Most overseas visitors plan Niagara Falls as a Canadian trip: fly into Toronto, stay in Fallsview, see the Horseshoe Falls. Then, on the second morning, someone suggests crossing to Goat Island and the Cave of the Winds. It is a short drive. It is also an international border with two immigration systems, and the visa that brought you to Canada says nothing about the United States.
This post explains, for visitors who are neither Canadian nor American, what you need to enter the US side and what you need to come back into Canada. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives this round trip for guests from Europe, Asia, Latin America and the Gulf, and the conversation we most want to have is the one before the booking. For the logistics of a simple there-and-back, see our post on crossing just to see the other side.
Do you need a visa to visit the US side of Niagara Falls from Canada?
It depends on your passport. Visa Waiver nationals need an approved ESTA; most others need a US visitor visa; everyone usually needs an I-94 at the land border. Fallsview to the US side is about 3.4 km (2 mi), 8–15 minutes plus inspection. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books the round trip at a fixed fare in the online booker.
The rules below are summaries of official pages checked in October 2026. Immigration rules change, and the officer at the booth always makes the final decision, so confirm your own case with the US and Canadian governments before you travel.
Step one: the United States side
Visa Waiver Program nationals. Citizens of the countries in the US Visa Waiver Program, which includes the UK, most of the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand among others, do not need a visa for a short tourist visit. They do need an approved ESTA. US Customs and Border Protection's I-94 page, last modified in July 2026, says Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA before arriving at a US land border. An ESTA is valid for two years or until the passport expires. The fee rose to US$40.62 from 16 October 2026 (price as of 2026).
Everyone else. Nationals of countries outside the Visa Waiver Program generally need a US visitor visa, obtained at a US embassy or consulate in advance. A Canadian visitor visa does not substitute for it, and neither does Canadian permanent residence. What a Canadian permanent resident needs to enter the US depends on the passport they hold, not on their Canadian status.
The I-94. Most non-Canadian, non-American visitors receive an electronic I-94 arrival record when they enter by land. CBP no longer issues a paper stub. It encourages travellers to apply in advance through the CBP Link app or the I-94 website; a provisional I-94 lapses unless you present yourself for inspection within seven days. The charge for a land-border I-94 stands at US$30 as of 2026.
Photographs. A Department of Homeland Security rule in effect since 26 December 2025 allows non-citizens, Canadians included, to be photographed on entry and exit at US land ports. Expect a camera at the booth.
Our core page on documents for entering the USA keeps the current list.
Step two: coming back into Canada
This is where visitors worry most, and usually need to worry least. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's entry requirements page says that someone with valid status in Canada, for example as a visitor, who is re-entering after visiting only the US or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon does not need a visa or an eTA for that re-entry.
Three conditions are hidden in that sentence, so read it carefully:
- You must still have valid status in Canada. If the officer who admitted you at Pearson gave you six months, you are covered. If your authorized stay has ended, you are not.
- You must have visited only the United States (or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon). A side trip to Mexico breaks the rule.
- You still need your passport. And you will still be examined like any other traveller.
eTA travellers have it easiest. IRCC's eTA eligibility page says that travellers from eTA-required countries arriving by car, bus, train or boat do not need an eTA in most cases. The eTA is for flights. A Brazilian visitor who flew into Pearson with an eTA and crosses back over the Rainbow Bridge by car is arriving by land.
If anything in your history is unusual, such as a previous refusal, a pending application or a stay near its end, ask IRCC before you leave Canada rather than at the booth.
Your passport, both sides, at a glance
| Your situation | US side | Back into Canada |
|---|---|---|
| Visa Waiver national (UK, France, Japan, Australia and others) | Passport, approved ESTA, I-94 issued at the border | Passport; no eTA needed by land if your Canadian visit is still valid |
| Visa-required for the US, eTA-eligible for Canada | Passport and US visitor visa | Passport; no eTA by land |
| Visa-required for both countries | Passport and US visitor visa | Passport; valid status in Canada and only the US visited, so no new Canadian visa needed |
| Canadian permanent resident | Depends on your nationality | PR card or PR travel document |
| US permanent resident visiting Canada | Green card | Green card; carry your passport too |
Check your own nationality on the official lists: CBP for the Visa Waiver Program, IRCC for Canada. The eTA itself, needed when you fly into Canada, is explained in our post on the Canadian eTA for visitors flying into Toronto.
Stays of 30 days or more in the US
Most Niagara side trips last an afternoon, so this will not apply to you. But visitors spending a month or more on the American side should know that US Citizenship and Immigration Services now requires non-citizens aged 14 and over who stay 30 days or longer, and are not already registered, to register and be fingerprinted. The rule was finalized in June 2026; details are on the USCIS registration page.
What there is to see on the American side
The reward for the paperwork is a different view. On the US side you stand beside the American Falls rather than opposite them. Niagara Falls State Park covers Goat Island, Prospect Point and the Three Sisters Islands; the Maid of the Mist leaves from Prospect Point, and the Cave of the Winds takes visitors to the base of the Bridal Veil Falls. Our guide to the Canadian side vs the American side helps you decide how much time each deserves.
From the Fallsview hotels to the Rainbow Bridge plaza is about 2 km, four minutes of driving. Across the bridge, downtown Niagara Falls NY is about 3.4 km (2 mi) from Fallsview, and the state park entrances are a few minutes more. Coming back from the US side to Table Rock is about 5 km (3 mi), usually ten minutes plus the Canadian booth. As of 2026, the Rainbow Bridge toll is US$6.00 or CA$8.50 for a car entering Canada, with no toll entering the US. The bridge itself is described on our Rainbow Bridge page.

How we plan a day on both sides
For overseas guests, the chauffeur builds the day around the two inspections, not around the sights. A typical shape:
- Cross early. Canada Border Services Agency's 2026 advice is that early mornings are the best time to cross, and the same logic suits a morning start towards the US. Live estimates for both directions are on our border wait times page.
- Have every passport open and every ESTA or visa confirmed before the car leaves the hotel. The chauffeur will ask, but will not inspect your documents or hold them.
- Return before the evening rush if you have a dinner reservation in Fallsview, or late at night if you want the illuminated falls from the US side first.
The chauffeur waits on the American side while you visit, using the booker's "by the hour" mode, or drops you and returns at an agreed time. Either way, you cross back together.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Start with your hotel. Enter the Fallsview, Clifton Hill or Niagara-on-the-Lake pickup, choose "by the hour" or a return trip, and set the date and time.
- Pick the car. Every class shows its fixed fare. Couples often choose a Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class; families of up to six take a Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV.
- Note the passports. In the booking notes, mention the nationalities in your party; it helps the desk plan timing. Once paid, the booking is confirmed to your inbox.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur, by the hour | 8–15 min each way plus two inspections | Fixed fare via booker, shown before you pay | Not an issue on a day trip | Overseas families, couples, anyone needing a waiting car |
| Rideshare app | Not dependable across the border | App pricing | n/a | Getting around on one side only |
| Taxi | Only if a driver agrees to cross | Metered | Sedan | Short trips on one side |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | 10–20 min on foot plus inspection | Pedestrian toll into the US, as of 2026 | Day bag | Fit visitors on a half-day with no plans after |
| Tour bus | Fixed itinerary | Published ticket | Day bag | Visitors happy with a set schedule |
The honest verdict: two fit adults with ESTAs and a free afternoon can walk across the Rainbow Bridge, explore Goat Island on foot and walk back, and they will enjoy it. Our post on walking across the Rainbow Bridge vs being driven explains the toll and the route. A rideshare is the wrong tool: Niagara Falls International Airport says rideshare services are not allowed to cross the border. A pre-booked chauffeur makes sense for families, older travellers, rainy or winter days, and any day that ends with a reservation back in Canada.
Who this suits
Individual travellers on a stopover often want two hours on the US side and a car that waits. Couples on their first North American trip like the chauffeur to handle the roads while they handle the passports. Families from Asia or the Gulf with grandparents in tow benefit most from a waiting SUV. Groups of mixed nationalities should check every member's status before booking: one missing visa turns the whole car around. Our page for couples has ideas for a slower day.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a US visa to see the American side of Niagara Falls?
If your country is in the Visa Waiver Program, you need an approved ESTA rather than a visa. If it is not, you will generally need a US visitor visa issued in advance. Your Canadian visa or eTA does not cover the United States.
Can I get my ESTA at the border?
Apply before you travel. CBP says Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA before arriving at a US land border. The fee is US$40.62 from 16 October 2026, and an ESTA stays valid for two years or until your passport expires.
Will I need a new Canadian visa to come back from the US side?
Usually not. IRCC says someone with valid status in Canada who is re-entering after visiting only the United States or Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon does not need a visa or eTA. Your authorized stay in Canada must still be valid, and you must carry your passport.
Do I pay for an I-94 if I cross for one afternoon?
Most visitors who are not Canadian or American receive an I-94 at the land border, and the fee is US$30 as of 2026. You can apply in advance using the CBP Link app or the I-94 website, then present yourself for inspection within seven days.
I have Canadian permanent residence. Can I enter the US with my PR card?
Your PR card proves your status in Canada, not your right to enter the United States. What you need for the US depends on your citizenship: an ESTA if you are a Visa Waiver national, otherwise generally a US visitor visa.
Can the chauffeur wait while we visit Goat Island?
Yes. Book the day in "by the hour" mode and the chauffeur stays with the car on the American side, then drives you back across. The fixed fare is shown in the booker before you pay.
Is the American side worth the border crossing?
For many visitors, yes. You stand beside the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls at Niagara Falls State Park, which you can only see from a distance in Canada. If time is short or documents are uncertain, the Canadian side alone gives the classic view of all three falls.
