a cancellation deadline different from our standard 72-hour terms; it is printed on the confirmation.

Who this weekend suits

Families are the Thanksgiving crowd, and a car with the right seats turns a tiring day into an easy one; our families page covers child seats and pacing. Couples often trade the Falls for a slow afternoon in two wineries and dinner in Old Town. Individuals visiting from abroad get the classic Canadian autumn in one drive, with the chauffeur explaining the stops. Groups, from reunions to cycling clubs who have finished their ride, travel together in a Sprinter. American visitors planning their own Thanksgiving in November have a separate guide: US Thanksgiving visitors in Niagara Falls Canada.

Frequently asked questions

When is Thanksgiving in Canada in 2027?

Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October. In 2027 it is Monday, October 11, making a long weekend from Saturday, October 9. It is a public holiday in Ontario. The US holiday of Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day falls on the same Monday.

Are the fall colours at their peak at Thanksgiving in Niagara?

Often close to it, though timing varies with each year's weather and from one stretch of the river to the next. For the best chance, do the Parkway on the Saturday or Sunday, in the morning, before traffic builds.

Are the Niagara Falls fireworks on during Thanksgiving weekend?

In 2026 the nightly 10 p.m. fireworks series ran from May 15 to October 12, Thanksgiving Monday. The 2027 schedule had not been announced when we checked in October 2026. The Falls illumination runs every night, from 6:15 p.m. in the first half of October.

Is the Whirlpool Aero Car open at Thanksgiving?

It is a seasonal attraction, running from April to November, so it is normally open over Thanksgiving weekend. Niagara Parks has noted that the Aero Car and White Water Walk have only a few weeks left at that point before closing for winter. Check hours on the Niagara Parks site before you go.

How long does it take to drive the Niagara Parkway?

From Table Rock to Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 24 km and 30–40 minutes with no stops. With the Aero Car, the Floral Clock, Queenston Heights and a winery or two, plan on most of a day. A by-the-hour booking lets you stop where you like without hunting for parking.

Can we visit wineries with children on Thanksgiving?

Many wineries welcome families in their shops and grounds, but tastings are for adults of legal drinking age, which is 19 in Ontario. Plan shorter stops, pack snacks, and book child or booster seats in the booker so the drives between estates are easy.

What does a Thanksgiving colour tour by car cost?

It depends on the vehicle and how many hours you book. Choose the hours and the vehicle in the booker and the all-in fare appears before you pay, with no long-weekend surge. Compare an SUV and a Sprinter if your party is close to six people.
