For travellers coming to Niagara Falls from Australia or New Zealand, the Falls are rarely the whole trip. They are a two- or three-day stop in a journey that might start in Vancouver, take in the Rockies, run east to Toronto and finish in New York before the long flight home. The planning challenge is the joins: which city you fly into, which border you cross and how you get from one to the next without wasting a day. NiagaraFallsLimo.net handles the ground legs around the Falls in both countries, and this guide sets out the options.
How do Australians and New Zealanders fit Niagara Falls into a North America trip?
Most fly into Toronto Pearson, about 122 km (76 mi) and 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 from Niagara Falls, Ontario, then continue to New York by air from Buffalo, about 42 km away, or by road, about 633 km. NiagaraFallsLimo.net covers each leg; the online booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.
Long-haul routing: there is no nonstop to Toronto
There are no nonstop flights between Australia and Toronto. Air Canada advertises daily nonstop flights from Sydney to Vancouver, and travellers from both Australia and New Zealand reach Toronto with at least one connection, typically through a Canadian or US gateway on the west coast. That first decision shapes the paperwork:
- Enter through Canada (for example, via Vancouver). You need an eTA for the flight into Canada. Toronto and Niagara follow naturally, and the US comes later by road or air.
- Enter through the United States. You need an approved ESTA for the US. If you then reach Niagara by land from Buffalo, you do not need an eTA, because Canada's eTA is only for air travel; you do need your passport.
Neither route is better in general. It depends where your trip ends. If you finish in New York, entering through Canada and leaving through the US often flows best, with Niagara as the natural crossing point between the two.
The paperwork: eTA for Canada, ESTA for the US
Australia and New Zealand are both on Canada's eTA list, and the eTA costs CA$7 on canada.ca (as of 2026). The Government of Canada's eTA eligibility page confirms that travellers from eTA-required countries generally do not need one when arriving by car, bus, train or boat.
Both countries are also in the US Visa Waiver Program, so you need an approved ESTA, which from 16 October 2026 costs US$40.62. CBP's I-94 page says Visa Waiver travellers need that ESTA before arriving at a US land border, and that I-94 records at land crossings are now electronic, with an option to apply in advance through the CBP Link app. Our documents for entering the USA page explains the rest, and the journal post on the Canadian eTA for visitors flying into Toronto covers the Canadian side.
At the bridge, every passenger in the car presents their own documents. Nobody can promise how long the queue will be, so build slack into any day that crosses.
Toronto, Niagara and New York: four ways to join them
| Link | How it works | Distance and time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto to Niagara Falls | Chauffeur, GO train or bus | about 130 km (80 mi), 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 by car | Everyone |
| Niagara Falls to Buffalo airport, then fly to New York | Chauffeur across the Rainbow or Peace Bridge, then a domestic flight | about 42 km (26 mi), about 45 min plus the bridge | Travellers short on time |
| Niagara Falls to New York by road | Chauffeur door to door | about 633 km (393 mi), usually 8 – 9 h with stops | Families, groups, luggage |
| Toronto to New York by train | Amtrak Maple Leaf, calling at Niagara Falls, ON and NY | about 12 h 30 for the whole route | Rail enthusiasts |
The Buffalo option is the quickest way from the Falls to Manhattan. A chauffeur takes you from your Canadian hotel across the bridge to Buffalo Niagara International, and the flight to New York is domestic. Our Buffalo Niagara airport page and the Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada route show how the crossing works in either direction.
The road option suits families or groups with big long-haul suitcases who would rather not check in again. Our Niagara Falls to New York City route and the journal post on ending your trip in Manhattan describe the drive, and city-to-city rides explain how longer one-way trips are booked.
The train option is the slow, scenic one. Amtrak's Maple Leaf page lists a daily departure between New York and Toronto, taking about 12 hours 30 minutes end to end, with stops at Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York. For every way of making the trip compared side by side, see New York to Niagara Falls, every way compared.

Driving on the right, after a lifetime on the left
Many Australian and New Zealand travellers hire a car for parts of a North American trip, and Ontario lets visitors staying under three months drive on a valid home licence. Ontario's visiting driver guidance also says an International Driving Permit from your own country is needed for longer stays.
The adjustment that matters is the side of the road. Turning across traffic, roundabouts in the opposite direction and the habit of reaching for the gear lever with the wrong hand all take time to unlearn, and the first hours after a long-haul flight are the worst time to start. A common pattern is to be driven from the airport to Niagara, enjoy the Falls on foot, and pick up a hire car later in the trip when you are rested. Crossing the border in a rental car is possible, but check the rental agreement first.
A three-day Niagara stop in a longer itinerary
Day one: arrive from Toronto. A morning pickup in downtown Toronto or at Pearson, about 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 to the Falls. Afternoon at Table Rock and the boat into the mist in season. Evening walk to see the illumination, which runs every night of the year.
Day two: wine country and the river. The Niagara Parkway north past the Floral Clock and Queenston Heights to Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 24 km (15 mi) away, for wineries and the old town. Our chauffeurs never drink, and nobody drinks in our vehicles, so the tasting is done at the cellar door.
Day three: across the border. With your ESTA in hand, cross the Rainbow Bridge to Niagara Falls State Park and Goat Island for the American view, then continue to Buffalo for a flight to New York, or settle in for the long road to Manhattan.
Seasons from a southern-hemisphere point of view
Niagara's seasons are the reverse of home. The northern summer, June to August, falls in the Australian and New Zealand winter, including the mid-year school break, and it is the busiest time at the Falls, with the longest attraction hours; in 2026 the fireworks ran nightly at 10 p.m. from 15 May to 12 October. September and October bring autumn colour and fewer crowds.
Christmas in Niagara is cold, often snowy, and a novelty for many Australians. The Winter Festival of Lights runs from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027, but the boats and some attractions are closed, and the drive to New York in winter weather needs extra time.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 from Toronto; about 45 min plus bridge to BUF | Fixed fare via booker | By class, up to 6 bags | Long-haul luggage, families, border days |
| Rideshare | similar within Canada | Surge pricing; cross-border trips often unavailable | Depends on car | Solo travellers inside one country |
| Taxi | similar | Metered | Trunk only | Short hops in Niagara |
| GO train or bus from Toronto | 2 h or more with changes | Public fare | Carry it yourself | Light packers |
| Amtrak Maple Leaf | about 12 h 30 Toronto to New York | Rail fare | Generous | Slow travel |
Verdict: if you are a backpacker with one bag, the GO train from Toronto and the Maple Leaf to New York make a perfectly good budget route, and taxis are fine for short rides once you are in Niagara. Where a chauffeur clearly wins is the border day: one vehicle, your luggage stays in the boot, the driver crosses with you, and the onward leg to Buffalo airport or New York is already arranged at a fixed fare. Our guide to chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare compares the modes more generally.
Who this suits
Couples on a long honeymoon or retirement trip use a chauffeur for the joins and travel slowly in between. Families with school-age children appreciate an SUV for up to six with six bags, which handles a family's long-haul luggage in one go. Individuals travelling solo often take the train to Niagara and book only the border crossing to Buffalo. Groups, such as sports clubs or friends on a reunion trip, share an Executive Sprinter for up to 12 for day trips, with carry-on bags only, or book a coach on request.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Enter each leg. Toronto hotel or Pearson to Niagara; Niagara to Buffalo airport with your flight number; or Niagara to a New York address. Add return or onward legs in the same session.
- Choose the vehicle. Each class shows its fixed fare, so you can weigh a sedan against an SUV for your luggage.
- Finish the details. Passengers, bags, child seats and any extras, then pay securely. Confirmation arrives by email.
Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: no charge with more than 72 hours' notice, 10% at 72 hours or less, 50% at 48 hours or less, and 100% at 24 hours or less or for a no-show. If your long-haul schedule changes, update the booking as soon as you know.

Frequently asked questions
Do Australians need a visa for Niagara Falls?
Australians and New Zealanders do not need a Canadian visa, but they need an eTA to fly into Canada, CA$7 on canada.ca (as of 2026). Both countries are in the US Visa Waiver Program, so visiting the American side needs an approved ESTA.
Is there a direct flight from Australia to Toronto?
No nonstop flights operate between Australia and Toronto. Most travellers connect through Vancouver, where Air Canada flies nonstop from Sydney, or through a US gateway on the west coast. Travellers from New Zealand also need at least one connection on the way to Toronto.
What is the fastest way from Niagara Falls to New York City?
Usually a chauffeured transfer across the border to Buffalo Niagara International, about 42 km (26 mi) and 45 minutes plus the bridge, then a domestic flight to New York. Driving all the way is about 633 km (393 mi), typically 8 to 9 hours.
Do I need an eTA if I enter Canada by car from the US?
No. Canada's eTA is required to board a flight to Canada. Entering by car at a Niagara bridge, Australian and New Zealand citizens need their passport, not an eTA.
Can I drive in Ontario on my Australian or New Zealand licence?
Yes, for visits under three months, according to Ontario's guidance for visitors. Longer stays need an International Driving Permit obtained before you leave home. Remember that traffic drives on the right.
How many days should I spend at Niagara Falls?
Two or three days is the usual stop within a longer North America trip: one for the Falls, one for Niagara-on-the-Lake and the river, and, with an ESTA, part of a day on the US side before moving on.
Is the Amtrak train from Toronto to New York worth it?
For slow travellers, yes: the Maple Leaf runs daily with stops at both Niagara Falls stations and takes about 12 hours 30 minutes end to end. If you are short on time, a short drive to Buffalo and a flight is much faster.
Can a chauffeur take us from Niagara Falls all the way to Manhattan?
Yes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books one-way city-to-city rides to New York, about 633 km (393 mi). The booker shows the fixed fare for your vehicle class, and the chauffeur crosses the border with you.
