The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge crosses the Niagara Gorge between downtown Niagara Falls, Ontario and downtown Niagara Falls, New York, a short distance downriver from the Rainbow Bridge. It is the only crossing in the region reserved for NEXUS members, which is why "Whirlpool Bridge NEXUS" is such a common search. If you hold a NEXUS card and drive your own car, it can be the calmest way across. If you are travelling with NiagaraFallsLimo.net, or with anyone who is not a member, it is not your bridge, and this page explains why.
Who can use the Whirlpool Bridge?
Only NEXUS members, and only when every person in the car holds a card, driver included. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is cars-only and open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., about 4 km (2.5 mi) from the Falls. NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans chauffeured crossings on the Rainbow or Lewiston-Queenston bridges; book a fixed fare online.
Global Entry members get one extra concession: the bridge accepts Global Entry for US-bound crossings only. Into Canada, NEXUS is the only pass.
Whirlpool Rapids Bridge facts
According to the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC), which operates it with the Rainbow and Lewiston-Queenston bridges:
- Who: dedicated to NEXUS cardholders; Global Entry permitted US-bound only.
- What: autos only. Commercial vehicles, trucks, pedestrians, bicycles and anything in tow are not allowed.
- When: 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. CBSA's office directory, which lists it as "Niagara Falls Whirlpool Bridge (NEXUS members only)", shows the same hours every day, and CBP's Buffalo port data agrees.
- Lanes: two car inspection lanes into the United States and two into Canada.
- Roads: on the Canadian side, the QEW to Highway 420 to Bridge Street; on the American side, the I-190 to Ontario Avenue.
- Neighbours: the VIA Rail and GO Niagara Falls station at 4267 Bridge Street is close to the Canadian end; the Amtrak Niagara Falls, NY station at 825 Depot Avenue West is on the American side.
The full comparison of what each crossing accepts is on the NFBC "Which bridge do I take?" page.
The every-occupant rule
This is the rule that catches people out. CBSA's guidance says that to use NEXUS, everyone accompanying you must also be a member, regardless of age, and the driver is responsible for confirming that all passengers are members and carrying their cards. At the Whirlpool Bridge every person scans a card at the reader before reaching the inspection booth, as CBSA described when it opened the bridge to NEXUS-only traffic in both directions, in its 2017 notice.

What that means in practice:
- A NEXUS couple with a baby who has no card of their own cannot use the bridge. Children need their own membership; under 18 there is no fee.
- A NEXUS family with a non-member grandparent in the back seat cannot use it.
- A taxi, rideshare or chauffeured car qualifies only if the driver is a member too.
If any one person in the vehicle lacks a card, use the Rainbow Bridge, a few minutes away, or the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge to the north.
Why chauffeured trips use another bridge
The Whirlpool Bridge's own rules point chauffeured cars elsewhere. NFBC lists it for autos only and excludes commercial vehicles, while it lists limousines among the permitted vehicles on the Rainbow Bridge and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Add the every-occupant NEXUS rule and the 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. window, and the choice is clear: NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans chauffeured crossings over Rainbow or Lewiston-Queenston, and over the Peace Bridge when the trip runs to south Buffalo or Fort Erie.
Holding NEXUS still helps you on a chauffeured trip. Your card is a valid entry document in both directions, and your trusted-traveller status is known to the officers. You simply ride through the general lanes with the rest of the vehicle. Our cross-border car service page explains how those trips run.
Paying the Whirlpool toll
NFBC collects its toll only on traffic entering Canada; at the Rainbow and Whirlpool bridges the booths sit at the start of the crossing into Canada. Since May 1, 2025 the passenger-car rate is US$6.00 or CA$8.50, per the NFBC toll page.
At the Whirlpool Bridge payment works through a NEXUS toll account or E-ZPass. The commission's NEXUS toll program lets you enrol your existing card at the kiosk at the bridge with a minimum balance of $5.00, then top up online. When CBSA announced NEXUS-only operation, it stated that cash and tokens are not accepted there. If you replace your card, the commission moves your balance across, which can take up to two weeks, so keep the old card until the new one has worked once.
The commission also warns that it never asks for unpaid balances by text message. Treat any such message as a scam.
Whirlpool Bridge wait times
The Whirlpool Bridge has no real-time wait technology. The NFBC traffic page says its readings are updated hourly by the commission, and CBP's wait-time feed has shown "Update Pending" for the Whirlpool lanes at times. CBSA's main border wait times table lists the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston and Peace bridges for Niagara, not Whirlpool.
For NEXUS members this is less of a problem than it sounds. With two NEXUS-only lanes each way the queue is usually short, but "usually" is not a promise. If you have a flight to catch, check the Rainbow Bridge figure as a backup. Our border wait times guide shows all four crossings side by side.
What a NEXUS lane does not cover
NEXUS speeds up inspection; it does not change customs law. CBSA's NEXUS rules say you may not use NEXUS if you carry CA$10,000 or more in currency or monetary instruments, commercial goods, or goods that are restricted, controlled or prohibited, or that need a permit, such as firearms. Cannabis in any form remains illegal to take across the border in either direction, whatever its legal status at home.
On the way back into Canada you still declare purchases. Personal exemptions depend on how long you were away, and same-day shoppers get none; our duty-free and declarations guide covers the details.
Planning a NEXUS crossing: which option fits
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drive yourself over Whirlpool (all occupants NEXUS) | Short drive plus a usually brief NEXUS queue, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. only | Fuel, NFBC toll into Canada (as of 2026 US$6 / CA$8.50), parking | Whatever fits | NEXUS households crossing often |
| Walk over the Rainbow Bridge | Walking time plus pedestrian inspection | Pedestrian toll into the US side is collected on the Canadian side | What you can carry | Light day trips between the two Falls |
| Rideshare | Uncertain; drivers often do not cross | Surge pricing | Car boot | Rides that stay on one side |
| Taxi | Drive time plus a general-lane queue | Metered | Car boot | Short unplanned trips |
| Private chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) via Rainbow or Lewiston-Queenston | Drive plus general-lane queue, door to door | Fixed fare via booker | Sized to the vehicle class | Mixed groups, airport runs, luggage, families |
When the Whirlpool Bridge is the better choice
If everyone in the car is a member, you are driving your own vehicle, and it is between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., the Whirlpool Bridge is hard to beat for a short hop between the two cities. Locals use it for errands and dinners. NEXUS travellers arriving by Amtrak at Niagara Falls, NY can also be collected on the Canadian side by someone driving over Whirlpool, provided every occupant is a member.
Book a chauffeur instead when the group is mixed, when there is luggage for an airport, when you need a car seat installed, or when the trip runs outside bridge hours. A late landing at Buffalo Niagara International heading for a Fallsview hotel, for example, is a general-lane trip whichever cards you hold. Our guide on chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare compares the options in more depth.
Who this matters to
- Individuals: NEXUS-holding commuters and frequent visitors who drive themselves, and travellers who need a chauffeur when the car must stay at home.
- Couples: a NEXUS couple can use Whirlpool in their own car; on a chauffeured anniversary dinner across the river, plan on Rainbow.
- Families: every child needs their own NEXUS card for this bridge; families with one non-member often find a chauffeured family transfer simpler.
- Groups: groups almost never qualify, since one non-member rules out the lane.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Whirlpool Bridge NEXUS only in both directions?
Yes. The bridge is dedicated to NEXUS cardholders both into Canada and into the United States. The one exception is that Global Entry members may use it for US-bound crossings only. Everyone in the vehicle must hold a card for the crossing to qualify.
What are the Whirlpool Bridge hours?
The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., according to the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, the CBSA office directory and CBP. Outside those hours, NEXUS members use the Rainbow or Lewiston-Queenston bridges, which are open 24 hours.
Can a limo or taxi use the Whirlpool Bridge?
The commission lists the bridge for autos only and excludes commercial vehicles, and every occupant, including the driver, would need NEXUS. In practice chauffeured cars use the Rainbow or Lewiston-Queenston bridges, where limousines are listed as permitted, and NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans its crossings that way.
Do children need their own NEXUS card for the Whirlpool Bridge?
Yes. CBSA says everyone in the vehicle must be a member regardless of age. Children under 18 can join at no fee, but each needs their own card and an interview appointment. Without one, the whole family uses another bridge.
How do I pay the toll at the Whirlpool Bridge?
Tolls are collected only when entering Canada. Payment is through an NFBC NEXUS toll account or E-ZPass; you can enrol your NEXUS card at the kiosk at the bridge with a minimum of $5.00. The 2026 passenger-car rate is US$6.00 or CA$8.50.
Can I walk or cycle over the Whirlpool Bridge?
No. Pedestrians and bicycles are not allowed. Walkers and cyclists use the Rainbow Bridge, which has a pedestrian walkway and lets bicycles ride in the roadway with traffic.
Does Global Entry work on the Whirlpool Bridge?
Only for travel into the United States. Heading into Canada, the bridge accepts NEXUS members only. Global Entry members without NEXUS should plan on the Rainbow or Lewiston-Queenston bridges for the Canada-bound leg. The border crossing hub links every document guide.
