Most people who come to Niagara for wine never find out that the vineyards carry on past the river. The Niagara Wine Trail USA, which calls itself simply the Niagara Wine Trail, follows the same escarpment and the same Lake Ontario influence that shape Niagara-on-the-Lake, only on the New York bank and with far fewer tour buses in the parking lots. From a Fallsview or Clifton Hill hotel, the nearest member winery is roughly 18 km away once you have crossed at Lewiston.

NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives this loop as a cross-border wine day: we collect you on the Canadian side, cross the bridge with you, wait at each tasting room and bring you home. This guide covers the geography, the distances between wineries, the border, and the house rules that matter when you are tasting in New York rather than Ontario.

What is the Niagara Wine Trail USA, and how far is it from the Falls?

The Niagara Wine Trail USA is a group of 12 member wineries in western New York, mostly in Niagara County. The closest, in Lewiston, is about 18 km (11 mi) from Clifton Hill, usually 20–25 minutes plus the border. NiagaraFallsLimo.net runs it as a chauffeured day booked "By the hour", with the fixed fare shown before you pay.

The trail describes itself as a route of wineries and attractions across about 60 miles of Niagara, Orleans and Monroe counties, with wine, mead and cider poured all year. It was founded in 2002 with two members and now has twelve. The trail itself does not run buses or arrange transport, so every visitor organizes their own way between stops.

The escarpment, the lake and twelve member wineries

The New York side shares the geology you see across the river. According to the trail's notes on its wine region, Lake Ontario's depth keeps the slopes frost-free well into autumn, the growing season averages around 205 days, and the soils are gravelly limestone and clay loam. Growers plant native, hybrid and vinifera grapes, and the region singles out Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Riesling, with ice wine made in cold years. The trail counts 58 farms and about 1,067 acres under vine.

The federal appellation here is the Niagara Escarpment AVA, set up by a US Treasury rule published in September 2005. It is a narrow band along the ridge from Johnson Creek in the east, through Gasport and Lockport, to the Niagara River at Lewiston.

The trail's member winery list groups naturally into three areas:

  • The ridge near Lewiston: Bella Rose Vineyard & Winery on Ridge Road, Lewiston, the member closest to the border.
  • Cambria, Sanborn, Ransomville and Lockport: Long Cliff Vineyard & Winery and Anthony Manor Winery in Sanborn, A Gust of Sun Winery in Ransomville, Niagara Landing Wine Cellars on Van Dusen Road, Lockport, and Honeymoon Trail Winery on Ridge Road, Cambria.
  • The Lake Ontario shore: Black Willow Winery and Schulze Vineyards & Winery in Burt, Victorianbourg Wine Estate in Wilson, and The Winery at Marjim Manor in Appleton.

Two members sit further out: Vizcarra Vineyards at Becker Farms in Gasport, and Mayer's Lake Ontario Winery in Hilton, which is in Monroe County near Rochester and belongs on a different day.

Plotting a Niagara Wine Trail USA day: distances between tasting rooms

The wineries are spread out, so the order matters more than it does on a compact Niagara-on-the-Lake day. Road distances we measured with a route planner, before any border time:

  • Center Street, Lewiston to Bella Rose: about 5 km (3 mi), under 10 minutes.
  • Bella Rose to Long Cliff in Sanborn: about 13 km (8 mi), around 20 minutes.
  • Long Cliff to A Gust of Sun in Ransomville: about 3 km (2 mi).
  • A Gust of Sun to Niagara Landing in Lockport: about 7 km (4.5 mi), around 12 minutes.
  • Niagara Landing to Honeymoon Trail in Cambria: about 3.5 km (2 mi).
  • Clifton Hill to Niagara Landing, straight out: about 39 km (24 mi), usually 40–45 minutes plus the border.

That middle cluster is the sensible heart of a day. Four tasting rooms, a lunch stop and a return to the Canadian side fit inside six or seven hours without anyone watching the clock. The lakeshore wineries around Burt and Wilson add a scenic run along Lake Ontario but also distance, so we usually suggest them as a separate, slower day or as a swap for one of the Cambria stops.

A practical rule: plan three or four wineries, not six. Tasting rooms on this trail are mostly family run, hours vary by season and some close on weekdays outside summer. Check each winery's own page the week you travel, and expect the trail's calendar events, such as its autumn murder-mystery weekend and its December holiday event, to fill parking lots.

Pairing the American trail with Niagara-on-the-Lake

The most rewarding version of this trip uses both banks. A typical plan:

  1. Morning on the New York side. Cross at the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge around opening time and taste at two or three wineries in Sanborn, Ransomville or Lockport.
  2. Lunch in Lewiston. The village's Center Street restaurants sit five minutes from the bridge. Our guide to Lewiston, New York covers the street.
  3. Afternoon in Ontario. Recross at Lewiston-Queenston, follow Highway 405 and Niagara Stone Road, and finish at one or two Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries before dinner in Old Town.

From Honeymoon Trail in Cambria back to Queen Street, Niagara-on-the-Lake, is about 35 km (22 mi), usually 40–45 minutes plus the border. If you would rather keep the Ontario half the main event, our page on chauffeured Niagara wine tours explains how a full day on the Canadian side is usually built, and the private wine-tour booking walk-through shows what the booker asks for.

Crossing at Lewiston-Queenston: documents, tolls and timing

Most US-side wine days use the Lewiston-Queenston Bridge. It lands you a few minutes from the ridge, it takes cars and limousines, and the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission lists ten car lanes into Canada. Tolls are charged only in the Canada-bound direction; as of 2026 the published car toll is US$6.00 or CA$8.50, with limousines billed per axle, and the booth sits on the Canadian side.

Every passenger carries their own documents. US Customs and Border Protection accepts a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card from US and Canadian citizens at land borders, as set out on its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative page. Visitors from other countries should read our border pages before the day, because Visa Waiver travellers need an approved ESTA and an I-94 at a land crossing.

We never promise a crossing time. Weekday mornings are usually calmer than summer Saturday afternoons, and your chauffeur checks the live wait-time feeds before choosing the bridge.

Tasting-room rules that matter on this side

A few things are different from an Ontario wine day, and they are worth knowing before you set out:

  • Age 21. New York's legal drinking age is 21, not Ontario's 19. Everyone tasting must show valid photo ID with proof of age, and the trail repeats that on its group and limousine page.
  • Reservations for six or more. The trail says groups of six or more must reserve, and each winery sets its own visitor policy. We call ahead for larger parties when you book an SUV or Sprinter.
  • No drinking in the vehicle. Tasting happens inside the winery. Our cars carry no open bottles on either side of the border, and the chauffeur never drinks.
  • Bottles travel sealed. Purchases ride in the trunk, closed.
  • Declare what you buy. Wine carried back into Canada is declared to the Canada Border Services Agency. Allowances depend on where you live and how long you have been away, and Canadian residents returning the same day get no personal exemption. Our page on duty-free limits and declarations has the detail, and our post on bringing wine back to the US from Niagara-on-the-Lake covers the other direction.

The honest verdict: if you are staying in Lewiston and want one tasting at Bella Rose, a local taxi is fine. Once the day crosses the border, covers rural roads where cars are scarce, or includes anyone who wants to taste freely, a pre-booked driver who waits is the calmer choice. Nobody hunts for a ride in a vineyard lot, and nobody who has been tasting drives.

Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps

  1. Add the stops. In the online booker, enter your hotel as the pickup and list the wineries in order, or pick "By the hour" if you want room to linger. Add the date and a start time near the first winery's opening.
  2. Pick the car. A Standard Sedan or Mercedes-Benz E-Class suits two; a Standard SUV or Executive Black SUV carries up to six with room for cases; an Executive Sprinter takes up to twelve. Each class shows its fixed all-in fare.
  3. Finish the details. Add passenger names and any child seats, note bottle-shopping plans so we leave trunk space, pay securely and watch for the email confirmation.

If you prefer a wider loop, an hourly chauffeur booking keeps the car with you all day.

Who this day suits

Couples get the most from it: quiet tasting rooms, owners pouring, and two countries' wine in one afternoon, which is why we point many visitors from our couples page here. Groups of six to twelve fit well in an SUV or Sprinter, provided we reserve ahead at each winery. Families with teenagers can make it work if the adults taste and the young ones enjoy lunch in Lewiston, though the 21 rule means nobody under that age tastes. Individuals with a serious interest in cool-climate wine will find the comparison with Ontario genuinely useful.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Niagara Wine Trail USA the same as Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country?

No. They share the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario's moderating effect, but they are separate regions in separate countries. The New York trail sits in the Niagara Escarpment AVA and has 12 member wineries; Niagara-on-the-Lake is an Ontario VQA area with many more estates closer together. A chauffeured day can include both with one bridge crossing each way.

Which bridge is best for a US wine day?

The Lewiston-Queenston Bridge is usually the most direct, because it lands a few minutes from the ridge wineries and Highway 405 runs straight back towards Niagara-on-the-Lake. Your chauffeur may switch to the Rainbow Bridge if the live feeds show a much shorter queue. We never promise a crossing time.

How many wineries can we visit in one day?

Three or four is comfortable. The member wineries are spread across rural Niagara County, with 3 to 13 km between neighbours in the central cluster. Add lunch and a border crossing each way and a six- to seven-hour day fills quickly. Booking "By the hour" lets you add or drop a stop on the day.

Can we drink wine in the car between wineries?

No. NiagaraFallsLimo.net does not allow drinking in its vehicles on either side of the border, and Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law forbids drivers from permitting it. Taste inside the wineries, then let bottles ride sealed in the trunk. A sealed gift bottle can be added in the booker to take away.

Do we need to book the wineries ahead?

The trail requires reservations for groups of six or more, and each winery sets its own policy. Couples can often walk in, but hours change by season and some tasting rooms close midweek outside summer. Check each winery's page shortly before you go, or tell us your list and we will flag likely closures.

How much does a chauffeured US wine day cost?

The online booker shows the fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, stops and vehicle before you pay. Hourly bookings suit a loose plan; a multi-stop booking suits a fixed list of wineries. There is no meter and no surge.

What documents do we need?

Each person needs their own: US and Canadian citizens can use a passport, passport card, enhanced driver's licence or NEXUS card at the land border. Other nationalities usually need a passport plus ESTA or a US visa, and an I-94. Children under 16 who are US or Canadian citizens can show a birth certificate.
