Most people meet the Niagara Parkway in pieces: a stretch past the Horseshoe Falls, a glimpse of the Floral Clock on the way to wine country. Driven end to end, the Niagara Parkway scenic drive is something else, a single river road that starts beside Lake Erie at Fort Erie and ends at the mouth of the river in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Niagara Parks, which manages the corridor, describes the parkway as 56 kilometres long. This guide walks it south to north, the way the river flows, and explains why the driver's seat is the worst seat in the car for this particular road.

NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs this route as an hourly booking, so you can stop where you like and keep the car waiting.

How long does the Niagara Parkway scenic drive take?

Driving the Niagara Parkway from Old Fort Erie to Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake covers about 55 km (35 mi). Without stops, allow roughly an hour at parkway speeds; with five or six stops, plan four to six hours. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books it "By the hour" in the online booker, with the fixed fare shown before you pay.

What stretches the day is the number of places that deserve twenty minutes on foot. A route planner gives about 31 km (19 mi) from Old Fort Erie to the Fallsview area, usually under 30 minutes, and about 22 km (14 mi) from Fallsview to Fort George, usually 25 to 35 minutes. Those times assume no stops, no summer traffic in the Falls core and no wait at a busy lookout. On a sunny Saturday in July or a colour weekend in October, the stretch past Table Rock can move at walking pace, so build in slack.

With only a morning, do the northern half, Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake. With a full day, start at Fort Erie.

Why being driven changes this road

The parkway runs on the Canadian bank of the Niagara River. Heading north, the river is on your right, so the northbound lane is the one closest to the water. That sounds like good news for whoever is driving, but it is the passenger who gets the view. The driver is watching cyclists, tour coaches pulling out of lookouts, joggers on the paved trail and the occasional deer near the Glen.

A few other honest reasons to hand over the wheel:

  • Parking is the real time sink. The lots at the big stops near the Falls fill early in summer. A chauffeured car drops you at the door and waits or circles.
  • Wine country sits on this road. Several wineries front the parkway between Queenston and Niagara-on-the-Lake. If anyone in your party plans a tasting, nobody in your party should be driving afterwards.
  • One-way is easy. Finish at dinner in Old Town without backtracking for a parked car.

The southern stretch: Fort Erie to Chippawa

Old Fort Erie is the natural starting line. It is a War of 1812 National Historic Site run by Niagara Parks, open seasonally from May to October; the original fort was built in 1764. Even when the gates are closed for the season, the grounds and the view across the river mouth to Buffalo make a good first stop.

From the fort, the parkway follows the river north past riverside homes, the quietest part of the drive. You pass the Peace Bridge approaches in Fort Erie; if your day continues to Buffalo, our Peace Bridge guide covers tolls and lanes. The scenic drive itself stays in Canada.

North of Fort Erie the Niagara River Recreation Trail, a paved path built in 1986 and closed to motor vehicles, runs alongside much of the road. Niagara Parks splits it into four sections, and the Black Creek to Fort Erie and Chippawa to Black Creek legs cover this stretch. If someone in your group wants to cycle a section, the car can meet them at the next parkette.

The Falls stretch: Dufferin Islands to the Floral Showhouse

Past Chippawa the river picks up speed and the road bends toward the brink. Pull in first at Dufferin Islands, about ten acres of paths and wooden footbridges a short walk south of Table Rock. Niagara Parks says the islands were made in the early 1900s from fill left over when the nearby power station's forebays and tunnels were dug. It is the calmest twenty minutes near the Falls.

Then comes the busiest kilometre of the parkway, at the Horseshoe Falls and Table Rock Centre. A chauffeured car can let you out at the Table Rock side and collect you after you have walked the railing; our Journey Behind the Falls page explains the drop-off in more detail. The Niagara Parks Power Station at 7005 Niagara Parkway sits between Table Rock and the Floral Showhouse and is open year-round, a good rain plan.

The Floral Showhouse, a short walk south of the Horseshoe Falls, is open all year as well. If you are doing this drive between mid-November and early January, the Winter Festival of Lights runs along more than 8 km of the Parkway, Fallsview and Lundy's Lane, so an evening version of this stretch is worth considering.

The gorge stretch: Whirlpool to Niagara Glen

North of the Rainbow Bridge, the parkway climbs above the gorge. Three stops cluster here:

  1. Whirlpool Aero Car. The antique cable car has run since 1916 and crosses 3,500 feet over the Niagara Whirlpool, crossing the border four times without leaving Canada, so no passport is needed. It is seasonal, April to November; see our Whirlpool Aero Car page.
  2. White Water Walk. An elevator drops you to a boardwalk beside the rapids. Also seasonal.
  3. Niagara Glen. Stairs lead down to about 4 km of rugged trail through old-growth Carolinian forest. Hiking is allowed sunrise to sunset only, and in fall 2026 part of the Terrace Trail and all of the Whirlpool Trail were closed for maintenance. The Niagara Glen and Botanical Gardens page covers trailhead logistics.

The Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory face the Glen across the road. Our post on the Butterfly Conservatory and Floral Clock is the gentler version of this stretch.

The escarpment stretch: Floral Clock and Queenston Heights

A few minutes north, the Floral Clock sits on the river side of the road. Its face is 40 feet across and holds up to 16,000 plants, replanted twice a year, with Westminster chimes every quarter hour, according to Niagara Parks. It is a five-minute stop unless you wait for the chime.

Then the road drops down the Niagara Escarpment past Queenston Heights Park, the southern end of the Bruce Trail. Brock's Monument rises 56 m (185 ft) above the park, with 235 steps to the top, per the Friends of Fort George, who note that monument hours are shifting for the rest of the 2026 season while Parks Canada does work there. Our post on Queenston Heights and Brock's Monument has the climb details. The village of Queenston and the Laura Secord Homestead are just below; the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge to New York is beside them.

The vineyard stretch: Queenston to Niagara-on-the-Lake

Below the escarpment the land flattens into orchards and vines, and the parkway becomes the prettiest farm road in the province. Landmarks along this section:

  • McFarland House, at 15927 Niagara Parkway, the oldest property Niagara Parks owns, used as a military hospital in the War of 1812. It runs costumed tours and a conservatory tea room, May to October.
  • Wineries fronting the road, including Reif Estate Winery at 15608 Niagara Parkway and Inniskillin at Line 3 and the Parkway. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries guide lists more, and the wine tour limo service is built for this stretch.
  • Riverbend Inn & Vineyard at 16104 Niagara River Parkway, a Georgian mansion with a restaurant, useful as a lunch stop.

A note that applies to every winery on this road: there is no drinking in our vehicles. Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law forbids a driver to permit it. If you buy a bottle, it travels sealed in the trunk, and the chauffeur never drinks.

The drive ends at Fort George National Historic Site, the Parks Canada fort at the edge of Old Town. From there Queen Street is a two-minute ride. Our Fort George page covers visiting hours and drop-off.

A sample day, south to north

A relaxed version for a couple staying in Fallsview:

  1. 9:00 Pickup, south to Old Fort Erie (about 30 minutes).
  2. 11:00 Dufferin Islands, then Table Rock.
  3. 12:30 Lunch near the Falls or at a parkway winery.
  4. 14:00 Aero Car or Niagara Glen.
  5. 15:15 Floral Clock, Queenston Heights, a winery.
  6. 17:15 Dinner on Queen Street; the car returns you after.

That is seven or eight hours with the return. Our Niagara Falls to Niagara-on-the-Lake route page covers the faster way back on the highway.

The honest verdict: if you only want to get from the Falls to Old Town, a rideshare or the WEGO and its Niagara-on-the-Lake connection will do the job. Niagara Parks' WEGO page shows the lines. Where a pre-booked car wins is the full-length drive, because rideshare is built for single trips, not for waiting outside a fort while you walk the ramparts. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes deeper.

Who this drive suits

Couples get the most from it: a slow day, a winery lunch, nobody watching the road. Families can split it in two, with the gorge stops one day and the vineyard stretch another, and a car with child seats already fitted. Small groups of friends fit in an SUV and avoid deciding who stays sober. Solo travellers can do the northern half in three hours. See how we plan for couples and for families.

Flying in? See the Toronto Pearson transfer page. Our post on Fort Erie to Niagara Falls along the Niagara Parkway covers the southern leg as a transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Niagara Parkway really 56 km long?

Niagara Parks describes the parkway as 56 kilometres, running along the Canadian bank of the Niagara River from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake. A route planner measuring Old Fort Erie to Fort George gives about 55 km, so expect a figure in that range depending on where you start and finish.

Which direction is best for the Niagara Parkway drive?

North is the usual choice. The river is on your right heading north, so the northbound lane is closest to the water, and you finish in Niagara-on-the-Lake in time for dinner. Starting at the Lake Erie end also means the quieter scenery comes first and the Falls and vineyards build through the day.

Can a chauffeured car stop at the lookouts?

Yes. The parkway has lookouts and parkettes with parking along the river, and the chauffeur can pull in at those or drop you at the main attractions near Table Rock. In peak summer the busiest lots fill, so the car may drop you and circle back rather than park.

Do I need a passport for the Niagara Parkway?

Not for the drive. The parkway stays in Canada end to end, and even the Whirlpool Aero Car, which crosses the border line over the gorge, needs no passport. Documents matter only if you add a bridge crossing into New York.

Can we stop at wineries on the parkway?

Yes, several wineries sit directly on the parkway between Queenston and Niagara-on-the-Lake. There is no drinking in our vehicles under Niagara Region's by-law, so tastings happen at the winery. Bottles you buy ride sealed in the trunk, and your chauffeur never drinks.

What is the best season for the drive?

May to mid-October has every seasonal stop open, including Old Fort Erie, the Aero Car and McFarland House. Autumn colour weekends are busy. From mid-November to early January the Winter Festival of Lights suits an evening drive.

How much does a chauffeured parkway drive cost?

The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, number of hours and vehicle before you pay. Choose "By the hour", add your stops in the notes and compare classes side by side. There are no surge prices on a pre-booked ride.
