Buffalo has a reputation that it does not deserve and an architecture that most visitors never see. Within a short drive of each other sit a Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie house, a newly expanded art museum, a Richardson Romanesque campus reborn as a hotel, and a waterfront where the Erie Canal once met Lake Erie. Add the city's most famous plate of food and you have a full day out from the Falls.
NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs this as a chauffeured Buffalo day trip from Niagara Falls, Ontario: collected at your hotel, across the river, a loop of the city, and back over the border before dinner. Here is the plan.
Is a Buffalo day trip from Niagara Falls Ontario worth it?
Yes, for architecture, art and food. Downtown Buffalo's Canalside is about 37 km (23 mi) from the Fallsview hotels by way of the Peace Bridge, usually 35–40 minutes plus the border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books the day "By the hour" in its online booker, with the fixed fare shown before you pay, and the chauffeur crosses both ways with you.
It is not a theme-park day. It suits travellers who enjoy buildings, galleries and a long lunch, and who have already seen the Falls from both sides.
Getting there: Peace Bridge or Rainbow Bridge?
Two crossings work, and your chauffeur chooses on the day from the live wait-time feeds.
- The Peace Bridge links Fort Erie to Buffalo's west side and lands you closest to downtown and the waterfront. It is cashless; as of 2026 the Canada-bound car toll is US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card, or US$4.00 with E-ZPass, according to the Peace Bridge Authority's toll page. No toll is charged entering the US.
- The Rainbow Bridge leads into Niagara Falls, NY, from where the I-190 runs south to Buffalo. The distance is almost identical, about 37 km (23 mi), and the time similar, around 40 minutes.
The Peace Bridge carries commercial truck lanes, which can slow some mornings; the Rainbow Bridge takes no trucks. We never promise how long a crossing takes. Our Buffalo to Niagara Falls, Canada route page has more on the road between the two cities.
A Buffalo day trip loop through the city
This is the order we usually suggest, north to south, so the afternoon ends on the waterfront.
- 10:00 – Darwin D. Martin House. About 39 km (24 mi) from Fallsview, roughly 40 minutes. Interiors are seen by tour only, so book the tour slot before you book the car.
- 12:00 – Buffalo AKG Art Museum. About 4 km (2.3 mi) from the Martin House, under ten minutes.
- 13:30 – Lunch on Main Street. The Anchor Bar at 1047 Main Street is about 4 km from the AKG.
- 15:00 – Canalside. About 3 km (2 mi) from Main Street. Walk the harbour, the naval park and the canal slips.
- 17:00 – Return. Canalside to Fallsview is about 35 km (22 mi), usually 30–40 minutes plus the border.
On an hourly booking the car waits at each stop, so a long lunch or an extra gallery hour simply moves the timetable along.
Where the car waits in Buffalo
Buffalo is an easy city to be driven in. The Martin House sits on a quiet residential parkway and the AKG has an easy curbside approach on Elmwood Avenue, so a car can set you down at the entrance, and Canalside has free public parking close to the harbour, so the chauffeur can wait nearby rather than circling. Main Street around the Anchor Bar is busier at lunchtime; we drop at the door and collect when you message. On an hourly booking you never need to know where the car went, only when you want it back.

Architecture first: Wright, the AKG and the Richardson campus
The Martin House. Frank Lloyd Wright designed the estate for Darwin D. Martin and it was built in 1903–05. The house calls it Wright's quintessential Prairie house, and to see the interiors you must buy a tour, according to its visitor page. It stands at 125 Jewett Parkway in the Parkside neighbourhood.
The Buffalo AKG Art Museum. Formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, it reopened as the Buffalo AKG in June 2023 after an expansion that added the Jeffrey E. Gundlach Building; the campus's first building dates from 1900. Check opening days on the museum's site before you go.
The Richardson Olmsted Campus. A National Historic Landmark on Forest Avenue, now home to The Richardson Hotel, which reopened in 2023 in the former Hotel Henry. It is worth a slow drive past even if you do not go in, and it sits close enough to the AKG to combine.
Wings, and where the argument starts
Ask in Buffalo where the chicken wing was invented and you will start a conversation. The Anchor Bar on Main Street is the claimant most visitors have heard of: the Bellissimo family story places it in 1964, when Teressa Bellissimo is said to have tossed fried wings in a spicy sauce for late-night guests. Other Buffalo restaurateurs have their own claims, and locals defend their favourites fiercely. For a day trip, the Anchor Bar is an easy, central stop; on a longer stay, ask your chauffeur for a second opinion.
Canalside in every season
Canalside and the Buffalo waterfront are free and open daily from dawn to dusk, with longer hours for events, according to the Buffalo Waterfront site. Summer brings concerts and kayaking, and winter brings skating. Beside the harbour you will find the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park and Explore & More, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Children's Museum, which is a strong stop if you are travelling with children.
The KeyBank Center, home of the Buffalo Sabres, sits a few steps away. On game nights traffic around the waterfront slows sharply, so check the schedule before you set the return time. If your trip is built around football, our Buffalo Bills game-day guide covers Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.
An outlet stop on the way back
If the group would rather shop than see one more building, change the route home. Instead of recrossing at the Peace Bridge, take the I-190 north from downtown Buffalo towards Niagara Falls, NY and stop at the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA on Military Road, which lists more than 100 outlet brands under one roof. From there it is about 10 km (6 mi) to Clifton Hill over the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 15–20 minutes before the border. Our guide to a shopping day at the Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA has the details on parking, timing and declaring what you buy.
Coming from Toronto rather than Niagara? Our post on a private car from Toronto to Buffalo covers the longer version of this day, including outlet shopping and flights from Buffalo Niagara International.
Coming home: the return crossing and what to declare
On the way back into Canada each passenger shows their own document. Canadian citizens should carry a Canadian passport; US citizens can show a passport or another proof of citizenship listed by the Canada Border Services Agency; other visitors need the documents they arrived with. Our page on documents for entering Canada has the full list.
Declare everything you bought in Buffalo. Canadian residents returning the same day get no personal exemption, so duty and taxes can apply to purchases. Cannabis may not cross the border in either direction.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Shopping and bags | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | Hotel to each stop and back, one car all day | Fixed fare via the booker, hourly | Trunk for purchases | Couples and small groups |
| Amtrak Maple Leaf train | One daily departure; Niagara Falls ON station to Buffalo-Exchange Street | Published Amtrak fare | Suitcase allowance | Solo travellers with a flexible day |
| Rideshare | Easy inside Buffalo | Surge pricing; many drivers will not cross the bridge | Small trunk | Hops between Buffalo stops |
| Taxi | Metered inside the city | Metered | Varies | One stop in town |
| Driving yourself | Flexible | Fuel, toll, city parking | Your trunk | Confident drivers with a car |
The honest verdict: Amtrak's daily Maple Leaf stops at both Niagara Falls, Ontario and Buffalo-Exchange Street, a walk from Niagara Square, so a solo traveller with time can do this by train, though one train a day each way leaves little room for a full loop. If you are already staying in Buffalo, rideshare between the Martin House, the AKG and Canalside is perfectly sensible. The difficulty is the border. Getting a rideshare from Niagara Falls, Ontario to Buffalo and back is not reliable, and a day with four stops multiplies the waiting. A pre-booked driver who crosses with you, waits at each stop and drives you home is the calm way to do it, especially for couples who want a long lunch.

Who it suits
Couples are the classic fit: Wright, a gallery and lunch make an unhurried day, and our couples page has more ideas like it. Families should swap the Martin House for the children's museum and the naval park at Canalside. Groups of friends often build the day around a Sabres game or a brewery stop. Individuals with an interest in architecture will find enough for two days; our post on using Buffalo hotels as a Niagara base covers staying over.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Buffalo from Niagara Falls, Ontario?
Downtown Buffalo's Canalside is about 37 km (23 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, usually 35–40 minutes of driving via the Peace Bridge or the Rainbow Bridge and I-190. Add the time for the border inspection, which varies by day; we never promise a crossing time.
Which bridge is better for a Buffalo day trip?
The Peace Bridge lands closest to downtown and the waterfront. The Rainbow Bridge plus I-190 is almost the same distance and avoids the Peace Bridge's truck traffic. Your chauffeur picks from the live wait-time feeds on the morning.
Do I need to book the Martin House in advance?
The house says interiors are seen only by purchasing a tour, so reserve your slot first and build the car booking around it. Check its hours page for closed days before you travel.
Is the Anchor Bar really where Buffalo wings were invented?
It is the best-known claimant. The Bellissimo family's story dates the first wings to 1964, but other local restaurateurs have their own claims. It is a central, easy stop on a day trip either way.
Can we visit Buffalo and the US side of the Falls on the same day?
Yes. Cross at the Rainbow Bridge, spend the morning at Niagara Falls State Park, take I-190 south to Buffalo, and return over the Peace Bridge. It is a long day, so drop one of the Buffalo stops.
What does a chauffeured Buffalo day trip cost?
The online booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your pickup, stops and vehicle before you pay. An hourly booking suits a loose plan; a multi-stop booking suits a fixed list.
Can we bring purchases back to Canada?
Yes, but declare them. Canadian residents returning the same day get no personal exemption, so duty and taxes may apply. Visitors should declare everything too. Cannabis cannot cross in either direction.
