Start with the calendar rather than the clock. On any given day, the Peace Bridge between Fort Erie, Ontario and Buffalo, New York is shaped by three things at once: the working week of two neighbouring cities, the freight that moves between Canada and the United States, and the holidays and events of two countries whose long weekends do not line up. Understanding those layers is more useful than any single average, which is fortunate, because no official source publishes average waits in minutes.
When is the Peace Bridge wait time usually shortest?
Canada's border agency says early mornings are the best time to avoid waits and holiday long weekends are the busiest. The Peace Bridge is about 32 km (20 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, roughly 27 minutes via the QEW. NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeurs check live Peace Bridge and agency feeds before choosing a crossing; the booker quotes a fixed fare.
That advice comes from the Canada Border Services Agency's 2026 travel tips, published ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which also noted that game days would bring more border traffic. Everything else in this post is about applying it to a particular day.
What makes the Peace Bridge different
- Two cities, not two tourist districts. The bridge lands in downtown Fort Erie on one side and close to downtown Buffalo on the other. Our route planner puts the US end about 4 km (2 mi) from Niagara Square, roughly 5 minutes. A lot of its traffic is local: people crossing to shop, see family, work or go to a game.
- Trucks share the crossing. The Peace Bridge has truck lanes in both directions and runs a Truck Loads/Special Loads program. Trucks have their own inspection lanes, but they use the same bridge and approaches.
- NEXUS hours differ by direction. The bridge authority's NEXUS page says Canada-bound NEXUS lanes run 24 hours all year, while US-bound NEXUS lanes have limited hours, listed as 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday. The Sunday row on its page is hard to read, so check before relying on it.
- Cashless tolls, Canada-bound only. Tolls are collected only entering Canada, by card or E-ZPass, according to the Peace Bridge E-ZPass page. As of 2026, a car pays US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card, or US$4.00 with E-ZPass.
The Peace Bridge Authority's website is the primary source for all of this, and its home page shows live conditions.
Reading the Peace Bridge home page
The bridge's home page shows a status for each direction and lane type, plus a detail many people overlook: how many lanes are open out of the total. On the afternoon we checked, it listed cars at 5 of 12 lanes open in one direction and 4 of 12 in the other, with trucks and NEXUS shown separately, and every lane reading "No Delay".
That lane count is a useful signal. A short posted wait with few lanes open can lengthen quickly if traffic picks up; a long wait with every lane open is more likely to be near its peak. The page also links traffic cameras and a mobile version. Cross-check it with CBSA's wait times page for traffic into Canada, where the crossing appears as "Fort Erie (Peace Bridge)", and CBP's Border Wait Times site for traffic into the United States. Our journal post on border wait time tools compares them.
Getting to the bridge from the Canadian side
From Niagara Falls, the approach is the QEW south towards Fort Erie, a fast, plain stretch of highway through farmland that takes most of the 27 minutes. The queue, when there is one, starts on the approach to the plaza in Fort Erie. Coming back from Buffalo, the queue builds on the American side before the bridge. In both directions, the figures you read online describe the line to the booth, not the drive to the line.

Weekday patterns
On weekdays, the Peace Bridge is a working bridge. Two neighbouring cities generate everyday traffic in both directions, and commercial trucks cross throughout the day. What that means in practice:
- Commercial traffic is a separate stream, but not an invisible one. Truck lanes are inspected separately, yet trucks and cars share the bridge deck and the roads leading to it. Our post on truck traffic and the Peace Bridge looks at this in detail.
- Early is still best. CBSA's general advice applies on weekdays too.
- The NEXUS lane is not always there. If you rely on NEXUS for a US-bound weekday crossing, check the published hours first.
Weekend patterns
At weekends, local and visitor traffic takes over. Shopping trips, family visits, sports and concerts in Buffalo, and visitors to the falls who come in from Buffalo Niagara International Airport all add to the queue. Two things are worth remembering:
- Same-day shoppers declare everything. CBSA says personal exemptions do not apply to same-day cross-border shoppers, so goods bought on a day trip are declared and may be taxed on return to Canada. Declarations take time at the booth for everyone in the line.
- Big events shift the peak. When a major game or concert ends in Buffalo, Canada-bound traffic arrives in a wave. Check the event calendar for your day.

Seasonal and holiday patterns
The calendar is where the Peace Bridge is most predictable. CBSA says holiday long weekends are the busiest periods, and Canada and the United States do not share most of theirs:
- Victoria Day (Canada, the Monday before May 25) and Memorial Day (US, the last Monday in May) fall on different weekends.
- Canada Day (July 1) and Independence Day (July 4) bring heavy traffic in both directions within a few days of each other.
- The Civic Holiday in Ontario, on the first Monday in August, has no US equivalent.
- Labour Day / Labor Day, on the first Monday in September, is shared, which makes it one of the heaviest return weekends.
- Thanksgiving comes twice: Canadian Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October, and US Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, followed by a weekend of shopping trips.
Summer as a whole is busier than winter, but winter has its own problem: lake-effect snow around Buffalo can slow the approaches even when the booths are quiet, and CBSA's figures do not include road delays. Our post on crossing on holiday weekends goes date by date.
When the Peace Bridge is the right crossing anyway
Even when its queue is not the shortest, the Peace Bridge is often the best crossing for where you are going. From the Fallsview hotels:
- To downtown Buffalo: about 36 km (22 mi) via the Peace Bridge, roughly 32 minutes, compared with about 36 km via the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 36 minutes, before any queue.
- To Buffalo Niagara International Airport: about 54 km (33 mi) via the Peace Bridge, roughly 50 minutes, compared with about 43 km via the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 45 minutes, before any queue.
- To Fort Erie and the south end of the Niagara Parkway: the Peace Bridge is the natural crossing. Our post on Fort Erie to Niagara Falls along the Parkway covers that stretch.
So for downtown Buffalo, the Peace Bridge usually wins unless its queue is clearly longer. For the airport, it depends on the day's queues, which is exactly the decision a chauffeur makes before leaving.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare | About 30–50 min plus the queue; cross-border acceptance varies | Surge pricing | Standard car boot | Confirm before relying on it |
| Taxi | About 30–50 min plus the queue | Metered | Standard car boot | Drivers willing to cross |
| Intercity bus | Timetabled, queue included | Ticket price | Coach allowance | Budget travellers on set schedules |
| Driving yourself | About 30–50 min plus the queue | Toll entering Canada (US$8 card, US$4 E-ZPass, as of 2026) | Full boot | Drivers with E-ZPass and documents ready |
| Private chauffeur | About 30–50 min plus the queue, bridge chosen on the day | Fixed fare via booker | Matched to vehicle class | Airport runs, families, groups, business travel |
The verdict. If you are driving your own car and have E-ZPass, the Peace Bridge is simple to use, and a crossing for a downtown Buffalo dinner rarely needs a chauffeur. A pre-booked chauffeur earns its place for airport transfers where a missed flight is the risk, for families and groups with luggage, for travellers who do not want to drive in a foreign country, and on holiday weekends when the right choice of bridge can matter more than the drive itself. Our cross-border car service explains how we handle crossings, and every passenger must carry their own valid documents.
Who it suits
Individuals flying out of Buffalo or heading to a meeting downtown want the bridge decision made by someone watching the feeds. Couples on a Buffalo evening at the Canalside waterfront can book a return trip with a set pickup. Families heading to the airport with luggage and children are the case where a known vehicle and driver matter most. Groups in an SUV or Sprinter clear inspection together, in one vehicle, rather than in several cars that may choose different lanes.

Frequently asked questions
When is the quietest time to cross the Peace Bridge?
CBSA's 2026 advice was that early mornings are the best time to avoid waits and holiday long weekends are the busiest periods. No official source publishes average waits in minutes, so check the Peace Bridge home page and the CBSA or CBP feed on the day.
Where can I see the Peace Bridge wait time?
On the Peace Bridge Authority's home page, which shows conditions and open lanes for cars, trucks and NEXUS, with cameras and a mobile page. CBSA lists it as "Fort Erie (Peace Bridge)" for traffic into Canada, and CBP covers traffic into the US at bwt.cbp.gov.
Are the Peace Bridge NEXUS lanes open 24 hours?
The Canada-bound NEXUS lanes run 24 hours all year, according to the bridge authority. The US-bound NEXUS lanes have limited hours, listed as 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday; check the authority's NEXUS page for Sunday hours.
How much is the Peace Bridge toll?
As of 2026, a car pays US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by debit or credit card, or US$4.00 with E-ZPass. The toll is collected only entering Canada; the bridge is cashless. Pedestrians and cyclists pay no toll.
Is the Peace Bridge or the Rainbow Bridge better for Buffalo airport?
It depends on the queues. By our route planner, Fallsview to the airport is about 43 km via the Rainbow Bridge and about 54 km via the Peace Bridge, a few minutes apart without delays. Whichever bridge has the shorter wait on the day usually wins.
Does the Peace Bridge get busy at Thanksgiving?
Both Thanksgivings matter: Canadian Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October and US Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November, followed by a weekend of shopping trips. CBSA identifies holiday long weekends as the busiest periods, so plan extra time.
What does a chauffeured Peace Bridge crossing cost?
The booker gives a fixed all-in fare for your exact route and chosen vehicle before payment is taken. The fare does not change with the length of the border queue.
