Drive from Niagara Falls, Ontario to Niagara Falls, New York and the first surprise is that nobody asks you for money. The Rainbow Bridge toll is collected only on the way back, as you head into Canada. The second surprise, for drivers who have crossed elsewhere, is that the booth does not list a card for cars. Arrive with a few US or Canadian banknotes or a transponder, and the toll takes seconds. Arrive with only a credit card and a jar of pennies, and it may not.
This is the reservations desk at NiagaraFallsLimo.net setting out the toll as published by the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission (NFBC) in October 2026, and how it works when you are a passenger rather than the driver.
How much is the Rainbow Bridge toll?
As of 2026 a car pays US$6.00 or CA$8.50 at the Rainbow Bridge, charged only when entering Canada; driving into the US is toll-free. With NiagaraFallsLimo.net the chauffeur pays at the booth and the toll is inside the fixed fare. The bridge is about 2 km (1 mi) from Fallsview; book online.
The car rate took effect on 1 May 2025, the commission's first increase since August 2022, according to its toll announcement. The same rates apply at the commission's other two bridges, the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge and the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge.
One direction only: why the American side is free
Tolls on all four Niagara crossings, the three NFBC bridges and the Peace Bridge, are collected one way, into Canada. Neither authority charges a toll to enter the United States. So a day trip from an Ontario hotel to the American Falls pays once, on the return.
Where the booth sits depends on the bridge. On the Rainbow and Whirlpool Rapids bridges, the toll booths are at the start of the crossing into Canada, that is, at the American end before you drive over. At Lewiston-Queenston the booth is on the Canadian side. Either way you pay the bridge first and meet Canadian officers after.
It also helps to know who is who. The bridge commission collects tolls and maintains the bridges; it is entirely separate from customs and immigration on both sides. The officers in the booths at the Canadian plaza work for the Canada Border Services Agency, and those on the US side for US Customs and Border Protection. Paying the toll does not mean you have been admitted anywhere.
The 2026 toll table
These are the NFBC rates on the commission's toll and vehicle definitions page, as of 2026, all charged one way into Canada.
| Vehicle | Toll (US$) | Toll (CA$) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Car, cash | 6.00 | 8.50 | Effective 1 May 2025 |
| Car, E-ZPass | 6.00 | Not available | Charged in US dollars only |
| Car, ExpressPass or NEXUS/Toll account | 6.00 | 8.50 | Commission accounts |
| Vehicle in tow, per axle | 6.00 | 8.50 | Trailers and towed cars |
| RV or limousine, per axle | 6.00 | 8.50 | Charged by axle count |
| Bus, 2 axles | 16.00 | 23.00 | Coaches and minibuses |
| Bus, 3 axles | 22.00 | 31.50 | Large coaches |
| Pedestrian, walking into the US | 1.00 | 1.25 | Collected on the Canadian side |
| Bicycle | 1.00 | 1.00 | Either currency |
Commercial trucks are listed separately on the commission's page, but they cannot use the Rainbow Bridge at all; they cross at Lewiston-Queenston.
How to pay at the booth
For vehicles, the commission lists four ways to pay: cash, E-ZPass, ExpressPass and a NEXUS/Toll account. It does not list credit or debit cards for vehicles, so do not plan on tapping a card at the Rainbow Bridge in your own car.
Practical tips if you are driving yourself:
- Cash in either currency works. US$6.00 or CA$8.50 for a car, as of 2026.
- No pennies. From 1 August 2026, pennies are not accepted at any NFBC toll point. Canada stopped making pennies years ago, but American visitors sometimes arrive with a pocketful.
- E-ZPass is charged in US dollars. If your transponder is from a US agency, that is the rate you will see on your statement.
- ExpressPass and NEXUS/Toll are the commission's own accounts, set up in advance.
The Peace Bridge, by contrast, is fully cashless: card or E-ZPass only. That difference catches people who use both crossings in one trip. Our Rainbow Bridge guide and Peace Bridge guide cover each plaza.
On foot or by bike
The Rainbow Bridge has a walkway, and plenty of visitors cross on foot from Clifton Hill to the American Falls. Pedestrians pay the toll the other way round from cars: US$1.00 or CA$1.25, as of 2026, collected on the Canadian side as you walk into the United States. The pedestrian booth takes US cash, Canadian cash, mixed cash, or a tap in Canadian dollars by Visa, Mastercard, debit or Apple Pay. Cyclists ride in the roadway with traffic and pay $1.00 in either currency.
Walking back into Canada, there is no pedestrian toll. Our post on walking across the Rainbow Bridge versus being driven compares the two on a hot day, a wet day and with children.
In a chauffeured car, the toll is not your problem
When you book with NiagaraFallsLimo.net, the online booker shows one fixed all-in fare before you pay. On the day, the chauffeur pays at the booth. You do not need cash, a transponder or the right coins, and there is no separate charge added afterwards.
The chauffeur also handles the parts that are not about money: choosing the Rainbow Bridge or an alternative based on the live boards, lining up in the correct lanes, and keeping the window and documents organised at the inspection booth. Each passenger still needs their own valid documents; see our documents for entering Canada page for the return leg.
Watch out for toll scams by text message
The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission warns on its crossing information page that it does not send requests to pay outstanding balances by text message. If a text claims you owe a Rainbow Bridge toll, delete it. Tolls are paid at the booth or through an account you set up yourself.
How the three main crossings compare on tolls
For a car, as of 2026, all charged only into Canada:
- Rainbow Bridge: US$6.00 or CA$8.50; cash, E-ZPass, ExpressPass, NEXUS/Toll.
- Lewiston-Queenston Bridge: the same NFBC rates and methods, with the booth on the Canadian side. See the Lewiston-Queenston guide.
- Peace Bridge: US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card, or US$4.00 with E-ZPass, according to the Peace Bridge E-ZPass page. No cash.
The toll is never the reason to pick one bridge over another; the queue is. Our post on reading Rainbow Bridge wait times before you leave the hotel explains how to check.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
A return trip from a Fallsview hotel to Niagara Falls State Park, New York. Times exclude the border queue.
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | About 10–15 min each way (5.6 km / 3.5 mi) | Fixed fare via booker, toll included | Strollers and bags fit | Families, groups, anyone who wants no cash or coins to think about |
| Rideshare | Uncertain; many drivers will not cross | Surge pricing | Depends on the car | Trips that stay on one side of the river |
| Taxi | Similar if the cab crosses | Metered | Trunk space | One-way local rides |
| Walking | About 25 min from Clifton Hill | Pedestrian toll US$1.00 or CA$1.25 into the US, as of 2026 | What you carry | Fit adults with light bags in good weather |
| Driving yourself | Same as chauffeur plus parking | Car toll US$6.00 or CA$8.50 into Canada, plus US-side parking | Your car | Visitors with their own car and banknotes or E-ZPass |
The honest verdict: for two adults staying near Clifton Hill on a fine afternoon, walking over is the simplest and least expensive way to see the American side, and we would tell you so at the desk. Driving your own car is fine too, as long as you carry banknotes or a transponder. A pre-booked chauffeur earns its fare with young children, mobility needs, rain, an evening return when you do not want to walk the bridge, or a plan that continues to the Niagara Falls State Park, the casino or Buffalo.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Enter the hotel and the American address, or choose a return trip, with date and time.
- Pick the vehicle class. Each one shows its fixed fare, toll included; a sedan for up to three, an SUV for up to six.
- Add passengers and extras and pay. Child seats, bags and meet and greet are options; the confirmation comes by email.
For how a crossing runs on the day, read the cross-border car service page and how to book a limo.
Who it suits
Individuals usually care most about speed and a receipt with no extras. Couples heading over for dinner and a look at the illuminated falls from Prospect Point prefer not to walk the bridge back at night. Families with strollers and car seats skip the walkway and the cash question at once. Groups in an SUV, a stretch limousine or a Sprinter cross as one vehicle, with one booth stop. If you are staying at one of the Fallsview hotels or near Clifton Hill, the bridge plaza is only minutes away, and the border crossing hub has every other detail. Frequently asked questions
Do you pay the Rainbow Bridge toll going into the US?
No. Tolls are collected only on the way into Canada. Driving from Niagara Falls, Ontario into the United States, you pay nothing at the bridge. Pedestrians are the exception: walkers pay a small toll on the Canadian side when walking into the US.
Can I pay the Rainbow Bridge toll with a credit card?
For vehicles, the commission lists cash, E-ZPass, ExpressPass and NEXUS/Toll accounts, not cards. Pedestrians can tap a Visa, Mastercard, debit card or Apple Pay. If you are driving, carry banknotes in either currency or a transponder.
Does the Rainbow Bridge accept US dollars?
Yes. A car pays US$6.00 or CA$8.50 in cash as of 2026, and the booth takes either currency. E-ZPass is charged in US dollars. Since 1 August 2026, pennies are not accepted at any NFBC toll point.
How much is the toll for a limousine or bus?
The commission charges RVs and limousines US$6.00 or CA$8.50 per axle, and buses US$16.00 or CA$23.00 for two axles or US$22.00 or CA$31.50 for three, as of 2026. In a NiagaraFallsLimo.net vehicle the toll is included in the fixed fare.
Is the toll the same at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge?
Yes. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission charges the same rates at the Rainbow, Whirlpool Rapids and Lewiston-Queenston bridges. The Peace Bridge, run by a different authority, charges US$8.00 or CA$11.00 by card or US$4.00 with E-ZPass, and is cashless.
I got a text saying I owe a bridge toll. Is it real?
Almost certainly not. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission says it does not request outstanding balances by text message. Do not click the link; tolls are paid at the booth or through an account you opened yourself.
Is the toll included when I book a chauffeur?
Yes. The booker shows a fixed all-in fare before you pay, and the chauffeur pays at the booth on the day. You do not need cash, coins or a transponder.
