For many couples staying on the Canadian side, the shopping trip across the river is as much a part of the weekend as the boat ride. The Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA is the usual destination: an indoor centre at 1900 Military Road in Niagara Falls, New York, that describes itself as one of the largest indoor outlet centres in the country, with more than 100 outlet brands. It is close, it is weatherproof, and it is a genuinely different shopping experience from the open-air outlet mall in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The complication is the border, twice. You cross into the United States in the morning and back into Canada with bags in the afternoon, and Canada's customs rules for returning residents are stricter on short trips than many shoppers expect. This guide from NiagaraFallsLimo.net walks through the day: route, documents, the declaration on the way home, and when it makes sense to let a chauffeur handle the crossing.
How far is Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA from the Canadian side?
Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA, 1900 Military Road, Niagara Falls, New York, is about 10–11 km (6–7 mi) from the Fallsview hotels via the Rainbow Bridge, usually 20 minutes plus border time. From Toronto it is about 135 km (85 mi). NiagaraFallsLimo.net books cross-border shopping days online at a fixed fare.
From Fallsview or Clifton Hill, the usual route is the Rainbow Bridge, then a short run east through Niagara Falls, New York. Once you are on the US side, the mall is about 10 km (6 mi), 15–20 minutes from the bridge plaza. From downtown Toronto the trip is about 135 km (85 mi), usually 1 h 45 off-peak plus the crossing, and many Toronto shoppers use the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge instead. If you are flying out of Buffalo Niagara International afterwards, the airport is about 36 km (22 mi), around 35–40 minutes, from the mall, which makes "shop, then fly" a tidy last day.
What is at Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls, and when it is open
As listed on the official Fashion Outlets site in October 2026, opening hours are 11 am to 7 pm Monday to Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm Friday and Saturday, and 11 am to 6 pm Sunday. Holiday hours differ. Brands named on the site include Nike Clearance Store, Coach, Pandora, Adidas, Under Armour, H&M, Polo Ralph Lauren, Kate Spade New York, Michael Kors, Vera Bradley, Columbia and Timberland, and there is a food court with quick-service options.
Because it is enclosed, it works in every season. In practice the weekday mornings are calm and the Saturday afternoons are not, which also happens to match the busiest time at the bridges.
Documents for the day, for every person in the car
The chauffeur crosses with you, but each passenger must carry their own valid documents. US Customs and Border Protection's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page sets out what works at a land border:
- Canadian citizens: a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence, or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card.
- US citizens: a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card.
- Children under 16 who are Canadian or US citizens: a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. If a child is travelling without both parents, carry a consent letter.
- Most other visitors: a passport plus an approved ESTA for Visa Waiver travellers, or a US visa, and an I-94. CBP now issues land-border I-94s electronically and encourages travellers to apply in advance through the CBP Link app or the I-94 website.
Our documents for entering the USA page has the detail. NEXUS lanes are available only if every person in the vehicle is a member carrying their card, chauffeur included, so most shopping parties use the general lanes. Tolls on the Niagara bridges are collected only on the way into Canada, per the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission toll page.

Coming home: Canadian duty rules for returning residents
This is where outlet days go wrong. The Canada Border Services Agency's declaration page is plain about it:
- Same-day trips: personal exemptions "do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers". Everything you bought is declared, and taxes and any duty apply.
- Away 24 hours or more: up to CA$200 in goods may come in free, excluding alcohol and tobacco. If your goods are worth more than CA$200, you lose the exemption and pay on the full amount.
- Away 48 hours or more: up to CA$800 in goods, which may include alcohol and tobacco within limits, and up to a further CA$300 of goods at a 7% beneficial duty rate.
- Made in North America: no duty on personal-use goods marked as made in Canada, the US or Mexico, though GST or HST still applies.
- Surtaxes: CBSA notes that Canada is applying surtaxes on certain US goods from September 8, 2026. If you are planning a large purchase, check the list first.
Values are reported in Canadian dollars, exemptions cannot be pooled between family members, and the goods must be with you. Declare everything, keep the receipts handy in one bag, and let the officer decide. Our duty-free and declarations page and the post on duty-free shopping at the Niagara bridges explain the rest.
US residents returning home from a Canadian stay do not face this on the way back from the mall, of course; the mall is at home. Their customs questions come on the return from Canada at the end of the trip.
A shopping day that works
- Leave by 9:30 am. Cross the Rainbow Bridge before the late-morning build-up and arrive near opening.
- Shop for three to four hours. Agree a meeting point inside the mall and a pickup time at the main entrance.
- Lunch at the mall or in Niagara Falls, New York. The State Park and the American Falls are back toward the bridge; our Niagara Falls, New York visitor guide has ideas.
- Return by mid-afternoon. Summer weekend afternoons are typically the slowest time on the bridges. We never promise a crossing time, but an earlier return improves your odds.
- Receipts in one place. Make the declaration short and simple.
Money, receipts and bags: small things that save time
- Prices are in US dollars. Check your card's foreign-transaction terms before the trip, and remember that the CBSA wants values declared in Canadian dollars on the way home.
- Keep every receipt. One envelope for the whole group makes the declaration at the booth quick and accurate. Exemptions cannot be combined between family members, so note whose purchases are whose.
- Leave the tags on. New goods that are obviously new are easier to describe and value.
- Think about the bags before you buy. Large boxes, strollers and bulky winter coats fill a trunk quickly. If the group is shopping seriously, choose an SUV over a sedan when you book.
- Food and plants. If you pick up snacks or fresh produce, declare them. Both countries regulate food, plants and animal products at the border.
- Gifts count too. Anything bought for someone else is still declared by the person carrying it.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Bags | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur, cross-border | About 20 minutes each way plus the bridge; car waits | Fixed fare via booker | Trunk space for a day's shopping | Couples, families, groups with many bags |
| Driving yourself | Same route; your own parking at the mall | Fuel, tolls into Canada | Your trunk | Locals with documents and a car |
| Rideshare app | Cross-border trips are not dependable | Surge pricing at busy times | Limited | Getting around within one country |
| Taxi | Possible if the company crosses; ask first | Metered | Limited | Single trips with light shopping |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge, then a ride | Slow; mall is 10 km from the bridge | Small pedestrian toll at the bridge | Hard with bags | Budget day-trippers |
The honest verdict: if you live in the region, have your documents and a car, drive. It is a short trip. Rideshare is not a good fit, because cross-border trips are not dependable and you may be left on the wrong side with your shopping. A pre-booked chauffeur is the comfortable choice for visitors without a car, families with children's documents to manage, and groups who want one vehicle, room for bags, and a known driver waiting at the door when the shopping is done. Our cross-border car service page explains how those trips run.
Who this suits
Individuals shopping alone appreciate having the car hold the bags while they keep going. Couples on a weekend in Niagara often fit the outlets in on the Saturday morning; see our notes for couples. Families should pack each child's birth certificate and, if a parent is not travelling, a consent letter. Groups of friends fit in an SUV for six or an Executive Sprinter for twelve, though a Sprinter carries only carry-on sized luggage, so leave room for the shopping. Last day in Niagara? Combine the outlets with a drop-off at Buffalo Niagara International.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Enter the route. Your hotel as pickup, Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA as the stop, and your hotel (or BUF) as the drop-off; choose "By the hour" so the car waits.
- Choose a vehicle. Pick the class that fits the group and the shopping; each shows its fixed all-in fare.
- Add passengers and pay. Note any children and their seats, pay securely, and the confirmation arrives by email.
It is all done on the online booker. If you would rather stay in Canada, our post on the Outlet Collection at Niagara covers the open-air outlet mall in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and the Rainbow Bridge page explains the crossing itself.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA?
At 1900 Military Road, Niagara Falls, New York 14304. From the Rainbow Bridge plaza it is about 10 km (6 mi), usually 15–20 minutes by car; from the Fallsview hotels on the Canadian side allow about 20 minutes of driving plus the bridge.
Do Canadians need a passport to shop at the US outlets?
Canadians need a valid passport, an enhanced driver's licence, or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card to enter the United States by land. Canadian children under 16 can use a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. Every person in the vehicle needs their own document.
How much can I bring back to Canada duty-free after a day trip?
Nothing under a personal exemption. CBSA says exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers, so all goods are declared and taxed. After 24 hours away, up to CA$200 can come in free (excluding alcohol and tobacco); after 48 hours, up to CA$800.
Do I pay duty on clothes bought in the US?
Goods marked as made in Canada, the US or Mexico generally enter without duty, though GST or HST applies. Goods made elsewhere may carry duty, and Canada is applying surtaxes on certain US goods from September 8, 2026. Declare everything and keep your receipts.
What are the mall's hours?
As listed in October 2026: 11 am to 7 pm Monday to Thursday, 10 am to 8 pm Friday and Saturday, and 11 am to 6 pm Sunday, with different holiday hours. Check the official site before you go, especially around US holidays.
Can a rideshare take us from Canada to the US outlets?
It is not dependable. Cross-border rideshare trips are hit and miss, and you risk being without a ride back across the bridge with your shopping. A pre-booked car that crosses with you and waits is the more reliable plan.
Which bridge is best for the outlets?
From Fallsview or Clifton Hill, the Rainbow Bridge is the most direct. From Toronto or Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is often used. The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is for NEXUS members only, with every occupant a member.
