The last morning of a Niagara weekend has a rhythm: breakfast with a view of the Horseshoe Falls, a final walk along the river, bags in the car, and then the question that decides the next hour. What is the Canada to US border wait time, and which bridge should we take? For American visitors heading home, that queue is often the longest single delay of the whole trip back.
The reservations desk at NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans southbound crossings every day, for families driving back to Buffalo, guests flying out of Buffalo Niagara International and travellers continuing to Rochester or Pennsylvania. Here is how we approach it, using the official sources as of October 2026.
How do you check the Canada to US border wait time at Niagara?
Check US Customs and Border Protection's Border Wait Times site or app for the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston and Peace bridges, reading the General lane figure. NiagaraFallsLimo.net chauffeurs check before leaving; the Rainbow Bridge is about 2 km (1 mi) from Fallsview. Book the trip home online at a fixed fare.
CBP's Border Wait Times site estimates the time from joining the queue to reaching the primary inspection booth. The Canadian agency's page does not help here; it covers only traffic coming into Canada.
Pick the bridge by where home is
Three bridges take cars south from Ontario into New York for everyone, and a fourth for NEXUS members only. The best one depends as much on your destination as on the queue.
Rainbow Bridge, for Buffalo airport, Rochester and the Thruway east. From the Fallsview hotels the plaza is about 2 km away. Once across, the Niagara Scenic Parkway and Interstate 190 lead to the airport, about 44 km (28 mi) and roughly 50 minutes from Fallsview without a queue. Rochester is about 140 km (87 mi), close to two hours. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists 16 car inspection lanes into the US here, the most of any Niagara crossing, and no trucks. See our Rainbow Bridge guide.
Peace Bridge, for downtown Buffalo, southern Erie County and Pennsylvania. The Fort Erie plaza is about 31 km (20 mi) from Fallsview, then downtown Buffalo is minutes away: about 37 km (23 mi) in total. For Erie, Pennsylvania (about 186 km, 115 mi) or Cleveland (about 342 km, 212 mi), Interstate 90 begins just south of the bridge. It carries truck traffic too; see the Peace Bridge guide.
Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, for Niagara-on-the-Lake guests and the northern suburbs. From Niagara-on-the-Lake the bridge is about 26 km (16 mi) along the Niagara Parkway, roughly half an hour, and it joins Interstate 190 at Lewiston. It has six car lanes into the US and a NEXUS lane on weekday mornings from 6:00 to 8:00, except holidays. See the Lewiston-Queenston guide.
Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, for NEXUS members only. Every occupant must be a member carrying the card, and it is open 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. A hired car rarely qualifies.
There is no toll heading south on any of them; all four charge only on the way into Canada.
Reading CBP's southbound numbers properly
CBP splits its figures by lane type: General, NEXUS/SENTRI, Ready Lane and FAST, the last for commercial trucks. In a car with mixed passengers, the General figure is the one that applies to you. Ready Lanes have their own document rules, so check CBP's site before assuming that figure applies to your car.
Two cautions from CBP itself. Its FAQ says the app refreshes every five minutes, but the figure shown may be up to an hour old. And the estimate starts when you join the queue, so traffic on the roads before the plaza is extra.
The bridge operators fill the gap: the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission's traffic page and the Peace Bridge site both show US-bound conditions, and the Peace Bridge adds cameras. Our post comparing CBSA, CBP and bridge websites explains each in detail, and our border wait times page links them all.
Timing the trip home
Nobody publishes average southbound waits, and we will not invent them. What we can share is how the desk plans:
- Mornings are generally calmer. The CBSA's own travel advice in 2026 named early mornings as the best time to avoid waits.
- The last day of a long weekend needs the most buffer. When a whole city's visitors head home at once, every bridge feels it. The CBSA describes holiday long weekends as the busiest periods, and Sunday and Monday afternoons of those weekends are when we pad pickup times most.
- Events change everything. A big game in Buffalo or a concert in Niagara Falls fills the queues in both directions.
- Look before you check out. If the Rainbow Bridge is heavy at 10 a.m., a later lunch and an early-afternoon departure may beat queueing.
Our post on holiday weekend crossings goes through Canada Day, the Fourth of July and both Thanksgivings.
Documents for the American booth
Each passenger shows their own document to the CBP officer. CBP's Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page sets the rules for land crossings:
- US citizens: a US passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST).
- Children who are US or Canadian citizens and under 16: a birth certificate (original, photocopy or certified copy) or other proof of citizenship. The age rises to under 19 when travelling with a school, religious or other youth group.
- US lawful permanent residents: the permanent resident card.
- Canadian citizens: a passport, enhanced driver's licence or trusted traveller card.
- Other nationalities: a passport and the right US authorisation; Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA.
Non-citizens, Canadians included, should also expect to be photographed: under a rule in force since 26 December 2025, US officers may take photographs of non-citizens on entry and exit at land ports. It takes a moment at the window, but it is one more reason to have every passenger awake, documents in hand and ready to look up when asked.
Our documents for entering the USA page has the full list, and crossing with children covers consent letters for a child travelling with one parent.
What to declare on the way back
Declare everything you bought in Canada. Returning US residents get an $800 duty-free exemption once every 31 days after at least 48 hours abroad, and that can include one litre of alcohol for travellers aged 21 or older. After a shorter trip, the exemption is $200, with limits of 150 ml of alcohol, 50 cigarettes and 10 cigars, and family members cannot pool it. These figures are from CBP's customs duty information page, as of 2026.
Two things must stay in Canada. Cannabis, including oils with THC or CBD, is illegal to take across the border in either direction, whatever its legal status where you bought it, and CBP reminds travellers that marijuana remains illegal under US federal law. And anything you cannot explain is better left in the hotel bin than argued about at the booth. Wine buyers should read our post on bringing wine back to the US from Niagara-on-the-Lake and our duty-free and declarations page.
Flying home from Buffalo
If the trip home starts at Buffalo Niagara International, the border sits between you and the check-in desk. From Fallsview, allow about 50 minutes of driving via the Rainbow Bridge plus the queue, plus your airline's recommended check-in time. Our post on border timing for a Buffalo flight works through examples, and the Buffalo airport transfer page explains the drop-off.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time (Fallsview to Buffalo airport) | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | About 50 min plus the queue (44 km / 28 mi) | Fixed fare via booker | Up to 6 large bags in an SUV | Families, flights, groups, no car of your own |
| Rideshare | Uncertain; many drivers will not cross | Surge pricing | Depends on the car | Local trips before you leave |
| Taxi | Similar if the cab crosses | Metered | Trunk space | Short trips in Niagara Falls, Ontario |
| Intercity bus | Longer, fixed timetable | Published fare | Hold luggage | Solo travellers to Buffalo with time |
| Driving yourself | Same drive | Fuel, parking | Your car | Visitors who drove up |
The honest verdict: if you drove to Niagara, drive home; check CBP's figures and the bridge pages and pick your crossing. A rideshare is not a dependable way across the border, which Niagara Falls International Airport itself warns about. The chauffeur makes sense when you flew in and are flying out of Buffalo, when there are car seats and suitcases, or when you want someone who crosses daily to choose the bridge. The chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide compares the options generally.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Enter your hotel and your US destination, such as Buffalo Niagara International or a home address, with date, time and flight number.
- Choose the vehicle; each class shows its fixed fare. SUVs take six passengers and six large bags.
- Add passengers, child seats and extras, then pay. Confirmation arrives by email.
The chauffeur picks the bridge on the morning. The cross-border car service page explains the crossing, and our Buffalo to Niagara Falls route page covers the same road in the other direction.
Who it suits
Individuals flying home from Buffalo want the shortest, most predictable run to the terminal. Couples finishing a wine weekend often leave Niagara-on-the-Lake by the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge without ever passing through the Falls. Families with children, strollers and car seats get a vehicle set up before pickup and a driver who handles the queue. Groups crossing in a Sprinter or stretch SUV go through one booth together, which is simpler than three cars at three different times. The border crossing hub covers every crossing and document.
Frequently asked questions
Which bridge has the shortest wait from Canada to the US at Niagara?
It changes through the day. Check CBP's General lane figures for the Rainbow, Lewiston-Queenston and Peace bridges, then look at the bridge operators' pages for approach traffic. The Rainbow Bridge has the most US-bound car lanes, 16, and carries no trucks.
Is there a toll to cross from Canada into the US at Niagara?
No. All four Niagara bridges collect tolls only from traffic entering Canada. Heading south into New York, you pay nothing at the bridge.
What is the best time to cross into the US from Niagara Falls?
The CBSA advised in 2026 that early mornings are generally the best time to avoid waits, and that holiday long weekends are the busiest. On the last day of a long weekend, leave early or late rather than at midday, and check live figures first.
How long does it take to get from Niagara Falls, Ontario to Buffalo airport?
About 44 km (28 mi), roughly 50 minutes via the Rainbow Bridge, plus the border queue. Via the Peace Bridge it is about 55 km (34 mi). Add your airline's recommended check-in time when you choose a pickup time.
What do US citizens need to cross back from Niagara Falls, Canada?
A US passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or a NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST card. Children under 16 who are US citizens may show a birth certificate or other proof of citizenship. Every passenger needs their own document.
How much can I bring back duty-free to the US from Niagara?
After 48 hours or more abroad, US residents have an $800 exemption every 31 days, including one litre of alcohol for those 21 or older. For shorter trips it is $200, with smaller alcohol and tobacco limits, as of 2026. Declare everything.
Can I use the NEXUS lane in a hired car going south?
Only if every occupant, including the chauffeur, is a NEXUS member with their card. Otherwise the car uses the General lanes. At Lewiston-Queenston the US-bound NEXUS lane runs only on weekday mornings from 6:00 to 8:00, except holidays.
