Canada Day and the Fourth of July fall three days apart. Canadian Thanksgiving comes in October, American Thanksgiving in late November. Victoria Day and Memorial Day bracket the last two weeks of May. Each of these weekends sends families across the Niagara River in both directions, for fireworks, shopping, family dinners and the falls themselves, and the bridges feel it.
This guide gives the dates of the next holiday weekends on both sides, what the border agencies themselves advise, how to choose between the four crossings, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans a holiday-weekend pickup so that a slow queue does not cost you a flight or a dinner.
When are border wait times worst on holiday weekends?
Canada Border Services Agency says the Monday of holiday long weekends tends to be the busiest and that early mornings are the best time to cross. Fallsview to Buffalo Niagara airport is about 42 km (26 mi), 45 minutes plus the border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans holiday pickups with a buffer; book online at a fixed fare.
CBSA has repeated that advice in every holiday release of 2026, including its Thanksgiving 2026 travel tips: check wait times before you leave, consider an alternative port of entry, and cross early. It applies to traffic entering Canada; the US side publishes its own estimates.
The next holiday weekends on both sides
| Holiday | Country | Next date | What it means at the bridges |
|---|---|---|---|
| US Thanksgiving | United States | Thursday 26 November 2026 | American visitors arrive for the long weekend; Canadians cross for shopping |
| Christmas and New Year | Both | 25 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 | Family travel both ways; Winter Festival of Lights crowds in Niagara Falls, ON |
| Victoria Day | Canada | Monday 24 May 2027 | First big Canadian long weekend of the season |
| Memorial Day | United States | Monday 31 May 2027 | American long weekend a week later |
| Canada Day | Canada | Thursday 1 July 2027 | Fireworks crowds on the Canadian side |
| Independence Day | United States | Sunday 4 July 2027, observed Monday 5 July | US holiday weekend straight after Canada Day |
| Civic Holiday | Ontario (most municipalities) | Monday 2 August 2027 | Ontario long weekend in peak season |
| Labour Day | Both | Monday 6 September 2027 | Both countries on holiday the same Monday |
| Canadian Thanksgiving | Canada | Monday 11 October 2027 | Canadian long weekend; autumn colours on the Parkway |
In 2027, Canada Day on a Thursday and the Fourth of July on a Sunday put two national holidays inside four days. Plan that week as one long peak. Labour Day is the other date to circle: both countries are off on the same Monday, so traffic heads home in both directions at once.
What the border agencies say
These are the official points worth knowing, all checked in October 2026:
- The Monday is the worst day. CBSA's 2026 releases say the Monday of holiday long weekends tends to be the busiest, and that early mornings are the best time to cross.
- Targets, not promises. CBSA's 2026–27 service standard aims for highway travellers to reach the primary booth within 20 minutes on weekends and holidays from September to June, and within 20 minutes every day in July and August, 95% of the time. It does not include queues on the roads leading to the bridge, and it is not a guarantee for any particular car.
- Check more than one route. CBSA suggests that drivers using Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze compare the fastest and shortest routes, because they can lead to different ports of entry.
- US estimates lag. US Customs and Border Protection's wait-time app refreshes every five minutes, but its FAQ notes the time shown may be up to 60 minutes old. Our border wait times page links the CBSA, CBP and bridge-operator feeds.
- Leftovers stay home. CBSA's Thanksgiving advice is specific: homemade food or leftovers containing poultry cannot be brought into Canada. Turkey sandwiches for the drive should be eaten on the American side.
Choosing the bridge on a busy day
Each crossing has its own character, and on a holiday weekend the chauffeur may change the plan on the morning of the trip.
- Rainbow Bridge. The most direct link between the two downtowns, reached from the QEW at exit 420 in Canada and I-190 in New York, with 15 car lanes into Canada and 16 into the US. It is also where holiday sightseers and fireworks crowds gather. Fallsview to Buffalo Niagara International by this route is about 42 km (26 mi), roughly 45 minutes before the booth.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Further north, reached by Highway 405 in Canada and I-190 or Route 104 in New York, with 10 car lanes into Canada and 6 into the US. It also carries commercial trucks. From Fallsview to Lewiston is about 17 km (11 mi). Our Lewiston-Queenston Bridge page explains the approaches.
- Peace Bridge. Between Fort Erie and Buffalo, reached by the QEW. Fallsview to the Buffalo airport via the Peace Bridge is about 53 km (33 mi), roughly 50 minutes before the booth: longer on paper, sometimes quicker in practice. The Peace Bridge guide covers it, and our post on Peace Bridge wait-time patterns explains when it tends to be busy.
- Whirlpool Rapids Bridge. NEXUS members only, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., and only if everyone in the vehicle is a member, which rules it out for most chauffeured cars.
For a decision on the day, our post on which Niagara crossing is fastest right now sets out how the comparison is made.

Canada Day and the Fourth of July
The first week of July is the busiest stretch of the Niagara year for cross-border family travel. In 2026, Niagara Parks' fireworks series ran nightly at 10 p.m. from mid-May to mid-October, with extended displays on 1 July and 4 July; the 2027 schedule had not been published when this was written. Our events calendar lists the next confirmed dates as they are announced.
What this means in practice:
- Cross in the morning, watch in the evening. If you are staying on the Canadian side for Canada Day fireworks, cross early in the day and stay put.
- Expect the Rainbow Bridge area to be crowded at night. The bridge sits at the foot of Clifton Hill, close to the main viewing areas. After the fireworks, both pedestrians and cars converge on it.
- The US holiday follows straight after. American visitors heading home on the Monday after the Fourth meet Canadians returning from their own week. Early departures pay off.
Our post on Canada Day in Niagara Falls covers road closures and drop-off points on the day itself.
The two Thanksgivings
Canadian Thanksgiving, the second Monday in October, brings Ontario families to Niagara for fall colours along the Niagara Parkway and the last weeks of the wine harvest. It is a Canadian long weekend, so CBSA's warning about holiday Mondays applies to anyone heading north into Canada that day.
US Thanksgiving, the fourth Thursday in November, sends American families to the Canadian side for the long weekend, while some Canadians cross the other way to shop. The return on Sunday is the one to plan carefully. Remember the CBSA rule about poultry leftovers if you are heading into Canada, and the US personal exemptions on what you bring back: after 48 hours or more away, an US$800 exemption including one litre of alcohol for travellers aged 21 or over. Our post on US Thanksgiving visitors in Niagara Falls covers the weekend in more detail.
How we plan a holiday-weekend pickup
- Earlier pickups. For a flight out of Buffalo Niagara International on a holiday Monday, the desk sets the pickup with a larger margin than on an ordinary day. Our Buffalo airport transfer page explains the usual timing.
- Live checks before departure. The chauffeur reviews CBSA, CBP and bridge-operator estimates before leaving and chooses the bridge accordingly.
- Documents ready at the curb. A holiday queue is the worst place to search a suitcase for a passport.
- Cancellation dates on the confirmation. Long weekends may carry a different cancellation deadline, printed on your confirmation. Read it when you book.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Book early. Enter the pickup, drop-off, date and time, and your flight number if you are flying. Holiday weekends fill up, especially larger vehicles.
- Pick the vehicle. Families of up to six with luggage usually need a Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV; groups of up to twelve with carry-on bags fit an Executive Sprinter. The fixed fare for every class appears before checkout.
- Add seats and notes. Child seats, bags, meet and greet, and any note about passengers' documents. Pay securely; your confirmation arrives by email.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time on a holiday | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | Driving time plus the queue, with a planned buffer | Fixed fare via booker, set before you pay; the queue doesn't change it | Sedan 2 large, SUV 6 | Families flying home, groups, anyone with a deadline |
| Rideshare app | Fine on one side; the crossing is not dependable | Surge pricing likely on holidays | Varies | Getting to events within one city |
| Taxi | Local trips; long ranks on fireworks nights | Metered, including queue time | Sedan | Short hops near your hotel |
| Driving yourself | Same queue | Fuel, toll, parking at busy lots | Your own trunk | Locals who know the bridges |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | Pedestrian queue at the far end | Pedestrian toll into the US, as of 2026 | Day bag | Fireworks visitors staying near the bridge |
The honest verdict: if you are staying near the Rainbow Bridge and only want to see the other side's fireworks, walking is often the simplest choice, and a taxi on your own side is fine for short hops. App rides become hard to find and expensive on peak nights, and the airport on the US side warns they may not cross. A pre-booked chauffeur makes sense when the holiday trip ends at an airport, involves children and luggage, or simply cannot be late.
Who this suits
Individuals flying out after a long weekend want the earliest sensible pickup and no surge. Couples crossing for a fireworks dinner may walk one way and ride the other. Families travelling to relatives on the other side need seats, space and a plan for the Monday. Groups heading to an event should travel together in one vehicle so that nobody is stranded on the wrong side of the river. Our page for families covers car sizes.

Frequently asked questions
What is the busiest day to cross the Niagara border on a long weekend?
CBSA says the Monday of holiday long weekends tends to be the busiest for travellers entering Canada. Labour Day, when both countries share the holiday, sees traffic heading home in both directions.
What time should I cross on a holiday weekend?
CBSA advises early mornings as the best time to cross. Check live estimates for each bridge before you leave, and remember that the official estimates do not include the queue on approach roads.
Is the Peace Bridge quicker than the Rainbow Bridge on holidays?
Sometimes. It is a longer drive from the Falls to Buffalo, about 53 km (33 mi) versus 42 km (26 mi), but a shorter queue can make up the difference. The chauffeur compares live estimates on the day.
Can I bring Thanksgiving leftovers into Canada?
Not if they contain poultry. CBSA says homemade food or leftovers containing poultry cannot be brought into Canada. Declare any other food, and leave the turkey sandwiches on the American side.
Are there free toll days on the Niagara bridges?
Occasionally. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission announced 24 hours of free tolls around Christmas 2025 at its three bridges, on its news page. Such offers are announced individually, so don't plan around one.
Does a slow border change the fare?
No. The fixed fare shown in the booker before you pay stays the same however long the queue takes. Long weekends may carry a different cancellation deadline, which is printed on your confirmation.
How far ahead should I book for Canada Day or the Fourth of July?
As early as your plans allow. Holiday weekends are peak periods, and larger vehicles such as SUVs and Sprinters are the first to go.
