Five questions decide it, in this order:

  1. Who is in the car? If everyone holds NEXUS, the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge and NEXUS lanes are open to you. If anyone does not, they are not.
  2. What time is it? The Whirlpool Rapids Bridge closes from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and several NEXUS lanes keep limited hours.
  3. Where are you going? The nearest bridge to your destination often wins before the queue is considered.
  4. What do the live feeds say, in your direction? Into the US and into Canada are measured by different agencies.
  5. Is the difference bigger than the extra driving? A shorter queue at a further bridge only helps if it saves more than the detour costs.

The rest of this post works through each question with real distances, so the answer for today takes minutes rather than guesswork.

Which Niagara border crossing is fastest right now?

Whichever crossing has the shortest live wait for your direction once the extra driving is counted. From Fallsview, the Rainbow Bridge is about 2 km away, Whirlpool Rapids 4 km (NEXUS only), Lewiston-Queenston 12 km and the Peace Bridge 32 km. NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeurs check CBP, CBSA and bridge feeds before choosing; book online for a fixed fare.

Nobody publishes reliable averages in minutes for these bridges, so the decision has to be made on the day. The good news is that the inputs are all public.

Sources: the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission for the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges, the Peace Bridge Authority for the Peace Bridge, and CBP's wait-time data for hours. Distances are from our route planner. Each bridge has its own page in our border crossing section, and we have a deeper journal post on each: the Rainbow Bridge, the Peace Bridge, Lewiston-Queenston and the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge.

Question 1: who is in the car

CBSA's rule is simple: to use a NEXUS lane or a NEXUS-only crossing, every person in the vehicle, of any age, must be a member carrying their card, and the driver is responsible for checking. In a hired car, that includes the chauffeur.

For most visitors, the honest answer is that NEXUS is not in play, and the comparison is between the general lanes on the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston and Peace bridges. That is no disadvantage. Those three bridges between them have dozens of car lanes.

International visitors should add a step. CBP says travellers under the Visa Waiver Program need an approved ESTA before arriving at a US land border, and that I-94s at land borders are issued electronically, with a US$30 fee from September 30, 2025. CBP encourages applying in advance through the CBP Link app or the I-94 website, on its I-94 page. Arriving with that done saves time at the booth, whichever bridge you choose. Our page for international visitors has the full checklist.

Question 2: what time it is

  • 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.: the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is closed. Your choice is the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston or Peace Bridge.
  • Lewiston-Queenston NEXUS lanes: US-bound only Monday to Friday, 6:00 to 8:00 a.m., except holidays; Canada-bound daily, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Peace Bridge NEXUS lanes: Canada-bound 24 hours; US-bound with limited hours, listed as 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday.
  • Early morning in general: CBSA's 2026 advice is that early mornings are the best time to avoid waits, and that holiday long weekends are the busiest.

Question 3: where you are going

Destination does most of the work. From the Fallsview hotels, by our route planner and without any border queue:

  • The American falls and Niagara Falls State Park: the Rainbow Bridge, by a wide margin; it lands about 1 km from Old Falls Street.
  • Lewiston, Youngstown or Old Fort Niagara: Lewiston-Queenston. From Niagara-on-the-Lake it is about 13 km to the bridge, the nearest crossing by far.
  • Downtown Buffalo: about 36 km (22 mi) via the Peace Bridge, roughly 32 minutes, against about 36 km via the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 36 minutes. A near tie, settled by the queues.
  • Buffalo Niagara International Airport: about 43 km (27 mi) via the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 45 minutes; about 46 km via Whirlpool Rapids, roughly 49 minutes; about 54 km via the Peace Bridge, roughly 50 minutes; about 57 km via Lewiston-Queenston, roughly 55 minutes.

Coming back into Canada, reverse the logic. From downtown Buffalo, the Peace Bridge is about 4 km away; from Niagara Falls, New York, the Rainbow Bridge is about 1 km.

Question 4: what the live feeds say

Use three sources, and read the right direction:

  • Into the United States: CBP's Border Wait Times site and app, by lane type. CBP says the app refreshes every 5 minutes, but the time shown may be up to 60 minutes old.
  • Into Canada: the CBSA border wait times page, which lists the Queenston Lewiston Bridge, the Niagara Falls Rainbow Bridge (travellers only) and Fort Erie (Peace Bridge). CBSA notes its estimates exclude delays on the roads leading to a crossing.
  • Both directions: the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission's Traffic Conditions page, which covers its three bridges and the Peace Bridge, with camera links. Whirlpool data there is updated hourly rather than in real time. The Peace Bridge's own site shows open lanes out of the total.

When two sources disagree, plan on the higher number. Our post comparing CBSA, CBP and bridge wait-time tools goes into each in detail, and there are separate posts for heading home southbound and heading north into Canada.

Question 5: is the saving bigger than the detour?

This is where most people go wrong. A shorter posted wait at a further bridge helps only if it saves more time than the extra driving costs, plus a margin for data that may be an hour old.

Take a Fallsview hotel to Buffalo Niagara airport as the example. The Peace Bridge route is about 5 minutes longer than the Rainbow route without queues, and the Lewiston-Queenston route about 10 minutes longer. So:

  • If the Rainbow queue is only a few minutes longer than the Peace Bridge queue, stay with the Rainbow Bridge.
  • If the Rainbow queue is clearly longer, by well over the 5-minute difference, the Peace Bridge is likely to win.
  • If both the Rainbow and Peace queues are long and Lewiston-Queenston's car lanes are moving, it may be worth the extra 10 minutes of driving.

The same arithmetic works for any trip: driving difference first, then queue difference, then a safety margin.

How drivers switch bridges

Switching works best before you leave, not halfway there. From Fallsview, the Rainbow and Whirlpool Rapids bridges are a few minutes apart, so a late change between them costs little. Lewiston-Queenston is about a quarter of an hour north via Highway 405, and the Peace Bridge about half an hour south on the QEW, in the opposite direction. Once you are committed to one of those, changing your mind is expensive.

That is why our chauffeurs check the feeds before the pickup and again on the way, and why we never promise how long a crossing will take. What we can promise is that the decision is made by someone who reads these numbers every day.

The verdict. If you have your own car, your documents and five minutes to check the feeds, you can make this decision yourself with the questions above, and a short trip to the American falls on foot over the Rainbow Bridge is a fine experience. A pre-booked chauffeur is worth it when there is a flight at Buffalo, when you are a visitor driving in a foreign country, when you have children, luggage or a group, or when the day is a holiday weekend and the choice of bridge really matters. Our cross-border car service and Buffalo Niagara airport transfers explain how we handle it. Each traveller, children included, carries their own valid documents.

Let a chauffeur choose the bridge

Who it suits

Individuals with flights or meetings benefit from a driver making the bridge decision; see our page for individual travellers. Couples on a day trip can walk across one way and ride back the other. Families need a crossing that handles car seats and every child's documents calmly. Groups clear inspection together in one SUV or Sprinter rather than several cars in different queues.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fastest border crossing at Niagara Falls?

It changes through the day. Check live waits for your direction on CBP's Border Wait Times (into the US), CBSA's page (into Canada) and the Bridge Commission's Traffic Conditions page, then add the driving difference to each bridge. For the American falls, the Rainbow Bridge is usually best; for Lewiston, Lewiston-Queenston; for downtown Buffalo, often the Peace Bridge.

What is the border wait time at Niagara Falls right now?

Live figures are published by CBP at bwt.cbp.gov for US-bound traffic, by CBSA for Canada-bound traffic, and by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission for both directions. CBP warns its figure may be up to 60 minutes old, so treat any number as a recent estimate.

Which Niagara bridge is best for Buffalo airport?

Usually the Rainbow Bridge, which is the shortest route from Fallsview at about 43 km. The Peace Bridge is about 5 minutes longer and Lewiston-Queenston about 10 minutes longer without queues, so either can win when the Rainbow queue is clearly worse.

Can everyone use the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge?

No. It is reserved for vehicles in which every occupant, including the driver, is a NEXUS member; Global Entry is accepted only for US-bound traffic. It is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and takes cars only.

Is it faster to walk across the Rainbow Bridge?

Sometimes, for a short visit to the American falls with light bags, since you join the pedestrian line rather than the car queue. Pedestrians pay US$1.00 or CA$1.25 on the Canadian side to walk into the US (as of 2026). Pedestrians are not allowed on the Lewiston-Queenston or Whirlpool Rapids bridges.

When is the Niagara border busiest?

CBSA identifies holiday long weekends as the busiest periods and early mornings as the best time to avoid waits. Major events on either side of the border also add traffic.

Does the fare change if the chauffeur uses a different bridge?

No. The fare is fixed and all-in, shown by the booker for your pickup, drop-off and vehicle before payment, and it does not change with the bridge or the length of the queue.
