Boston to Niagara Falls: Fly to Buffalo and Let a Driver Handle the Border

A Friday at 4 p.m. in the Back Bay, and the plan is a weekend at the Falls. Searches for Boston to Niagara Falls tend to start with a map that shows the Massachusetts Turnpike running almost straight to Buffalo, and a quiet sinking feeling when the drive time appears. Logan to the Horseshoe Falls is about 755 km (469 mi) by road. For a two-night trip, that is a lot of a short holiday spent in a car. The better plan, for most couples, is a nonstop flight to Buffalo and a chauffeur from NiagaraFallsLimo.net who takes it from there, including the part most people worry about: the border.

How do you get from Boston to Niagara Falls the fastest?

Fly nonstop from Boston Logan to Buffalo Niagara International (BUF), then ride about 43 km (27 mi), roughly 45 minutes plus the bridge, to Niagara Falls, Ontario. Driving the I-90 corridor is about 755 km (469 mi), 8 to 9 hours with stops. NiagaraFallsLimo.net's booker quotes the BUF transfer at a fixed fare.

Buffalo's airport lists Boston nonstops on three airlines, American, Delta and JetBlue, on its commercial carriers page. With that many options, it is usually possible to leave after work on Friday and fly home on Sunday evening.

What the meet and greet at Buffalo looks like

You walk off the jet bridge, follow the signs to baggage claim, and your chauffeur is waiting with a name board. That is the meet and greet option, and it is worth adding for a late Friday arrival when you would rather not search the kerb for a car in the dark.

A few details make it work:

  • Flight tracking. Enter your flight number when you book. If the Boston departure slips by 40 minutes, the pickup time follows the real landing.
  • Bags. A Standard Sedan carries up to three passengers and two large bags. For a couple with one case each and a garment bag, it is plenty. Choose the Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class for two people and two bags if you prefer something more formal.
  • The walk to the car. The chauffeur takes the cases and leads you out, so you are not reading signs after a long week.

Our Buffalo Niagara airport transfer page explains the pickup and the route options from the terminal.

Letting the driver handle the border: who does what

The phrase "the driver handles the border" needs a precise meaning, because some things only you can do.

What your chauffeur does. Chooses the bridge based on live queues and your hotel: the Rainbow Bridge for Fallsview and Clifton Hill, or the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge for Niagara-on-the-Lake. Drives the queue, pulls up to the booth, collects your passports and hands them over with their own, and answers the routine questions about the vehicle and the trip.

What you do. Carry your own valid documents; for US citizens, a passport is the simplest choice. Answer honestly if the officer asks you anything directly. Know what you are bringing, including any wine you plan to take home later.

What nobody can do. Promise how long the crossing will take. Queues build on holiday Fridays and summer afternoons, and the officer decides who goes to secondary inspection.

This is also why a pre-booked car beats an app for the Canadian side. Plenty of rideshare drivers will not accept a trip into Canada, and the Niagara Falls International airport tells passengers plainly that rideshare services may not cross the border. Read can you Uber across the Niagara border for the full picture, and our cross-border car service page for how we run these trips.

Fallsview or Niagara-on-the-Lake: where Boston couples stay

The choice shapes the weekend more than any other decision.

Fallsview puts you above the Horseshoe Falls with the lights out the window at night. It suits couples who want the spectacle, a casino evening, and dinner with a view. The ride from BUF is the shorter one, about 43 km.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is the quieter alternative, a 19th-century town on Lake Ontario with inns, gardens, wineries and the Shaw Festival. From Buffalo airport it is about 58 km (36 mi), roughly an hour via the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Our Niagara-on-the-Lake inns guide covers the Prince of Wales, Queen's Landing, the Pillar and Post and others. If you want both, stay in town and book a chauffeured evening at the Falls; the two are about 20–25 km apart along the Niagara Parkway.

A Boston couple's weekend, season by season

Late autumn and early winter. The Winter Festival of Lights runs from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 along the Parkway, Fallsview and Lundy's Lane, free, with fireworks at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from November 14, then nightly from December 18 to January 2, according to the festival site. In Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Shaw Festival's holiday productions run through 23 December 2026; check the Shaw Festival for performances and tickets.

Summer. The nightly 10 p.m. fireworks over the Falls ran from mid-May to mid-October in 2026, and the boats run from spring into the fall. Book dinner reservations early; July and August evenings fill up.

Any season. Wine country is open year-round. Book a chauffeured tasting afternoon so neither of you drives; our vehicles are alcohol-free by law, but the wine stays at the winery or travels home sealed in your bag. If the weekend is an anniversary or a proposal, our anniversary and proposal limo page shows how we help plan the timing.

If you would rather drive the Pike

The road route is straightforward: the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) west to the New York State Thruway, past Albany, Syracuse and Rochester, then I-290 and I-190 through Buffalo to the river. About 755 km (469 mi), and realistically 8 to 9 hours with stops. It suits a long stay with a car, or a road-trip couple. Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited also lists Boston on its route and stops at Buffalo-Depew, an option for travellers who want to avoid both flying and driving. For a midway stop, our post on Albany to Niagara Falls by private car covers the Thruway leg in detail.

Getting home on Sunday without watching the clock

The return is where a weekend can unravel, because the US-bound inspection at the bridge is the one part of the journey nobody can schedule. Sunday afternoons in summer and the last day of a long weekend are the slow times, and the Canada Border Services Agency names holiday long weekends as the busiest periods for border traffic.

A few habits make the last morning calm:

  • Book the return pickup when you book the arrival. The time is then fixed, and you are not arranging a car from the hotel lobby.
  • Leave a generous buffer. Fallsview to Buffalo airport is about 43 km, roughly 45 minutes of driving, but add the bridge queue and your airline's check-in advice on top. From Niagara-on-the-Lake, plan around an hour of driving via Lewiston.
  • Check live waits before you leave. US Customs and Border Protection publishes estimated waits for each bridge, and your chauffeur watches them too, switching bridges if one is clearly faster.
  • Keep purchases easy to show. Bottles from wineries and anything from the shops should be packed together, with receipts, in case the officer asks.

If your Sunday flight is very early, consider staying the last night on the American side, or simply leave the hotel earlier than feels necessary; an hour at the gate is better than a missed flight.

Verdict: if you are booked into a hotel in Niagara Falls, New York, and travelling light, a taxi from Buffalo airport is fine. For any Canadian-side hotel, the pre-booked chauffeur from BUF is the right tool: one fixed fare, one driver who knows both bridges, and nobody reading signs at the border at 11 p.m. Our guide to chauffeur, taxi and rideshare explains the differences in more depth.

Who this suits

Couples are the heart of this route, and the fly-in weekend is built for them. Individuals flying in for business at Buffalo or Niagara get a quiet sedan and a fixed fare. Families from Greater Boston can do the same trip with an SUV and child seats ready at arrivals. Groups, such as wedding parties flying in for a Niagara-on-the-Lake ceremony, can be met by a Sprinter or several cars timed to the same flight. Our couples page has more ideas for two.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Flight and hotel. Pickup at Buffalo Niagara International with your Boston flight number; drop-off at your Fallsview hotel or Niagara-on-the-Lake inn.
  2. Car. Each class shows its fixed fare. A Standard Sedan or Mercedes-Benz E-Class suits most couples.
  3. Finishing touches. Add meet and greet, note any special occasion, pay securely and keep the confirmation email. Booking the Sunday return at the same time saves a step later.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Niagara Falls from Boston?

About 755 km (469 mi) by road from Boston to Niagara Falls, Ontario, almost all of it on I-90: the Massachusetts Turnpike, then the New York State Thruway. Plan on 8 to 9 hours with stops. By air, Buffalo Niagara International is about 43 km from the Canadian falls.

Which airlines fly from Boston to Buffalo?

Buffalo Niagara International lists nonstop Boston service on American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways. Check each airline for current days and times.

Is Niagara Falls a good weekend trip from Boston?

Yes, if you fly. A Friday evening flight to Buffalo, two nights at the Falls or in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and a Sunday flight home leaves almost two full days on the ground. Driving both ways would use most of that time on the road.

Does the chauffeur go through customs with us?

The chauffeur drives you through the Canadian inspection booth and stays with the car. Everyone remains in the vehicle unless an officer asks otherwise. Each passenger must carry their own valid documents, and officers may ask anyone in the car a question.

Can we bring wine back to Boston from Niagara?

You can carry wine home, but declare it to US Customs when you cross back. CBP allows one litre of alcohol in the duty-free exemption for travellers 21 and over after 48 hours abroad; anything more may be dutiable, and state limits also apply.

Can we book a chauffeur for a whole day in wine country?

Yes. Choose the "By the hour" mode in the booker and the car and chauffeur stay with you between wineries, restaurants and the Falls. Nobody in the car drinks while travelling, and nobody needs to drive after a tasting, which is the point of hiring a driver.

Should we stay in Niagara Falls, Canada or New York?

Most couples choose the Canadian side for the view of the Horseshoe Falls and the Fallsview restaurants. The New York side is quieter, with Niagara Falls State Park on the doorstep, and needs no border crossing from Buffalo airport.
