Canadian eTA for Visitors Flying Into Toronto for Niagara Falls

If your passport is from a visa-exempt country and you are flying to Toronto Pearson, you almost certainly need an eTA before you board. Arrive by road and the rule changes. Here is the difference, and what it means for a day on the US side.

Every summer the reservations desk hears the same story from a few unlucky travellers: the flight to Toronto was booked, the Niagara hotel was paid for, the car was reserved, and then the airline refused to check them in because nobody had applied for an eTA. It is an easy mistake and an easy one to prevent. This guide from NiagaraFallsLimo.net explains the Canada eTA for a Niagara Falls trip: who needs one, who does not, why arriving by road is different from arriving by air, and what to sort out if you also plan to see the American Falls.

Do I need an eTA to fly to Toronto for Niagara Falls?

Yes, if your passport is from a visa-exempt country such as the UK or Australia: you need an approved eTA to board a flight to Canada. US citizens are exempt. From Toronto Pearson, NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives you about 122 km (76 mi) to Niagara Falls, usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45; book online.

An eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital entry requirement linked to your passport. You apply online, it is usually approved quickly, and it is checked by the airline before you board. Without it, the airline will not carry you, no matter how well the rest of the trip is planned.

Who needs an eTA, and who does not

The official eTA eligibility page from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) sets out the categories. In plain terms:

  • Citizens of eTA-required countries need an eTA and a valid passport to board a flight to Canada. This covers many European, Asia-Pacific and other visa-exempt nationalities.
  • US citizens do not need an eTA. They need proper identification, such as a valid US passport.
  • US lawful permanent residents (green card holders) have been exempt since April 26, 2022, but must travel with a valid passport from their country of nationality and proof of US permanent resident status.
  • Canadian permanent residents need neither an eTA nor a visa, but must carry a valid PR card or PR travel document.
  • Dual Canadian citizens must travel on a valid Canadian passport, not an eTA. American-Canadians may use either a Canadian or a US passport.
  • Visa-required nationals generally need a visitor visa. Citizens of some visa-required countries may be able to apply for an eTA instead, but only for air travel; check the IRCC page for your passport.

If you are unsure which group you are in, the IRCC site has a short questionnaire that asks about your passport and how you are travelling. Our international visitors guide also summarises the rules for both directions.

eTA rules for Niagara Falls visitors: air vs land

Niagara is unusual because many visitors arrive by road from the United States rather than by plane. The eTA rule follows the method of arrival:

  • Flying into Canada: eTA-required nationals need an eTA to board.
  • Arriving by car, bus, train or boat: IRCC says that in most cases eTA-required nationals do not need an eTA, only a valid passport. Visa-required nationals still need a visa by land.

So a British couple who fly into Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) and are driven across the Rainbow Bridge to their Fallsview hotel do not need an eTA for that crossing, although they do need passports and, for the US part of the trip, the right US authorisation. The same couple flying into Toronto Pearson do need one. Our documents for entering Canada page sets out the land-border paperwork, and the Buffalo Niagara airport transfer page describes the 42 km (26 mi) drive from BUF to the Canadian Falls, about 45 minutes plus the border wait.

If your itinerary mixes both, for example flying into Toronto and home from New York, you need the eTA for the flight into Canada and the correct US authorisation for entering the United States by land.

How to apply, and how long an eTA lasts

According to the IRCC help centre answer on eTAs:

  • Cost: CA$7 as of 2026.
  • Where: the Government of Canada website is the official place to apply. Companies that charge a fee to apply for you do not act on behalf of the Government of Canada.
  • Speed: most applicants receive confirmation within minutes; some take longer, so do not leave it to the departure lounge.
  • Validity: five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • Passport link: the eTA is linked to the passport number on the application, so travel with that same passport.

You need a valid passport, a credit or debit card and an email address. Apply once for each traveller, including children. If you renew your passport, confirm the eTA is linked to a valid document before your next trip.

Book your Pearson pickup once your eTA is approved

Landing at Toronto Pearson

When you land, you pass through Canadian border control at Pearson. ArriveCAN's Advance Declaration is optional and lets you submit your customs and immigration declaration up to 72 hours before the flight; Pearson Terminals 1 and 3 are among the participating airports. It cannot be used at the Niagara land crossings.

After baggage, your chauffeur is either inside arrivals with a name sign, if you chose meet and greet, or at the agreed pickup point. Flight tracking moves the pickup if your flight is early or late. The Toronto Pearson airport page explains the arrival, and the drive to the Falls is about 122 km. Allow two hours or more on a summer Friday afternoon.

Visiting the American side: ESTA, visas and the I-94

Most visitors who come to Niagara want to see both sides of the Falls: the Horseshoe Falls from Table Rock in Ontario, and the American Falls up close from Goat Island and Prospect Point in New York State, where the Maid of the Mist sails. Crossing into the United States brings a separate set of rules, and an eTA does not help with any of them.

  • Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA before reaching a US land border, according to the current CBP I-94 page. From October 16, 2026 the ESTA fee is US$40.62.
  • I-94 at a land border: the fee is US$30 as of 2026. CBP encourages travellers who need one to apply in advance through the CBP Link app or the I-94 website, and you still appear in person at the bridge to complete it. A provisional I-94 expires if you do not present for inspection within seven days.
  • Biometrics: since December 26, 2025, non-citizens, including Canadians, may be photographed on entry and exit at US land ports.
  • Visa-required nationals need the appropriate US visa.

Coming back into Canada by road the same day, an eTA-required national does not need an eTA for that land entry, but must carry a valid passport. A visa-required national needs a visa valid for re-entry. Our documents for entering the USA page and the sibling article on visa requirements for seeing both sides of the Falls cover the detail. Each passenger in the car must carry their own documents; the chauffeur cannot answer for anyone.

A simple timeline for a Niagara trip by air

  • When you book flights: look up what your passport needs for Canada (an eTA, a visa or neither), and what you need for the US side.
  • Before you pay for hotels: apply for the eTA on the official site, one per traveller.
  • Two weeks out: if you plan a US-side day, apply for the ESTA or check your US visa.
  • A few days out: book the airport car, with flight number, passenger count and any child seats.
  • 72 hours before the flight: optionally complete ArriveCAN's Advance Declaration.
  • Travel day: carry every passport, with the same passport you used for the eTA.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter the flight details. Pickup at Toronto Pearson (Terminal 1 or 3) or Buffalo Niagara, drop-off at your hotel, date, time and flight number so flight tracking can follow the plane.
  2. Pick a vehicle class. The Standard Sedan carries up to 3 passengers with 2 large bags; the Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV up to 6 with 6 bags; the Executive Sprinter up to 12 with carry-on bags only. Each shows a fixed fare.
  3. Add passengers and extras, then pay. Include child seats and meet and greet if you want them, pay securely, and save the confirmation email next to your eTA approval.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip

For an international visitor landing at Toronto Pearson and heading to Niagara Falls:

ModeDoor-to-door timeCost noteLuggageBest for
Pre-booked chauffeurAbout 1 h 35 – 1 h 45 off-peakFixed fare via booker, known before you flySized to the vehicle you chooseLong-haul arrivals, families, groups, late landings
RideshareSimilar drive, plus waiting for a driverSurge pricing possibleDepends on the carLight travellers with a working local data plan
Airport taxiSimilar drive, plus the stand queueMetered or posted flat fareUsually 2–3 bagsUnplanned arrivals
FlixBus from Pearson Terminal 1Minimum 1 h 30 on the road, plus waiting and the last mile to your hotelFares from CA$20.98 as of 2026Standard allowanceSolo travellers in no hurry

The honest verdict: a single traveller with one bag, landing in the middle of the day, can manage the bus from Terminal 1 and a short local connection at the Niagara end. A rideshare is fine for a couple who already have local data. After a long-haul flight with children, car seats, several suitcases or a late landing, the pre-booked car is the calm option, and it can take you over the bridge later in the week if your documents allow. The chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide goes into more detail.

Who this suits

Individuals arriving for a conference or a short break can sleep in the back seat. Couples on a first trip to Canada can avoid navigating the QEW after an overnight flight. Families travelling with children get car seats fitted before arrival. Groups of friends or relatives can share one Sprinter rather than splitting into separate cars. The international visitors border guide is the place to start for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an eTA if I only drive into Canada from the US?

In most cases, no. IRCC says eTA-required nationals arriving by car, bus, train or boat generally do not need an eTA, only a valid passport. Visa-required nationals still need a visitor visa. The eTA is required to board a flight to Canada.

How much does a Canadian eTA cost?

CA$7 as of 2026, paid on the official Government of Canada website. Third-party sites that charge more are not acting for the government. Each traveller, including children, needs their own eTA if their passport requires one.

How long is an eTA valid?

An approved eTA is valid for five years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. It is tied to the passport number you entered, so you must travel with that passport.

Do US citizens need an eTA for Niagara Falls, Canada?

No. US citizens are exempt and need proper identification, such as a valid US passport. US green card holders are also exempt from the eTA but must carry a valid passport and proof of US permanent resident status.

Does my eTA let me visit the American side of the Falls?

No. The eTA is only for entering Canada by air. To enter the United States you need the US authorisation for your nationality, such as an approved ESTA for Visa Waiver travellers or a US visa, and you may need an I-94 at the land border.

Can my chauffeur help at the border?

Your chauffeur drives you through the crossing and knows the bridges, but cannot answer questions or carry documents for you. Every passenger speaks to the officer and must hold their own valid passport and authorisations.

What happens to my car booking if my eTA is delayed?

Cancellation is counted from the scheduled pickup: more than 72 hours' notice has no charge, 72 hours or less is 10%, 48 hours or less is 50%, and 24 hours or less or a no-show is 100%. Apply for the eTA before booking flights to avoid the problem.
