Brazilians have a home advantage when it comes to waterfalls. Many have walked the catwalks at Foz do Iguaçu, felt the roar from the Brazilian viewpoints and looked across at Argentina through the spray. So when a trip to Canada or the United States comes up, the question is natural: Niagara Falls vs Iguazu, is the northern one worth a detour? We think yes, for reasons that have little to do with size. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives visitors to the Falls every day, and the Brazilians we meet usually leave with a clear view of what makes each place special.
Is Niagara Falls worth visiting if you have already seen Iguazu?
Yes, because the experience is different: three falls rather than a wide forest arc, with tunnels, boats and nightly illumination at a city's edge. Niagara Falls, Ontario, is about 122 km (76 mi) from Toronto Pearson, usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45. NiagaraFallsLimo.net's online booker shows a fixed fare before you pay.
Niagara vs Iguazu at a glance
| Feature | Niagara Falls | Iguazu Falls |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Three falls: Horseshoe, American and Bridal Veil | About 275 separate cascades along a front of roughly 2.7 km |
| Setting | The edge of two cities, Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Niagara Falls, New York | Subtropical forest inside national parks |
| Countries | Canada and the United States | Brazil and Argentina |
| Protection | Niagara Reservation (NY) and Niagara Parks (ON), both from 1885 | UNESCO World Heritage parks on both sides |
| After dark | Illuminated every night of the year | Follow the parks' own opening hours |
The Niagara figures come from the State Park's amazing Niagara facts, which put the total flow at about 3,160 tons of water every second; its figures also show the Horseshoe Falls carrying roughly nine times the water of the American and Bridal Veil Falls combined. Iguazu is famous for breadth and for the number of cascades. Niagara is about a concentrated, very heavy flow in one great curve.
Where Niagara feels different
It is urban. Iguazu is reached through forest. At Niagara, hotels, towers and an entertainment street sit above the gorge. Some visitors find this jarring at first. Most come to enjoy the convenience: you can look at the Horseshoe Falls from a hotel window, walk down to the railing after dinner and be back in bed ten minutes later.
You can go behind and below it. Niagara Parks' Journey Behind the Falls takes you down 125 ft into tunnels to portals and an observation deck at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls, and it is open year-round. Our Journey Behind the Falls page explains drop-off at Table Rock.
It is compact. At Iguazu, the trails and viewpoints spread through the forest, and seeing both sides means visiting two separate national parks. At Niagara, the main viewpoints on the Canadian side sit along one riverside promenade between Table Rock and the Rainbow Bridge, and the Falls Incline Railway links the hotels on the hill with the brink. A good first visit needs less walking and less planning than Iguazu, which leaves time for the wine country and the old town of Niagara-on-the-Lake nearby.
The lights. The Falls are illuminated every night of the year, starting between 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. depending on the season. In 2026 fireworks ran nightly at 10 p.m. from mid-May to mid-October.
The history of power. In 1896, alternating current from Niagara reached Buffalo, the first long-distance commercial use of AC, as the State Park's history page records. The Niagara Parks Power Station on the Canadian side, now an attraction with a tunnel to the river's edge, tells that story.
Where Iguazu fans will feel at home
Boats into the mist. Niagara City Cruises on the Canadian side and Maid of the Mist on the US side both travel into the basin of the Horseshoe Falls, ponchos included. If you loved getting soaked on the river at Iguazu, this is the closest equivalent.
Boardwalks at water level. The White Water Walk drops 70 m by elevator to a boardwalk beside the Class 6 Whirlpool Rapids, open April to November. It is downstream of the Falls, but the noise and power will feel familiar. See our White Water Walk page.
Two countries, two views. As at Iguazu, each side has its own perspective. The Canadian side faces both the Horseshoe and American Falls; the US side puts you right at the top of the American Falls and on Goat Island. Our guide to the Canadian side vs the American side helps you choose.
Seasons: Niagara is a northern waterfall
Iguazu is warm and green for much of the year. Niagara changes completely with the seasons, and the month you choose shapes the visit more than anything else.
May to October is the classic window: the boats, the White Water Walk and the Aero Car are running, the evenings are long and the parks are in full flower. July and August are the busiest weeks, so start early.
November to March brings cold, often below freezing, and sometimes dramatic ice around the base of the Falls. The boats and several attractions close for the season, but Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station and the Butterfly Conservatory stay open, and the Winter Festival of Lights runs from 14 November 2026 to 10 January 2027. Brazilians visiting in winter should bring a real winter coat, gloves and boots with grip; a light jacket that works in Foz do Iguaçu will not be enough.
April is changeable and depends on when the river ice clears. Our guide to the best time to visit Niagara Falls goes month by month, and the Korean visitors' post on boats and photo spots compares the three boat rides in detail.
Entry papers for Brazilian travellers
Brazil appears on Canada's list of visa-required countries whose citizens may qualify for an eTA. The conditions are that you are flying to or transiting through a Canadian airport, staying temporarily, and either held a Canadian visitor visa in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid US non-immigrant visa. If you arrive by car, bus, train or boat, you need a Canadian visitor visa.
That matters for Niagara. If you are on an eTA, fly into Toronto Pearson rather than Buffalo; crossing a Niagara bridge from New York is a land entry. And if you enter Canada on an eTA and then cross to the American side, coming back into Canada by car is also a land entry.
Brazil is not in the US Visa Waiver Program, so seeing the American side needs a valid US visa; CBP issues the I-94 electronically at the land border, with a US$30 fee (as of 2026). Our international visitors page sets out both borders, and the Mexican post on eTA, weather and transport explains the same air-only rule with more worked examples.
A two-day plan built for comparison
Day one: the Canadian side. Arrive at Toronto Pearson, meet your chauffeur at the arrivals door, and drive about 122 km to the Falls. In the afternoon, start at Table Rock for the brink of the Horseshoe Falls, then take Journey Behind the Falls. After dinner, walk along the Niagara Parkway and watch the illumination.
Day two: below and beyond. In season, the morning boat into the mist, then the White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aero Car, an antique cable car that has run over the Niagara Whirlpool since 1916. In the afternoon, follow the Niagara Parkway north to Niagara-on-the-Lake, about 24 km (15 mi) away, for a winery and the old town, then return to Toronto or Pearson.
If you hold a US visa, swap the afternoon of day two for Niagara Falls State Park and Goat Island to complete the comparison from both sides. Our private Niagara Falls tour follows either version.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur from Pearson | 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 | Fixed fare via booker | By class, up to 6 bags | Families, couples, tight schedules |
| Rideshare | similar | Surge pricing | Depends on car | Solo travellers |
| Taxi | similar | Metered | Trunk only | Short hops within Niagara |
| Coach tour from Toronto | full day, set stops | Per-seat ticket | Under the coach | Budget day trips |
| GO train or bus | 2 h or more with changes | Public fare | Carry it yourself | Light packers |
Verdict: a single traveller on a day trip from Toronto can take the GO train or a coach and see the main viewpoints without trouble. If you want to spend the day at your own pace, combine the Falls with Niagara-on-the-Lake, or travel as a family or group, a private chauffeur turns a rushed outing into a relaxed one, with the fare fixed in advance. See our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide for the general comparison.
Who this suits
Couples comparing the two great falls on a honeymoon usually stay a night to see the illumination. Families appreciate a Standard SUV for up to six with luggage and child seats ready on arrival. Individuals, including students on exchange in Toronto, often make it a single day with a sedan or the train. Groups of friends share an Executive Sprinter for up to 12 on day trips, carrying carry-on bags only.

Frequently asked questions
Which is bigger, Niagara Falls or Iguazu?
Iguazu is far wider, with about 275 cascades along roughly 2.7 km. Niagara has three falls but a very heavy, concentrated flow; the State Park puts it at about 3,160 tons of water every second. Each is impressive in a different way.
Do Brazilians need a visa for Niagara Falls, Canada?
Brazilians flying into Canada may get an eTA instead of a visa if they held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa. Entering Canada by land, including from Buffalo, requires a Canadian visitor visa.
Can I see the American side without a US visa?
No, you need a valid US visa to enter the United States. From the Canadian side you still see both the Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls, which is why many visitors stay in Canada.
Is there anything like the Iguazu boat rides at Niagara?
Yes. Niagara City Cruises from the Canadian side and Maid of the Mist from the US side both go into the mist of the Horseshoe Falls. Both are seasonal, roughly spring to November, and include a poncho.
How long should I spend at Niagara Falls?
One full day covers the main sights. Two days, with a night to see the illumination and time for Niagara-on-the-Lake, let you compare the experience properly without rushing.
How far is Niagara Falls from Toronto?
About 130 km (80 mi) from downtown Toronto and about 122 km (76 mi) from Toronto Pearson, usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 off-peak. Summer Friday afternoons can add considerable time.
Is Niagara Falls lit at night like a show?
The Falls are illuminated with coloured lights every night of the year. In 2026, fireworks also ran nightly at 10 p.m. from mid-May to mid-October, with Queen Victoria Park the main viewing area.
Is Niagara worth visiting in winter?
Yes, if you dress for real cold. The boats close for the season, but Journey Behind the Falls and the Power Station stay open, ice forms around the Falls, and the Winter Festival of Lights runs nightly from mid-November to early January. A chauffeur avoids waiting outdoors for buses.
