Plenty of families drive to Niagara with the dog in the back seat, and a fair number then want to pop over the river for a few hours. Crossing the border with a dog into Canada, or taking one from Ontario into New York, is routine, but the two countries do not ask for the same papers. Canada cares mostly about rabies vaccination. The United States, since August 2024, cares about age, a microchip and an online form. Get both right before you reach the booth and the animal is usually the least interesting thing in the car.
This guide comes from the reservations desk at NiagaraFallsLimo.net, where cross-border trips are ordinary work, and reflects the official rules as published in October 2026.
Can you cross the Niagara border with a dog into Canada?
Yes. Entering Canada at the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston or Peace Bridge, a pet dog over three months old should carry a valid rabies vaccination certificate, and you must declare it. With NiagaraFallsLimo.net the Rainbow Bridge is about 2 km (1 mi) from Fallsview hotels; enter your pickup in the online booker to see the fixed fare.
The details matter, because a refused dog means a refused car.
What Canada checks when a dog comes in from New York
Canada's import rules for animals are written by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and enforced at the booth by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The CBSA's page on travelling with animals is blunt: officers can refuse, detain or confiscate an animal that is undeclared, "including family pets", or that arrives without the permits or certificates it needs. The same page advises carrying the physical original of every required document.
For a personal pet dog coming from the United States, the rules boil down to this:
- Rabies vaccination. Dogs need a valid rabies vaccination certificate. CFIA's material says a puppy younger than three months at the time of import does not need rabies vaccination or certification.
- Declare the animal. Say you have a dog when the officer asks what you are bringing in, even if the dog is asleep in a crate.
- Assistance dogs. A trained, certified assistance dog travelling with its own handler falls in the personal category and is exempt from the rabies vaccination requirement. Therapy, comfort and emotional-support animals are not assistance dogs under the CBSA definition.
- No post-import quarantine applies to pet dogs.
Because the precise certificate wording and any exceptions sit in CFIA's interactive tool rather than on one page, start at the CFIA pets import page a few weeks before the trip and answer its questions for your animal.
Canadian residents coming home after a day in New York need the same certificate. CFIA's guidance on dogs travelling to the United States makes the point directly: a dog returning to Canada must still meet Canada's import requirements.
Taking a dog from Ontario into New York
The United States side is handled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers checking at the booth. New rules took effect on 1 August 2024, and they surprise people who crossed with a dog years ago.
For a dog that has only been in rabies-free or low-risk countries during the past six months, which covers a dog that has lived in Canada or the US, the CDC's requirements page lists:
- The dog must be at least six months old at the time of entry or return.
- It must have a microchip that a universal scanner can read.
- You need a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. The form is free, completed online for each dog, and the receipt is emailed to you. Show it printed or on a phone.
- The dog must appear healthy on arrival.
The receipt is valid for six months, and a dog that shuttles between Canada and the US can reuse it until it expires, provided it has not been in a high-risk country. And a dog that has been in a high-risk country for dog rabies during the past six months is a different case entirely; CFIA notes such dogs cannot enter the US directly from Canada. If that describes your dog, sort it out with the CDC well before travel.
A puppy under six months old cannot go into the United States under these rules. Families who bring a young puppy to Niagara should plan to stay on the Canadian side.
Cats and other pets
Cats are simpler on the federal level. The CDC does not require a rabies certificate for a cat entering the United States, but it does require that the cat look healthy, and it notes that most states require rabies vaccination. New York sets its own rules, so check them if you are staying more than a few hours.
Going into Canada, cats have their own entry in CFIA's import tool. Answer it for your cat rather than assuming the dog rules apply. Birds, reptiles and small mammals have separate requirements, some with permits.
A pet in a chauffeured car: what to tell the reservations desk
Trained service animals are welcome in every vehicle class. For a pet, contact the reservations desk before you book, describe the animal and whether it travels in a carrier, and wait for confirmation that the class you want can take it. The SUV classes, with room for up to six passengers and six bags, are the usual answer when a crate is involved.
At the booth, the chauffeur hands over the window and the officer speaks to everyone in the car. Have the dog's papers in your hand, not in a suitcase in the back. Every passenger, of every age, also needs their own identification; see our pages on documents for entering Canada and documents for entering the USA.
One quirk worth knowing: a dog does not affect NEXUS eligibility, but people do. A car may use a NEXUS lane, or the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, only if every human occupant, the driver included, is a NEXUS member carrying their card. A hired car rarely qualifies, which is why our posts on NEXUS in a hired car and what officers ask chauffeured passengers are worth a read.
Which bridge to use with an animal on board
Three bridges take cars between the two Niagara Falls and Buffalo. With a pet, choose the one that keeps the drive short and the queue predictable.
- Rainbow Bridge. About 2 km (1 mi) and four or five minutes from the Fallsview hotels to the Canadian plaza, and 500 metres from Clifton Hill. No trucks are allowed, which keeps it a car-and-coach bridge. Our Rainbow Bridge page covers approach roads and plazas.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. About 11 km (7 mi) north of Fallsview along the river, usually 15 to 20 minutes. It carries commercial trucks as well as cars, and it is the natural choice for Niagara-on-the-Lake or Lewiston.
- Peace Bridge. About 31 km (20 mi) south, roughly 25 to 30 minutes from Fallsview to the Fort Erie plaza, and the direct route to downtown Buffalo.
Whichever bridge you take, the time in the queue is the unknown. Check the live board before leaving the hotel; our guide to border wait time tools explains which source to trust in each direction. A long, slow queue on a sunny July afternoon is warm for a dog even with air conditioning running, so build in water and a short walk before you join the line rather than after.
A paperwork folder that saves the day
Put everything for the animal in one sleeve or phone folder, separate from the passports:
- Rabies vaccination certificate, the original issued by your veterinarian, identifying the dog.
- CDC Dog Import Form receipt (for the US), printed and on your phone.
- Microchip number written down, in case a scanner struggles.
- Proof of age for a young puppy coming into Canada.
- For an assistance dog: its certification from the training organisation.
- Food in its sealed, labelled bag; declare it. Rules on meat-based pet food change, so check the CBSA and CBP pages if you are carrying more than a day's worth.
Photograph each page too, in case one goes missing in a hotel room.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
Here is an honest comparison for a short crossing from the Canadian side with a medium-sized dog. Door-to-door times exclude the border queue, which nobody can promise.
| Mode | Door-to-door time (Fallsview to Prospect Point, NY) | Cost note | Luggage and crate | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | About 10–15 min plus the queue (5.6 km / 3.5 mi) | Fixed fare via booker, shown before you pay | SUV classes take a crate; tell the desk first | Families with a pet, papers and bags; a known car both ways |
| Rideshare | Varies; many drivers will not cross | Surge pricing | Driver's choice whether a pet rides | Short local trips on one side of the river |
| Taxi | Similar drive time if the cab will cross | Metered | Driver's choice | One-way local rides in Ontario |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | About 25 min on foot from Clifton Hill, longer from Fallsview, plus the queue | Pedestrian toll, US$1.00 or CA$1.25 as of 2026 | Leash only | A dog that walks well and no luggage |
| Driving yourself | Same as chauffeur | Your car, fuel, US$6.00 / CA$8.50 car toll into Canada as of 2026 | Your car | Locals with the dog's papers in order |
The verdict: if you already have your own car and the dog's papers are in order, drive it; that is the simplest answer. If you are staying at a Fallsview hotel without a car, walking the Rainbow Bridge with a calm, leashed dog is genuinely fine for a short look at the American Falls. Rideshare is the weak option here, because some drivers will not take animals and some will not cross the border at all. A pre-booked chauffeur earns its place when you have a crate, children, bags or a timed return, and want the same driver waiting on the other side. Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Tell the booker where and when. Enter the pickup, for example your hotel, and the drop-off on the other side, such as a Niagara Falls, NY address or Buffalo Niagara International Airport, with the date and time. Add a flight number if it is an airport run.
- Pick the vehicle. Each class shows its fixed fare. With a crate, look at the Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV.
- Add the details and pay. Passengers, bags, child seats and extras go in last; pay securely and the confirmation arrives by email. If a pet is coming, confirm with the reservations desk before you pay.
The cross-border car service page explains how a crossing works on the day, and the Buffalo airport transfer page covers the most common US-side run.
Who this suits
Individuals travelling with an assistance dog get a vehicle and driver who expect the animal and know the paperwork. Couples bringing a small dog for a weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake can cross at Lewiston-Queenston for an afternoon in Lewiston without moving the car twice. Families are the main audience: children, a crate, a stroller and a dog fit in an SUV where they would not fit in a sedan. For crossings with children as well as a pet, our guide to crossing with kids covers consent letters.
The wider picture of the bridges, documents and lanes sits in the border crossing hub.
Frequently asked questions
Does my dog need a rabies certificate to enter Canada from Niagara Falls, NY?
Yes, for a dog over three months old. Carry the original certificate from your veterinarian, identifying the dog. Declare the dog at the booth. CBSA can refuse an undeclared animal or one without its required certificates. Check the CFIA pet import tool for your dog before you travel.
What is the CDC Dog Import Form?
It is a free online form the CDC has required since 1 August 2024 for every dog entering the United States. You complete it for each dog and receive an emailed receipt, valid for six months, which you show to the CBP officer on paper or on your phone. The dog must also be microchipped and at least six months old.
Can a puppy go from Niagara Falls, Ontario to the American side?
Not if it is younger than six months. The CDC's rules require dogs to be at least six months old at entry or return to the United States.
Do cats need papers to cross at the Rainbow Bridge?
Going into the US, the CDC does not require a rabies certificate for a cat, but the cat must appear healthy, and New York and most states have their own vaccination rules. Going into Canada, cats have separate CFIA requirements; answer the CFIA tool for your cat. Declare the animal either way.
Can a pet ride in a NiagaraFallsLimo.net vehicle?
Trained service animals are welcome in every class. For a pet, contact the reservations desk before booking, describe the animal and whether it travels in a carrier, and wait for confirmation that your chosen vehicle can take it. An SUV is usually the right size when a crate is involved.
Does having a dog in the car change which bridge we use?
Not legally. All three car bridges accept pets that meet the rules. Practically, the Rainbow Bridge is the shortest hop from Fallsview and Clifton Hill, Lewiston-Queenston suits Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the Peace Bridge suits Buffalo. Check live wait times first so the animal is not sitting in a long queue.
Can I bring my dog's food across?
Declare it. Rules on meat-based pet food change from time to time, so check the CBSA and CBP pages before carrying a larger quantity across the border.
