A guest staying on Third Street in Niagara Falls, New York can see the Canadian skyline from the hotel lobby. The Fallsview towers, the Skylon and the Horseshoe Falls sit just across the gorge, and the Rainbow Bridge between them is a little under half a kilometre long. It is a very short international trip, and it still needs the right paperwork for every person in the car.
This guide sets out, traveller by traveller, the documents Canada asks for when you cross from Niagara Falls NY, and what you will need again when you come back. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives this crossing daily for hotel guests, families and visitors from overseas, and the most useful thing we can do before a pickup is make sure nobody is surprised at the booth.
Do you need a passport to go from Niagara Falls NY to Niagara Falls Canada?
Canada recommends a valid passport for everyone, including US citizens of any age, though US citizens may show other proof of citizenship. From a Niagara Falls NY hotel to Fallsview is about 3.4 km (2 mi) over the Rainbow Bridge, usually 8–15 minutes plus inspection. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books the crossing at a fixed fare shown in the online booker.
In practice it depends on who you are. A US citizen with a passport card can cross by land without a book passport; a visitor from Germany cannot. The table sorts out the common cases.
The documents Canada accepts, by traveller
Canada Border Services Agency publishes its rules on its travel documents page, updated in June 2026. Here is the short version for a car arriving from New York:
| Traveller | What to carry into Canada | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US citizen, adult | Valid passport recommended; CBSA also lists a birth certificate, certificate of citizenship or naturalization, or a US enhanced driver's licence | A passport card is accepted for land travel by the US on your way home |
| US citizen, child | Passport recommended, or proof of citizenship such as a birth certificate | Carry the child's ID and copies of any custody papers |
| US permanent resident | Your US permanent resident card (Form I-551) | CBSA says no passport is needed when arriving by land directly from the US; carry it anyway |
| Canadian citizen | Valid Canadian passport advised | You enter Canada by right, but the officer still needs proof |
| Visa-exempt foreign national (UK, Australia, Japan, Germany and others) | Valid passport | No eTA is needed when arriving by car |
| Visa-required foreign national | Valid passport plus a valid Canadian visitor visa | The visa rule applies by land as well as by air |
| NEXUS member | NEXUS card, plus passport or proof of permanent residence | CBSA still advises carrying the passport |
The rule that catches most visitors from outside North America is the electronic travel authorization. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says that travellers from eTA-required countries who arrive by car, bus, train or boat do not need an eTA in most cases; it is needed to board a flight to Canada. So a British couple who flew into Buffalo and are being driven across the Rainbow Bridge need their passports, but not an eTA. If they later fly home from Toronto Pearson, the eTA question changes. Our separate post on the Canadian eTA for visitors flying into Toronto covers that.
US citizens without a passport book
A great many guests on the American side are day-trippers from Rochester, Syracuse or Pennsylvania who never planned to leave the country. Some have a passport card, some have an enhanced driver's licence, some have only a birth certificate.
- Passport card. Valid for land and sea crossings. US Customs and Border Protection lists it under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, so it will get you home again. It is not valid for flights.
- Enhanced driver's licence. Issued by several US states, including New York. CBSA lists the US enhanced licence as acceptable proof, and CBP accepts it for the return. An ordinary licence does not count.
- Birth certificate plus photo ID. CBSA accepts it as proof of US citizenship, but CBP's land-border list for adults coming home does not include it. Expect extra questions on the return.
Our core page on documents for entering Canada keeps the current list, and its companion page on documents for entering the USA covers the return.
Green-card holders, Canadian permanent residents and dual citizens
US lawful permanent residents should show the green card at the Canadian booth. They have been exempt from the eTA since April 2022, though that only matters if they fly. Bring the passport from your country of citizenship too; it costs nothing to carry and it settles any question about identity.
Canadian permanent residents living or visiting in the US should carry the PR card or a permanent resident travel document. The card is the document Canada recognizes for re-entry.
Dual Canada–US citizens should note that, as Global Affairs Canada points out, US law requires them to enter the United States on a US passport. Many simply carry both.
A NEXUS card counts as identification at the general lanes, but a NEXUS lane is only open to a car in which every occupant, the driver included, is a member. Our post NEXUS card holders: does it help in a hired car? explains what that means for a chauffeured trip.
Travelling with children
CBSA asks adults to carry each minor's identification, and copies of any legal custody documents when that applies. Global Affairs Canada recommends a consent letter for any child under 19 travelling without both parents or decision-makers, signed by each absent parent, ideally in front of a notary, with the original rather than a photocopy. It is not a legal requirement, but officers may ask for one, and not having it can mean delay. Our post on crossing the Niagara border with children has the detail, including school and team trips.
The Rainbow Bridge crossing itself
From the main hotel blocks in Niagara Falls NY, the drive to Fallsview Boulevard is about 3.4 km (2 mi) and eight minutes of actual driving, through the Rainbow Bridge plaza and across. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists 15 car inspection lanes into Canada at the Rainbow Bridge, and the toll is charged one way only, entering Canada: as of 2026, US$6.00 or CA$8.50 for a car, set out on the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission toll page. No toll is charged entering the United States.
How long the queue takes is something nobody can promise. CBSA posts live estimates for the Rainbow Bridge on its border wait times page, and our Rainbow Bridge guide explains when the plaza tends to fill. On a summer Saturday, give dinner reservations a buffer.

What the chauffeur asks before you set off
When we pick up at a Niagara Falls NY hotel for a trip into Canada, the chauffeur will ask, before the car moves, that every passenger has their own document in hand rather than packed in a suitcase in the trunk. Documents stay with their owners; the chauffeur does not hold anyone's passport.
Three more checks at the curb:
- Nothing you have not packed yourself. CBSA's 2026 holiday advice reminds drivers they are responsible for everything inside the vehicle by land, and warns travellers never to carry items for other people. Each passenger should know what is in their own bags.
- No cannabis, in any form. Taking cannabis across the border without Health Canada authorization remains a serious criminal offence, including THC or CBD oils, even if it was bought legally in New York. CBSA's cannabis page is blunt about it.
- Cash of CA$10,000 or more must be declared. There is no limit on what you carry, only on what you fail to mention.
Coming back to the United States
Most trips from Niagara Falls NY are round trips, so the return matters as much as the outward leg. Into the US, CBP accepts for US citizens a passport, passport card, enhanced licence or trusted traveller card, and for Canadian citizens a passport, enhanced licence or NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. US and Canadian citizen children under 16 need only a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship.
Overseas visitors face more steps. CBP's I-94 page says Visa Waiver Program travellers need an approved ESTA before reaching a US land border, and those who need an I-94 can apply in advance through the CBP Link app or the I-94 website. Expect to pay US$30 for that I-94 at the land border (fee as of 2026).
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Enter the route. Put your Niagara Falls NY hotel, Amtrak station or address as the pickup and your Canadian hotel, restaurant or attraction as the drop-off, with the date and time. Add a return if you want the car to bring you back across.
- Choose the vehicle. Each class shows its fixed fare before you pay. A Standard Sedan carries up to three passengers with two large bags; a Standard SUV takes up to six with six bags.
- Add the details. Passenger count, child seats, luggage and any notes, such as a passenger travelling on a visa. Payment is secure, and your confirmation is emailed straight away.
The chauffeur crosses the bridge with you. What we cannot do is vouch for anyone's documents, so each passenger's own paperwork is their responsibility. Our cross-border car service page sets out the full division of who handles what.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Way to cross | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | 8–15 min driving plus inspection | Fixed fare via booker, shown before you pay | Sedan 2 large, SUV 6 | Families, overseas visitors, evening plans in Fallsview |
| Rideshare app | Not dependable for this trip | App pricing | Depends on the car | Rides that stay on one side of the river |
| Taxi | Only if the driver agrees to cross | Metered | Usually a sedan | Short trips within Niagara Falls NY |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | About 10–20 min on foot plus inspection | Pedestrian toll into the US only, as of 2026 | What you can carry | Day-trippers with a small bag |
| Driving yourself | Similar to a chauffeur | Toll, fuel, Canadian parking | Your own trunk | Confident drivers with a car |
The honest verdict: if you are one or two fit adults with nothing more than a day bag, walking the Rainbow Bridge is a lovely way to cross, and our post on walking across the Rainbow Bridge vs being driven explains how it works. Rideshare is the weak option. Niagara Falls International Airport states plainly that rideshare services are not allowed to cross the border. A pre-booked car wins once there are suitcases, children, a wheelchair, winter weather or a dinner booking on the other side.
Who this crossing suits
Individuals staying on the American side often book a single evening crossing for dinner or the casino, then the return. Couples like to cross at dusk for the illuminated falls and come back late without waiting at a taxi rank. Families gain the most from a car: child seats are fitted before departure and nobody has to walk a stroller across the bridge. Groups of up to twelve fit an Executive Sprinter, though every member needs their own documents, and one forgotten passport holds up everyone. See our page for families for seats and car sizes.

Frequently asked questions
Can a US citizen cross into Niagara Falls Canada with just a driver's licence?
Not with an ordinary licence. CBSA accepts a US enhanced driver's licence, which some states issue, and recommends a passport. A standard licence proves identity but not citizenship. Coming back, CBP's land-border list for adults is a passport, passport card, enhanced licence or trusted traveller card, so a regular licence alone leaves you short on the return.
Is a passport card enough for the Rainbow Bridge?
Yes, for a land crossing. Canada accepts proof of US citizenship, and CBP lists the passport card as valid for re-entering the United States by land or sea. It cannot be used for flights. If your trip continues by air from Toronto Pearson, you need a passport book.
Do children need passports to visit the Canadian side?
CBSA recommends one, but for US and Canadian citizen children a birth certificate is generally accepted as proof of citizenship. Carry each child's ID, any custody documents, and a signed consent letter if a parent is not travelling. CBP accepts a birth certificate for citizen children under 16 coming back into the US by land.
I am a green-card holder from India. What do I show at the Canadian booth?
Your US permanent resident card. CBSA says US permanent residents arriving directly from the US by land should show the card and do not need to present a passport, though carrying your Indian passport is sensible. You do not need a Canadian visitor visa as a US permanent resident; confirm on the IRCC website before you travel.
Do I need an eTA if I am driven across from New York?
Usually not. IRCC says travellers from eTA-required countries arriving by car, bus, train or boat do not need an eTA in most cases; you still need a valid passport. Visa-required nationals need a Canadian visitor visa whichever way they arrive.
Will the chauffeur check our passports?
The chauffeur will ask that everyone has their document to hand before departure, but does not inspect or hold them, and cannot judge whether they are acceptable. Each passenger presents their own document to the border services officer and answers for themselves.
What happens if someone in the car is refused entry?
The car turns back to the United States with that passenger, following the officers' directions. It is rare when documents are in order. Check every passenger's papers before booking, and mention any unusual situation, such as a pending application, in the booking notes.
