Niagara Falls in winter is a different place from the July version. The crowds thin, and the mist freezes onto the trees and railings along the gorge. Some attractions close until spring, but more stay open than most people think, and the season has its own events: the Winter Festival of Lights, the illumination starting before 5 pm, and icewine in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This guide from NiagaraFallsLimo.net explains what you can do between December and March, and why a heated, pre-booked car with a chauffeur who waits at the door matters more in January than in June. It is one of our Niagara travel guides.
Is Niagara Falls worth visiting in winter?
Yes. Niagara Falls in winter has frozen mist on the gorge, the free Winter Festival of Lights from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, year-round attractions such as Journey Behind the Falls, and icewine in Niagara-on-the-Lake, 23 km north. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives you between them in a heated car; book online in three steps.
What you give up is the boats and the cable car. What you gain is space at the railings and a landscape that looks carved out of ice.
Do the Falls freeze?
Not completely, and almost never. The water volume and its speed keep it moving even when the air is far below zero. What you see in a cold snap is a shell of ice and frozen spray building up on the rocks, along the edges and across the American Falls, while water keeps flowing underneath.
The one recorded stoppage happened in March 1848, when ice from Lake Erie jammed the source of the Niagara River and the Falls went quiet for about 30 hours. Since 1964 a floating ice boom has been placed each winter where the river leaves Lake Erie, between Buffalo and Fort Erie, to keep large ice floes from choking the river. Destination Niagara USA tells the story well in its piece on whether the Falls really freeze.
The practical advice: the best ice is usually after several days of hard cold, and the railings near Table Rock can be slick. Wear boots with grip.

Our Journey Behind the Falls page explains the drop-off at the Table Rock Welcome Centre.
The Winter Festival of Lights, 2026–27
The festival runs November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Displays are lit every night from 5 pm to midnight, holidays included, along more than 8 km of the Niagara Parkway, the Fallsview district and Lundy's Lane. It is free, with donations accepted at Dufferin Islands, and there are fireworks over the Falls at 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then nightly from December 18 to January 2. The Floral Showhouse's mosaiculture figures become lit displays for the festival too. Check routes and updates on the Winter Festival of Lights site.
The Parkway route is best seen slowly from a warm car with big windows, which is exactly what a chauffeured light tour is. Dufferin Islands is about 3 km from Fallsview. Our Winter Festival of Lights page has a suggested order, and our falls night tour combines the displays with the illuminated Falls.
The illumination starts early
The Falls are lit every night of the year. In November and December the lights come on at about 4:30 pm, so you can see the illumination before dinner. From January to March 11 they go off at 1 am; for the rest of the year, 2 am. The lights have been LED since 2016 and are run by the Niagara Falls Illumination Board, which has done the job since 1925. The Falls Illumination page has the full schedule.
Icewine in Niagara-on-the-Lake
Winter is the only season that makes icewine. Under VQA Ontario rules, the grapes must freeze naturally on the vine and be picked at minus 8 °C or colder, and the juice must reach at least 35 Brix. About 3 kg of Vidal grapes go into one 375 mL bottle. The VQA Ontario wine categories page sets out the standard.
The Niagara Icewine Festival is usually held in January and includes the Icewine Village on Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake over two weekends, with fire pits and ice carving. The 2027 dates were not published when we checked in October 2026; watch the Niagara Wine Festival site. Read our icewine guide and book a chauffeured wine tour for a tasting afternoon. There is no drinking in our vehicles; the tastings happen at the wineries.
Niagara-on-the-Lake's Old Town is about 23 km from Fallsview, usually 25 to 30 minutes on a clear day. The Shaw Festival's holiday shows run to December 23, 2026.
Indoor days: waterparks, casinos and dinners
Winter in Niagara Falls is good for families who want to swim indoors. Great Wolf Lodge at 3950 Victoria Avenue, about 5 km from Fallsview, has an indoor waterpark resort, and the Falls Avenue Resort has a 3-acre indoor waterpark connected to its hotels and to Clifton Hill. For adults, Fallsview Casino Resort and Casino Niagara (both 19+) run shows on the OLG Stage and in the Avalon Theatre through the season. Our Fallsview Casino Resort page covers show-night pickups, and our Fallsview hotels guide lists the towers with indoor connections.
The New York side in winter
Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year, and the American Falls is where icicles and frozen mist build up most visibly in a cold spell. Cave of the Winds runs year-round on Goat Island with timed tickets sold on site. Across the river in Buffalo, Canalside has skating in winter, about 37 km from Fallsview via the Peace Bridge.
Every passenger needs their own valid documents; see documents for entering the USA. We never promise a crossing time. Our cross-border car service explains how the chauffeur handles the bridge with you.
Getting around Niagara in winter
| Way to travel | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking | Slow on icy paths | Free | None | Short hops on the Fallsview ridge |
| WEGO bus | Waits at outdoor stops | Adult 24-hour pass $16 CAD (as of 2026) | Day bag | Budget hopping between Table Rock and hotels |
| Rideshare | Depends on cars nearby | Surge pricing in storms and after shows | Small | One short ride in town |
| Taxi | Rank wait in the cold | Metered | Trunk | A single trip back to the hotel |
| Driving yourself | Fast, plus clearing and parking the car | Fuel, tolls, parking at each stop | Full | Drivers comfortable on winter roads |
| Private chauffeur | Door to door, car stays warm | Fixed fare via booker | Full, child seats on request | Light tours, wine days, families, airport runs |
Walking is fine on the Fallsview ridge on a dry day, and the Falls Incline Railway is climate-controlled. A taxi is a sensible single ride home from a casino show. Where a pre-booked chauffeur clearly wins is the cold: waiting at an outdoor WEGO stop at 9 pm in January is the part of a winter trip people remember for the wrong reason. Add children, a winery afternoon, a crossing or a flight, and the case is stronger still. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide sets out the full comparison.
Winter flights and roads
Most winter visitors fly into Toronto Pearson, about 121 km (75 mi) from the Falls, usually 1 h 30 to 1 h 50 off-peak; allow more in snow. Buffalo Niagara International is about 42 km (26 mi) plus the bridge. Our desk tracks your flight, so a de-icing delay moves the pickup rather than starting a waiting clock you did not expect. See our Toronto Pearson to Niagara Falls transfer and Buffalo airport transfers.
Who a winter trip suits
Individuals get quiet railings and easy restaurant tables. Couples come for the lights and icewine; our page for couples visiting Niagara Falls has ideas for an anniversary weekend. Families use the waterparks and the Butterfly Conservatory, with child seats ready in the car. Groups ride the light festival together in a Sprinter or stretch SUV and keep everyone warm between stops.
How to book this in 3 steps
- Enter the trip. Your hotel, airport or address as pickup, the destination or "By the hour" for a light tour, plus date, time and flight number.
- Choose a vehicle. Every class shows its fixed all-in fare before payment; SUVs suit families with winter coats and bags.
- Finish the details. Passenger count, bags, child seats, meet and greet, any notes, then pay securely and receive your confirmation by email.

Frequently asked questions
Do the Falls freeze in winter?
No, not completely. The volume and speed of the water keep it moving, though ice and frozen mist build up along the edges and over the American Falls. The only recorded stoppage was in March 1848, when a Lake Erie ice jam stopped the flow for about 30 hours.
What is there to do in Niagara Falls in winter?
Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station tunnel, Niagara Takes Flight, the Butterfly Conservatory, the Floral Showhouse, the SkyWheel, the Skylon Tower, the casinos and the indoor waterparks. Add the Winter Festival of Lights until January 10, 2027, and icewine tastings in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
When is the Winter Festival of Lights?
The 2026–27 festival runs November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027. Displays are lit nightly from 5 pm to midnight, and fireworks go off at 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then nightly from December 18 to January 2. Entry is free, with donations accepted at Dufferin Islands.
Is Maid of the Mist open in winter?
No. The 2026 Maid of the Mist season ends November 8, and the Canadian Niagara City Cruises boats also run only from April to November. The opening date each spring depends on ice. In winter, Journey Behind the Falls is the way to get close to the base of the Horseshoe Falls.
Is it safe to drive to Niagara Falls in winter?
The QEW and Highway 405 are maintained through the winter, but snow and ice can slow them and the bridge approaches. If you would rather not drive on winter roads in an unfamiliar country, a chauffeur in a heated, licensed and commercially insured vehicle takes that off your list.
When is the best time to see the Falls iced over?
After several consecutive days of hard cold, usually in January or February. The ice builds on the rocks and edges near the American Falls and along the gorge. Visit in daylight for the ice and come back after 4:30 pm in November and December, or a little later in January, for the illumination.
When is the Niagara Icewine Festival?
It is usually held in January, with the Icewine Village on Queen Street in Niagara-on-the-Lake over two weekends. The 2027 dates had not been published on the festival's site when we checked in October 2026, so confirm before you book a hotel.
Can we cross to the American side in winter?
Yes. Niagara Falls State Park is open 365 days a year and Cave of the Winds runs year-round. The chauffeur crosses with you; every passenger must carry their own valid documents. Crossing times vary, so build in a margin.
