Families in Amherst and Williamsville live closer to the Canadian side of Niagara Falls than most Toronto suburbs do. A Saturday at the Horseshoe Falls is an easy idea; the friction comes from loading three children, two car seats and a folder of documents into a car, then queuing at a bridge plaza with everyone asking how long it will take.

This guide is for suburban Buffalo families planning that day. NiagaraFallsLimo.net picks up from homes in Amherst, Williamsville, Getzville, East Amherst and the University at Buffalo North Campus area, and the timings below are drawn from that run.

How far is Amherst, NY from Niagara Falls, Ontario?

From central Amherst to the Fallsview hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario is about 36 km (23 mi), and from Williamsville about 40 km (25 mi), usually 35–45 minutes via I-290, I-190 and the Rainbow Bridge, plus border time. NiagaraFallsLimo.net collects you at home; the online booker shows your fixed fare.

The rest of this page covers the route, the children's paperwork and how to keep a family day relaxed.

The route a chauffeur takes from the northern suburbs

From Amherst and Williamsville the natural line is west, not south through the city:

  1. I-290 west from Amherst or the Williamsville interchanges toward Tonawanda.
  2. I-190 north across Grand Island. The Grand Island bridges use cashless tolling, so nobody stops at a booth.
  3. The Niagara Scenic Parkway into downtown Niagara Falls, New York.
  4. The Rainbow Bridge into Canada, landing at the foot of Clifton Hill.

That route keeps you off downtown Buffalo streets entirely. In OpenStreetMap routing it measures about 36 km (23 mi) from the University at Buffalo North Campus and about 40 km (25 mi) from Main Street in Williamsville to the Fallsview district.

When another bridge makes sense

If the Rainbow Bridge shows a long queue, the chauffeur has two options. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, reached by continuing north on I-190, adds about 13 km from Amherst and often moves well for cars. The Peace Bridge, reached through the city, adds about 20 km from Amherst. Live data from the bridge operators and CBSA decides it on the day; the sibling post Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada by private car explains how we compare crossings.

The Rainbow Bridge page shows where cars queue on the New York side, and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission's bridge guide lists which vehicles each crossing accepts.

Kids' documents, explained once

This is where families lose the most time at the booth, usually because a document is packed in a bag in the trunk or the right letter was never written. Two inspections are involved: Canada on the way in, the United States on the way home.

Going into Canada

The Canada Border Services Agency says every traveller of any age must carry acceptable identification, and when a minor under 18 is travelling, you should carry the child's identification and copies of any legal custody documents. For US citizen children, a passport is simplest, though CBSA accepts other proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate.

The consent letter

Canada does not legally require a consent letter, but Global Affairs Canada recommends one for any child under 19 travelling without both parents, whether with one parent, grandparents, an aunt or a friend's family. The government's consent letter page says it should be signed by each parent who is not travelling, ideally witnessed by a notary, and carried as an original. Officers may ask for it, and not having it can delay the crossing.

Coming home to the United States

Under US Customs and Border Protection's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, US and Canadian citizen children under 16 need only a birth certificate (original, photocopy or certified copy) or other proof of citizenship at a land crossing. The limit rises to under 19 when they travel with a school, religious or other youth group. Adults still need a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted-traveller card.

A practical routine

  • Put every passport, birth certificate and letter in one folder, carried by one adult.
  • Hand the folder over only when the officer asks; answer for yourself and let teenagers answer simple questions about themselves.
  • Leave cannabis products at home, including CBD. They are illegal to carry across in either direction.

Our crossing with children page and the sibling post on consent letters and IDs for children go into custody cases and blended families.

Picking up at home: what to tell us

Suburban pickups are easy, but a few details help the chauffeur arrive at the right door at the right minute:

  • The exact address and any quirks. Townhouse complexes and newer subdivisions off Transit Road or Millersport Highway can have look-alike streets; a unit number or a note such as "white garage, second driveway" saves a loop.
  • Where to load. A driveway is ideal. If you are on a narrow street with parked cars, say so and the chauffeur will stop where the doors open safely on the kerb side.
  • Who is coming. Give the final head count, including toddlers, so the right vehicle and the right number of seats arrive.
  • Mid-route stops. Picking up grandparents in Tonawanda or a cousin near the University at Buffalo is simple if you add it as a stop in the booker rather than mentioning it on the day.

If you are travelling on a weekday morning, leave a little extra time: I-290 carries commuter traffic toward the I-190 interchange.

Car seats and the NEXUS question

Seats for every child

Ontario sets out child-seat stages by weight and height: rear-facing seats up to 9 kg, forward-facing seats from 9 to 18 kg, and booster seats for children under 8 who weigh 18–36 kg and are under 145 cm, according to the province's child car seat guidance. Child, toddler and booster seats are options in the booker; tell us each child's age and the chauffeur arrives with the seats fitted. You can also bring your own.

Does your NEXUS card help in a hired car?

Only if everyone in the vehicle, including the chauffeur, holds a NEXUS card. CBSA's rule is that every occupant must be a member to use a NEXUS lane or the NEXUS-only Whirlpool Rapids Bridge. In practice, a family in a hired car uses the general lanes. The sibling post NEXUS card holders: does it help in a hired car? explains the exceptions, and our NEXUS and trusted travellers page covers the programme.

Shaping a family day on the Canadian side

The Rainbow Bridge drops you near Clifton Hill, so most family days start there or at the brink of the Horseshoe Falls. A few planning notes:

For the trip home, aim to leave the Canadian side before the youngest is asleep on your shoulder. Southbound queues into the United States build on summer evenings and holiday Mondays, and US entry rules apply to everyone, so keep the document folder within reach rather than packed with souvenirs.

If the car stays with you all day, the booker's "By the hour" mode lets the chauffeur move you between the falls, lunch and an indoor stop if the weather turns.

The honest verdict. Many Amherst families drive themselves, and with a calm adult at the wheel and documents in order, that is perfectly reasonable. A taxi or rideshare is the weak choice here: car seats are not assured and cross-border trips are often refused. A pre-booked SUV wins on the days when you want both parents free, need several fitted seats, or plan a long day ending after dark. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide has the wider comparison.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Home to the Falls. Enter your Amherst or Williamsville address and your Canadian destination, with the date and pickup time. Add the return.
  2. Choose the vehicle. A Standard or Executive SUV suits most families; an Executive Sprinter takes two families. Each class shows its fixed fare.
  3. Add the children. Note each child's age, choose child, toddler or booster seats, add strollers as bags, pay securely, and wait for the email confirmation.

Book a family car to the Falls

Who this suits

Families are the heart of this route, and our families page explains how we set up seats and stops. Couples from the northern suburbs often use the same pickup for a dinner in Fallsview without anyone driving home. Individuals visiting relatives in Amherst find it an easy way to see the Canadian side. Groups, such as two or three neighbouring families, share a Sprinter and cross together. For trips from farther north in Niagara County, see the sibling post on Lockport and Niagara County riders.

If relatives are flying in, Buffalo Niagara International sits just south of Williamsville, and our Buffalo airport transfer page explains how the chauffeur tracks the flight and meets them in arrivals before the family heads north together. The core Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada route page covers city pickups if relatives join you from downtown.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from Williamsville to Niagara Falls, Canada?

About 40 km (25 mi), usually 35–45 minutes via I-290, I-190 and the Rainbow Bridge, before border time. The queue at the bridge varies by day and hour and cannot be promised, so build in a margin for holiday weekends.

Do my kids need passports to visit Niagara Falls, Canada?

Not always. US and Canadian citizen children under 16 may return to the US with a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, and CBSA accepts proof of citizenship going in. A passport for each child is still the simplest option, and carry a consent letter if either parent is not travelling.

Who should sign a consent letter for a child?

Each parent or legal decision-maker who is not on the trip. Global Affairs Canada recommends one for any child under 19 not travelling with both parents and suggests having it witnessed by a notary. Carry the signed original.

Can you provide car seats?

Yes. Child, toddler and booster seats are booker options. Add each child's age when you book and the chauffeur arrives with the right seats installed. Families may also bring their own seats if they prefer.

Can we use the NEXUS lane in a hired car?

Only if every person in the vehicle, including the chauffeur, is a NEXUS member carrying their card. Otherwise the car uses the general lanes. The NEXUS-only Whirlpool Rapids Bridge follows the same rule.

What if a child gets car-sick or needs a stop?

Tell the chauffeur. The route is short, mostly highway and has places to pull off safely in Tonawanda and Niagara Falls, New York before the bridge. Once you join the bridge queue there is no stopping, so a quick break before the plaza is the better plan.

Is it better to cross at the Rainbow Bridge or the Peace Bridge from Amherst?

Usually the Rainbow Bridge, because the I-290 and I-190 route avoids downtown Buffalo and lands near the Falls. The Peace Bridge adds about 20 km from Amherst, so it is a fallback when the Rainbow queue is much longer.
