NEXUS is the joint Canada–United States trusted traveller program, and the Niagara crossings are one of the places it pays off most often. There is a NEXUS-only bridge, dedicated NEXUS lanes on two others, and a tourist bridge with none at all. There is also a rule about passengers that changes everything for families, groups and chauffeured cars. This guide explains how to use a NEXUS card at Niagara, how to apply, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net handles trips when some or all of you are members.
Is a NEXUS card worth it for Niagara crossings?
For frequent crossers, usually yes: NEXUS gives access to the NEXUS-only Whirlpool Rapids Bridge (7 a.m.–11 p.m.) and to NEXUS lanes at Lewiston-Queenston and the Peace Bridge, but only when everyone in the vehicle, driver included, is a member. Membership is US$120 for five years. NiagaraFallsLimo.net crosses with members and non-members alike; book online.
If you cross once a year on holiday, the general lane is fine. If you cross monthly, or travel by air between Canada and the US, the card earns its keep.
What NEXUS is
NEXUS is run jointly by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for low-risk, pre-approved travellers. In verified terms:
- Fee: a non-refundable US$120 application processing fee; children under 18 pay nothing.
- Term: five years.
- Benefits entering Canada: dedicated vehicle lanes at 18 land crossings, plus kiosks and eGates at major airports.
- Benefits entering the US: dedicated lanes at 16 land crossings, Global Entry kiosks at eight Canadian airports including Toronto Pearson, and TSA PreCheck lines in many US airports.
- Identity: CBP accepts the NEXUS card as a travel document at US land crossings for US and Canadian citizens, and CBSA accepts it for entry into Canada.

The rule that matters most: everyone in the vehicle
CBSA's instructions on how to use NEXUS are blunt. To use NEXUS, everyone accompanying you must also be a member, regardless of their age. The driver is responsible for making sure everyone in the vehicle is a member and is carrying their card. Non-members cannot use the dedicated lane.
The consequences are practical:
- A member couple travelling with a non-member friend uses the general lane.
- A member family whose newest child has not yet been enrolled uses the general lane.
- A chauffeured car, taxi or rideshare qualifies only if the driver is a member as well.
NEXUS in a chauffeured car
Because the driver counts as an occupant, a chauffeured vehicle can use a NEXUS lane, or the Whirlpool Bridge, only when the chauffeur and every passenger are members carrying their cards. We do not promise a NEXUS-holding chauffeur, so plan on the general lanes. The Whirlpool Bridge is also listed for autos only, while limousines are listed at the Rainbow and Lewiston-Queenston bridges, so NiagaraFallsLimo.net routes chauffeured crossings over Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston or the Peace Bridge.
Your card still helps. It is a valid entry document in both directions, it confirms your status to the officer, and it lets you skip airport lines on the flight that brought you to Toronto or Buffalo. The cross-border car service page describes how our crossings run.
Applying for NEXUS
The process, from CBSA's program pages:
- Apply online through the Trusted Traveller Programs system, which CBP operates, and pay the US$120 fee. Your information is shared with CBSA.
- Wait for conditional approval of the first part of the application.
- Book an interview at an enrolment centre and complete it in person to finalize membership. The Peace Bridge authority lists NEXUS enrolment offices at 10 Central Avenue, Fort Erie, and at 1 Peace Bridge Plaza, Buffalo, and notes that applicants meet both CBSA and CBP on their respective sides.
- Receive your card and activate it as instructed.
Two details for families. Each family member, including minors, needs their own appointment, and a minor must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other adult. A letter of consent is needed if only one custodial parent attends, or if someone other than a parent attends, unless that adult has sole custody or is the only person named on the birth certificate.
One deadline change: CBSA says a temporary five-year window to schedule the interview after conditional approval ends on April 1, 2027. Applicants approved on or after that date must schedule within two years.
At the booth with NEXUS
When every occupant is a member and the lane is open:
- have each person's card ready to present or scan as directed; at the Whirlpool Bridge each card is scanned at a reader before the inspection booth;
- follow the lane lights and the officer's instructions;
- answer questions as you would in any lane.
CBSA lists situations where you may not use NEXUS at all, including carrying CA$10,000 or more in currency or monetary instruments, commercial goods, or goods that are restricted, controlled or prohibited or need a permit, such as firearms. Cannabis remains illegal to carry across the border in either direction. If any of these apply, use a general lane.
CBSA also advises members to always carry a passport and/or proof of permanent residence in case they need to prove citizenship or status.
Children and shared custody
Children are members in their own right, free under 18, and need their own card for the NEXUS lane. For a child in shared custody, CBSA says to present the child's NEXUS card together with custody documents and a letter of permission from the absent parent or guardian that includes contact addresses and phone numbers. If you are not the child's custodial parent or guardian, carry the child's identification and a letter of permission from the parents. Our page on crossing with children explains consent letters in detail.
NEXUS toll accounts on NFBC bridges
The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lets members link a toll balance to their NEXUS card. Its NEXUS toll program allows you to enrol your card at the kiosk at the Whirlpool Bridge with a minimum of $5.00, then top up online. Tolls are charged only into Canada; the passenger-car rate since May 1, 2025 is US$6.00 or CA$8.50. When you replace a card, the commission transfers your balance, which can take up to two weeks.
Global Entry and the Whirlpool Bridge
Global Entry is the US-only cousin of NEXUS. At Niagara, the commission permits Global Entry on the Whirlpool Bridge for US-bound crossings only. Heading into Canada, Global Entry members without NEXUS use a general lane on another bridge. All NEXUS members receive Global Entry benefits, so NEXUS is the better card if you cross in both directions.
Your options as a NEXUS member
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Own car, all occupants NEXUS | Drive plus NEXUS queue when lanes are open | Fuel, toll into Canada (as of 2026 US$6 / CA$8.50 NFBC), parking | Whatever fits | NEXUS households crossing often |
| Own car, mixed party | Drive plus general queue | Same as above | Whatever fits | Members travelling with guests |
| Rideshare | Uncertain; many drivers do not cross | Surge pricing | Car boot | Trips inside one country |
| Taxi | Drive plus general queue, if the cab crosses | Metered | Car boot | Short one-way trips |
| Private chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | Drive plus general queue, door to door | Fixed fare via booker | Sized to the vehicle class | Airport runs, groups, families, evenings out |
When a NEXUS lane in your own car is the better choice
If you live in the region, hold NEXUS with everyone you travel with, and are driving yourself during lane hours, your own car is the efficient answer for errands, dinners and short visits. That is exactly what the Whirlpool Bridge exists for.
A chauffeur is the better answer when the party is mixed, when you are flying, when you want a drink at dinner and nobody should drive afterwards, or when luggage and car seats are part of the trip. A late landing at Buffalo Niagara International followed by a drive to a Fallsview hotel is a typical example. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide lays out the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions
How much does NEXUS cost?
CBSA lists a non-refundable application processing fee of US$120 for a five-year membership, as of 2026. Children under 18 pay no fee, though each child still needs their own application and interview.
Can I use the NEXUS lane if my passengers are not members?
No. CBSA says everyone accompanying you must also be a member, regardless of age, and the driver is responsible for checking. If one person lacks a card, the whole vehicle uses the general lane.
Can a limo use the NEXUS lane at Niagara?
Only if the chauffeur and every passenger are NEXUS members carrying their cards. In practice chauffeured cars use the general lanes, and the NEXUS-only Whirlpool Bridge is listed for autos only. NiagaraFallsLimo.net routes chauffeured trips over Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston or the Peace Bridge.
Which Niagara bridges have NEXUS lanes?
The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is NEXUS-only in both directions from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Lewiston-Queenston has one NEXUS lane each way with set hours, and the Peace Bridge has NEXUS lanes in both directions. The Rainbow Bridge has no NEXUS lane listed.
Where can I do a NEXUS interview near Niagara Falls?
The Peace Bridge authority lists NEXUS enrolment offices at 10 Central Avenue in Fort Erie and at 1 Peace Bridge Plaza in Buffalo, and says applicants meet CBSA and CBP on their respective sides. Book the appointment through the Trusted Traveller Programs system after conditional approval.
Is a NEXUS card enough to cross the border?
CBP accepts it as a WHTI document for US and Canadian citizens at land crossings, and CBSA accepts it for entry into Canada. CBSA still advises carrying a passport or proof of permanent residence in case you need to prove status.
Does Global Entry work at the Niagara bridges?
Only at the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, and only for travel into the United States. Into Canada, Global Entry members without NEXUS use the general lanes of another bridge. NEXUS members receive Global Entry benefits automatically.
Do children need NEXUS to cross with NEXUS parents?
To use a NEXUS lane, yes: every occupant must be a member. Children under 18 join without a fee but need their own card. Without one, the family crosses in the general lane with ordinary documents. The border crossing hub links every related guide.
