Zipline to the Falls (WildPlay): Planning an Adventure Morning

The WildPlay zipline in Niagara Falls is over in under a minute of flying, but a group adventure morning has more moving parts: waivers, footwear rules, a no-loose-items policy and a second activity up the river. Here is how to run it smoothly.

Group adventures fall apart in the gaps between activities. Ten friends arrive in three cars, two are late, one forgot proper shoes, someone's phone is in a pocket it should not be in, and by the time everyone has ridden the line, lunch is gone and the afternoon activity is an hour behind. WildPlay's Zipline to the Falls is one of the most memorable things to do in Niagara, and the WildPlay zipline, Niagara Falls' fastest way into the gorge, deserves a plan that keeps the group together. This guide covers the zipline itself, the rules that trip groups up, a second activity for the afternoon, and how one vehicle from NiagaraFallsLimo.net moves everyone between them.

WildPlay zipline, Niagara Falls: where does it start, and how do groups get there?

WildPlay's Zipline to the Falls starts at Grand View Marketplace, 5920 Niagara Parkway, Niagara Falls, Ontario, about 1.5 km (1 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, usually 3–5 minutes by car. NiagaraFallsLimo.net carries groups of up to 12 in a Sprinter to the launch and on to the next activity; book online.

Niagara Parks, whose official supplier WildPlay is, describes the ride: 670 metres (2,200 feet) down into the gorge, past the American Falls, landing on an observation deck at the base of the Horseshoe Falls. It is a hands-free, fully guided ride, open to guests over the age of seven, and it is seasonal.

The launch at Grand View Marketplace is on the river side of the Parkway, near the foot of Clifton Hill. Rounded distances:

  • Fallsview Boulevard hotels to the launch: about 1.3 km (0.8 mi), 3–5 minutes.
  • Falls Avenue and Clifton Hill hotels: about 2 km (1.2 mi), 4–5 minutes, or a short downhill walk.
  • Downtown Toronto to the launch: about 130 km (81 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak.
  • The launch to WildPlay's Whirlpool Adventure Course at Thompson Point: about 5 km (3 mi), 7–10 minutes.

The WildPlay zipline rules that catch groups out

From WildPlay's FAQ, the points that most often cause delays on a group day:

  1. Waivers in advance. Every rider completes a waiver online, then checks in at the blue Zipline Check-In kiosk. Have one person chase the group for waivers the night before.
  2. Proper shoes. Closed-toe shoes secured to the foot. No flip-flops, Crocs, slides or flats. This is the item most often forgotten on a summer day.
  3. Nothing loose. Jewellery and loose objects come off before the ride, and phones may not be used on the line under any circumstances. GoPro use is limited to approved mounts, at the guide's discretion.
  4. Weight and age. WildPlay's general listing says riders under 100 lb (46 kg) ride tandem with a guide, and its FAQ gives a 275 lb maximum for the Niagara harnesses, though another line on the same page says 300 lb. Confirm with WildPlay if anyone in the group is near either limit.
  5. Rain or shine. The zipline operates in the rain, so dress for the weather rather than hoping for a cancellation.
  6. Group numbers. For groups of 15 or more, WildPlay asks for large changes in numbers at least three days ahead.

Lockers are available on site. With a chauffeur, there is a simpler option: bags, jackets and spare shoes stay in the vehicle, and the group walks to the kiosk with nothing to stow.

An adventure morning, minute by minute

This outline assumes a group of ten, staying in Fallsview, booked by the hour, in season.

8:45. One pickup. Everyone meets in the hotel lobby. The chauffeur loads bags and confirms the plan.

9:00. Grand View Marketplace. Drop-off at the launch area. Check in at the kiosk; waivers are already done. Walk-ins are fitted into the next available slot, so a booked time is safer for a group.

9:15 – 10:30. Ride in turns. Riders go in sequence, so agree a meeting point for afterwards and let the guides direct you from the landing deck.

10:45. Niagara City Cruises, next door. The boat into the mist of the Horseshoe Falls leaves from the same stretch of riverbank, April to November. Our post on Niagara City Cruises by chauffeur covers timings and ponchos, and our Niagara City Cruises page has more.

12:15. Lunch. The car is waiting at the marketplace. A short drive to a Clifton Hill or Fallsview restaurant, with dry clothes from the boot.

14:00. Second adventure. Drive 7–10 minutes north to Thompson Point for the WildPlay Whirlpool Adventure Course, or to the White Water Walk for a calmer river-level boardwalk beside the Class 6 rapids. See our White Water Walk page.

16:30. Back to the hotel, or straight on to dinner.

Not everyone wants to ride

Most groups include someone who would rather watch. That is easy to arrange. The line runs above the gorge within sight of the riverside promenade, so spectators can watch riders head down toward the Horseshoe Falls. Non-riders also have plenty close by: Niagara City Cruises is on the same riverbank, Clifton Hill is a short walk uphill, and the car can take anyone who prefers a quiet hour to the Floral Showhouse or the Table Rock Welcome Centre and come back for the riders.

If the group has driven its own cars to Niagara, Niagara Parks' Rainbow Bridge Pay and Display lot is about a ten-minute walk from the zipline and the boat, according to its parking and getting-around page. Leaving the cars at the hotel and moving together in one vehicle is usually simpler.

The second WildPlay site: Whirlpool Adventure Course

At Thompson Point, a few kilometres north of the Falls and overlooking the Niagara Whirlpool, WildPlay runs its Whirlpool Adventure Course. Niagara Parks describes three self-paced obstacle courses with climbing, ziplining and jumping circuits, plus an optional Extreme Course that includes a 40-foot "What's to Fear Jump". WildPlay's own site describes four levels of aerial courses and ziplines. The course is seasonal and has its own Pay and Display lot.

For groups, it is the better choice for a longer session: the zipline is a single, spectacular ride, while the adventure course fills a couple of hours and lets the group split by ability. The Niagara Glen trailhead and the Whirlpool Aero Car are both within a few minutes' drive, so non-climbers in the group have their own options.

Choosing the vehicle for an active group

VehiclePassengersBagsFit for an adventure day
Standard SUV (Suburban / Yukon XL)up to 66Small groups with spare clothes and day bags
Executive Sprinter (Mercedes-Benz)up to 12carry-on onlyThe usual choice: one vehicle, soft bags under seats
Party Busup to 122Birthday or bachelor groups; availability confirmed at booking
Stretch SUV Limousineup to 16minimalLarger celebrations travelling light
Coachon requeston requestSchool, club and corporate team groups

For an active day, the Sprinter's "carry-on only" means soft backpacks with a change of clothes, not wheeled cases. If the group is arriving from Toronto with weekend luggage, drop it at the hotel first. Our stretch limo and Sprinter page and group transportation page compare the options in more detail.

A note on celebrations: drinks stay out of the vehicle, as the region's by-law for hired cars requires, and nobody should be on an adventure course after one anyway. Bachelor and bachelorette groups often finish the day with dinner and a night out; our bachelor and bachelorette service handles the evening leg, and the post on Niagara Speedway go-karts suggests a Clifton Hill finale.

Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip

The zipline sits at the foot of Clifton Hill, so many visitors simply walk. For a group moving between several activities, the picture changes.

ModeDoor-to-door timeCost noteLuggageBest for
Walking10–20 min from Clifton Hill and FallsviewFreeWhat you carryPairs and small groups staying close
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)3–10 min per hop; several cars for a groupSurge pricing at peakSmall bagsTwo or three people on one leg
Taxi3–10 min per hopMetered; several cabs for a groupSmall bagsShort hops for small parties
WEGO busTimetable dependent24- or 48-hour passSmall bagsGroups watching costs, with time to spare
Private chauffeur3–10 min; one vehicle, waits at each stopFixed fare via bookerSpare clothes, shoes, bags stay aboardGroups of 6–16 stacking activities

The honest verdict: two friends staying on Clifton Hill should walk down to the zipline and save the transport budget for dinner. A group of ten or twelve is different. Three rideshares at every hop means three waits, three fares and someone always left behind. One Sprinter keeps the group together, holds the bags so nothing loose goes up the tower, and gets everyone to Thompson Point and back. Group organisers may also find our Niagara chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare breakdown useful.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Enter pickup and activities. Your hotel to "WildPlay Zipline to the Falls, 5920 Niagara Parkway", with Thompson Point and lunch as further stops. "By the hour" suits a full adventure day.
  2. Choose the vehicle. Compare the fixed, all-in fares listed for each class. Sprinters suit groups of up to twelve.
  3. Add the group details. Number of passengers, bags, any celebration notes. Pay by card; the confirmation lands in your inbox.

Coming in from out of town? Groups landing at Toronto Pearson face about 125–135 km (78–84 mi) to the Falls, usually 1 h 20 – 1 h 40 off-peak; plan the zipline for the following morning.

Who it suits

Groups of friends, teams and celebrations get the most from this plan; see our groups page. Families with children over seven can ride together, then let younger siblings enjoy the boat or the Aero Car. Couples looking for a story to tell often pair the zipline with a helicopter flight; our post on the Niagara helicopter ride covers the heliport. Individuals can ride solo and use the car for the longer hop up to Thompson Point.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the zipline at Niagara Falls?

The WildPlay Zipline to the Falls runs 670 metres (2,200 feet) from Grand View Marketplace into the gorge, past the American Falls, to an observation deck at the base of the Horseshoe Falls. The ride itself is quick; allow time for check-in, gearing up and riding in turns.

What is the minimum age for the Niagara Falls zipline?

Niagara Parks says the zipline is for guests over the age of seven. WildPlay's FAQ adds that riders under 100 lb (46 kg) ride tandem with a guide. Check WildPlay's current rules before booking for a child near the age limit.

Is there a weight limit on the WildPlay zipline?

WildPlay's FAQ gives a maximum weight of 275 lb for the Niagara Falls harnesses, while another general listing mentions 300 lb. Because the two differ, confirm the current limit with WildPlay directly if anyone in your group is close to it.

Can I bring my phone on the zipline?

Not in use. WildPlay says phone use on the ride is not permitted under any circumstances, and loose objects and jewellery must be removed. Lockers are available on site, or leave phones and bags with your chauffeur in the vehicle.

Does the zipline run in the rain?

Yes. WildPlay says the Zipline to the Falls operates rain or shine, so dress for the weather. Thunderstorms and other severe conditions are a separate question; check with WildPlay on the day if the forecast looks bad.

Can we do the zipline and the Whirlpool Adventure Course on the same day?

Yes. The two WildPlay sites are about 5 km apart along the Niagara Parkway, roughly 7–10 minutes by car. A by-the-hour booking keeps the vehicle with your group between them, with lunch in the middle.

What should we wear for the zipline?

Closed-toe shoes secured to the foot, comfortable clothes suited to the weather, and nothing loose. Flip-flops, Crocs, slides and flats are not allowed. Bring a dry layer for afterwards, especially if you plan the boat cruise next.
