Marineland Is Closed: What Families Do Instead Around Niagara

For decades, many Ontario families built a Niagara trip around Marineland. It is not coming back. The good news is that the region still offers animals, water and big thrills, and most of it fits into one well-planned day.

Search "Marineland Niagara Falls" today and you still find old ticket pages, ride lists and decades of holiday photos. Parents who went as children want to take their own. So the first job of this post is a plain statement: Marineland is closed for good. The second is more useful. Below are the family attractions that are open now, where they are, how they fit together, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net gets a family between them without a parking hunt at every stop.

Is Marineland, Niagara Falls, still open?

No. Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, closed to the public in 2024 and its last whales left in 2026. Families now combine Bird Kingdom, the Butterfly Conservatory, the Whirlpool Aero Car and indoor waterparks, all within about 10 km (6 mi) of the Falls. NiagaraFallsLimo.net links them by car; book online.

The timeline, from the reporting we checked:

  • 2024: the park had a short final summer season with no rides and then closed to the public. Its owner, Marie Holer, died in September 2024, as reported by CP24.
  • 2026: the last six belugas began their move on 31 August, completing the transfer of 30 belugas and 4 dolphins to five aquariums in the United States and Spain, according to CBC News.
  • What next: the property is to be sold. Details of any buyer or redevelopment have not been confirmed on an official source, so we will not guess.

If you see a website still selling Marineland tickets, treat it as out of date. The same goes for old itineraries that pair Marineland with a morning at the Falls; the morning part still works, the afternoon needs a new plan, which is what the rest of this post sets out.

What families miss about Marineland, Niagara Falls, and where to find it now

Marineland offered three things in one gate: animals, rides and a full day out. No single attraction replaces all three, but each is covered nearby.

Animals up close. Bird Kingdom, the Butterfly Conservatory, and across the river the Aquarium of Niagara.

Thrills. The Whirlpool Aero Car over the gorge, WildPlay's zipline, Niagara City Cruises into the mist, and the slides at two indoor waterparks.

A whole day in one place. The waterparks and Clifton Hill are closest to that model. Niagara Parks attractions offer the same with a little more movement, which is where a car helps.

The animal stops

Bird Kingdom

At 5651 River Road, close to the Falls, Bird Kingdom bills itself as the biggest aviary of its kind anywhere, with tropical birds flying loose through an indoor rainforest, parrot encounters, nocturnal animals in its Night Jungle and a lorikeet-feeding area. It is open all year and the attraction suggests allowing an hour or more. Note that it is not a nut-free facility. Our post on Bird Kingdom and rainy-day attractions covers it in more depth.

The Butterfly Conservatory

Set inside the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, it is roughly a 15–20 minute drive (about 10 km, 6 mi) down the Parkway from Table Rock. More than 3,000 butterflies live in an 11,000-square-foot conservatory with 180 m of paths. It is open year-round and fully accessible, which makes it easy with strollers. See our Butterfly Conservatory page.

The Aquarium of Niagara, across the border

On the New York side, inside Niagara Falls State Park, the Aquarium of Niagara houses more than 1,500 animals, and its second building, Great Lakes 360, opened in 2024. It is the closest thing to a marine-life visit in the region now. Getting there means crossing the Rainbow Bridge, and every family member needs their own valid travel documents, children included. If a child is travelling without both parents, Global Affairs Canada recommends a consent letter; see our page on crossing the border with children. Our post on the Aquarium of Niagara and other US-side family stops has the details. Bridge queues vary hour to hour, and no one can promise a crossing time.

Plan a family day with a driver

The thrill stops

  • Whirlpool Aero Car. A cable car that has crossed the gorge above the Niagara Whirlpool since 1916. It crosses the international border four times without leaving Canada, so no passport is needed. Season: April to November. Our Whirlpool Aero Car page has timings.
  • Niagara City Cruises. The Niagara Parks boat tour into the mist of the Horseshoe Falls, April to November. See Niagara City Cruises.
  • WildPlay Zipline to the Falls. For riders over seven, a 670 m (2,200 ft) line past the American Falls. Our zipline planning post explains the rules.
  • Niagara Takes Flight. A flying-theatre ride at Table Rock, open year-round, for riders at least 100 cm tall.

The all-day stops

Two indoor waterparks give the "one gate, all day" feel Marineland used to:

  • Fallsview Indoor Waterpark at 5685 Falls Avenue: sixteen slides, an indoor wave pool, and indoor walkways to three hotels. Our waterpark group transfers post covers getting a big family there.
  • Great Wolf Lodge Niagara Falls at 3950 Victoria Avenue: a resort with a 100,000-square-foot indoor water park kept at 84 degrees. Details are on our Great Wolf Lodge Niagara page.

Clifton Hill, a block from the Falls, fills the gaps with the Niagara SkyWheel and other attractions along the street.

Three one-day plans

Plan A: animals and the gorge (April to November)

  1. 9:30 Bird Kingdom, River Road.
  2. 11:15 Whirlpool Aero Car, a few kilometres north on the Parkway.
  3. 12:30 Lunch along the Parkway or back near Table Rock.
  4. 14:00 Butterfly Conservatory and the Botanical Gardens.
  5. 16:00 Back to the hotel for a rest, or Niagara City Cruises if energy remains.

Plan B: across the river

  1. 9:00 Leave early to cross the Rainbow Bridge.
  2. 10:00 Aquarium of Niagara in the State Park.
  3. 12:30 Lunch on the US side.
  4. 14:00 Cross back to Canada for Bird Kingdom or a waterpark session.

This plan depends on documents for everyone and on the bridge. Allow generous time and keep the afternoon flexible.

Plan C: winter

  1. 10:00 Butterfly Conservatory: warm, humid and bright when it is grey outside.
  2. 12:00 Lunch at Table Rock, then Journey Behind the Falls and Niagara Takes Flight.
  3. 15:00 Waterpark until dinner.
  4. After dark The illumination comes on at 4:30 pm in November and December, and the Winter Festival of Lights runs from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027.

With a car booked by the hour, each plan has no outdoor walk longer than a few minutes, and nobody needs to find parking four times. For more ideas, browse our list of things to do in Niagara Falls.

Getting a family around: the practical bits

  • Child seats: add them as booker extras (child, toddler or booster) and give ages in the notes.
  • Strollers: fold into the boot of an SUV; mention them when booking.
  • Vehicle: a Standard SUV (Suburban / Yukon XL or similar) seats six with six bags. Two families together fit an Executive Sprinter, which seats twelve but takes carry-on bags only.
  • Spare clothes: boats, Journey Behind the Falls and the zipline all mean spray. Keep a dry set in the car.
  • Time with grandparents: the Butterfly Conservatory, Floral Showhouse and Power Station are fully accessible, with benches.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip

A family day with three or four stops spread along the Parkway is where the transport choice matters most.

ModeDoor-to-door timeCost noteLuggageBest for
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)5–20 min between stops, plus waitsSurge pricing on busy daysSmall bags; car seats rarely offeredAdults making one or two trips
Taxi5–20 min between stopsMeteredSmall bagsA single trip to one attraction
WEGO busSet by the timetable and stop spacing24- or 48-hour passFolded strollersFamilies with time and patience
Driving yourself5–20 minPay-and-display lots at most stopsAnythingFamilies with a car and their own seats
Private chauffeur5–20 min; driver stays with the familyFixed fare via bookerStrollers, seats, dry clothesFamilies stacking several stops or crossing the border

The honest verdict: if you are staying on Falls Avenue and spending the day at the waterpark and Clifton Hill, you barely need transport at all; walk. WEGO is a decent option for patient families in summer. Where a chauffeur clearly earns its place is in Plan A and Plan B: car seats fitted, a driver waiting at the Aero Car, and a vehicle that crosses the bridge with you. Our guide to chauffeur, taxi and rideshare explains the differences across the region.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Set the day. Choose "By the hour" and enter your hotel as the start. List your planned stops in the notes.
  2. Pick the vehicle. You see the fixed fare for each class before paying. SUVs suit most families; Sprinters suit two families together.
  3. Add the family. Passenger count, child seats, stroller, and any plan to cross the border. Pay securely; confirmation comes by email.

Arriving by air? Toronto Pearson is about 125–135 km (78–84 mi) from the Falls, usually 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 off-peak.

Who it suits

Families with children of different ages benefit most, because the plans mix quiet animal stops with louder thrills. Our families page covers seats and strollers. Grandparents travelling with grandchildren appreciate the accessible conservatory and the door-to-door drops. Groups of several families can share a Sprinter. Couples who once visited Marineland as children often find the Aero Car and the gorge more memorable now.

Frequently asked questions

Will Marineland reopen?

There is no sign that it will. The park closed to the public in 2024, and its last whales and dolphins were moved to other aquariums by the end of summer 2026. Reports say the property is to be sold, but no buyer or plan has been confirmed by an official source.

What happened to the Marineland animals?

CBC News reported that the last six belugas began moving on 31 August 2026, completing the transfer of 30 belugas and 4 dolphins to five aquariums: in Chicago, San Diego, San Antonio, Atlanta and Valencia, Spain. No whales or dolphins are known to remain in captivity in Canada.

Is there an aquarium near Niagara Falls, Ontario?

The nearest is the Aquarium of Niagara in Niagara Falls State Park on the New York side, with more than 1,500 animals. It requires a border crossing, so every family member needs valid documents. On the Canadian side, Bird Kingdom and the Butterfly Conservatory are the main animal attractions.

What is the best family attraction in Niagara Falls now?

It depends on the children. Younger ones tend to love Bird Kingdom and the Butterfly Conservatory; older ones the Whirlpool Aero Car, the boat cruise and the zipline. For a full day under one roof, the Fallsview Indoor Waterpark or Great Wolf Lodge come closest to the old Marineland day.

Can we visit several attractions in one day without a car?

Yes, with WEGO, Niagara Parks' visitor bus, though it involves waits and walking between stops. With young children, car seats and a stroller, a car with a driver is usually easier, especially if the day includes the Butterfly Conservatory, which is about 10 km north of the Falls.

Do we need passports for the Whirlpool Aero Car?

No. Niagara Parks says the Aero Car crosses the international border four times without leaving Canada, so no passport is needed. You do need documents for the Aquarium of Niagara or anything else on the US side.

Is the Butterfly Conservatory good for toddlers?

Yes, for most. Paths are paved with ramps and benches, strollers move easily, and the warm, humid glasshouse is a pleasant place on a cold day. Butterflies land on visitors, which small children tend to love. Allow about an hour, and pair it with a walk in the surrounding Botanical Gardens in fine weather.
