Most visitors reach Niagara Falls, Ontario from New York in the time it takes to cross a bridge, and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) inspection at the far end is usually brief when everyone is ready. "Ready" means one thing above all: the right document for each person in the vehicle. This page explains what you need to cross into Canada by land at Niagara in October 2026, nationality by nationality, with links to the official sources. NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeurs cross with you, but no chauffeur can replace a missing passport.
What do I need to cross into Canada at Niagara?
US citizens should carry a valid passport, which CBSA recommends at any age; US green-card holders show their permanent resident card; overseas visitors need a passport and, if visa-required, a Canadian visitor visa, though no eTA is needed by land. The Rainbow Bridge is under 2 km from the Falls. NiagaraFallsLimo.net crosses with you; book online.
The full official list sits on CBSA's travel documents page, last modified June 5, 2026. The sections below translate it for the four Niagara bridges.
US citizens
CBSA says that, to prove identity and citizenship, regardless of age, it recommends travelling with a valid passport. A US passport book or a US passport card both work at the land border. Without a passport, CBSA may accept other documents that show your full name, date of birth and citizenship, used alone or together, such as:
- a US enhanced driver's licence;
- a birth certificate;
- a certificate of citizenship or naturalization.
If a document has no photo, you may be asked for photo identification as well. A NEXUS card is also accepted for entry, though CBSA advises members to carry a passport too.
Remember the return leg. Whatever gets you into Canada must also get you back into the United States, where US citizens arriving by land need a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card under CBP's WHTI rules. The safest single document for both directions is the passport. See documents for entering the USA.
US permanent residents (green-card holders)
The rules here changed in 2022 and are often misquoted. US lawful permanent residents have been exempt from Canada's Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) since April 26, 2022. Arriving by land directly from the United States, CBSA says to present your US permanent resident card to the officer, and you don't need to show your passport in that case. Carry the passport anyway: you may need it elsewhere, and immigration officials on either side can ask for proof of nationality.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents coming home
Canadian citizens and permanent residents have a right to enter Canada. CBSA calls the Canadian passport the only universally accepted identification document and recommends it for every trip abroad, including day trips to the US side. Other documents may be accepted for Canadians at the land border, such as a citizenship card, a permanent resident card, an enhanced driver's licence issued by your province where one is available, or a NEXUS card. Permanent residents should carry their PR card or travel document.
If you are returning after shopping, read the section on declarations below.
Visitors from overseas
For everyone who is not a US citizen or permanent resident, CBSA calls a passport "the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification document". Beyond the passport:
- Visa-exempt nationals (for example many Europeans, Australians, Japanese and Koreans) do not need an eTA when arriving by car, bus, train or boat. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) states this on its eTA information page. The eTA is needed to fly to, or transit through, a Canadian airport. It costs CA$7 and is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires.
- Visa-required nationals need a valid Canadian visitor visa to enter by land, even if they could use an eTA for air travel.
This matters for one common itinerary: flying into New York, travelling to Niagara Falls NY, and crossing into Ontario by car. You need no eTA for the drive in, but if you will later fly out of Toronto, check whether the return routing needs one. Our international visitors guide covers itineraries that combine the two countries.
Children and teenagers
CBSA treats anyone under 18 as a minor. Its guidance for travelling with children:
- each child needs acceptable identification for their own status;
- carry copies of any legal custody documents;
- arrive at the border in the same vehicle as the child;
- carry a consent letter if you share custody and the other parent is not travelling, or if you are not the child's parent or legal guardian.
CBSA adds that a notarized letter helps avoid delays. Canada's Global Affairs department publishes a consent letter template and recommends a letter for any child under 19 who is not travelling with both parents, even on a day trip. All of this is covered step by step on our crossing with children page.
NEXUS and enhanced driver's licences
A NEXUS card can be used to enter Canada, and CBSA still recommends carrying a passport or proof of permanent residence in case you need to prove status. NEXUS members can use dedicated lanes, but only if every person in the vehicle, including the driver, is a member. On a chauffeured trip that is rarely the case, so expect the general lane. Details are on NEXUS and trusted travellers.
Enhanced driver's licences are issued by some US states and some Canadian provinces. They prove identity and citizenship at land crossings, not on international flights.
What to declare when entering Canada
Have your answers ready before you reach the booth.
- Cannabis: taking cannabis across the border in any form, including oils with THC or CBD, without a Health Canada permit or exemption remains a serious criminal offence, whatever the amount and even if it was bought legally. A doctor's prescription is not Health Canada authorization.
- Currency: CA$10,000 or more in currency or monetary instruments must be declared every time you cross. There is no limit on what you may carry.
- Goods: visitors declare goods they bring in. Returning Canadian residents should know that personal exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers; they begin after 24 hours away (CA$200, excluding alcohol and tobacco) and grow after 48 hours (CA$800, which may include alcohol and tobacco within limits).
- US-origin goods: CBSA's site carries a notice about surtaxes on certain US goods from September 8, 2026. If you plan serious shopping on the American side, read the notice before you buy.
Our duty-free and declarations guide has the allowances for alcohol and tobacco in detail. Note that the ArriveCAN Advance Declaration works only at participating airports in 2026; it cannot be used at the Niagara land crossings.
At the booth in a chauffeured car
What happens in practice:
- Your chauffeur joins the general lane at the bridge chosen on the day, usually the Rainbow Bridge from downtown Niagara Falls NY, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge from Lewiston or the I-190, or the Peace Bridge from Buffalo.
- At the booth, have every passport, card and letter in hand. Keep sunglasses off and phones down.
- The officer may speak to each passenger: where you are staying, how long, what you are bringing. Answer for yourself.
- If the officer refers the vehicle for secondary inspection, the chauffeur waits with you.
Our chauffeurs are licensed and commercially insured, and they drive these plazas routinely, but they cannot answer for your documents or your goods. Read more on our cross-border car service page.
Arriving from Buffalo Niagara International
The commonest reason Americans and overseas visitors cross into Canada by car at Niagara is a flight into Buffalo Niagara International (BUF). From BUF to Table Rock is about 42 km (26 mi), usually 40–45 minutes before the border; from BUF to Niagara-on-the-Lake about 57 km (35 mi), usually 55–60 minutes plus the border. Your chauffeur tracks the flight, meets you inside arrivals with a name board if you book meet & greet, and drives straight to your hotel, whether that is a Fallsview hotel or an inn in wine country.
Ways to reach Niagara Falls, Ontario from the US compared
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare from BUF | Uncertain; drivers may not cross, so you may have to change at the border | Surge pricing | Car boot | Travellers staying on the US side |
| Taxi from BUF | About 45 minutes plus the border, if a cross-border cab is available | Metered | Car boot | One-way trips without a schedule |
| Bus or train | Timetable, plus a group inspection for everyone aboard | Published seat fare | Usually generous | Solo travellers, flexible plans |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | A short walk plus pedestrian inspection | Small pedestrian toll | What you carry | Day visitors already in Niagara Falls NY |
| Driving yourself | Drive plus queue | Fuel, bridge toll into Canada (as of 2026 US$6 / CA$8.50 at NFBC bridges), rental cross-border terms | Whatever fits | Road-trippers |
| Private chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | Drive plus queue, door to door | Fixed fare via booker | Sized to the vehicle class | Families, groups, late flights, luggage, business |
When another option is the better choice
If you are already in Niagara Falls NY with a day bag, walking across the Rainbow Bridge is a pleasure and costs only the small pedestrian toll. A solo traveller with a flexible schedule can take an intercity bus or the Amtrak Maple Leaf. If you have rented a car in New York, check the rental terms for driving into Canada, then drive.
A chauffeur makes more sense with children in car seats, with several suitcases, with a late or delayed flight, with a group that should cross in one vehicle, or when you want to sit back after a long journey. Our comparison of chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare goes deeper.

Frequently asked questions
Can a US citizen enter Canada without a passport?
Possibly, but it is not recommended. CBSA recommends a valid passport at any age. Without one, it may accept documents proving name, date of birth and citizenship, such as a US enhanced driver's licence, a passport card or a birth certificate with photo ID. Remember you also need a valid document to re-enter the US.
Do I need an eTA to drive into Canada from New York?
No, if you are from a visa-exempt country. IRCC says these travellers do not need an eTA when arriving by car, bus, train or boat. The eTA is for flying to or through Canadian airports. Visa-required nationals still need a Canadian visitor visa by land. US citizens are exempt.
What do green-card holders need to enter Canada by car?
US permanent residents arriving by land directly from the United States show their US permanent resident card; CBSA says a passport is not required in that case. They have been exempt from the eTA since April 26, 2022. Carrying the passport as well is sensible.
Can I use my NEXUS card to enter Canada?
Yes. CBSA accepts the NEXUS card for entry and still advises members to carry a passport or proof of permanent residence. To use a NEXUS lane, everyone in the vehicle must be a member, so a chauffeured car usually uses the general lane.
What documents does a child need to enter Canada?
Each child needs identification for their status, such as a passport or birth certificate. Carry custody documents where they apply, and a consent letter if a parent or guardian is not travelling. Arrive in the same vehicle as the child. CBSA suggests notarizing the letter.
Can I bring cannabis into Canada if it is legal in New York?
No. Taking cannabis across the border in any form or amount, including CBD or THC oils, without a Health Canada permit or exemption is a serious criminal offence. A medical prescription does not count as authorization. Leave it behind.
Do I need to declare cash when entering Canada?
You must declare currency or monetary instruments worth CA$10,000 or more every time you cross. There is no limit on how much you can carry. Smaller amounts do not need to be reported.
How long does it take to cross into Canada at Niagara?
It depends on the hour and the bridge, and we never promise a time. Check the CBSA wait times table for your crossing before you leave, then add drive time to the plaza. Our border wait times guide and the border crossing hub explain how.
