Look at a map of the Niagara Peninsula and the railway runs like a seam along the bottom of the escarpment, from Hamilton through Grimsby and St. Catharines to Niagara Falls. Wine country sits on both sides of it. The vineyards of the Twenty Valley, around Jordan and Vineland, and the Short Hills Bench to the south-west of St. Catharines are much nearer to the St. Catharines platform than to the terminus at Niagara Falls. That simple fact is the reason this small, unstaffed station deserves a page of its own.
Should you get off the train at St. Catharines GO for Niagara wine country?
For Twenty Valley and Short Hills Bench wineries, yes: St. Catharines GO, at 5 Great Western Street, is about 10 km (6 mi) from Jordan Village, roughly 13 minutes. For Niagara-on-the-Lake or the falls, both about 22 km away, either station works. NiagaraFallsLimo.net meets your train here; the booker shows a fixed fare first.
The short version: get off at St. Catharines if your day starts west of the city. Stay on to Niagara Falls if your hotel is at Fallsview or Clifton Hill. For the Old Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, it is roughly a draw, so choose the train time that suits you.
The station, as you will find it
The St. Catharines station sits on Great Western Street, off St. Paul Street West, below the escarpment on the west side of the city centre. From the GO Transit station page:
- Address: 5 Great Western Street, St. Catharines.
- Not staffed. There is no ticket office or attendant on site.
- No free customer parking. Worth knowing if a friend plans to meet you by car.
- No local transit connections listed on the GO page.
- Bike racks are available.
The practical consequence of "unstaffed with no listed transit connection" is that whatever happens after you step off the train is up to you. On a sunny Saturday with a bicycle, that is part of the fun. With a suitcase and a 1 p.m. tasting booked in Vineland, it is a reason to arrange the ride before you leave Toronto.
Which trains stop here
Two services call at St. Catharines:
- GO Transit's Niagara trains on the Lakeshore West line, which run between Union Station and Niagara Falls through Hamilton's Confederation GO. Metrolinx says eight trips serve Niagara Falls on each weekend day. The same rail corridor was interrupted for ten days in spring 2026 after a CN freight derailment near St. Catharines on March 30; trains resumed on April 10. Check the schedule before you go.
- The Maple Leaf, the once-daily VIA Rail and Amtrak train between Toronto and New York City, which also stops at Grimsby and Niagara Falls, Ontario. Visit St. Catharines notes that the station opens 30 minutes before and closes 30 minutes after a train, that tickets must be bought in advance, and that there is no checked baggage. Its how to get to St. Catharines page summarizes the options.
Our journal posts on the weekend GO train to Niagara Falls and the Amtrak Maple Leaf cover both timetables in more depth.

Three days that start on this platform
A Twenty Valley and Benchlands day
The Twenty Valley around Jordan and Vineland, and the Beamsville Bench beyond it, are the main reason to get off at St. Catharines. Wineries here, such as Cave Spring on Main Street in Jordan and Tawse and Vineland Estates in Vineland, sit along the escarpment roads. A "By the hour" booking from the platform lets you start at the first winery within a quarter of an hour of arriving and finish back at the station for an evening train, or carry on to a hotel at the falls. Our Twenty Valley and Beamsville Bench guide and the journal post on a Jordan Village day trip help with the plan.
A Short Hills Bench afternoon close to the city
For a shorter day, the Short Hills Bench sub-appellation lies just south-west of St. Catharines. Henry of Pelham is about 11 minutes from the platform. Our post on Short Hills Bench wineries near St. Catharines lists more stops and how to pace them.
Niagara-on-the-Lake from the west
If you are heading for the Old Town or the wineries on Niagara Stone Road, the drive from St. Catharines is about the same as from Niagara Falls GO. Choose the train that fits your morning and let the car take the last 20-odd kilometres. Our guide to Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries covers the main tasting rooms.
On any of these days, one rule holds: there is no drinking in our vehicles. Niagara Region's vehicle-for-hire by-law forbids drivers from permitting it. You taste at the wineries; the chauffeur drives. Bottles you buy ride sealed in the boot. Our Niagara wine tour limo service describes how a tasting day is usually paced.
Not only wine: canal ships and the lakeshore
Two non-wine stops are close enough to fit around a train. The Welland Canals Centre at Lock 3 is where visitors watch lake freighters rise and fall in the lock. The St. Catharines Museum notes that admission is by donation, ships are usually scheduled no more than 24 hours ahead, a lockage takes about 20 minutes, and the canal closes from early January to mid-March. Port Dalhousie, with its beach and old harbour, is the same distance in the other direction.
Timing your arrival around the tasting rooms
Winery tasting rooms keep their own hours, and many prefer a reservation for larger parties, so the train timetable and the first tasting need to agree. A few habits from the reservations desk:
- Leave a buffer. Book the first tasting at least 30 minutes after the scheduled arrival, so a slow train does not cost you the slot.
- Weekdays need more care. There are fewer direct Niagara trains on weekdays than on weekends, so check that a train actually stops at St. Catharines at the time you want before you build the day around it.
- Plan the end first. Decide if the day ends back on the platform, at a hotel by the falls or at an inn in wine country, and book the car to match.
Check your fixed fare from the platform
Chauffeur vs rideshare vs taxi for this trip
| Mode | Door-to-door time | Cost note | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rideshare | 10–30 min plus the wait for a car | Surge pricing at busy times | Standard car boot | One or two people, single short hop |
| Taxi | 10–30 min plus call-ahead time | Metered | Standard car boot | Station to a single address |
| Staying on the train to Niagara Falls | A short extra ride on the same train, then the last mile | Same GO ticket to the terminus | Carry it yourself | Falls hotels and Clifton Hill |
| Bicycle | Varies | Your own bike on a bike coach | A small bag | Fit riders exploring the escarpment |
| Driving yourself | Not applicable from the train | No free customer parking at the station | Full boot | Someone meeting you by car |
| Private chauffeur | 11–29 min to most stops, waiting at arrival | Fixed fare via booker | Matched to vehicle class | Winery days, groups, luggage, timed tastings |
The verdict. For a single trip from the platform to one address at a quiet hour, a taxi or rideshare is often perfectly fine. If your hotel is at the falls, staying on the train to Niagara Falls GO is simpler than getting off early. A pre-booked chauffeur wins when the day involves several wineries across farm roads, when nobody in the group should drive after tasting, when you have bags or children, or when you need to be back on the platform for the last train. Our chauffeur vs taxi vs rideshare guide explains the general case.
Who it suits
Individuals coming for a single tasting or a visit to Brock may be well served by a taxi, and our page for individual travellers covers the cases where a booked car is better. Couples on a wine day usually book by the hour so the car stays with them. Families with older children visiting Brock often combine a campus visit with the falls in one afternoon. Groups on a winery outing fit up to six in an SUV or up to twelve in an Executive Sprinter, with one fixed fare for the vehicle.
Booking it with NiagaraFallsLimo.net in 3 steps
- Set the pickup. Enter St. Catharines GO, 5 Great Western Street, with your train time or the Maple Leaf train number, plus your first winery, hotel or address.
- Select the vehicle and mode. Point to point, return, multi-stop or "By the hour"; each vehicle class shows a fixed fare.
- Confirm and pay. Add passengers, bags, child seats and extras, pay securely and receive your confirmation by email.
We track train arrivals as we track flights, so a late train simply moves the pickup. Our train station transfers page explains the details, and our earlier post on St. Catharines to Niagara Falls rides covers trips that begin elsewhere in the city. When you are ready, reserve the pickup online.
