Stand at the railing in Queen Victoria Park and the far bank looks close enough to shout to. That is Niagara Falls, NY, a separate city in a separate country, and most guests staying in Ontario never set foot in it. The ones who do usually say the same thing afterwards: the falls look and sound completely different when you are standing beside the brink instead of facing it.
NiagaraFallsLimo.net takes Canadian-side hotel guests across for exactly this, by the hour or as a simple there-and-back. This guide is the plan we would hand a family on the morning of the trip.
What does Niagara Falls, NY offer a guest staying on the Canadian side?
Niagara Falls, NY offers close-up views from Niagara Falls State Park, the Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds and Goat Island. From Clifton Hill it is about 2 km (1.3 mi) over the Rainbow Bridge, roughly 5 minutes plus the border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net books it as a return or hourly trip, with the fixed fare shown before you pay.
The Canadian side gives you the panorama. The New York side gives you proximity: you can stand a few metres from where the American Falls drops, walk out over the rapids above the Horseshoe Falls, and feel the spray from a wooden deck at the base. It is also quieter, greener and, for families, easier to pace.
Three ways to spend the time
A half day (three to four hours). Cross mid-morning, start at Prospect Point, ride the Maid of the Mist if it is running, then walk the short path to Goat Island for Terrapin Point. Back on the Canadian side for a late lunch.
A full day. Add Cave of the Winds, the Three Sisters Islands and the Aquarium of Niagara, with lunch downtown. Our walking day on Goat Island and the Three Sisters sets out the route in detail.
An evening. The falls are lit every night of the year, and the view from Goat Island after dark is gentle and uncrowded. Pair it with dinner downtown or at the casino resort.

Inside Niagara Falls State Park: the stops worth the crossing
Niagara Falls State Park is billed as America's oldest state park. It was established in 1885 as the Niagara Reservation, with Frederick Law Olmsted shaping its design, and it is open 365 days a year. Everything below sits inside it.
- Prospect Point Observation Tower. The park describes it as the only panoramic view of all three falls: American, Bridal Veil and Horseshoe. The elevator and deck are open without a boat ticket. In October 2026 the far end of the tower and the Crow's Nest were closed for construction, so check before you plan around them.
- Maid of the Mist. The Maid of the Mist boats leave from the base of the tower and run past the American Falls into the Horseshoe basin. The 2026 season runs April 24 to November 8, according to the operator's schedule and pricing page; as of 2026 adult tickets are US$30.25, including the elevator down. The boats are all-electric catamarans.
- Goat Island and Terrapin Point. A ten-minute walk over the footbridge from the mainland, Goat Island separates the American and Horseshoe falls. Terrapin Point sits right above the Horseshoe, and Luna Island lies between the American and Bridal Veil Falls.
- Cave of the Winds. A wooden walkway at the foot of the Bridal Veil Falls, open year-round with timed tickets sold on site only. The park no longer hands out sandals, so pack shoes that can get soaked. Our post on adding Cave of the Winds to a Canadian-side trip covers timing.
- Three Sisters Islands. Wooden walkways lead out over the rapids above the Horseshoe Falls; they usually close for snow in winter.
The park's own Niagara Scenic Trolley loops between these stops; as of 2026 it costs US$5 for adults and US$3 for youth, and the 2026 season ends November 29.
Beyond the park: downtown Niagara Falls NY, the casino and the outlets
Downtown Niagara Falls, NY begins at the park gates. The Niagara USA Official Visitor Center at 10 Rainbow Boulevard is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with maps, restrooms and itinerary help, per Destination Niagara USA's visitor centre page. Old Falls Street runs east from there towards the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino, which is about 600 metres away; you must be 21 to gamble there.
Two other stops reward a short drive:
- Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center, in the former 1863 US Custom House attached to the Amtrak station on Depot Avenue West, about 3 km (2 mi) north of Prospect Point. Check its hours before you go.
- Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA at 1900 Military Road, with more than 100 outlet brands, about 8 km (5 mi) from the visitor centre, or roughly 10 km from Clifton Hill.
Matching the plan to the season
The New York side changes more through the year than visitors expect, so build the day around what is actually open.
- Late May to early September is the full version: the Maid of the Mist runs long hours, the Scenic Trolley is busiest, and the State Park lots charge their peak weekend rates. Arrive before late morning if you want calm photographs at Terrapin Point.
- September and October are our favourite months for families. Crowds thin after Labour Day, the park's trees turn, and the boat is still sailing.
- From late October, Cave of the Winds moves to winter hours with a 4 p.m. last ticket, and the Maid of the Mist stops for the year after November 8 in 2026. The trolley's 2026 season ends November 29 and it does not run from December through March.
- Winter brings ice formations along the American Falls and quiet paths, but the Three Sisters Islands usually close for snow. Dress for wind off the gorge, and keep the visit shorter than you would in summer.
Whatever the month, the chauffeur keeps the car warm or cool at the curb, which matters more in January and July than any brochure admits.
Crossing the Rainbow Bridge without fuss
The Rainbow Bridge lands you at the park's doorstep, which is why we use it for most of these trips. The Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists 16 car inspection lanes into the US. There is no toll to enter the United States; the toll is charged on the way back into Canada, and as of 2026 it is US$6.00 or CA$8.50 for a car.
Everyone in the car needs their own valid document. US and Canadian citizens can show a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card; US and Canadian children under 16 can use a birth certificate. Visitors of other nationalities usually need a passport plus an ESTA or US visa, and an I-94. Our page on documents for entering the USA explains each case, and the Canada Border Services Agency's travel documents page covers the return. Children travelling without both parents should carry a consent letter.
We never promise how long the crossing takes. Mornings tend to be calmer than late afternoons, and holiday weekends are the busiest.
Where a car can stop in Niagara Falls NY
This is the part most visitors underestimate. State Park parking is metered by lot: as of 2026, Lot 1 at Prospect Point charges US$10 a day, rising to US$15 on Friday to Sunday from late May to mid-October, and the Goat Island lots follow similar rules, according to the park's parking page. City ramps downtown run about US$20–30 a day. On a busy Saturday the lots fill and you circle.
With a chauffeur, the question disappears. We set you down at Prospect Point, collect you on Goat Island near Terrapin Point after your walk, and meet you outside the visitor centre or a downtown restaurant when you are ready. On an hourly booking the car simply waits.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage and strollers | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur (NiagaraFallsLimo.net) | Hotel door to Prospect Point, one crossing each way | Fixed fare via the booker | Strollers and car seats in the trunk | Families, groups, evenings |
| Walking the Rainbow Bridge | 20–30 minutes on foot from Clifton Hill plus inspection | Pedestrian toll US$1.00 or CA$1.25 (as of 2026) | Only what you can carry | Fit adults travelling light |
| Rideshare | Hard to arrange across the border | Surge pricing; many drivers will not cross | Small trunk | Hops within New York only |
| Taxi | Metered; cross-border availability varies | Metered | Varies | Short trips once you are in New York |
| Driving yourself | Quick to start | Fuel, toll, US$10–30 parking | Your trunk | Confident drivers with a free day |
The fair verdict: two adults with daypacks can walk across the Rainbow Bridge, and many enjoy it. Once you add a stroller, grandparents, a car seat, an evening return or a second stop such as the outlets, a pre-booked car that waits on both sides is the simpler day. Our comparison of walking the Rainbow Bridge versus being driven goes into the trade-offs, and our cross-border car service page explains how the chauffeur handles the crossing.

Reserve your chauffeur for the US side
Who it suits
Families are the clearest fit, and our families page explains how we handle car seats and stroller space; a door-to-door crossing turns a logistical puzzle into a morning out. Couples often book the evening version for the lit falls from Goat Island. Groups of up to twelve fit one Sprinter and cross together. Individuals with time and a light bag may prefer to walk over and book only the ride back.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth crossing to Niagara Falls, NY if we are staying in Canada?
Yes, for most first-time visitors. The Canadian side has the wide view, while the New York side lets you stand at the brink of the American Falls, walk Goat Island between the falls, and visit Cave of the Winds. A half day covers the highlights and a full day adds the aquarium, downtown and the outlets.
How far is Niagara Falls, NY from Clifton Hill?
About 2 km (1.3 mi) from Clifton Hill to the Niagara USA Official Visitor Center by way of the Rainbow Bridge, around 5 minutes of driving. Add whatever the border inspection takes that day; we never promise a crossing time.
Can we visit Niagara Falls State Park without a passport?
US and Canadian citizens can cross with a passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card instead of a passport, and children under 16 with a birth certificate. Other nationalities generally need a passport. Every passenger must carry their own document, including in a chauffeured car.
Is the Maid of the Mist open in October and November?
In 2026 the season runs from April 24 to November 8, and the boat is closed from November 9 until opening day in 2027. Spring opening depends on ice on Lake Erie, and hours vary by date, so check the operator's schedule before you plan the day.
Where does the chauffeur drop us off?
Usually at Prospect Point for the tower and boat, then on Goat Island near Terrapin Point or Cave of the Winds. We can also stop outside the visitor centre, a downtown restaurant or the Seneca Niagara casino entrance. On an hourly booking the car waits nearby.
How much is a return trip to the New York side?
The booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. Choose a return trip for a simple there-and-back, or "By the hour" if you want the car to wait between stops.
Can we walk one way and ride back?
Yes. Many guests walk over the Rainbow Bridge in the morning and book a pickup from Goat Island or downtown for the evening return, especially once the children are tired.
