Niagara Falls border wait times are among the most searched travel figures in the region, on both sides of the river. The trouble is that a single "wait time" hides a lot: which bridge, which direction, which lane, and how old the reading is. This guide sets out the official sources for each of the four Niagara crossings, explains what the published minutes actually count, and shows how NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans chauffeured cross-border trips without ever promising a crossing time.
How do I check Niagara Falls border wait times?
Use CBSA's border wait times table for traffic entering Canada, CBP's bwt.cbp.gov site or app for traffic entering the US, and the bridge operators' pages for both directions. The Rainbow Bridge is under 2 km from the Falls; the Peace Bridge about 33 km. NiagaraFallsLimo.net checks these feeds before every cross-border pickup; book online.
Always note two things on any reading: the direction it covers and the time it was last updated.
The four Niagara crossings at a glance
| Crossing | Connects | Who may cross | Hours | Trucks | NEXUS lane |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rainbow Bridge | Niagara Falls ON tourist district – Niagara Falls NY | Cars, RVs, buses, limos, pedestrians, bicycles | 24 hours | No | None listed |
| Whirlpool Rapids Bridge | Downtown Niagara Falls ON – downtown Niagara Falls NY | NEXUS members only, cars only (Global Entry US-bound) | 7 a.m. – 11 p.m. | No | Whole bridge is NEXUS |
| Lewiston-Queenston Bridge | Queenston (Niagara-on-the-Lake) – Lewiston NY | Cars, RVs, buses, limos, trucks, bicycles | 24 hours | Yes | Into Canada daily 8 a.m.–8 p.m.; into US weekdays 6–8 a.m. |
| Peace Bridge | Fort Erie ON – Buffalo NY | Cars, buses, trucks | 24 hours | Yes | Into Canada 24 hours; into US shorter hours |
Sources: the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (Rainbow, Whirlpool, Lewiston-Queenston), the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority (Peace Bridge), and the CBSA office directory. Each bridge has its own detailed page: Rainbow Bridge, Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge and Peace Bridge.
The official sources, and what each one covers
Into Canada: CBSA. The CBSA border wait times page covers US-to-Canada traffic at the busiest land crossings. For Niagara it lists Queenston Lewiston Bridge (travellers and commercial), Niagara Falls Rainbow Bridge (travellers only) and Fort Erie (Peace Bridge). Each line carries an estimate and an "Updated" time. It does not show US-bound waits.

Into the United States: CBP. CBP's Border Wait Times site and its free app list "Buffalo/Niagara Falls" crossings: the Peace Bridge, the Rainbow Bridge, the Lewiston Bridge and the Whirlpool Bridge. Times are broken down by lane type. CBP's feed says each border location updates its estimates hourly, and its app help notes the app refreshes every five minutes even though a displayed time may be up to 60 minutes old.
Both directions: the bridge operators. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission posts traffic conditions for its bridges in both directions; Whirlpool data is updated hourly because no real-time feed exists there. The Peace Bridge authority shows car, truck and NEXUS delays both ways, plus traffic cameras and a mobile page.
If you are already sitting in traffic and checking a phone, the operator pages are the quickest. If you are planning tomorrow, look at the agency figures across a few hours today to see how they move.
What a published wait actually measures
Read the small print on any of these screens and three caveats appear.
- It is the queue to the booth. CBP describes its estimate as the time to reach the primary inspection booth, the first point of contact with an officer. Secondary inspection, if you are referred, comes after.
- It excludes the approach. CBSA states plainly that its estimates do not include delays on roads leading to a port of entry. A slow QEW exit or a jammed Buffalo ramp sits on top of the number.
- It is an estimate, and it ages. Readings are produced at intervals, not continuously. A 10-minute figure at 2:00 p.m. may be stale by 2:40 p.m.
So the formula for planning is: drive time to the plaza, plus approach traffic, plus the published wait, plus a margin. That margin is the part people forget.
Direction matters more than bridge
The two countries publish separately because the queues are separate. On a Sunday afternoon in summer, Canada-bound traffic can be heavy while US-bound lanes are quiet, and the pattern can reverse at other times. Before you compare bridges, make sure you are reading figures for your own direction:
- Heading to Buffalo, Lewiston or BUF from Ontario: CBP figures.
- Heading to Niagara Falls ON, Niagara-on-the-Lake or Toronto from New York: CBSA figures.
Lanes: General, NEXUS, Ready Lane and commercial
CBP shows passenger-vehicle waits for up to three lane types at Niagara.
- General: everyone with valid documents.
- NEXUS: members of the trusted traveller program only. CBSA's rule is that everyone in the vehicle, of any age, must be a member, and the driver is responsible for checking. See NEXUS and trusted travellers.
- Ready Lane: US-bound, for vehicles where every traveller aged 16 or older carries an RFID card, such as a US passport card, an enhanced driver's licence, an enhanced permanent resident card or a trusted traveller card. CBP's feeds have shown afternoon Ready Lane hours at the Peace and Rainbow bridges, Monday through Thursday.
- Commercial: trucks, at Lewiston-Queenston and the Peace Bridge only. A chauffeured passenger car is not commercial freight and does not use these lanes.
A chauffeured car uses the general lane unless the chauffeur and every passenger hold NEXUS, which is rare. Ready Lane eligibility depends on what cards your party carries.
What tends to slow a crossing
Official sources do not publish average waits, and we will not invent them. They do name the usual pressures. CBSA says estimated waits vary with major events and holiday visitors, and its 2026 advice called holiday long weekends the busiest periods and early mornings the best time to avoid queues. Game days and concerts on either side also bring extra traffic.
Some delays are in your hands:
- documents not ready, or a passenger without the right one;
- undeclared goods, or cannabis, which is illegal to carry across the border in either direction;
- unclear answers about where you are going and for how long.
Our pages on documents for entering Canada and documents for entering the USA cover the paperwork side.
How our dispatch desk uses wait times
Every cross-border booking at NiagaraFallsLimo.net is a normal trip: the chauffeur drives you over the bridge and stays with you through inspection. Before leaving for a cross-border pickup, the chauffeur checks the official readings for the direction of travel and decides between the bridges that suit the route, usually Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston or the Peace Bridge. Whirlpool is excluded for chauffeured cars because of its NEXUS-only and cars-only rules.
Two things we will not do. We will not promise how long a crossing takes, because nobody can. And we will not change the fare because a queue is long: the fare you saw in the booker before paying is the fare. When you book a departure that crosses the border, set a pickup time that leaves room for it; if you are unsure, the reservations desk can suggest one. For airport arrivals we track the flight, so a delayed landing does not mean a missed pickup. The cross-border car service page describes the whole service.
Planning around a flight at BUF or Pearson
The border sits between many Niagara visitors and their flights. Approximate road distances, by route planner, before any queue:
- Niagara Falls ON (Table Rock) to Buffalo Niagara International (BUF): about 42 km (26 mi), usually 40–45 minutes, plus the border.
- Niagara-on-the-Lake to BUF via Lewiston-Queenston: about 57 km (35 mi), usually 55–60 minutes, plus the border.
- Buffalo or BUF to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) via Lewiston-Queenston: roughly 165 km (102 mi), usually 2 h – 2 h 20 off-peak, plus the border; allow far more on a summer Friday.
- Niagara Falls ON to Niagara Falls International (IAG): about 14 km (9 mi), usually 20 minutes, plus the border.
Airlines set their own check-in deadlines, so work backwards from the deadline, not the departure time. Look at the CBP or CBSA reading at the time of day you will travel, a day or two before, to get a feel for it.
Ways to get across compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare | Hard to predict; drivers may not cross, so you may change cars at the border | Surge pricing | Car boot | Trips inside one country |
| Taxi | Drive plus border, if the cab crosses | Metered | Car boot | Short one-way trips |
| Bus or train | Timetable plus a group inspection of all passengers | Published seat fare | Usually generous | Solo travellers, no fixed arrival time |
| Walking (Rainbow Bridge only) | Walking time plus pedestrian inspection | Small pedestrian toll (into the US, collected on the Canadian side) | What you carry | Light day trips between the two Falls |
| Driving yourself | Drive plus queue; you choose the bridge | Fuel, toll into Canada, parking both sides | Whatever fits | Locals and road-trippers |
| Private chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | Drive plus queue, door to door, bridge chosen on live readings | Fixed fare via booker | Sized to the vehicle class | Airport runs, families, groups, business, late arrivals |
When another option is the better choice
If you are crossing on foot to see the American Falls for an afternoon, walk the Rainbow Bridge; it is the only Niagara crossing with a pedestrian walkway. If you are a NEXUS household in your own car, the Whirlpool Bridge is often the quickest choice during its hours. A solo traveller with no deadline can take the bus or the Amtrak Maple Leaf and accept the timetable.
A chauffeur is worth it when the border is one piece of a bigger puzzle: a flight deadline, a wedding schedule, a winery booking, three generations and a car seat, or six people and eight bags. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide sets out the trade-offs for every kind of Niagara trip.
Who relies on these readings with us
- Individuals: business travellers on tight meeting schedules between Buffalo and the Niagara Peninsula.
- Couples: a show or dinner across the river with a fixed start time.
- Families: a single vehicle with seats installed, so the whole family crosses together; see families.
- Groups: wedding parties, sports fans and tour groups who need everyone to arrive at once, often in an Executive Sprinter or group transportation.
How to book a cross-border trip in 3 steps
- Enter pickup and drop-off on either side of the river, with date, time and flight or train number.
- Choose a vehicle class and see its fixed all-in fare.
- Add passengers, bags, child seats, meet & greet and other extras, pay securely, and receive email confirmation.
Our how to book a limo guide explains the booker modes, including return trips and "By the hour". Cancellation counts from scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice free; 72 hours or less 10%; 48 hours or less 50%; 24 hours or less or no-show 100%.
Frequently asked questions
How often are Niagara border wait times updated?
CBP's feed says each border location updates its estimates hourly, and its app may show a time up to 60 minutes old. CBSA shows an "Updated" time stamp beside every crossing. The bridge commission updates Whirlpool hourly because it has no real-time feed. Always check the time stamp.
Which Niagara bridge has the shortest wait?
It changes through the day and by direction, so there is no permanent answer. Compare the live readings for your direction, then add the extra drive: the Rainbow Bridge is closest to the Falls, Lewiston-Queenston about 12 km north, and the Peace Bridge about 33 km south.
Does the border wait time include traffic getting to the bridge?
No. CBSA says its estimates do not include delays on roads leading to the crossing, and CBP measures the time to reach the primary inspection booth. Add approach traffic and a safety margin, especially before a flight.
What does "No delay" mean on the wait time page?
It means the agency estimates little or no queue at the inspection booths at the time shown. It does not cover the drive to the plaza, possible secondary inspection, or what will happen an hour later. Use it as a snapshot, not a forecast.
Is there an app for Niagara border wait times?
Yes. CBP publishes a free border wait times app for US-bound traffic, with lane-by-lane times and no registration. For Canada-bound traffic use the CBSA web table. The Peace Bridge authority also offers a mobile wait-time page.
What is the best time to cross the Niagara border?
CBSA's 2026 advice said early mornings are the best time to avoid wait times and that holiday long weekends are the busiest. Big events in Buffalo or Niagara also add traffic. Check the live figures before leaving rather than relying on a rule of thumb.
Will my chauffeur wait if the border queue is long?
Yes. Your chauffeur stays with the vehicle and with you through the queue and the inspection, and continues to your drop-off. The fixed fare does not change because of the length of the queue. We simply cannot promise how long the queue will be.
Can I check wait times for the Whirlpool Bridge?
Yes, but readings there are updated hourly by the bridge commission rather than in real time, and CBP's feed sometimes shows "Update Pending". Because the bridge is NEXUS-only, its queues work differently from the general lanes. The border crossing hub links each bridge guide.
