From the top of Brock's Monument on Queenston Heights, 56 metres up and 235 steps from the ground, you look straight down the Niagara River to Lake Ontario. Close by, spanning the gorge, is a steel arch that most guidebooks barely mention: the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. Lorries cross it all day. So do cars, buses and limousines, and for travellers staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake or heading to Lewiston, Youngstown or the northern suburbs of Buffalo, it is often a better choice than the famous Rainbow Bridge at the falls. This post covers how it works, how to read the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge wait time, and when it is the right call.
When is the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge better than the Rainbow Bridge?
Usually when you are staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake, going to Lewiston or Youngstown, or the Rainbow Bridge queue is long. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is about 13 km (8 mi), 18 minutes, from the Old Town and 12 km from Fallsview. NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeurs compare live waits before choosing it; the booker shows a fixed fare.
It is not always the better bridge. For Niagara Falls, New York, the Rainbow Bridge lands almost in the state park, and from Fallsview it is only a few minutes away. The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge earns its place in specific situations, which we will go through below.
The bridge in plain facts
The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission, which also runs the Rainbow and Whirlpool Rapids bridges, describes the crossing on its which bridge do I take page:
- It is the only Commission bridge that takes commercial trucks. It also takes cars, RVs, buses, limousines and vehicles towing trailers. Pedestrians are not allowed, and bicycles ride in the roadway.
- Into the United States: 6 car lanes and 4 truck lanes, with a NEXUS lane Monday to Friday, 6:00 to 8:00 a.m., except holidays.
- Into Canada: 10 car lanes and 5 truck lanes, with a NEXUS lane daily, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- Approach roads: from Canada, the QEW or Highway 405; from the United States, I-190 or Route 104.
- Hours: CBP's wait-time data lists the bridge as open 24 hours a day.
- Toll: collected only entering Canada, at a booth on the Canadian side. As of 2026, a car pays US$6.00 or CA$8.50; limousines and RVs are charged per axle.
Our Lewiston-Queenston Bridge page adds the plaza details and drop-off points.
Why visitors forget it
Partly, it is out of sight. The bridge lands on the Canadian side by Queenston, a small village between the falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake, and on the American side by the village of Lewiston, so it does not appear in the classic falls photographs. Partly, it is the trucks. People assume a freight crossing will be slow. Trucks do use it heavily, but they have their own lanes and inspection booths in both directions, and the car lanes outnumber the truck lanes on each side.
The result is that on a busy summer afternoon, when the Rainbow Bridge queue reaches back into the tourist district, the car lanes at Lewiston-Queenston can be moving well. Sometimes the opposite is true. That is why the feeds matter more than reputation.
Reading the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge wait time
The same three sources cover it as cover the Rainbow Bridge:
- CBSA, for traffic into Canada, lists it as "Queenston Lewiston Bridge (Travellers and Commercial)", with separate commercial and traveller figures. Read the traveller column for a car. The CBSA page notes that its estimates exclude delays on the roads leading to the crossing.
- CBP's Border Wait Times site shows US-bound waits by lane type. Read General unless everyone in the vehicle has NEXUS, and remember the US-bound NEXUS lane here only runs on weekday mornings.
- The Bridge Commission's Traffic Conditions page shows autos, trucks and NEXUS for both directions and links live cameras for the Lewiston/Queenston bridge and the Queenston plaza.
Two things specific to this bridge: a heavy commercial figure does not necessarily mean a slow car lane, and the approach on Highway 405 can back up before the queue that CBSA measures even begins. A look at the plaza camera answers that quickly.
Reserve a chauffeur for the Lewiston crossing
When Queenston beats the Rainbow Bridge
You are staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake
By our route planner, the Old Town and inns such as the Pillar and Post are about 13 km (8 mi) from the bridge, roughly 18–19 minutes. To reach the Rainbow Bridge from the same hotels, you drive about 22 km (14 mi) along the river, roughly 30 minutes, into the busiest part of Niagara Falls. Unless your destination is the American falls, Lewiston-Queenston is the natural crossing. Our page on Niagara-on-the-Lake inns covers pickups at each.
You are going to Lewiston, Youngstown or Old Fort Niagara
The village of Lewiston is about 6 km (4 mi) by road from the bridge, roughly 8 minutes. Further north, at the mouth of the river in Youngstown, Old Fort Niagara has 18th-century fortifications and six original 18th-century buildings. For a couple on a two-country history day, Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake and Old Fort Niagara face each other across the river, and this bridge links them.
The Rainbow Bridge queue is long and you are heading for Buffalo
From the Fallsview hotels, the bridge is about 12 km (7 mi), roughly 14 minutes via Highway 405. Fallsview to Buffalo Niagara International Airport is about 57 km (35 mi) via Lewiston-Queenston, roughly 55 minutes without queues, against about 43 km via the Rainbow Bridge. The longer route wins only when the Rainbow queue is clearly worse, which is a judgement a chauffeur makes with the feeds open. Our journal post on Buffalo airport to Niagara-on-the-Lake via the Lewiston bridge covers the airport run in the other direction.
You are doing the jet boat from either side
Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours lists two departure points: Niagara Falls, Ontario, with check-in at 55 River Frontage Road in Queenston, and Lewiston, New York. Both are close to the bridge. See Whirlpool Jet Boat locations before you book.
A two-country history day, paced by car
Here is one way couples use the bridge, all within a short radius:
- Morning at Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the War of 1812 post run by Parks Canada.
- Queenston Heights for the battlefield and, for anyone who likes stairs, the climb up Brock's Monument.
- Across the bridge to Lewiston for lunch, then north to Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown.
- Back over the same bridge in the late afternoon, with time to change for dinner in the Old Town.
Every passenger carries a passport or other accepted document for both directions, and the day works best with a "By the hour" booking so the car waits at each stop.
Plan a two-country day by the hour
When it does not beat the Rainbow Bridge
- Niagara Falls, New York, and the American falls. The Rainbow Bridge lands next to the state park; the Lewiston route adds a detour.
- Walking. Pedestrians are not allowed on the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. If you want to walk across, it has to be the Rainbow Bridge.
- Downtown Buffalo when the Peace Bridge is quiet. From Fallsview, the Peace Bridge is shorter for central Buffalo.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking | Not possible | Pedestrians not allowed on this bridge | Not applicable | Use the Rainbow Bridge instead |
| Rideshare | About 20 min NOTL to Lewiston plus the queue; cross-border acceptance varies | Surge pricing | Standard car boot | Confirm before relying on it |
| Taxi | Similar, plus the queue | Metered | Standard car boot | Drivers willing to cross |
| Driving yourself | About 18–20 min from NOTL plus the queue | Toll entering Canada US$6 / CA$8.50 (as of 2026) | Full boot | Drivers with documents in order |
| Private chauffeur | About 18–20 min from NOTL plus the queue, bridge chosen on the day | Fixed fare via booker | Matched to vehicle class | Couples, families, wine purchases, airport runs |
The verdict. If you have your own car and your documents, crossing at Lewiston-Queenston from Niagara-on-the-Lake is easy, and for a quick dinner in Lewiston you may not need us. A pre-booked chauffeur is the better choice when you have been tasting wine and should not drive, when you are carrying bottles and want the declaration handled calmly, when there is a flight to catch at Buffalo, or when you want someone else to decide, with the feeds in hand, which of three bridges to use. Our cross-border car service explains how we handle crossings.
A note on wine: if you are taking Niagara wine back to the United States, CBP allows returning residents aged 21 or older one litre of alcohol within the US$800 exemption after 48 hours or more abroad, and state law may set lower limits. Our post on bringing wine back to the US from Niagara-on-the-Lake has the details, and our duty-free and declarations page covers both directions.
Who it suits
Couples staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake get the most from this bridge: a history day on both sides of the river, or dinner in Lewiston, without a detour through Niagara Falls; see our page for couples. Individuals heading to Buffalo for a flight or meeting benefit from a driver who will choose between Lewiston, the Rainbow and the Peace Bridge on the day. Families with children and luggage avoid the tourist-district queue. Groups travel in one SUV or Sprinter and clear the booth together.
