Every spring the same question lands on the reservations desk, usually in March: "Are the boats running yet?" The honest answer is that nobody can give a date in March, because the boats are waiting on something upstream, at Buffalo. At the outlet of Lake Erie, a chain of floating steel pontoons holds back the lake ice all winter, and the boat season cannot really begin until that ice clears.
Understanding that one fact makes planning Niagara Falls in spring much easier. This post explains the ice boom, what usually opens when, why April and early May are so pleasant for visitors who do not need a boat ride, and how NiagaraFallsLimo.net plans spring trips from Toronto and Buffalo.
When do the boats start at Niagara Falls in spring?
Usually between late April and early May, once Lake Erie ice clears. In 2026 the Maid of the Mist opened April 24 and Niagara City Cruises on May 1. NiagaraFallsLimo.net drives Toronto Pearson to the Falls, about 121 km (75 mi), around 1 h 35 off-peak. Book online; the fixed fare shows before payment.
The dates move every year. Maid of the Mist's own operator says its spring opening depends on ice on Lake Erie. Niagara Parks lists Niagara City Cruises as an April to November attraction, but a heavy ice year pushes the first sailing back. If the boat is the centrepiece of your trip, keep the date flexible or plan for mid-May.
The ice boom: the reason for the wait
Since 1964, the Lake Erie-Niagara River ice boom has been installed each winter near the outlet of Lake Erie, at Buffalo. It reduces the amount of lake ice flowing into the Niagara River, which lowers the risk of ice jams that can damage shoreline property and cut hydroelectric output. The boom is owned and operated by the New York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation, and its use is authorized by the International Joint Commission.
According to the IJC's 2026 ice boom notice, the boom is typically removed by April 1, or when ice in the eastern basin of Lake Erie drops below 650 square kilometres. In 2026, removal began on April 6, delayed by lingering ice in the lower river. The latest opening on record was May 3, 1971, and the earliest start was February 28, 2012.
Once the boom comes out, the remaining lake ice flows down the river and over the Falls. Some springs, visitors arriving in early April see large floes drifting in the lower river below the Falls. It is a short-lived sight and worth a look from the Parkway.
What opens, in roughly the order it opens
The year-round Niagara Parks attractions, including Journey Behind the Falls, the Power Station and the Butterfly Conservatory, never close. Spring adds the seasonal ones:
- The Whirlpool Aero Car and the White Water Walk. Niagara Parks lists both as April to November attractions, so they are usually among the first to return. The Whirlpool Aero Car page gives this season's details, and our Aero Car guide explains the drive north along the Parkway.
- The Maid of the Mist. In 2026 it ran from April 24 to November 8, according to the Maid of the Mist schedule. Boarding is on the US side, so a passport or other accepted document is required for each passenger crossing from Canada. Our Maid of the Mist page covers the crossing.
- Niagara City Cruises. The Canadian boat opened its 2026 season on May 1. Its dock is at 5920 Niagara Parkway, below Clifton Hill, and our Niagara City Cruises page shows where the car drops you.
- Old Fort Erie and the Laura Secord Homestead. Both are May to October attractions.
- The nightly fireworks. In 2026 the 10 pm series began on May 15.
The Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake also starts its season in spring; in 2026 it opened on April 2. Our Shaw Festival page and the post on Shaw theatre nights without driving cover performance-night timing.

Why April and early May feel so calm
Spring is the gap between ski season and summer holidays. Ontario schools are in session apart from March Break and Easter, and the US summer crowd has not arrived. On a weekday in late April, Table Rock and Queen Victoria Park can feel almost private compared with August.
The weather is changeable. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981–2010 climate normals for the Niagara Falls station give April an average daily high of about 12.8 °C and a low of about 2.2 °C, rising to 19.4 °C and 7.7 °C in May. April still averages around 6 cm of snow in total, usually early in the month, and both months bring about 11 to 13 days with some rain. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket; the mist near the Falls is cold before June.
The light is another reason photographers like spring. The Falls are lit from 8:00 pm between April 1 and May 14, which means a spring evening can include a full sunset before the illumination begins.
The two spring weekends that are not quiet
Spring has two exceptions to the calm. March Break, Ontario's school holiday in mid-March, brings families to the indoor attractions, the waterpark hotels and Clifton Hill, even though the boats are still weeks away. Easter is the other: in 2027, Good Friday falls on March 26 and Easter Monday on March 29, and the long weekend fills Fallsview hotels with families from across the region.
Neither weekend has the boat season to lean on, so plan around what is open all year: the tunnels behind the Falls, the Power Station, the Butterfly Conservatory and the indoor attractions on Clifton Hill. If you are travelling then, book transport early, because family-sized SUVs are the first vehicles to go. Our posts on March Break in Niagara Falls and Easter weekend family trips cover those weekends in detail.
Gardens, the Parkway and wine country in bloom
Niagara Parks has been a horticultural leader since 1885, and spring is when that shows. The Floral Clock, about 10 km (6 mi) north of Fallsview and 15 minutes by car, is replanted twice a year. The Botanical Gardens cover 99 acres north of the Falls, with the Butterfly Conservatory inside them. Our Niagara Glen and Botanical Gardens page describes the stops.
Further north, wine country wakes up. Tasting rooms in Niagara-on-the-Lake keep regular hours, the Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake run a May program called Sip & Sizzle, and patios start to open. Old Town Niagara-on-the-Lake is about 23 km (15 mi) from Fallsview, around 30 minutes by the Parkway.
Planning a spring trip around an uncertain boat date
Here is the approach the desk suggests:
- If the boat is essential, book from mid-May onward, or keep a flexible date and buy tickets once the season is announced.
- If the boat is a bonus, an April trip gives you the Falls, the tunnels, the Aero Car and quiet streets, with the boat as an add-on if it is running.
- If you are flying in, Pearson is about 121 km (75 mi) from the Fallsview hotels, around 1 h 35 off-peak, and Buffalo Niagara International is about 43 km (27 mi), around 45 minutes plus the border crossing. Our post on which airport is closest to Niagara Falls compares them.
- If the day turns wet, the year-round attractions are mostly indoors or underground. The post on a wet-weather itinerary has a full plan.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Tell the booker where and when. Pickup at Pearson, Buffalo, a Toronto address or your hotel; drop-off at your Niagara hotel; the date, time and flight number if you are flying.
- Choose your vehicle. A Standard Sedan for up to three, a Mercedes-Benz E or S-Class for two, an SUV for up to six with luggage. The fixed fare for each class appears beside it in the booker.
- Finish the details. Add passengers, bags, child seats, meet and greet, and any notes about a boat time. Pay online; we email the confirmation.
If your plan includes the Maid of the Mist, choose a cross-border trip so the chauffeur crosses the bridge with you. Every passenger carries their own valid documents.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Option | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-booked chauffeur | About 1 h 35 from Pearson; around 45 min from Buffalo plus the border | Fixed fare via booker | Room for bags and car seats | Airport arrivals, cross-border boat days |
| Rideshare | Same roads, if available | App pricing, may surge | Depends on the car | Short hops in Niagara Falls |
| Taxi | Same roads | Metered | Standard trunk | Hotel to attraction in town |
| GO train + WEGO | Train timetable plus a bus | Published fares | Carry-on friendly | Light travellers from downtown Toronto |
| WEGO bus | Hop-on, hop-off loop | Published day pass | Small bags | Moving between Niagara Parks sites |
The honest verdict: spring is a good season to do without a car in town. WEGO links the Niagara Parks sites, and a taxi or rideshare is fine for a one-off trip within Niagara Falls. Where a chauffeur clearly helps is the arrival from Pearson or Buffalo, a day that includes both the Canadian boat and the Maid of the Mist, or an afternoon in wine country. Spring travellers weighing the options can read our comparison of chauffeurs, taxis and rideshare.
Who a spring visit suits
Couples who want the Falls without the summer crowds will find April and May ideal, and individuals with a camera get the floating ice and long sunsets. Families can work around the boat date by planning for the year-round attractions first. Groups book easily in spring, when SUVs and Sprinters are less in demand than in July. If you are still choosing a season, our best time to visit Niagara Falls guide compares them all.
Frequently asked questions
When does the Maid of the Mist open in spring?
Its opening depends on ice on Lake Erie. In 2026 it opened on April 24 and ran until November 8. Check the official schedule before you book, because the date changes each year.
Why does the ice boom affect the Niagara Falls boats?
The ice boom holds Lake Erie ice back from the Niagara River all winter. It is typically removed by April 1 or once ice in eastern Lake Erie falls below 650 square kilometres. The remaining ice then flows downriver, and the boats can begin once it clears.
Is Niagara Falls busy in April?
Usually not, apart from the Easter long weekend. April weekdays are among the quietest times of the year at the brink, though the Whirlpool Aero Car and White Water Walk are usually open by then.
What is the weather like at Niagara Falls in spring?
Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1981–2010 normals give April an average high of about 12.8 °C and May about 19.4 °C, with lows of 2.2 °C and 7.7 °C. Expect rain on around 11 to 13 days a month.
Are the fireworks on in spring?
In 2026 the nightly 10 pm fireworks began on Friday, May 15, and ran to October 12. Before mid-May there are no regular fireworks, but the Falls are lit every night of the year.
Can I do both boat rides in one spring day?
Yes, once both are running. The Maid of the Mist leaves from the US side, so you cross the Rainbow Bridge with your documents. A chauffeur crosses with you and brings you back to the Canadian dock.
Can we have a glass of wine in the car between wineries?
No. Alcohol stays sealed in our vehicles: the Niagara Region by-law for licensed drivers says they may not permit drinking in the car. Bottles you buy travel sealed in the trunk.
