Ask a map and the answer is easy. Ask anyone who has tried to book flights for a family of five from Vancouver, Dallas or London, and it gets more complicated. The closest airport to Niagara Falls by road is Niagara Falls International in New York, but most visitors arrive through one of three others, for good reasons.
Here is the ranking by distance first, then the three questions that change it.
| Airport | Country | Road distance to the Fallsview area | Typical drive, no traffic or border | Border crossing to the Canadian Falls? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Niagara Falls International (IAG) | US | about 14 km (9 mi) | about 20 – 25 min | yes |
| Niagara District Airport (YCM), private and charter only | Canada | about 17 km (11 mi) | about 20 min | no |
| Buffalo Niagara International (BUF) | US | about 42 km (26 mi) | about 45 min | yes |
| John C. Munro Hamilton International (YHM) | Canada | about 90 km (56 mi) | about 1 h 25 | no |
| Toronto Pearson International (YYZ) | Canada | about 122 km (76 mi) | about 1 h 35 | no |
| Billy Bishop Toronto City (YTZ) | Canada | about 127 km (79 mi) | about 1 h 40 | no |
| Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International (ROC) | US | about 138 km (86 mi) | about 1 h 55 | yes |
Distances come from a road routing engine to the Table Rock and Fallsview area and do not include traffic, which can add a great deal around Toronto on a summer Friday, or any queue at a bridge.
Which airport is closest to Niagara Falls?
Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG) in New York is the closest commercial airport to Niagara Falls, about 14 km (9 mi) from the Canadian Falls. Buffalo (BUF) is 42 km, Hamilton (YHM) 90 km and Toronto Pearson (YYZ) 122 km. NiagaraFallsLimo.net picks up at all of them; the online booker shows each fixed fare.
If you are staying in Niagara Falls, New York, the US-side airports are closer still, since there is no bridge to cross. Downtown Niagara Falls, NY, is a few minutes from IAG.
Three questions that matter more than distance
Before choosing an airport by kilometres, run through these.
- Can you actually fly there? A short drive is useless if the airport has no flight from your city, or only two a week.
- Is there a border between the airport and your hotel? For the Canadian Falls, every US airport means one crossing on arrival and another on departure, with documents for every passenger.
- What does the whole journey cost in time? A lower fare to Toronto with an evening arrival into rush hour can lose an hour against a higher fare to Buffalo.
Niagara Falls International (IAG): closest, fewest flights
IAG is a quiet terminal with a long runway and 24-hour operations. In 2026 its Where We Fly page shows one airline, Allegiant Air, flying to Fort Myers/Punta Gorda, Myrtle Beach, Orlando/Sanford and Tampa/St. Petersburg. If you live near one of those airports, it is a superb choice. If not, it is not really an option.
The airport's own ground-transportation page warns that rideshare services are not allowed to cross the border, which matters if you are heading for an Ontario hotel. Our post on IAG arrivals heading to the Canadian side covers that leg.
Buffalo Niagara International (BUF): the usual winner for Americans
Buffalo's airport overview describes up to 100 nonstop flights a day to 31 destinations, with nonstops on carriers including American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest and United. For travellers from most US cities, that makes it the practical first choice: a single flight, or a single connection, and a 45-minute ride. The trade-off is the border. Every passenger needs the right documents for Canada, and the chauffeur picks the Peace Bridge, Rainbow Bridge or Lewiston-Queenston Bridge based on live waits. Our Buffalo Niagara airport transfer page explains the crossing, and the border wait times guide shows where we check before setting off.
Hamilton (YHM): closest Canadian airport with scheduled flights
John C. Munro Hamilton International sits on the escarpment above Hamilton, about 90 km from the Falls along the Lincoln Alexander and Red Hill Valley parkways and the QEW. The airport's airline page lists Porter Airlines and WestJet, with WestJet's year-round Calgary service and seasonal sun flights. It is smaller than Pearson and avoids Toronto traffic entirely. Air Canada also runs a motorcoach link, Landline, between Hamilton and Toronto Pearson, which tells you how connected the two airports are.
The airport notes that shuttle and limousine service is not regularly scheduled and must be pre-arranged with a provider. See our Hamilton airport transfer page and the sibling post calling it the underrated arrival for Niagara.
Toronto Pearson (YYZ): farthest of the four, most flights
Pearson is the main international gateway for southern Ontario, with far more long-haul routes than any other airport in this comparison. That is the reason most overseas visitors land there, even though it is the farthest of the four by road. The route to the Falls follows Highway 403 or 427, then the QEW around the western end of Lake Ontario; it is about 122 km and usually 1 h 30 – 1 h 50 off-peak, with 2 h or more on summer Fridays and holiday weekends.
No border is involved, which simplifies life for international visitors who would otherwise need US entry documents just to reach Canada. Our Toronto Pearson transfer page and the sibling article ranking every option from Pearson to Niagara Falls by door-to-door time go into detail.
Compare fixed fares from each airport
The others: Billy Bishop, Rochester and the Niagara District Airport
Billy Bishop Toronto City (YTZ) is on the Toronto Islands, reached by a short ferry or a pedestrian tunnel. Since March 10, 2026, it has offered US Customs and Border Protection preclearance for US-bound passengers, according to the airport's preclearance page. For arrivals, it is a good choice if you are flying from a city it serves; the drive to the Falls is about 127 km.
Rochester (ROC) is about 138 km away and on the US side, so it brings both a longer drive and a border crossing. The airport describes itself as a small hub with about 120 flights a day to 19 nonstop destinations. It mainly makes sense when a fare or schedule is much better than Buffalo's, or when Rochester is already on your itinerary.
Niagara District Airport (YCM) in Niagara-on-the-Lake handles private and charter aircraft, not scheduled airlines. For a private jet or a charter flight, it is the closest landing to wine country. Our Niagara District Airport page covers ground transport from there.
What the ground leg costs, without the guesswork
We do not publish fares in articles, because every trip is different. What the booker shows is a fixed all-in fare for your exact pickup, drop-off and vehicle before you pay. The fare follows obvious logic: a longer drive costs more than a shorter one, and a cross-border trip includes the crossing. A Pearson transfer is a longer drive than a Buffalo transfer; a Buffalo transfer includes a border. Check both in the booker and compare them with the flight prices before you commit.
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| From | Pre-booked chauffeur | Rideshare | Taxi | Train or bus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IAG | about 20 – 25 min plus the border; fixed fare via booker | not allowed to cross the border | fine for US-side hotels | none useful |
| BUF | about 45 min plus the border; fixed fare via booker | some drivers will not cross; surge pricing | metered; check it will cross | shared shuttles exist; more stops |
| YHM | about 1 h 25; fixed fare via booker | available; surge pricing | at the arrivals curb; metered | HSR bus to Hamilton GO, then transfers |
| YYZ | about 1 h 35 – 2 h; fixed fare via booker | permitted at Pearson; surge pricing | airport taxi stand | UP Express and GO train, or FlixBus from Terminal 1 |
The honest verdict. For one traveller with a backpack arriving at Pearson in daylight, FlixBus from Terminal 1 or the UP Express and GO combination is a reasonable, lower-cost route, and we would say so. For US-side hotels, a taxi from IAG or Buffalo is fine. A pre-booked chauffeur pays off when there is a border to cross, when there are children with car seats, when the flight lands late, or when four or five people and their bags would otherwise need two cars.
Who each airport suits
Individuals usually choose by flight schedule and accept whatever drive follows. Couples often favour Buffalo for its short ground leg, or Hamilton if they live in western Canada. Families with young children tend to do best with the airport that offers a single nonstop flight, even if the drive is longer, because one long car ride is easier than a connection. Groups should price the ground leg in a Sprinter or two SUVs from more than one airport; the difference can be larger than the airfare gap. Our airport transfers hub lists every airport we serve.
