Parents planning a Niagara holiday often find themselves comparing two maps. One shows the hotels above the Horseshoe Falls. The other shows Buffalo hotels near Niagara Falls, a short flight from home, close to Buffalo Niagara International Airport and sometimes easier to book on a busy weekend. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives families between the two every day, so here is a straight account of what basing yourself in Buffalo really involves.
Is Buffalo a good base for visiting Niagara Falls, Canada?
Buffalo works as a Niagara base if you accept a daily border crossing. Downtown Buffalo hotels are about 30–35 km (20 mi) from the Canadian Falls, usually 30–40 minutes of driving plus the bridge inspection. NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs those daily transfers with child seats if needed; the booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.
It is not the right base for everyone. A family that wants to walk out of the hotel to the fireworks every night should stay in Niagara Falls, Ontario. A family that wants Buffalo's museums, a Sabres or Bills game, an easy airport and two or three Canadian-side days will find Buffalo perfectly workable.
The case for Buffalo
- The airport is close. Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) is about 18 km from downtown, roughly 20 minutes by road. BUF says it offers up to 100 nonstop flights a day to 31 destinations. Our Buffalo Niagara airport transfers page covers arrivals.
- A city in its own right. The free Canalside waterfront is open year-round, the Buffalo AKG Art Museum reopened in 2023 with its new building, and KeyBank Center hosts the Sabres. Our page on Buffalo Canalside and the waterfront has more.
- Room choice on busy dates. When Fallsview is full for a long weekend or a big concert, Buffalo often still has rooms. Compare rates for your own dates; they move constantly.
- Two countries, one trip. Families from overseas who want to say they saw both the American and Canadian sides can do so from a single hotel.
The case against
- Every Canadian day has two inspections. One entering Canada, one coming back into the US. Neither is under anyone's control, and no honest driver promises a time.
- Late evenings are less spontaneous. Staying for the 10 p.m. fireworks means crossing back near midnight with tired children.
- Documents every day. Each person carries their own valid travel document every time you cross. Lose a passport on day two and your Canadian plans stop.
- Shopping limits. US residents returning after less than 48 hours have a $200 exemption per person, which family members cannot combine, according to CBP. Canadians on same-day trips home have no exemption at all.
Hotels families use in Buffalo
These are downtown and near-downtown properties with verified addresses. We list no ratings or room counts unless the hotel publishes them.
- The Westin Buffalo, 250 Delaware Avenue, downtown, part of Delaware North's headquarters project (Visit Buffalo).
- Embassy Suites by Hilton Buffalo, 200 Delaware Avenue, next door; suite layouts suit families.
- Curtiss Hotel, 210 Franklin Street, 68 rooms in the restored Harlow C. Curtiss building (Curtiss Hotel).
- Hotel at the Lafayette, 391 Washington Street, in a building dating to 1904.

From the Delaware Avenue hotels, the Fallsview hotels are about 34 km by road; from The Richardson, Clifton Hill is about 31 km. Both usually take 30–40 minutes off-peak before the border.
Which bridge from Buffalo: Peace or Rainbow?
There are two sensible ways across.
The Peace Bridge leaves Buffalo's west side for Fort Erie, Ontario, then joins the QEW north to Niagara Falls. It is the natural choice from downtown. The bridge is now cashless: as of 2026 the car toll into Canada is US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card, or US$4.00 with E-ZPass, per the Peace Bridge Authority. No toll is charged entering the US. Its Canada-bound NEXUS lanes run 24 hours. Our Peace Bridge page has lanes and approaches, and the journal post on Peace Bridge wait-time patterns by day and season explains how queues build.
The Rainbow Bridge is reached via I-190 north through Grand Island and lands directly at Clifton Hill. It suits days that start at Niagara Falls State Park on the US side, then cross to Canada for the afternoon.
Our chauffeurs check both before leaving the hotel and choose on the day. More on the full trip is on our Buffalo to Niagara Falls Canada route page.

Children and documents on daily crossings
Families with children have a few extra items to carry each day.
- Each child's own document. US and Canadian citizen children under 16 may use a birth certificate to enter the US by land; CBSA asks that a minor's identification be carried into Canada too.
- A consent letter if a parent is absent. Global Affairs Canada recommends one for any child under 19 who is not travelling with both parents, signed by the absent parent and ideally notarised, per travel.gc.ca.
- Custody papers where they apply.
- Car seats. Ontario requires the right child seat or booster for the child's size; the requirement follows you onto the QEW. Child, toddler and booster seats are booker options.
Our crossing with children page goes through each case. International visitors from Visa Waiver countries need an approved ESTA before reaching a US land border, and CBP charges a land-border I-94 fee of US$30 as of 2026; check your status with CBP before you plan daily crossings.
What a crossing morning from Buffalo looks like
Families who have never crossed a land border by car usually imagine something more complicated than it is. On a normal morning the sequence runs like this.
The chauffeur meets you in the hotel lobby at the agreed time and checks, kindly but firmly, that every passport and birth certificate is in a hand and not in a suitcase. You drive across town to the Peace Bridge, where the one-way toll is collected on the trip into Canada, and join the Canada-bound queue. At the CBSA booth the officer may ask where you are going, how long you will stay and if you are carrying anything to declare; each adult answers for themselves, and the chauffeur answers for the vehicle. Then it is the QEW north along the river to Niagara Falls.
Coming home, the order reverses: a CBP officer at the US end, the same questions about purchases, and the drive back into Buffalo. Our page on duty-free and declarations lists what each country allows you to bring back, so nobody is surprised by a question about the maple syrup in the boot.
If you want the car to stay with you all day, from the hotel to the State Park, across to Table Rock and back, book the hourly chauffeur service rather than separate transfers. It keeps child seats installed in one vehicle from breakfast to bedtime.
A three-day Buffalo-base plan that works
- Day 1: Buffalo. Arrive at BUF, check in, spend the afternoon at Canalside. No bridge.
- Day 2: Both falls. Morning at Niagara Falls State Park on the US side, cross the Rainbow Bridge at midday, afternoon at Table Rock and a boat tour, dinner in Canada, back to Buffalo by the Peace Bridge.
- Day 3: Niagara-on-the-Lake or a quiet day. Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 58 km from downtown Buffalo, under an hour before the border; or stay in the city and rest before the flight.
Our journal post on a Buffalo day trip from Niagara Falls, Ontario is the mirror image of this plan, for families staying on the Canadian side.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time to the Canadian Falls | Cost note | Luggage and seats | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur | About 30–40 min plus border | Fixed fare via booker | Child seats in booker; bags in the boot | Families crossing several days in a row |
| Rideshare | About 30–40 min plus border, if the driver crosses | App pricing, surge at night | No child seats | Adults who confirmed the crossing |
| Taxi | Similar, if the cab crosses | Metered | Ask first | One-way trips |
| Bus or train | Longer; fixed departures | Published fares | Your own hands | Travellers with time and little luggage |
| Driving yourself | About 30–40 min plus border | Fuel, bridge tolls, parking at the Falls | Your own seats | Families who drove in and are comfortable at border booths |
Our honest verdict: if you arrived by car and are relaxed about border booths, driving yourself from Buffalo is perfectly reasonable. Rideshare is the weak link, because a driver who will take you into Canada may not be available to bring you back late at night. A pre-booked chauffeur wins when you are travelling with young children, when you want wine at dinner in Canada, or when you would rather nobody in the family had to drive after a long day. Our guide to chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare goes deeper.

Who a Buffalo base suits
Families flying into BUF with a mix of US and Canadian plans are the classic case, especially if a Sabres or Bills game is part of the trip. Couples who like a city break with an art museum and good restaurants can treat the Falls as a day out. Groups arriving for a game or event can stay together in Buffalo and cross once for a Canadian-side evening. Individuals on business in Buffalo often fit in a half-day at the Falls. See our families page for travelling with children.
Frequently asked questions
How far are Buffalo hotels from Niagara Falls, Canada?
Downtown Buffalo hotels on Delaware Avenue are about 34 km (21 mi) by road from the Fallsview hotels in Niagara Falls, Ontario, usually 30–40 minutes of driving off-peak. The border inspection at the Peace or Rainbow Bridge is extra and varies, so allow a margin.
Which bridge should I use from downtown Buffalo?
The Peace Bridge to Fort Erie, then the QEW north, is the usual choice from downtown. The Rainbow Bridge via I-190 suits days that start on the US side at Niagara Falls State Park. Your chauffeur checks wait times on both before leaving.
Is the Peace Bridge toll paid both ways?
No. Tolls are collected only entering Canada. As of 2026 a car pays US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card, or US$4.00 with E-ZPass, and the bridge is cashless. No toll is charged entering the United States.
Do children need passports to cross daily from Buffalo?
US and Canadian citizen children under 16 may enter the US by land with a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. CBSA asks that a minor's identification be carried into Canada. If both parents are not travelling, carry a signed consent letter from the absent parent.
Do Buffalo hotels cost less than Niagara Falls, Ontario hotels?
It depends entirely on your dates. On busy weekends Buffalo often has more availability, but rates move daily on both sides. Compare the same nights, then add the daily transfers. The booker shows the fixed fare for each transfer before you pay.
Can we get from Buffalo airport straight to a Buffalo hotel and then to Canada later?
Yes. Book a BUF pickup to your hotel with meet and greet if you like, then separate transfers for the Canadian-side days, or "By the hour" for a full both-sides tour. Flight tracking is included on airport pickups.
