People in Lockport can see the escarpment from their kitchen windows and the Canadian side from half the bluffs in Niagara County, yet the trip across the river still feels like an expedition. That is the bridge talking. The drive from Lockport, NY to Niagara Falls, Ontario is short, but it includes an international border, a toll, a queue nobody can forecast, and, on the way home, a second inspection. For a dinner reservation, a Shaw Festival curtain or a flight out of Toronto, that uncertainty is exactly what a pre-booked car from NiagaraFallsLimo.net is for. This guide is written for locals and for visitors who chose Lockport as a base for the Erie Canal.

How far is Lockport, NY from Niagara Falls, Canada?

Lockport, New York to the Fallsview district of Niagara Falls, Ontario is about 37 km (23 mi), usually 35–40 minutes plus the border queue. Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 45 km (28 mi), roughly 45 minutes via the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. NiagaraFallsLimo.net quotes either ride at a fixed fare in its booker.

For context, Lockport to Buffalo Niagara International is about 27 km (17 mi), and Lockport to Toronto Pearson is about 150 km (93 mi), around 2 hours off-peak plus the bridge.

Pickups around Lockport and the county

Your chauffeur can collect you anywhere with an address: a house in Lockport, Pendleton or Cambria, a farm road out toward Newfane, or the canal district downtown. The City of Lockport's visitor page describes the Lockport Locks Heritage District around the restored Flight of Five, with the Erie Canal Discovery Center, Canal Street and Locks 34 and 35 on today's canal. Those make easy, recognizable meeting points for visitors who have spent the morning on the water.

Wherever you start, book the pickup a little earlier than feels necessary for an evening event in Canada. The drive is short; the queue is the variable, and it is the one thing no chauffeur or app can schedule.

Which bridge from Niagara County

The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission runs three crossings, and from Lockport the choice usually falls between two.

The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is the natural route for Niagara-on-the-Lake, Queenston and the north end of the Parkway. It has 10 car lanes into Canada, and a NEXUS lane runs daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the Commission's bridge guide. It is also the only Commission bridge that takes commercial trucks, so weekday mornings can be busy. Our Lewiston-Queenston Bridge page covers its quirks.

The Rainbow Bridge lands you by Clifton Hill, a few minutes from the Fallsview hotels and the casino, which makes it the shorter choice for an evening at the Falls.

The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is reserved for NEXUS members, and every person in the car, including the chauffeur, must hold a card. For most bookings it is not an option; see NEXUS and trusted travellers for why.

Your chauffeur checks the live wait times before choosing. The Canada Border Services Agency publishes estimates for traffic heading into Canada on its border wait times page, and our border wait times guide explains how to read the different feeds.

Why Niagara County riders cross

The reasons we hear most from Lockport and the surrounding towns:

  • The Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake. The 2026 season runs to 23 December, with holiday shows in November and December. A car means you are not hunting for parking on Queen Street ten minutes before curtain. Our Shaw Festival page has the theatre details.
  • A Fallsview dinner or casino night. Fallsview Casino Resort sits above the Horseshoe Falls, and guests must be 19 or older. Being driven home means nobody watches the clock or the wine list.
  • Weddings and parties in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Guests from the US side often book a car for the evening so the drive home and the bridge are someone else's problem.
  • Flights from Toronto Pearson. Some international routes are easier from Toronto. At about 150 km, the ride is a little over two hours with the bridge, and you avoid parking a car for a week.
  • Wine country. Tasting afternoons along the Niagara Parkway and Niagara Stone Road, with no one needing to drive afterwards.

Timing an evening across the river

Because the bridge is the one part you cannot schedule, we suggest planning backwards from the fixed time. Here is how a typical theatre evening in Niagara-on-the-Lake works from a Lockport front door:

TimeWhat happens
5:30 p.m.Chauffeur arrives; documents checked before anyone gets in
5:35 p.m.Leave Lockport toward Lewiston
about 6:00 p.m.Join the queue at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge; length varies
6:15–6:45 p.m.Through Canadian inspection, then the Niagara Parkway north
6:45–7:15 p.m.Arrive in the Old Town for an early dinner
8:00 p.m.Curtain
after the showCar waiting at the agreed corner; back across the bridge to Lockport

The same logic works for a Fallsview reservation via the Rainbow Bridge: leave about an hour and a quarter before the table time and you will rarely be late. If the queue turns out short, you have time for a walk along the rail above the Horseshoe Falls, which is lit every night of the year, before you sit down.

Holidays, events and winter

Some days need more slack than others. The Canada Border Services Agency names holiday long weekends as the busiest periods for border traffic, and Canada Day, the Fourth of July and both countries' Thanksgiving weekends are the usual pinch points, so leave earlier than you normally would on those dates. Big evenings on the Canadian side add to it: summer fireworks nights, and the Winter Festival of Lights from mid-November into January. In winter, the Parkway and the escarpment roads around Lockport can be icy after dark; a chauffeur who drives them daily is worth more in February than in June.

Visitors basing themselves in Lockport

Some travellers choose Lockport for the canal: the lock cruises, the Discovery Center and the quieter streets. The visitor page notes that the State Park at Niagara Falls is about 20 miles away, and a free Discover Niagara Shuttle runs between the Falls and Lockport in summer. That shuttle is a good way to reach the American falls. It does not cross into Canada, and that is where a booked car fills the gap: a morning at Table Rock and the Horseshoe Falls, lunch in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and back to Lockport for dinner by the canal. Each passenger carries their own documents; our cross-border car service page explains how we run these trips.

Private chauffeur35–40 min plus bridgeFixed fare via the bookerSedan to SUVEvenings, theatre, flights, wine days

Verdict: for a daytime visit to the American falls, the summer shuttle or your own car is the sensible choice, and a local taxi is fine for US-side hops. For an evening in Canada, especially one with wine, theatre or a fixed reservation, or for a Pearson flight, book the chauffeur: the car waits, the driver knows both bridges, and nobody has to drive home after dinner. Our guide to chauffeur, taxi and rideshare has more on the differences.

Who this suits

Individuals are the most common Lockport riders: a professional heading to a meeting in St. Catharines, a traveller catching a Pearson flight, a single theatre-goer who does not want to drive the Parkway at night. Our individuals page explains how solo bookings work. Couples book the Shaw evening or an anniversary dinner. Families cross for Clifton Hill and the boats, often with child seats added in the booker. Groups heading to a wedding or a birthday in Niagara-on-the-Lake can share an Executive Sprinter for up to 12 guests.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter the trip. Your Lockport or Niagara County address as pickup, and the restaurant, theatre, hotel or terminal as drop-off. Add the date and time, plus a flight number for Pearson.
  2. Choose a vehicle. The booker shows each class with its fixed, all-in fare. For an evening out and back, book the return as a second trip or use the "By the hour" mode.
  3. Add details and pay. Passengers, bags and any extras, then pay securely. The confirmation arrives by email.

Coming home: the US-bound bridge

The return crossing is a US inspection, and US Customs and Border Protection asks each passenger for an accepted document: for US citizens, a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card, as set out under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative. Keep any bottles bought at the wineries together and declare them. If you live near the Lewiston crossing, our post on Lewiston to Niagara-on-the-Lake covers the shortest hop of all. Starting farther south, in the Buffalo suburbs? See Amherst and Williamsville pickups, and if you simply want to see the other falls, read crossing just to see the other side.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive from Lockport to Niagara Falls, Ontario?

About 35–40 minutes for the roughly 37 km (23 mi), before the border. The queue at the bridge is the unpredictable part, so allow extra time for anything with a fixed start, such as a show or a dinner booking.

Which bridge should I use from Lockport?

For Niagara-on-the-Lake and Queenston, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. For Clifton Hill, Fallsview and the casino, usually the Rainbow Bridge. A chauffeur checks live wait times and may switch if one is clearly faster.

Can I take an Uber from Lockport to Canada?

You can try, but many rideshare drivers will not accept a trip into Canada, and an airport on the US side warns passengers that rideshares may not cross the border. A pre-booked cross-border car avoids that uncertainty.

How far is Lockport from Toronto Pearson airport?

About 150 km (93 mi), usually around 2 hours off-peak plus the bridge. Many Niagara County residents use Pearson for international flights and book a car rather than leave their own in long-term parking.

What documents do I need to cross from Lockport into Canada?

The Canada Border Services Agency recommends a valid passport for US citizens, though it accepts other proof of citizenship such as an enhanced driver's licence. You will need an accepted travel document to return to the US. Each passenger carries their own.

Is there a toll on the way to Canada from Lockport?

Yes, at the bridge. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission collects tolls only on traffic entering Canada; returning to the United States is free. When you book with NiagaraFallsLimo.net, the booker shows one fixed, all-in fare for your trip before you pay, so you know the full cost of the evening in advance rather than adding it up at the booth.

Can a chauffeur wait while we are at the theatre in Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Yes. Book the evening in "By the hour" mode and the car stays with you through the show and dinner, then drives you home across the bridge. Alternatively, book two separate trips if you prefer a fixed drop-off and pickup.
