Chinese Visitors to Niagara Falls: Planning With a Private Driver

Many visitors from China see Niagara on a coach tour with forty strangers. A private driver changes the day completely. Here is how to plan one: language, group size, icewine and the visa steps for both sides of the river.

The usual picture of a Niagara Falls tour for Chinese visitors is a full coach leaving Toronto at seven in the morning, a fixed lunch, forty minutes at the railing and an icewine shop at the end. It works, and it is how many people first see the Falls. But families travelling with parents, business delegations with a free day and friends who want time at the places they choose increasingly ask for a private vehicle instead. NiagaraFallsLimo.net provides that: one car or van, one chauffeur, your own timetable.

Can Chinese visitors book a private driver for Niagara Falls?

Yes. NiagaraFallsLimo.net offers private chauffeured days from Toronto, about 130 km (80 mi) and usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 to Niagara Falls, Ontario, in sedans, SUVs and Sprinters for up to 12. Book online in three steps; the booker shows a fixed fare for your route and vehicle before you pay.

The details that matter most to Chinese travellers are language, group size, icewine and visas. We take them one at a time.

Language: what we can and cannot promise

Many guests ask whether the chauffeur speaks Mandarin or Cantonese. The honest answer is that we cannot guarantee a Chinese-speaking chauffeur on any given date. You are welcome to note the request when you book, and the reservations desk will tell you what it can confirm, but plan the day on the assumption that the driver speaks English.

In practice that rarely causes problems, because the chauffeur's job is to drive the route you booked and wait where you need. A few habits make it easier:

  • Keep the addresses in English. Save your hotel, the wineries and any restaurant in English on your phone. The booking confirmation arrives by email with the pickup details written out.
  • Use a translation app for small things. "Please wait here thirty minutes" or "we need a washroom" are easy to show on a screen.
  • Let a relative book. If you have family in Toronto, they can make the reservation and add their own phone details as a contact.

Our journal post for travellers with limited English has more ideas, including how the booking form works step by step.

Group sizes and the right vehicle

Chinese travel parties tend to come in a few sizes: a couple, a family of five or six with grandparents, or a group of eight to twelve friends or colleagues. Each fits a class in our fleet.

  • Two people: Mercedes-Benz E- or S-Class, for two passengers and two bags. A Mercedes-Maybach or Rolls-Royce is available for special occasions, with availability confirmed at booking.
  • Up to six: a Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV, each for six people and six bags. This is the choice for airport arrivals with luggage.
  • Up to twelve: the Executive Sprinter, which seats twelve but takes carry-on bags only. Ideal for a day trip from a Toronto hotel.
  • Up to sixteen: the Stretch SUV Limousine for a celebration, with minimal luggage space.
  • Larger: coaches on request.

Our group transportation page covers delegations and corporate visits, and the post on Vietnamese and Thai visitors' group day trips shows how other Asian travel parties split a group across vehicles.

Icewine: the stop almost everyone asks for

Icewine is one of Niagara's best-known products in China, and for good reason: it is made under strict rules that are hard to imitate. VQA Ontario's wine categories and labelling rules define Icewine as wine made from grapes naturally frozen on the vine and picked below -8 °C, with juice reaching at least 35 Brix. Wine Country Ontario's icewine page adds that it takes about 3 kg of Vidal grapes, or about 3.5 kg of Riesling, to make a single 375 mL bottle. That is why the bottles are small and why buying at the winery, where the label and appellation are clear, is reassuring.

How a private day makes the icewine stop better:

  • Choose the winery yourself. Niagara-on-the-Lake has many estates within a short drive of each other, about 24 km (15 mi) and 30 minutes from the Falls. Our icewine guide lists where tastings are offered.
  • Taste without pressure. On a coach, the shop stop has a fixed length. With a chauffeur, you leave when you are ready.
  • Nobody drinks and drives. The chauffeur never drinks, and there is no drinking inside our vehicles; Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law does not allow it. Taste at the winery, then carry sealed bottles.
  • Pack for the flight home. Ask the winery to wrap bottles well and put them in checked luggage. Check China's customs allowance for wine before you buy in quantity. A sealed bottle can also be added in our booker as a gift to take away.

Visas: Canada, and the extra US step called EVUS

Citizens of the People's Republic of China need a Canadian visitor visa to enter Canada, by air or by land, according to the Government of Canada's entry requirements by country.

Seeing the American side adds two more requirements. You need a valid US visitor visa, and if you hold a 10-year B1/B2, B1 or B2 visa on a PRC passport you must also have a current EVUS enrolment. CBP's EVUS questions page says the requirement covers entry by air, land and sea, and that an enrolment generally lasts two years or until the visa or passport expires, whichever comes first. Without it, you may not be admitted at a land port. Our documents for entering the USA page explains the rest of the US arrival process.

At the bridge, every passenger shows their own passport. We cannot predict how long the inspection will take, so leave flexible time in any plan that includes both countries.

A two-day private itinerary from Toronto

Day one: the Falls. Leave a downtown Toronto hotel around 8 a.m.; the drive is about 130 km (80 mi) on the QEW. Begin at Table Rock for the Horseshoe Falls, then the boat cruise from April to November, lunch, and the Niagara Parks Power Station in the afternoon. Stay overnight in a Fallsview hotel and watch the nightly illumination from the window.

Day two: wine country. A slow morning, then the Niagara Parkway north past the Floral Clock, which Niagara Parks says holds up to 16,000 plants and is replanted twice a year, to Niagara-on-the-Lake. Two or three winery visits, including icewine, then a walk on Queen Street before the drive back to Toronto, about 120 km (75 mi).

Our private Niagara Falls tour can follow this outline or your own, and the Toronto to Niagara Falls route page details timing on the QEW.

One long day, or a night at the Falls?

Coach tours from Toronto almost always run there and back in a day, which means about three hours in the vehicle and very little time after dark. A private booking lets you choose either shape, and the right one depends on who is travelling.

Same-day return suits business visitors with a free day and groups whose luggage is already in a Toronto hotel. Leave early, keep the stops few, and be back for dinner downtown. The "By the hour" mode lets the chauffeur stay with you all day rather than dropping you and returning later.

One night in Niagara suits families with older parents, honeymooners and anyone who wants to see the Falls illuminated. The illumination runs every night of the year, and the view from a Fallsview room after the day-trippers have gone home is one of the calmest moments of the whole trip. On the second morning, the wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake are 30 minutes away, and you can return to Toronto in the afternoon or go straight to Pearson for a flight.

A third option, popular with travellers continuing to New York, is to finish the trip on the US side. That needs the US visa and EVUS described above, and it is worth planning with plenty of spare time for the bridge. Whichever shape you choose, tell us at booking and the chauffeur will plan the timing around it.

Verdict: a single traveller who speaks some English and wants the lowest cost per seat will do fine on a coach tour or the GO train, and we will not pretend otherwise. Once you are three or more, travelling with parents, carrying luggage, or wanting to choose your own winery, a private vehicle is usually the better day: one fare, one vehicle, no fixed shop stops and no waiting for forty other people. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares the options in general.

Who this suits

Individuals, such as a business visitor with one free day after meetings in Toronto, enjoy a sedan and a flexible schedule. Couples on a honeymoon often choose a Mercedes-Benz S-Class and an overnight stay. Families with grandparents need the patience of a private day, with rest stops and child seats. Groups of friends or colleagues up to twelve share a Sprinter, and larger delegations can add vehicles or a coach.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

Frequently asked questions

Do Chinese citizens need a visa for Niagara Falls, Canada?

Yes. Citizens of the People's Republic of China need a Canadian visitor visa to enter Canada by air or by land. Apply on the official Government of Canada website, and allow for the processing time it lists.

What is EVUS and do I need it to see the American side?

EVUS is a US online enrolment for PRC passport holders with 10-year B1/B2, B1 or B2 visas. CBP says it applies at land borders as well as airports, and generally lasts two years. You also need the valid US visa itself.

Can I request a Mandarin-speaking driver?

You can note the request when you book, and the reservations desk will tell you what it can confirm, but we cannot guarantee a Chinese-speaking chauffeur. Keep addresses in English on your phone and use a translation app for small requests.

How many people fit in one vehicle?

Up to 6 in an SUV with six bags, up to 12 in the Executive Sprinter with carry-on bags only, and up to 16 in the Stretch SUV Limousine with minimal luggage. Larger groups can book more vehicles, and coaches are available on request.

Can we drink icewine in the car?

No. There is no drinking in our vehicles, and Niagara Region's by-law does not allow a vehicle-for-hire driver to permit it. Taste icewine at the winery, then carry the sealed bottles home in your luggage.

How long is the drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls?

From downtown Toronto it is about 130 km (80 mi), usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak. Summer Friday afternoons and winter weather add time, so the chauffeur may suggest an earlier start.

Is a private driver better than a group bus tour?

It depends on your group. A coach tour costs less per seat for one traveller. A private vehicle is usually better for families, groups of three or more, travellers with parents, and anyone who wants to choose their own stops and leave when they are ready.
